Marcelene Roddy - Graveside funeral services for Marcelene Roddy, 79, of Cushing will be Wednesday, at 2 pm, at the McKnight Cemetery in Cushing with Rev. Chester Hayness officiating.

Mrs. Roddy died Sunday in Center, Texas. She was born November 18, 1928 in Cushing, Texas to marshall A. & Metta Lene Owens Benison. She lived in Cushing for the last 26 years and was a homemaker and was a member of the Landmark Baptist Church. She had also lived in Houston for many years. She was preceded in death by sister, Novilee Gathright and brother, Kenneth Benison Sr.

Baby Ruth Crump, age 94, of Deer Park, services will be at 11 am, Monday, April 28, 2008 in Taylor Funeral Home Chapel, Timpson, with Rev. Cliff Hughes officiating. Interment will follow in Mt. Olive Cemetery, Timpson. Mrs. Crump passed away Friday, April 25, 2008 in Deer Park, Texas.

Born February 16, 1914 in Shelby County, Texas, she was the daughter of the late Walter and Ruth (Scoggins) Cogbur. She retired as a cafeteria manager with Shell Chemical Company and was a Baptist.

Baby Ruth Crump is survived by sons Curtis Crump and wife Sharon of Pasadena, Texas and Jimmy Frank Crump and wife Ann of Deer Park, Texas. 9 grandchildren, David Crump and wife Maria, Barbara Hebert and husband Don, Leslie Fitzhenry and husband Mark, Steven Crump and wife Lesie Ann, Keith Crump, Beverly Murphy and husband Jerry, Mary Hart, Peggy Sterkel and husband Gary and Karen Morgan and husband George. 11 great grandchildren and 6 great great grandchildren. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by husband Clyde Crump and son Stanley Joe Crump.

Hazel Margaret English Vaughn, 91, of Huxley, passed away Saturday, April 26, 2008 at Shelby Regional Medical Center. She was born September 1, 1916 in Shelbyville to Robert Fulton English and Sophia Della Raymond English. Ms. Vaughn was a member of Lydia Missionary Baptist Church.

Visitation will be held at from 5:00 pm to 9:00 pm, Sunday, April 27, 2008 at Watson & Sons Funeral Home in Center. Era Lou Gray Ramsey, 73, of Joaquin, passed away Saturday, April 26, 2008 at her residence. She was born January 5, 1935 in Joaquin to James Edison Gray and Bennye Oates Gray. Mrs. Ramsey was a member of Logansport Missionary Baptist Church.

Eddie Golding, 80 of Winnie, died April 25, 2008 at Memorial Hermann Baptist Beaumont Hospital. He had lived in Winnie for forty-seven years and was a retired boilermaker with the Gulf Oil Corporation.

Funeral services will be 2:00 p.m. Sunday, at First Baptist Church of Winnie with burial to follow in Fairview Cemetery under the direction of Broussard’s in Winnie. A gathering of family and friends will be from 5:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. Saturday at the funeral home.


Eddie is survived by his wife, Beth Golding; daughters, Lynda Hoffpauir and her husband, Gary, Gena Campbell and her husband, Scott, Brenda East and her husband, Todd all of Winnie; brother, T. R. Golding and his wife, Dot of Center; sister, Maxine Christian of Tenaha; grandchildren, Royce Spencer and his wife, Kacie, Cole Hoffpauir, Keaton East, Mattie East, Carson Campbell.

Odis Tidwell age 87 of Center passed away Friday, April 25, 2008 at his home.

Services will be 2:00 p.m. Sunday, April 27, 2008 at Mangum Funeral Home Chapel with Bro. Michael Hale officiating. A Masonic service will follow and burial will follow at Oaklawn Memorial Park.

Visitation will be Saturday from 5:00 pm until 8:00 pm at Mangum Funeral Home.

He was born October 13, 1920 in Guntersville, Alabama to parents, William Franklin Tidwell & Charlotte Roden Tidwell. He was a WWII Veteran and he served in North Africa, Italy & Austria. He and his son owned & operated Tidwell Construction Company here in Center for many years. He was a local scout leader, little league coach & commissioner. Also he was a member of Sam Samford Lodge # 149, Newbern Lodge #97, Center Chapter # 125, Center Council # 73 and Frank Sexton Commandery # 46. He also enjoyed fishing and he was a member of First Baptist Church, Center.

Bill Burkett, age 95, of Broaddus, Texas, passed away Thursday afternoon, April 24, 2008.

Born Dec. 19, 1912, as a son of the late Simon Peter and Ellen Jane (Roberts) Burkett, Bill was a lifelong resident of the Hebron Community between Pineland and Broaddus. He was a farmer and retired from the U.S. Forest Service as a forester. Bro. Burkett was also an active member of Hebron Missionary Baptist Church.

He is survived by his wife of eight years, Audrey Howard Patrick Burkett of Broaddus; daughter, Eunice McLain and husband Ray of Crockett, Texas; son, Homer Burkett and wife Betty of Nacogdoches, Texas; step-daughters, Susie Burkett and husband Dale of Huntington, Texas, and Billie Ruth Price and husband Kenneth and Brenda Louise Wade, all of Center, Texas; step-sons, Shurl Patrick of Center, Texas, and Roy and Linda Patrick of Huntington, Texas; a sister, Lily Eninger of Luling, Texas; grandsons, Brian Burkett of Atlanta, Georgia, and Clint McLain and wife Gretchen of Palestine, Texas; granddaughters, Diane Burkett of Sugar Land, Texas, and Jana McLain of Iola,Texas; three great-grandchildren; and numerous step-grandchildren and step-great-grandchildren.

Robbie C. Riley age 96 passed away Sunday, April 20, 2008 in Fulshear, Texas.

A Family Graveside service for Robbie C. Riley will be 11:00 am Thursday at Woods Cemetery in Tenaha and a Memorial Service for family and friends will follow at 1:00 pm on Thursday at First United Methodist in Tenaha with Bro. Jim Bradley officiating. No visitation is planned.

Robbie was born May 1, 1911 to Sam and Rosa (Crow) Crawford in Joaquin, Texas. Graduating from Joaquin High School, she attended nurses training at Lubbock Sanitarium (later the Methodist Hospital) in Lubbock, Texas obtaining her Registered Nurse degree. Returning to Shelby County in 1933, she did private nursing throughout the county.

December 28, 1936, she married Knox Riley of Tenaha. Together, they operated the K & K Café in Joaquin, spent three years in Pasadena during the war, returning to Tenaha in 1943 as owner and operator of the Queen Theatre. She raised two boys, Dan and Calvin, graduating from Tenaha High School in 1955 and 1959 respectively.

Beginning in 1958, she held various nursing positions at Panola General Hospital in Carthage for over 20 years. Following retirement, she served as school nurse at Tenaha schools and nursing supervisor at Center Nursing Home.

Her favored past times were fishing on Lake Murval, knitting, crochet and needlepoint.

She has been a member of the Tenaha First United Methodist Church since 1943. She served as pianist and organist for many years and was an active member of the United Methodist Women organization.

She is survived by her son, Dan and daughter-in-law Gloria, of Fulshear, Texas and son, Calvin of Denver, Colorado; Granddaughter, Angela Gasser and Great Grandchildren, Kaitlin and Christopher, of Katy, Texas; and Grandson, Christopher Riley of Fulshear, Texas and Doha, Qatar. She is also survived by one niece and five nephews. She was preceded in death by her husband of 60 years, Knox Riley, and her sister, Ercyle Rogers of Center, Texas, and nephew, Robert Neal Rogers.

She has resided in the Houston area for the past 10 years.

Nicole was a homemaker and loving mother. She loved movies and music and was a member of Pine Grove Baptist Church.

William Walter "Bunk" Beck, 90 of Shelbyville, passed away Friday, April 18, 2008 in Center. He was born October 10, 1917 in Shelbyville to Walter B. Beck and Carrie Helpinstill Beck. Mr. Beck was a graduate of Stephen F. Austin State University and served in the Army Air Force during World War II. He was retired from the Shelbyville Independent School District. Mr. Beck was a member of Shelbyville United Methodist Church.

Hazel “Sallie” McDaniel, 95, of Tenaha, passed away Tuesday, April 15, 2008 at her home. She was born September 22, 1912 in Shelby County to John Wilburn McDaniel and Lonie Etta Foster McDaniel. Ms. McDaniel was a member of the First Baptist Church of Tenaha, where she was very involved with First Baptist sewing ministry. She also taught children’s Sunday School class there for over 20 years.

Visitation will be held from 6:00 pm to 8:00 pm, Thursday, April 17, 2008 at Watson & Sons Funeral Home in Center. Funeral services will be held at 1:30 pm, Friday, April 18 at the First Baptist Church of Tenaha with Bro. Russ Atwood and Bro. Bill Holmes officiating. Gwenieth Louise Wedgeworth Tyer, 88, of Timpson, passed away Monday, April 14, 2008, in Nacogdoches. Her services will be held at 11:00am, Wednesday, April 16, 2008, in First Baptist Church of Timpson, interment to follow in Woodlawn Cemetery in Timpson. Officiating will be Rev. Billy Gene Walker, Rev. Josh Walters and Rev. Clark Stricklin.

Born on July 8, 1919, in Dotson, Panola County; she was the daughter of Lonnie F. and Monnie (Griffin) Wedgeworth. She was a graduate of Timpso High School and a member of First Baptist Church of Timpson. Gwenieth and Leonard Dean Tyer were married August 16, 1937, and he preceded her in death on September 12, 1981.

Gwenieth Tyer loved her God, family and friends. Holidays brought Gwenieth much pleasure as she prepared the traditional feasts for her family. Many families in Timpson were also blessed with her delicious food as she ministered to others. Her love of flowers was evident with her beautifully landscaped yard.

Survivors include daughter, Linda Kay Tyer Nix, of Timpson; grandsons Leonard Milton Nix and wife Terrie of Timpson and Jim Leslie Nix and wife Karen of Nacogdoches; great grandson Marcus Leonard Nix of Austin; great granddaughter Macy Kaye Nix of Timpson; brother L. F. Wedgeworth, Jr. and wife Barbara of Carthage; sister Syble Keeling of Timpson; nephew Michael R. Champagne of Shreveport, LA; nieces Martha Nell Keeling Newman of Shreveport and Vicki Keeling Bush of Livingston; former son-in-law Jerry Bob Nix of Center. In additon to her parents and husband, she was preceded in death by 2 infant children and sister Christine Wedgeworth Champagne.

Lance Ray Larsen, 38, of Broaddus died Friday, April 11, 2008, at his residence.

He was born July 23, 1969, in Houston. Larsen had worked as a carpenter in the construction industry.
Survivors: his daughter, Brittany Kathleen Larsen of Splendora; his daughter's mother, Jenny Marie Buuck of Splendora; mother, Johnnie Kathleen (Small) Larsen of Splendora; father, Otis Ray Larsen of Broaddus; and aunts, uncles, and cousins.

Edward H. Carriker, 82, a retired dentist, vice president of BlueCross BlueShield of Texas, local civic leader and decorated veteran of two wars, passed away Friday, April 4, 2008, from complications he suffered from a fall while picking up pine needles from his beloved pine trees.
Funeral: 3:30 p.m. Tuesday at Moore Funeral Home Chapel.
Memorials: Donations in Dr. Carriker's honor may be made to the charity of donor's choice.
As chairman of the Fluoridation Committee of the Fort Worth Dental Society in 1964 and 1965, Dr. Carriker successfully led the effort to have fluoride added to Fort Worth's water supply to help prevent tooth decay.
Edward Henry Carriker was born June 7, 1925, to Lofton and Elva Baker Carriker in the piney woods of Center. In 1943 at the age of 17 he volunteered for the Marines to fight in World War II and entered the Navy's V-12 college program, graduating as a second lieutenant in July 1945.
His unit was preparing for a costly and bloody invasion of Japan when the atomic bombs dropped on Hiroshima and Nagasaki ended the war.
After losing a tooth in a boxing match, Ed decided to become a dentist and received his D.D.S. from the University of Texas School of Dentistry in 1950 and joined the Army Dental Corps.
He served during the Korean War as a first lieutenant and then captain, assistant medical surgeon in the first MASH unit assigned to General Douglas MacArthur's vaunted X Corps.
He participated in the invasion of Inchon, the subsequent invasion of Wonsan, the march to the Yalu River and the Battle of the Chosin Reservoir, which saw some of the most devastating combat of the war.
After completing his military service, Dr. Carriker moved to Fort Worth in 1953 to establish a successful dental practice. He was active in local, state and national dental associations, serving on the board of the Fort Worth District Dental Society for seven years, including a term as president of the society. He was a Fort Worth delegate several times to the Texas and American Dental Association and was chairman of the state meeting in 1975.
He was made a fellow in the American College of Dentists in 1968, a fellow in the International College of Dentists in 1969, and a fellow in the Academy of General Dentistry in 1970.
Dr. Carriker was active in community service for a quarter century in the Fort Worth area, including donating dental services to the Lena Pope Home and the Indigent Dental Clinic.
He was a past president of the Northwest Fort Worth Kiwanis Club, former member of Key Clubs International, a former director of Security State Bank, former member of Ridglea Country Club and former deacon of Ridglea Presbyterian Church.
In 1974 he left private practice to become vice president of dental programs for BlueCross BlueShield of Texas in Dallas.
For the next 15 years Dr. Carriker developed and managed the company's dental health insurance program for the state of Texas.
Upon his retirement he and his wife, Darlene, relocated to Arlington, where he remained until his death.
Although retired he continued to be a highly-respected member of his profession. He received the 50-Year Award from the Texas Dental Association in 2001 and the Fort Worth Dental Society's Veteran's Honor Award in 2003.
Ed excelled at sports in high school and college, where he ran track and was a lifelong sports enthusiast.
For many years after his retirement, he participated as a swimmer in the Senior Olympics, winning scores of medals. He continued to swim almost every day until his most recent illness.
Survivors: Wife, Darlene Power Carriker of Arlington; daughters, Dee Gulledge and Kay Carriker and her husband, Bryan Kelley of Fort Worth; stepchildren, Gary Wright of Saginaw, Ron Wright of Arlington and Becky Wright of Arlington.

Rose Lee Hines was born in Arkansas on January 22, 1927. Her father was the late Sloan Monroe. On December 26, 1967, she married Dwight O. Hines and he survives her. She was a member of Spring of Living Waters Church, Timpson.

In addition to her husband Dwight Hines, of Timpson, she is also survived by three children. Troy W. Jean Flournoy, 75, of Timpson, passed away Sunday, April 6, 2008 in a Nacogdoches hospital. She was born May 28, 1932 in the Folsom Chapel community to Ernest T. Bourghs and Thelka Owens Bourghs. Mrs. Flournoy was a homemaker, mother and grandmother. She was a longtime member of the Folsom Chapel Baptist Church, where she also was a member of the Adult Sunday School Class.

Mr. Broadway passed away Wednesday, April 2, in Nacogdoches Memorial Hospital. Born February 8, 1930, in Brownfield, Texas, he was the son of the late Sam J. and Della J. (Allen) Broadway. On August 14, 1951, he and Charlotte Boles were married and were blessed with 56 years together. Forrest was a graduate of Nacogdoches Business College. He served in the U.S. Army during the Korean War and was a lifetime member of the Disabled American Veterans. He was also a member of Timpson American Legion Post #90. During his life, he attended Pentecostal and Methodist churches.

Forest Broadway was owner of the first coin operated laundry Quick Clean in Timpson and Cushing, owner of Tracy's Malt Shop and Tracy's Coffee Shop, was a salesman with Ace and Quality Fence Companies for 30 years, and operated Broadway's Fireworks for 30 years.

Adam Heady, 20, of Center, passed away Tuesday, April 1, 2008 due to an automobile accident. He was born April 11, 1987 in Center to Denny Lee Heady Rose Mary Soto. He was a member of St. Therese Catholic Church in Center.

Visitation will be held from 4:00 pm to 7:00 pm, Saturday, April 5,2008 at Watson & Sons Funeral Home in Center, with a Rosary to follow starting at 7:00. Funeral services will be held at 3:00 pm, Sunday, April 6, 2008 at St. Therese Catholic Church. Interment to follow at Powdrill Cemetery.

Pallbearers will be Eric Williams, Justin Williams, Michael Mangrum, Ramiro Soto, Ruben Soto and Vince Walker.

Mrs. Willie Rushing Tindall, age 90, of San Augustine County, Texas, passed away Monday, March 31, 2008, in San Augustine County.

Mrs. Tindall was born Aug. 11, 1917, in Trinity County, Texas, as a daughter of the late Charles and Beulah (Christie) Rushing and was a retired school teacher. She was a longtime resident of San Augustine County and a member of Macune Baptist Church.

Survivors: her husband, Howard Tindall of San Augustine County; daughter and son-in-law, Huweda and Richard Collins of New Caney, Texas; son, Kenneth Waggonner of Lufkin, Texas; step-children, Keith Tindall of Florida and Brenda Young and husband Kenneth of Black Jack community, Texas; a sister, Alice Golson of Lindale, Texas; 11 grandchildren; three step-grandchildren; 29 great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandchild.

Funeral services will be held at 2:00 p.m. Wednesday, April 2, at Trinity Baptist Church on Hwy. 83 in Broaddus, Texas, with Pastor Don Lofton officiating. Interment will follow at Broaddus Cemetery.

Jimmie Louise Boles, 69, of Center, passed away Monday, March 31, 2008 at a local nursing home. She was born September 14, 1938 in Center to James E. Nail and Hazel Doris Sowell Nail. Ms. Boles was a member of the Order of the Eastern Star, and was also a member of the First Baptist Church of Center. She was the credit manager at Windham’s Ivan Smith Furniture for thirty years.

Visitation will be held from 6:00 pm to 8:00 pm, Tuesday, April 1, 2008 at Watson & Sons Funeral Home in Center. Funeral services will be held at 11:00 am, Wednesday, April 2, 2008 at Watson & Sons Chapel with Rev. John Bender officiating. Interment will follow at Oaklawn Memorial Park in Center.

Pallbearers will be Mark Ivey, John Sancton, Darren Wiggins, Dr. Keith Miller, Don Stewart, John Dean Windham and Jack Lout.
