Rams Fall to Eagles, Still Fighting for Final Playoff Spot

Tuesday, April 17, 2018. Joaquin Rams Ballpark –

The Joaquin Rams Varsity Baseball Team dropped a conference game to district leading Woden High School by a 14-1 score. The game was called in the bottom of the fifth inning due to District 23 2A’s 10-run-rule.

The Woden Eagles wasted no time jumping out in from of the Rams as they went ahead 8-0 in the top of the first inning. Two hit batters and an infield error helped the Eagles load the bases early on. Khristen Goree doubled and helped give WHS a 3-0 lead. An infield error gave the Eagles a 5-0 advantage. The final three runs of the first inning came off of a 3-run homer by Ethan Jacobs.

Joaquin was set down in 1-2-3 order in the bottom of both the first and second innings. The third inning saw Woden load the bases after opening the frame with a hit batter and two free bases on walks. Drew Shifflet earned three runs batted in with a triple. Two errors and a Reid Taylor base hit saw the Eagles extend their lead to 14-0 by the end of the third inning.

Hunter Gates scored in the bottom of the third frame after reaching base on a single to centerfield. He soon stole second base. Tray Wilkerson gave Joaquin two base runners when he walked later. Brock Hughes drove Gates home with a hard hit grounder misplayed by the Eagles’ shortstop.

Woden is in the lead of District 23 with a 12-0 record. Shelbyville is currently in second position with a 10-1 mark. Gary holds third place with a 10-2 conference standing. Joaquin is 5-6 and very much a front runner for the fourth, and final, playoff spot with two games left. Should they win against either Mount Enterprise or Tenaha in their last two games they will clinch the final playoff spot.

They will host the visiting Mount Enterprise Wildcats on Friday, April 20 at 6 p.m. The Wildcats are 4-8.

Timpson (3-7), Tenaha (2-9), and Mount Enterprise (0-12) are not in contention for post season play.
