Timpson Routs West Sabine at Shelbyville Dragons Stadium

Shelbyville High School. Saturday, September 2, 2017 – The Timpson Bears defeated the West Sabine Varsity Football team by a lopsided 48-6 score. The game played out at Shelbyville Dragons Stadium, a neutral site due to extreme rains brought on last week by Hurricane Harvey.

Conditions weren’t perfect as extreme heat made Shelbyville’s artificial turf quite steamy for a noon kickoff slated contest. Officials allowed the two teams frequent and extended water breaks to try to help with conditions.

The Bears may have felt some redemption as West Sabine won last year’s contest by a 20-14 margin.

The Bears wasted no time and they scored on their opening drive when Gannon Braddock scored on a quarterback draw from 2 yards out to cap a 54-yard drive. THS led 6-0 with 7:48 left in the first period, after a failed 2-point conversion attempt.

West Sabine’s opening drive lasted seven plays and stalled at their own 45 yard line when they went for it and came up one yard shy on a 4th-down- and -4 yards to go situation with 3.33 left in the opening stanza.

Timpson went up 14-0 after Jordan Osby made a 3-yard rushing touchdown while pushing three Tiger defenders into the end zone. He also ran in the 2-point conversion with 1 ½ minutes left in the first period.

Kasson Gentry pulled in a 22-yard touchdown reception from Jon Grogan with 4:26 left in the first half. Timpson led 20-0 after another failed 2-point try.

Grogan added a 42-yard rushing score on a keeper to give THS a 26-0 lead with 2:33 left in the half. The final score of the first half of play came when Osby scored from 9 yards away and ran in the conversion at the midway intermission buzzer. This gave Timpson a 34-0 lead as the teams headed in to the locker room for halftime.

West Sabine scored their only touchdown of the day when Trevez Galloway capped a 72-yard drive with a 9-yard touchdown on the opening drive of the second half.

Timpson added another Osby touchdown early in the fourth period. Jaden Johnson added an extra point kick which gave the Bears a 41-6 lead with 10:07 left in the ballgame. The final score came when Datrien Bendy stole a pass intended for a Tiger receiver and raced 22 yards for a Timpson score. Johnson added another extra point kick to bring the final score to 48-6.

Timpson held a 264-181 advantage for rushing the football on the day. They out passed the Tigers by gaining 111, completing 10 passes of 15 attempts. West Sabine gained 58 yards passing, completing 5 of10 attempts.

Head Coach Kerry Therwhanger said, “I was pleased. We moved the football fairly consistently. We only had to punt one time. Defensively we were pleased to hold these guys to just one score. I’m proud of our boys. This was a hot game that zapped us pretty good. We will let them recuperate early next week and then get ready to play the Carlisle Indians next week.”

The Bears will travel to Carlisle to face the Indians on Friday, September 8 at 7:30 p.m. Carlisle defeated the Mount Enterprise Wildcats by a 49-7 score.
