Lady ‘Riders Drop Conference Battle With Lady Lions

The Center Lady Roughriders Varsity Basketball Team dropped a hard fought District 16 4A-2 game to the Henderson Lady Lions by a 53-42 score. Centers’ conference mark now stands at 0-3 and they are 2-15 overall. Henderson is 2-0 in conference games and 10-4 overall.

Jada Hicks scored a bucket which put Center up 2-0 early. Jerkasia Anthony tied the game at 2-2 with a bucket with 7:11 left in the first period. Hicks answered with another score which gave CHS a 4-2 advantage. Hendersons’ Ann Calderon hit a 3-pointer moments later but ‘Rider Taylor Nichols answered with a 3-point bomb just moments later to give CHS a 7-5 lead with four minutes left in the opening frame. Henderson went on an 8-4 scoring run which saw the Lady Lions lead 18-12 at the conclusion of the first quarter.

 Henderson outpaced Center 15-13 in the second period despite Lady ‘Rider Taylor Nichols keeping her team in the game by hitting four 3-pointers during the first half of play. Henderson took a 33-25 lead into the halftime break.

Henderson was able to outscore Center 11-8 in the third period. They took a 44-33 lead into the fourth period.

The Lady Lions went on an 8-0 run to start the final frame. Lady Roughrider Katelyn Bolton broke the Lion’s scoring run with a bucket and a free throw, and later a 3-pointer, which pulled CHS to within 53-37 with 3 minutes remaining. But HHS was able to hold on and take the 53-42 district win.

Henderson was led by Ann Calderon with 15 points.

Center was led by Taylor Nichols with 14 points. Katelyn Bolton had 12, Shanyah Williams 8, Kalei Larock 4, Jada Hicks 4, and Makenzie Mireles had two points.

The Lady Roughriders will play at Tatum High School next Friday, January 19, 2018, with JV starting at 5 p.m.
