Rams Hold Off Bears in District 23 Showdown

Joaquin Rams Ballpark, March 20, 2018 –

The Joaquin Rams Varsity Baseball Team won a District 23 2A game, against their Shelby County rival Timpson Bears, by a 15-9 score. The Rams led by as much as seven runs, midway through the game, but they saw the Bears fight back to tie the game at 9-all in the top of the fifth inning.

Starting Rams’ pitcher Tray Wilkerson struck out nine Bears’ batters while walking six. He gave up five hits.

The Bears had only one baserunner during the first two innings and trailed 1-0, after Kase Yates was hit by a pitch in the bottom of the first inning, and Rams’ teammate Conner Bragg drove him home with a single up the middle, over second base.

Bear Jaden Johnson got on base by legging out an infield hit in the top of the third inning. He later scored on a Rams’ throwing error and tied the game at 1-1.

The Rams answered back with a big rally in the bottom of the third inning and they took a 7-1 lead into the fourth frame.

Timpson scored one run in the top of the fourth inning but Joaquin answered back with two runs which put the score at 9-2 at the start of the fifth frame.

Timpson exploded for the biggest rally of the game in the fifth inning, and tied the game at 9-9 by scoring 7 runs, on three hits, seven walks, and an error.

Joaquin re-took the lead, in the bottom of the fifth inning, by scoring five runs, on three hits and a sac fly, which gave them a 13-9 advantage.

Kase Yates drove in Nick Matthews and Keith Johnson for the Rams’ final two runs in the bottom of the sixth inning. This gave the Rams’ the final 15-9 advantage which held up for the remainder of the seven-inning contest.

Joaquins’ district record now stands at 2-2. Their overall standing is 2-7. They will travel to Woden for a 6 p.m. conference game on Friday, March 23, 2018.

The Timpson Bears are 0-4 in conference action. They are 1-11 overall.  They will host Mount Enterprise, at Timpson Bears’ Ballpark, on Friday, March 23, 2018 at 6 p.m.
