November 30, 2017 - TxDOT’s ‘Plan While You Can’ campaign aims to reduce crashes, save lives during holiday season
During last year’s holiday season,* approximately one in four deaths on Texas roadways were alcohol-related. In an effort to reduce these fatalities, the Texas Department of Transportation’s “Plan While You Can” campaign reminds drivers to make planning a sober ride part of their holiday celebrations.
November 21, 2017 Lufkin – Repair work is being planned in Nacogdoches County beginning next week and will continue through coming weeks.
Work is scheduled to begin on BU 59, at the intersection of US 59 and US 259 to allow for the repair of the concrete bridge rail on the northbound overpass that crosses US 59.
The inside lane of BU 59N will be closed to through traffic to US 259N. Motorists needing to access US 259 North will still be able to access the clover leaf onto US 259N. The work should be completed in about three weeks, weather permitting.
November 7, 2017 - Approaching deer season accompanied by cooler weather causes more deer to be on the move. TxDOT wants to remind drivers of the dangers of deer on the roadways and how quickly they can run in front of a moving vehicle.
November 1, 2017 - Crews have begun this week to place profile rumble strips in Nacogdoches County, and will move through the district to place them in 46 other locations.
Total Highway Maintenance, Cedar Hill, will serve as contractor for the $2.9 million project that will enhance the safety of the roadways. The project began in October and, weather permitting, will be completed by mid-November, 2018.
October 19, 2017 - The Lufkin District of the Texas Department of Transportation has announced a new Director of Operations to serve in the nine-county district.
October 10, 2017 Lufkin – Resurfacing work is scheduled to begin this week on US 59 North on both north and southbound lanes in Angelina County.
Beginning just north of FM 2021 in Redland, the work will continue to the Angelina River Bridge. Moore Brothers Construction Company, Lufkin, will serve as contractor for the $2.8 million construction project that should be completed in about a month.
October 3, 2017 Lufkin – TxDOT will begin construction next week on SL 287/North Medford Drive in Lufkin to redesign the crossovers near the Ellen Trout Zoo and the George H. Henderson Exposition Center.
September 21, 2017 Lufkin – Work on SL 287 East in Lufkin is continuing as a final surface application is scheduled to be set this week on the southbound side.
Drewery Construction, contractor for the emergency project, has begun the final surface application of asphalt after all lanes were milled and swept. Work will continue from the Moffett Road overpass to Tulane Drive with daily lane closures expected.

In 2017, an observational study of nearly 14,000 children in 14 Texas cities showed 33.5 percent of children from birth to four years old were buckled incorrectly or not at all.
