Dragons Remain Undefeated in District 22, Earn 75-48 Win Over Rams

Joaquin Rams Gymnasium.  January 19, 2018 –

Ram Tray Wilkerson opened up Friday’s District 22 2A varsity basketball game with a 2 point jumper which gave Joaquin a 2-0 lead early. This proved to be Joaquin’s only lead of the night however as Shelbyville scored seven unanswered points and led 7-2 moments later, in what would eventually be a lopsided 75-48 conference win for the Dragons. This boosted the SHS overall record to 21-3, but more importantly gave them an undefeated conference mark of 6-0. Joaquin has a 1-9 overall mark and are 1-5 in league play.

Wilkerson added another jumper to his resume later in the opening period and teammates,  Elli Huerta and Matthew Silvey, each had buckets which helped Joaquin cut Shelbyville’s lead to 11-14, however Jordan Boykins hit a long 3-pointer at the buzzer to end the first frame and SHS took a 17-11 advantage into the second stanza.

Shelbyville out-scored the Rams 21-7 during the second frame and the Dragons enjoyed a (38-18) 20-point advantage going in to the locker-rooms at the midway break.

Wilkerson hit a 3-pointer to kick off the third period but Shelbyville outpaced Joaquin by outscoring the Rams 17-10. The Dragons took a 55-28 advantage into the fourth quarter.

Joaquin postman Lorenzo Lane had nine points in the fourth quarter this helped the Rams keep pace with the Dragons. Each team had 20 points during the final frame.

Joaquin had three players in double figures, Ellie Huerta scored 15 points, Lorenzo Lane 11, and Tray Wilkerson scored ten.

Shelbyville had four players in double figures, H’Leighen McClelland scored 14, Jakevion Buckley 12, Kyle Tindol 11, and Jordan Boykins had ten points.

Joaquin will play at Woden on Tuesday, January 23, 2018 at 7 p.m. The Eagles are 11-3 on the season and 3-3 in District 22 2A competition.

Shelbyville will host the San Augustine Wolves on Tuesday, January 23, at 7 p.m. The Wolves are 5-3 on the season and 3-2 in District 22 competition.
