Rams Baseball Park. Friday, March 17, 2017 –
The Joaquin Rams Varsity Baseball Team held off a late Shelbyville Dragons rally to take a 3-1 win at Rams Baseball Field on Friday.
The Rams took a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning, and extended the lead to 2-0 in the bottom of the second inning when senior right fielder Peyton Martinez singled to center-field, and Kase Yates hit an RBI triple to left-field.
The Dragons loaded the bases in the top of the third inning and scored a run on a Cole Ferguson infield single which cut the Ram’s lead to 2-1.
Shelbyville only allowed three Rams batters up to the plate in each the fourth and fifth innings but Ram Hunter Harper scored in the bottom of the sixth inning to extend the Joaquin lead to 3-1.
Three Dragons batters reached base during the top of the seventh inning but good defensive play by the Rams infield and a third-out strikeout by Tray Wilkerson thwarted a Shelbyville comeback attempt.
Joaquin is now 3-0 in District 23 2A play and Shelbyville is 1-2 in conference play.
The Rams will next play the Timpson Bears on March 21 at 6 p.m. at Bears Baseball Field
Shelbyville will host the Martinsville Pirates on March 28 at 6 p.m.
