Tenaha Takes District Home Opener Over Chireno

The Tenaha Tigers Varsity Basketball Team moved their season record to 6-0, and their District 22 2A mark to 1-0 with a 76-62 win over the Chireno Owls. The game was close in the early going, and the score was knotted at 14-14 at the conclusion of the first period of play.

The Tigers trailed by a single point at the midway break with Chireno heading into the locker room with a narrow 25-24 lead.

Thirteen, third-quarter, points by Tiger Hayden Jenkins helped Tenaha take an 11-point lead. The two teams went into the final quarter with THS leading 46-35.

Owl Hank Burks scored 11 of his team-high 19 points in the final stanza to help Chireno score 27 points in the final period but Tenaha got 9 points from Trai Gardner, and 6 from JaQualin Franks, which helped the Tigers team out-pace the Owls 28-27 points in the final stanza.

Franks led the Tigers with 22 points, Jenkins added 16. Gardner and Jay Lloyd added 11 points each, Jaurmez Brock had 4, LaDarrius Garrett 2, and Josh Walters scored a point.

In Junior Varsity action between Tenaha and Chireno, earlier on Tuesday, the Tigers were able to take a narrow 38-37 win in a hard fought contest.

The Tigers Varsity team will start Holiday Hoops action at Tenahas’ Special Events Center on Wednesday, December 28, at 1 p.m. They will play the winner of an earlier contest between Carlisle and Martinsville High Schools.

The Tenaha girls’ varsity team will play at the SEC later in the day, at 2:30 p.m., against either Gary or Harleton High Schools.
