This Week in Shelby County Football

This week saw four of Shelby County’s five football teams notch out a win. All teams are now in district competition and each win or loss from this point on will be crucial in qualifying teams for the UIL playoffs.

The Center Roughriders Varsity Football Team secured a crucial 40-28 win over the hometown Chapel Hill Bulldogs last week. The victory boosted the Roughrider’s record to 2-5, and more importantly they raised their District 9 4A-1 mark to 2-1. The win keeps them alive as far as playoff contention. The ‘Riders will host the Carthage Bulldogs who defeated Kilgore High School 50-20, at Carthage, last week. Kickoff is Friday, October 20, 2017 at 7:30 p.m. Carthage boasts a 6-0 overall standing, and a 2-0 conference mark.

The Joaquin Rams beat the Alto Yellowjackets 35-20, at Alto, and the Rams raised their record to 5-1 and their District 2A-1 standing is now 1-0. They will face Shelbyville High School in a cross-county rivalry, at Shelbyville, Friday October 20, 2017, at 7:30 p.m. The Dragons are 1-5, 0-1, and lost their first conference game to the San Augustine Wolves by a 48-7 score.

The Tenaha Tigers received a forfeit from Mount Enterprise High last week to gain their first District 11 2A-2 win. Their overall standing is 7-0. This week the Tigers will host the Wortham Bulldogs on Friday at 7 p.m. Wortham fell to the Timpson Bears last week by a 36-6 score at Timpson.

The Timpson Bears raised their record to 5-1, 1-0, with a 20-14 road win over the Lovelady Lions last Friday. This week they will host the Grapeland Sandies on Friday at 7 p.m. Last week they beat the visiting Overton Mustangs by a 40-24 margin. The Sandies record is 4-2 overall and 1-0 in District 11 2A-2 competition.
