April 21, 2017. Tenahas Cole DePriest Ballpark –

The Timpson Bears Varsity baseball team improved their District 23 2A record to 5-8, and they raised their season mark to 7-15 with a convincing 16-5 road win over the Tenaha Tigers (2-11).

Neither team is heading to the playoffs as Woden (12-1), Joaquin (9-3), Shelbyville (9-3) and Gary (9-4) have all clinched the district’s four playoff spots with one game remaining.

Tenaha gained a 1-0 lead in the second inning when Cody Foshee led off with a triple and came home to score on a wild pitch.

Timpson rallied in the top of the fourth frame when junior infielder Blake Johnson started the inning with an infield hit which kicked off a rally that saw the Bears get five walks, and three hits including a three runs-batted-in triple to left field by Cutter Smith which gave the Bears a 7-1 lead.

Tenaha bounced back to pull to within 5-7 with base hits from T. Giles and Jaqualin Franks, and a 2 RBI double, and a score on a throwing error, by Juarmez Brock in the bottom of the fourth inning.

The Bears loaded the bases by getting three walks in the top of the fifth inning and scored a run on a fielder’s choice on a ball hit by Gabe Smith. Later in the same inning, Timpson got timely hits by Jaden Johnson and Jon Grogan which helped them gain an 11-5 advantage.

The Bears set the Tigers down 1-2-3 in the bottom of the fifth frame and Tenaha returned the favor in the top of the sixth frame by getting the first three batters out on a ground out to start the inning and two strike outs by Tigers’ relief pitcher Trenton Soto.

The final five runs were scored in the top of the seventh inning when Taujhmon Earl reached base by being hit by a pitch, a Tigers error, a walk, two base hits, and a Cutter Smith triple to left field later helped bring the runs across the plate for the Bears.

Junior Blake Johnson pitched during the bottom of the seventh inning and the Bears retired Tenaha 1-2-3 again, on a grounder and two strikeouts, to end the contest and give Timpson the 16-5 road-win.

Tenaha will travel to Joaquin for the Tigers’ final game, at Rams Field, on Tuesday, April 25 at 6:30 p.m.

Timpson will host the winless Martinsville Pirates on Tuesday, April 25 at 6 p.m. at Bears Ballpark.
