Hometown Dragons Blast Tigers 10-0

Shelbyville High School, March 23, 2018 –

The Shelbyville Dragons won a District 23 Class 2A Varsity baseball game over the visiting Tenaha Tigers, on Friday, by a 10-0 score. The game was called in the fifth inning due to the conferences’ 10-run mercy rule. The Dragons season record now stands at 6 wins and 1 loss, their district mark is 4-0. Tenaha is 1-4 in District 23 play and 1-4 on the season as well.

The Tigers saw only senior CJ Horn reach base in the top of the first inning after he was hit by a pitch. Shelbyville scored four runs in the bottom of the first inning on three errors and three walks.

Tiger Erik Smith reached base after being hit by a pitch at the beginning of the second inning but Zach Clark was able to strike out the remaining three batters faced in the inning.

The Dragons raised their score to 8-0 in the bottom of the second inning by pushing four runs across the plate with three hits, two walks, and a Tigers error.

Austin Williford led off the top of the third inning by drawing a walk for Tenaha. The Tigers had runners on second and third bases after Cody Foshee reached on an infield hit and he and Williford advanced on an error. The Tigers had the bases loaded later after T. Giles was hit by a pitch. The Dragons avoided giving up a score by getting two more strikeouts and an excellent play on a groundout by Dragons’ shortstop Cole Ferguson to retire the side.

Tenaha only allowed one baserunner in the bottom of the third frame and went into the fourth inning still trailing 8-0.

The Dragons were able to strike out all three of the Tigers batters they faced in the fourth and fifth innings while adding a run in the bottom half of both inning to gain the ten-run-rule ‘Mercy-Rule’ win.

Fourteen of the fifteen outs recorded by the Dragons were by striking out the Tigers. The Tigers reached base on four walks and one hit.

Shelbyville reached base on seven hits, seven walks and four errors. Tiger CJ Horn struck out two SHS batters.

Shelbyville will travel to Martinsville High School for a 6 p.m. game on Tuesday, March 27, 2018 at Pirates Field. The Tigers will host the Timpson Bears on Tuesday, March 27, 2018 at 4:30 p.m.
