Gene Hoyt Bittick, 72 of Center, TX died May 30, 2007 at his home in Houston, TX surrounded by his loving children, after a courageous 3 year battle with cancer. Gene was born March 5, 1935 to Albert Elijah Bittick and Elizabeth Bertha Leah Waller in Camp Worth, TX. He was a 1955 graduate of Pearland High School. He served in the U.S. Army. On Dec 5, 1959, he married Vanda Sue Scott in San Augusting, TX. Gene was an Industrial Engineer at Cameron Iron Works in Houston for over 30 years until he started Gene Bittick Signs in which he provided unsurpassed quality until the age of 71 years old! He enjoyed his children and was loved by all that had the luck to meet him. He loved being with his large family and fishing.

Proceeded in death by father and mother, brother Garland, father-in-law Morris E Scott of Jasper, TX.

Survivors: Son Scott, granddaughters Cameron and Stephanie of Ridgefield, CT.
Daughter Sherry, son-in-law Ed Maloy, grandchildren Steven, Meagan, Erica, Heather and Makaylee of New Braunfels, TX.

Joel Marty, 41, of Center, passed away Tuesday, May 29, 2007. He was born October 25, 1965 in Dallas to Charles Eugene Marty and Lola Mae Robins Barnfield Marty. Mr. Marty was of the Baptist faith.

Funeral services will be held at 10:00 am, Saturday, June 2, 2007 at Watson & Sons Funeral Home in Center with Rev. Jason Hebert officiating. Interment will follow at Old Salem Cemetery in Shelby County.

Cody Josiah West, 21, of Center, passed away Friday, May 25, 2007 in an automobile accident. He was born July 10, 1985 in Longview to Troy Curtis West and Kimberly Kay Webb West. Cody was a member of the First Baptist Church in Center.

Funeral services will be held at 2:00 pm, Sunday, May 27, 2007 at the First Baptist Church in Center with Rev. Carl Smith and Rev. Michael Hale officiating. Interment will follow at Oaklawn Memorial Park in Center.

Jimmy Ray Stanley, 69, of Tenaha, passed away Thursday, May 24, 2007 in Houston. Mr. Stanley was born June 6, 1937 in Groveton to Benjamin Stanley and Irene Webb Stanley. He was the owner and operator of Stanley's Wood Shop in Tenaha and he served in the National Guard for a number of years.

Funeral services will be held at 10:00 am, Saturday, May 26, 2007 at the First Baptist Church in Tenaha with Bro. Russ Atwood officiating. Interment will follow at Ramah Cemetary in Tenaha.

Ruth Lee Collum Hinton, 71, of Deer Park passed away Wednesday, May 23, 2007 at her home. She was born November 4, 1935 in Shelbyville to Jim and Lela Collum. Ruthie was married to Gaylon Hinton for 42 years before he passed away in 1996. She was a dedicated wife, mother, maw maw, aunt and friend to all who knew her. Ruthie loved her children and grandchildren and was happiest when she was with her family. She was a life long member of Thomas Avenue Baptist Church in Pasadena and a member of Sardis Baptist Church when she moved back to Center.

Funeral services will be held at 11:00 am, Friday, May 25, 2007 at Watson and Sons Funeral Home in Center with

Bro. Luke Garrett officiating. Interment will follow at Strong Cemetery in Shelby County.

Marinette “Mary” Okun, 80, of Lumberton died Saturday, May 19, 2007 at Christus Hospital St. Elizabeth.

A native of Marseilles, France and a resident of the area since 1960, Mary was a retired production assistant at Helena Labs.

She is survived by her daughter, Curtis Ann Okun of Lumberton; sons, Michael Henry Bush and his wife Joyce, and Danny Paul Bush and his wife Brenda all of Center, Texas; four grandchildren; and seven great grandchildren. Mary was preceded in death by her husband August “Sidney” Okun.

Funeral service will be 10:00 a.m. Tuesday, May 22, 2007 at Broussard’s, 1605 North Major Drive, Beaumont. Graveside service will be 12:30 p.m. at Hopewell Cemetery in Woodville. A gathering of family and friends will be from 5:00 until 8:00 p.m. Monday, May 21, 2007 at the mortuary.

Hairloyd Emanis, 81, of Center passed away Saturday, May 19, 2007 in Tyler. He was born April 21, 1926 in Shelby County to Will Emanis and Vada Graves Emanis. Mr. Emanis was retired from the oilfield business.

Graveside services will be held at 11:00 am on Monday, May 21, 2007 at New Hope Cemetery in Shelby County with Bro. Henry Hughes and Bro. Roger Purdy officiating.

Honorary pallbearers will be Mr. Emanis' nieces and nephews.

J.D. Snelson, 86, of Garrison, passed away Thursday, May 17, 2007 at a Nacogdoches hospital. He was born November 30, 1920 in Garrisonto Will Allie Snelson and Erma Stephenson Snelson. Mr. Snelson was a self-employed plumber and electrician. He attended Garrison Church of Christ and served in the US Army.

Funeral services will be held at 2:00 pm, Saturday, May 19, 2007 at Garrison Funeral Home Chapel with Aaron Golden officiating. Interment will follow at Shady Grove Cemetery in Shelby County.

Mary Berwald, 83, of Center, passed away May 13, 2007 at a local nursing home. She was born June 15, 1924 in St. Louis, Missouri to John Nelson Warlick and Helen Chitty Warlick.

At the family’s request Ms. Berwald has been cremated and there will be a private ceremony for her in St. Louis, Missouri at a later date.

Doborah K. Ruddell Jones, 48, of Center, passed away Tuesday, May 15, 2007 at a friend’s home in Marshall. She was born June 19, 1958 in Carthage to Johnnie Ruddell and Marjorie Humphries Ruddell. Mrs. Jones attended the First Assembly of God in Center.

Ruth Haire, age 98 of Tyler passed away Thursday, May 10, 2007 in Tyler, Texas.

Graveside services will be 3:00 pm Saturday, May 12, 2007 at the Rather Cemetery in Shelbyville.

She was born October 7, 1908 in Mossville, Mississippi. She was a school teacher for Arp I.S.D. for 43 years where she taught primary grades. She was a member of the Arp First Baptist Church.

She is preceded in death by her parents, Wiley W. Haire who passed away in 1939 and Minnie Lee Meadow who passed away in 1958 and Brother, W.S. Haire.

She is survived by: Sister in law, Bobbie Haire of Dallas. Nieces and Nephews and Great Nieces and Nephews.

Services are under the direction of Mangum Funeral Home, Center, Texas.


John Roy Hetherington, 55, of Logansport, passed away Wednesday, May 9, 2007. He was born February 29, 1952 in Bossier City, Louisiana to John Roy Hetherington, Sr. and Dorothy Mae Moore Hetherington. Mr. Hetherington had been a technician for Bell South for 34 years. He was of the Methodist Faith.

Gerald Don Hooper, 69, of Arlington passed away Thursday, May 9, 2007 at his residence. He was born November 28, 1937 in Longview to WIlliam Forest Hooper and Odell English Hooper. Mr. Hooper was a 1956 Graduate of Pine Tree High School and a 1966 graduate of the University of Texas at Arlington. He served his country in the Air Force.

Funeral services will be held at 10:00 am on Saturday May 12, 2007 at Watons and Sons Chapel in Center with Bro. Mike Cross officiating. Interment will follow in the Jackson Cemetery in Joaquin.

John Henry Lynch, 78, of Huntington , was born August 23, 1928, in San Augustine County, Texas, the son of the late Lula Mae (Cooper) Lynch and Roy (Dick) Lynch. He passed away on Friday, April 20, 2007, in Hospice in the Pines in Lufkin , Texas .

Services were held Monday, April 23, 2007, in Gipson Funeral Home Chapel with Reverend, Don Chumley and Tim Lynch, officiating. Interment was in Garden of Memories , Memorial Park in Lufkin .

Mr. Lynch was retired from Texas Foundry in Lufkin . He served his country in the United States Army during WWII. Mr. Lynch was a loving husband, father, grandfather, great grandfather and brother. He was of the Baptist faith.

James Robert Allen was born on August 12, 1937 to James Thomas Allen and Kathleen Watson Allen in Jacksonville, Texas and passed away on May 4, 2007 in Huntsville, Texas.

Mr. Allen is survived by Melissa and Mark Hayhurst, daughter and son-in-law, of Humble; Thomas Stefan Allen, son, of Nacogdoches; Hayden Allen and Mason Allen grandsons; and Carolyn Sharon Allen, sister, of Huntsville and was preceded in death by his parents.

He graduated from Sam Houston State University, lived in Center, Texas over twenty years where he taught a business class in the local high school and was a principal at C.H. Daniels Intermediate School. He was a workaholic and a collector who had a love for history and genealogy. He also enjoyed many hours traveling and staying in his RV.

A graveside service will be held Tuesday, May 8 at 11:00am at the Oakwood Cemetery. He will lie in state on Monday, May 7 from Noon to 7:30pm at the Sam Houston Memorial Funeral Home.

Dee Rankin, 68, of Timpson, passed away Monday May 7, 2007. The family has requested that she be cremated. A memorial service will be held Saturday May 12, 2007 in the home of her daughter, Theresa Anderson in Timpson from 2 p.m. until 4:00 p.m.

She was born January 15,1939 to Clarence Evans and Rolfernene Harris Freeman. She was a member of Pleasant Grove Missionary Baptist Church. She was a homemaker.

Rose Mae Willoughby Jordan King Sepulvado, 78, of Hallsville, passed away Wednesday, May 2, 2007 at a Longview nursing center. She was born June 2, 1929 in Shelby County to Henry Clayton Willoughby and Tressie A. Bryd Willoughby. Ms Sepulvado was retired from Libbey Glass Company in Shreveport. She was a member of First Baptist Church in Hallsville and the Kay Hilburn Sunday School class.

Funeral services will be held at 4:00 pm, Friday, May 4, 2007 at Watson and Sons Funeral Home in Center with Bro. Pat Windham officiating. Interment will follow at Sardis Cemetery in Shelby County.

Pallbearers will be Anthony Paddie, Cody Bartlett, Charles Chambliss, Wayne Willoughtby, Robert Jordan, Toby Jordan, Rhett Treche and Shane Willoughby.

Honorary pallbearer will be Alvis "Buddy" Willoughby.

Anna Mae Day Shillings, 97, of Center, passed away Monday, April 30, 2007. She was born November 4, 1909 in Shelby County to Monroe Day and Lela Coston Day. Mrs. Shillings was a member of the First Baptist Church of Center. She was a homemaker and had lived in Center most of her life.

Funeral services will be held at 1:00 pm, Thursday, May 3, 2007 at Watson and Sons Funeral Home in Center with Rev. Carl Smith, Rev. Mike Shillings and Rev. Michael Hale officiating. Interment will follow at Oaklawn Memorial Park in Center.

Pallbearers will be Patrick Nethery, Michael Nethery, Mark Shillings, Larry Shillings, Jeff Shillings and Rev. Michael Shillings.
