Robert D. Scarber, 79, of Huxley, passed away Thursday, August 30, 2007. He was born June 4, 1928 in Dreka, Texas to Daniel James Scarber and Bessie Ann Shue Scarber. Robert was a retired business owner, having previously owned Scarber’s store in Huxley. He served in the US Army and was a member of Sam Houston Masonic Lodge and the Huxley Volunteer Fire Department.

Funeral services will be held at 2:00 pm, Saturday, September 1, 2007 at Watson & Sons Funeral Home in Center with Bro. Wayne Bickley officiating. Interment will follow at Strong Cemetery. Visitation will be held from 6:00 pm to 8:00 pm, Friday, August 31, 2007 at Watson & Sons Funeral Home.

Services will be 10 am Saturday, September 1, 2007 at Mangum Funeral Home Chapel with Bro. Jerry Gary officiating. Burial will follow at Old Home Cemetery.

She was born November 22, 1947 to Freddy and Ruby (Davis) Shelton.

Hilton M. Taylor, was born in Center, Texas, June 29, 1924 and was a graduate of Center High School. He passed away August 29, 2007, in Dallas, at the age of 83. Mr. Taylor was an Air Force Veteran, serving during WWII. He was retired from the Dallas County Sheriff's Department where he worked as a DSO. Hilton is predeceased by his loving wife of 52 years, Margie Helen "Totsie" Lawson Taylor in 2002. He is survived by his children, Karen Ann Conley, marcy Lea Selby, Tina Bragg and Michael Taylor, 10 grandchildren, 11 great-grandchildren, sister, Evelyn Coats and brother, Marvin M. Taylor. Funeral services are 9 am Saturday, September 1, 2007 at Jaynes Memorial Chapel in Duncanville, Texas. Burial will follow in Center, Texas at 2 pm, at the Oaklawn Cemetery. Bobbi Carver, 60, of Huxley, passed away Thursday August 23, 2007 at Willis Knighton Hospital, Shreveport, LA.

Services will be 2:00 p.m. Tuesday August 28, 2007 at Strong Church in Huxley with Bro. Jack Forbis officiating. Burial will follow at Strong Cemetery. Visitation will be Monday evening, August 27, 2007 from 5:00 p.m. until 9:00 p.m. at Mangum Funeral Home.

She was born August 15, 1947 in Eunice, Louisiana to parents, O.J and Beatrice (Douga) Tate. She was a member of Toledo Bend Baptist Church in Huxley. She was the cook at Dairy Queen and Shady Oaks for many years.

Grace Stephens Reno, 95, of Center, passed away Sunday, August 19, 2007 at her home. She was born April 7, 1912 in Timpson to Dr. A.D. Nail and Mary Emma Nutt Nail. Ms. Reno was a 1929 graduate of Center High School, and was the last charter member of the First Assembly of God Church in Center.

The Reverend Carolyn Leigh Davis, 71, of Aurora, Colorado, passed away Wednesday, August 15, 2007. She was born on March 18, 1936 in Houston, Texas to William Harvey Speight and Veral Audra Nunn Speight Poole. She was preceded in death by her father, Harvey Speight , mother Audra Poole, her husband, L.B. Davis and sister, Neline Poole Wagonhauser. She is survived by daughters, Leigh Porterfield and husband, Clint of Center, Texas, Rena Rogers of Colorado Springs, Roberta Albi of Denver, son, John C. Rogers, Jr. and wife, Julie of The Colony, Texas and five grand children, Peyton Porterfield, Phillip Porterfield, Rachel Rogers, Mark Rogers and Chandler Stephan.

She received degrees in RN, Counseling, Master of Social Work and Master of Divinity. She served as Rector at a number of Episcopal Churches in Texas and Colorado, all of which she loved dearly.

Jeanell Smith Shofner, passed away peacefully August 14, 2007 after a lengthy illness. Jeanell was born in Sabine County, TX on December 18, 1936 to Ida and Reece Smith. She was preceded in death by her mother, Ida and two sisters. She is survived by her father Reece Smith of Milam, husband of 54 years Morris Shofner, daughters Wanda Naumann and Juanice West of Houston and grandchildren Jarod West and wife Jennifer of Austin, Ashley Naumann of Houston, Julie West of Houston and Heather Naumann of Houston. Jeanell is also survived by brothers Millard Smith of Milam, Lamar Smith of Patroon, Tommy Smith of Brookland and sisters Janice Hughes of Center, Brenda Elliott of Lufkin, extended family and friends. She graduated Shelbyville High School in 1953. Jeanell was a long time resident of Houston living in Spring Branch.

A.C. Goodson - Memorial services for A.C. Goodson will be held at 11:00 a.m. at the First Baptist Church Christian Life Center in Garrison, Texas on Friday, August 17, 2007.

Mr. Goodson passed away on Saturday, August 11, 2007 in Nacogdoches at the age of 91.

Born on August 9, 1916 in Texas City, Galveston County, Texas to James Robert and Minerva Dickenson Goodson as one of 11 siblings. Mr. Goodson loved the Deep East Texas area and has lived in Garrison since 1970.

Mr. Goodson was a graduate of the Rice Institute (now Rice University) and received a Law Degree from the University of Texas Law School in Austin. Mr. Goodson served as a Special Agent for the Federal Bureau of Investigation for five years before joining the Navy following Pearl Harbor. Mr. Goodson served in the Pacific Theater until the war ended, then returned to Houston to set up a Law practice. Mr. Goodson practiced Law for 64 years, served as Justice of the Peace, Garrison City Attorney, a Director at the Commercial State Bank in Garrison and was a quiet contributor to the Garrison community.

Mr. Goodson was an avid reader and forever a student of Texas history. He also loved roaming flea markets and junk shops collecting Texana, primitive tools and furniture.

Mr. Goodson is survived by his loving wife of 50 years, Johnnie Leslie Goodson of Garrison; Son, Alfred Clement Goodson, Jr. and wife Judith of Lansing, Michigan; Son, James Colt Goodson and wife Susan of Houston; Son, Jeffrey Wiley Goodson of Wimberly; Son, Pat Goodson and wife Jill of Dripping Springs; Granddaughter, Anna Elizabeth Goodson of Lansing, Michigan; Stepdaughter, Sheila Bishop and husband Lynn of Humble; Step-grandchildren, Charles Slaughter and Stephanie Neal; Sister, Meredith Strouhal and husband Rudy of Washington State; Sister, Jane and Bob Lawes of Washington State; Sister, Suzanne and Frost Fulle of Washington State; as well as a host of other friends and relatives.

Funeral services for Lois Rhodes, 66, of Timpson will be held at 10 a.m. Tuesday, Aug. 14 at Timpson Missionary Baptist Church, Timpson with the Rev. Sammy Eldredge and Joe Walker officiating. Burial will follow in the Timpson Missionary Baptist Church Cemetary, Timpson. Rhodes was born June 16, 1941 in Waterman and died Saturday, Aug. 11 in Houston. Survivors include her husband, Charles S. Rhodes of Timpson; sons, Marvin Earl Biggar of Center and Chris Rhodes of Timpson; daughter, Deborah Jordan of Spring, and Becky Wallker; brother, James Weldon Burkhalter of Texas City; five grandchildren Grover, Krystal, Keni Jo, Apriland Colt along with one great-grandson Gatlin. And several nephews and nieces. Preceding Rhodes in death were her parents, W.G. Christine Bush Fults Sears, 91, of Nederland passed away Saturday, August 11, 2007. Graveside services will be 10:00 a.m. Tuesday, August 14, 2007 at Oaklawn Memorial Park in Center. Visitation will be held Monday, August 13, 2007 from 5:00 p.m. until 7:00 p.m. at Mangum Funeral Home.

She was born in Center on November 30, 1915 to W.O. and Beulah Bush. She was a resident of Nederland, Texas for over 65 years. Christine was a member of First United Methodist Church of Nederland, and a 50 year member of Nederland Chapter 1079 of the Order of Easter Star. She was also a member of the Business and Professional Women's organization. She worked in the cosmetic counter at Nederland Pharmacy on Boston Ave. for 23 years from 1940 to 1963 and made many lifelong friends.

She is preceded in death by her parents W.O. and Beulah Bush and her husbands Arlon Fults, and N.E. (Sebo) Sears and her only son, James Harold Fults.

She and her husband Sebo, who worked with Halliburton, traveled extensively and lived in many foreign countries including Spain, Cairo, Egypt; South Africa, Bogota, Columbia, South America and London, England.

John “Talmadge” Hickman, 80, of Baytown formerly of Tenaha, passed away Friday August 10, 2007.
Services will be held 2:00 p.m. Tuesday August 14, 2007 at Mangum Funeral Home Chapel with Bro. Mervin Scott and Bro. Mark E. Broussard officiating. Burial will follow at Old Home Cemetery. Visitation will be Monday evening, August 13, 2007 from 5:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. at Mangum Funeral Home.
He was born October 17, 1926 in Panola County to John Terry and Dena Mae Ramsey Hickman. He graduated from Tenaha High School. He was a member of Cedar Bayou Baptist Church in Baytown. He worked for Shell oil where he was an electrician for 35 years before his retirement in 1987.
He is preceded in death by his parents John Terry and Dena Mae Hickman, wife Sue Hickman, sister Emogene Ward, and Brother-in-law Carl Ward.

Leon Monroe "Bo" Wagstaff, age 70, of Center passed away Wednesday, August 8, 2007 at his residence in Center. Mr. Wagstaff was born January 10, 1937 in White City San Augustine, Texas to Clarence Wagstaff and Oletta Tidwell. Mr. Wagstaff served his country in the United States Navy. He was a member of the Boilermakers Local #587 in Orange and a member of the Sam Samford Masonic Lodge #149 in Center. Mr. Wagstaff was of the Pentecostal faith.

Visitation will be held from 6 pm to 8 pm, Friday, August 10, 2007 at Watson and Sons Funeral Home in Center. Funeral services will be held at 10 am, Saturday, August 11, 2007 at Watson and Sons Chapel in Center with Rev. Edward McRae officiating. Interment will follow in the Reynolds Cemetery in Shelby County.

James Edward Stewart, 77, of Center passed away August 8, 2007 at his residence. He was born December 27, 1929 in Nacogdoches to Perry Stewart and Ada Pearline Waggoner Stewart.

James Neal Campbell, joined our heavenly father on Monday, August 6, 2007. Graveside service will be 3 pm, Wednesday, August 8, 2007 at Oaklawn memorial Park in Center, Texas.

The family will receive friends from 5 - 7 PM Tuesday at Claybar Funeral Home in Orange and 1 - 2:45 PM Wednesday at Watson and Sons Funeral Home in Center.

Born May 3, 1932, James grew up in Shelbyville, where he attended high school and met wife of 51 years, Mary Helen Boles Campbell.

An outstanding athlete in high school he later attended Stephen F. Austin University. Upon graduation from SFA, James was commissioned an officer in the U S Marine Corps. Following his military discharge, he and his wife Mary Helen, moved to Orange, where they raised their beloved daughter Renee. James taught and coached at Bridge City High School before joining Goodrich/Bayer Corporation where he retired in 1995. A longtime member of Sunset Grove Country Club, he leaves many lifelong friends and golf partners and will continue to watch the "Raiders" from above during their weekly game.

An avid gardener, James was a kind and generous man. His strength of character and respect for all people is the legacy he leaves for his family to carry forward. A loving and devoted husband, father and grandfather. He will be missed every day and never forgotten.

His is survived by his wife, Mary Helen, Father, R.W. Campbell of Shelbyville, Sister, and brother in law, Marjorie and Trevor Doggett of Shelbyville, Daughter and Son in law, Renee and ALan Colyer of Houston, and many more relatives and friends in Center, Shelbyville and Orange.

Albert Raymond Sallee, Jr

The visitation for Albert Raymond Sallee, Jr, (Al) will be at Laird Funeral Home in Nacogdoches, Sunday August 5, from 5 pm to 7 pm. The funeral will be Monday August 6, at 10 am at Lairds with burial to follow in Old Prospect Cemetery in Rusk County. Al died Friday, August 3 at approximately 5:15pm from injuries he received in a farm tractor -18-wheeler accident on Hwy 259 near the family's home in Mt. Enterprise.

Hughy Gene Bailey, age 64, of Center passed away August 3, 2007 at Pine Grove Nursing Home in Center. Mr. Bailey was born March 11, 1943 in Victoria, Texas to J. Hugh Bailey and Emma-Lee Clark Bailey. Mr Bailey was a farmer and a member of the Neuville Baptist Church.

Graveside services will be held at 1:00 pm, Monday, August 6, 2007 at the Neuville Cemetery in the Neuville Community with Bro. Jack Forbis officiating.

Her life was a wonderful example for everyone who knew her. She will be missed by sons, Chet P. Sanders and his wife Betty and Mike Sanders, both of Dallas. H. C. Wallis “Bud” Holt age, 91 lifelong resident of Center, Texas passed away, Wednesday, August 1, 2007 at Greenbriar Nursing Home in Tyler.

Graveside services will be 10:00 a.m., Saturday, August 4, 2007 at Oaklawn Memorial Park with Bro. Billy Freeman officiating, no visitation is planned.

He was born May 14, 1916 in Shelby County to parents, H. C. Holt & Lilly Belle Wallis Holt. He graduated from Center High School in 1934. He married Jessie Syble Adams Holt in 1938. He attended Shipfitter National Defense Training School in Nacogdoches in 1942. He was attached to the 4th Army Headquarters and served in the Tactical Reconnisance 5th Army Air Base in Itami, Japan as a Staff Sgt. He Retired from REA, Deep East Texas Electric Co-op in San Augustine, Texas. He was a member of St. Marks United Methodist Church here in Center and served on the Administrative Board when he was active and in good health. He was kind and caring and helped those who needed it without making it known.

He is preceded in death by his parents, H. C. & Belle Holt , Wife, Syble Holt , 2 Brothers, William Henry “Bill” Samford and Ray Holt.

Clyde Eugene (Gene) Watson, Jr., 61 departed this Earth on Monday July 30, 2007 in Dallas, Texas following post-surgical complications. A Native of Center, Texas he had been a longtime resident of Dallas and owner of Ginger's Petals and Bows flower shop in Mesquite, Texas. He was a graduate of Center High School Class of 1964. He received a Bachelor of Science Degree from Stephen F. Austin State College in 1968 and attended Baylor University School of Law until returning to Center to work in the family business, Watson and Watson Furniture Store. Gene was an active member and officer of the Center Jaycees for several years and served as a director, Judge and board member of numerous Miss Texas state and local beauty pageants. He was the owner of Ebbies Oddities in Center prior to moving to Dallas.
Gene was the youngest son of Clyde and Elizabeth Watson, grandson of Tom and Minnie Watson and Joe and Lillian Hays, all of whom preceded him in death. He is survived by one brother Dr. Thomas J. Watson of Dubai, United Arab Emirates, one sister Cathryn Hall and husband Floyd of Brazoria, Texas, aunts Mrs. Ruth Smith of Center and Mrs. Joyce Thom of Houston, numerous cousins, step nieces and nephews, a host of friends and his loving pets, Princess, Ginger, Daphine and George. Gene had a passionate love for his friends, relatives, and every aspect of life. He traveled extensively throughout the world and had a deep appreciation of the quality of his life. His creative skills were in fact, a gift from God. Visitation will be Sunday, August 5th from 6:00 to 8:00 PM at Watson and Sons Funeral Home, in Center. Funeral Services will be held the following day at 3:00 PM officiated by his cousin, Rev. Robert B. Hays assisted by Bro. Mike Scrimpshire, and music provided by life long friend, Janis Lacy Compton.
