Larry Oliver, 55, of Center, passed away Sunday June 22, 2008 at his residence.
He was born February 4, 1953 to Elize and Ruby (Eaves) Oliver in Shelby County.
He graduated from Center High School. He owned and operated a chicken farm for many years.

Elnora Black, 86, of Joaquin, passed away Monday June 30, 2008.

Services will be 2:00 p.m. Wednesday July 2, 2008 at Mangum Funeral Home Chapel with Ron Brown and Elmer Matthews officiating. Burial will follow at Oaklawn Memorial Park in Center, Texas.
Visitation will be Tuesday July 1, 2008 from 5:00 p.m. until 7:00 p.m. at Mangum Funeral Home.

She was born February 25, 1922 to Horace and Nora (Bowlin) Neel. She was a member of First Presbyterian Church in Joaquin where she was a Sunday School teacher for many years. She graduated from SFA & she taught school in Joaquin for several years. She along with her husband, John Henry Black owned and operated Black’s Feed Mill in Joaquin where they also raised cattle and poultry.

She is preceded in death by her Parents, Horace and Nora Neel, her Husband, John Henry Black, and Brother, Chester Neel, Brother, Everett Neel & wife, Gaye and 1Sister, Marie Bowers & husband, Giles.

Merline Sherrod, 86, of Center, passed away Friday, June 27, 2008 at her residence. She was born October 25, 1921 in Center to Burton Brittain and Lizzie Reynolds Brittain. Ms. Sherrod was a member of the Center First Assembly of God Church. She was a homemaker and mother.

Mrs. Wanda Roper, age 77, of San Augustine passed away Wednesday, June 25, 2008. Mrs. Roper was born May 14, 1931, in Dallas as a daughter of the late Ozzie Lee (Wilson) and Malcolm Carl Harrison and had been a longtime resident of San Augustine. She was a business manager with the family owned Roper Motor Company in San Augustine for 30 years. Mrs. Roper was also a member of San Augustine's First United Methodist Church and actively served with several civic organizations in San Augustine.

Survivors: her husband, Bob Roper of San Augustine; daughters, Terri Roper Wubbena and husband Jan of Siloam Springs, Arkansas, Sandi Roper Russell and husband Rick of San Augustine, and Patti Roper McLerran and husband Rod of San Augustine; brothers, Wendel C. Harrison and wife Beverly of Plano and Robert Harrison and wife Frances of Carrollton; and grandchildren, Rob Wubbena, Mary Wubbena, Ryan Russell, Bobby McLerran, and Roy McLerran.

She was preceded in death by a brother, Roland Harrison.

Funeral services are set for 10:00 a.m. Saturday, June 28, at Wyman Roberts Memorial Chapel in San Augustine with Rev. Tony McCollum, Rev Rick Russell, and Rev. Sara Barbaree officiating. Interment will follow at McGown Cemetery in Sabine County.

Visitation will be held Friday, June 27, from 5:00 to 8:00 p.m. at Wyman Roberts Funeral Home.

Mrs. Trula C. Feaster, 75, of Timpson, TX, passed away Tuesday, June 24th, 2008 at her residence. Born in Kingsport, Tennesse on June 28, 1932, she was the daughter of the late Harlan and Grace (Brown) Starnes. She was employed in the delicatessen of Brookshire Bros. in Center, Texas, and was a member of Rock Springs Cumberland Presbyterian Church in Nacogdoches County.

Survivors include husband Larry K. Feaster of Timpson; sons Lance Feaster and wife Tina of Timpson and Donald Bays and wife Toni of Biloxi, MS; daughters Martha Ferguson and husband Randy of Bellaire, KS and Nancy Coronado and husband Steve of Fullerton, CA; brother John Starnes of Oakland, OR; sister Kate Evans of Corona, CA; 5 grandchildren: Ty Feaster, Ben Ferguson, Christopher Feaster, Michael Feaster, and Caitlyn Feaster. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by son Ronald Bays, grandson Jason Bays, and 7 brothers and sisters.

H.W. "John" Mixon, age 85, of San Augustine County, Texas, passed away Sunday, June 22, 2008.

Mr. Mixon was born Nov. 14, 1922, in San Augustine County as a son of the late Millie (Rushing) and Henry Jackson Mixon. He was the retired owner of the local Arco Gas & Oil company and a cattle rancher. A longtime deacon of Calvary Baptist Church, he was a member of Broaddus Masonic Lodge #1112 and El Camino Shrine Club for over 50 years.

Survivors: his wife, Ida Bell Mixon, to whom he was married in 1945; daughter and son-in-law, Jo Karen and Elzie Smith of Broaddus; and granddaughters, Jodie Goff and husband, Joe, and Jamie Smith.

Funeral services will be held at 10:00 a.m. Wednesday, June 25, at the Wyman Roberts Memorial Chapel in San Augustine with Bro. Doug Fincher officiating. Interment will follow at Runnels Cemetery near Broaddus.

Dennis Turnipseed, 68, of Joaquin, passed away Saturday, June 21, 2008 at his home. He was born February 24, 1940 in Potts Camp, Mississippi to Walter Richard Turnipseed and Ruth Elizabeth Watson Turnipseed.

At his family’s request, Mr. Turnipseed has been cremated. A private memorial service will follow in Memphis, Tennessee at a later date.

Thomas Earl “Tom” Scruggs, 63, of Joaquin, passed away Sunday, June 15, 2008 at his home. He was born October 24, 1944 in Shelbyville to Lawrence Thomas Scruggs and Edith Marie Clark Scruggs. Mr. Scruggs retired from the Air Force, where he attained the rank of Master Sergeant, and was a member of the Air Force Sergeant’s Association. He was a member of Jackson Baptist Church in Joaquin.

Visitation will be held from 6:00 pm to 8:00 pm, Tuesday, June 17, 2008 at Watson & Sons Funeral Home in Center. Dalila Aguillon Zuniga, age 27, of San Augustine, Texas, passed away Tuesday, June 10, 2008, in San Augustine County.

Mrs. Zuniga was born Jan. 13, 1981, in San Luis Potosi, Mexico. She was a member of St. Augustine Catholic Church.

Survivors: husband, Leonel Zuniga-Pineda of San Augustine; daughters, Nancy Elizette Zuniga and Diana Elizabeth Zuniga, both of San Augustine; parents, Dalila Castro and Arturo Aguillon of Mexico; sisters, Aracely Aguillon of New York, and Graciela Aguillon and Martha Aguillon, both of Mexico; and brothers, Arturo Aguillon and Manuel Aguillon, both of Mexico.

Funeral mass will be held at 5:00 p.m. Tuesday, June 17, at St. Augustine Catholic Church in San Augustine with Father Jorge Dinguis officiating. Interment will be at a later date in Mexico.

Bess Smith passed away Saturday, June 14, 2008 in Houston, Texas at the age of 95. She was the daughter of James Homer Smith and Pearl Nix Smith of Timpson, and was born and raised there. A longtime resident of Houston, she was a retired teacher of Poe Elementary School, Houston Independent School District.

In addition to her parents, she was predeceased by a brother, James Dale Smith; a sister, Marcelle Smith Cowart, her husband Edmund and their daughter Mary; and her brother-in-law, John Benton Davis. She is survived by her brother, Robert Ray Smith and his wife Anita; her sister, Joy Smith Davis; her sister-in-law Marceil Smith; nine nieces and nephews and a host of "great" and "great-great" nieces and nephews. She loved and was devoted to her family throughout her life.

Funeral services will be held Monday, June 16 at 1:00 pm at Taylor Funeral Home in Timpson, with burial to follow at the Caledonia Cemetery. Her nephews and nieces are honored to serve as the pallbearers.


Funeral services for Louis Rhodney Stinson, 78, of Shelbyville, Texas will be held at Lydia Missionary Baptist Church at 1 PM Saturday, June 21, 2008. His remains will be interned at The National Cemetery in Arlington, Texas.

Mr. Stinson passed away peacefully on June 13, 2008 in Dallas. His children were at his side. He was born in Foreman, AR on November 29, 1929 to Merrill Louis Stinson and Georgia Irene Johnson Stinson. During his early years, they moved to Ashdown where his father ran a general store. He was a graduate of Ashdown High School where he was in the band and the drama club. He attended Ouachita Baptist College and Texarkana Jr. College. He married Betty Jo Hale in 1950. They were married for 21 years. He served in the Army after college and returned to civilian life as a salesman and he never met a stranger. He served in the Marine reserve during his civilian years. He moved to Shreveport in 1952. He served as a volunteer for the Caddo Parish Sherriff’s Reserve. He was a master at fixing anything electronic and ran a part time electronic repair shop in the evenings. He was also a semi-professional photographer. In 1971 he brought his family to Dallas for a job with Miller and Assoc. He moved to Houston in 1977. In 1981 he joined the TDC and moved to Angleton, TX. When he retired in 1991, he settled in the piney woods near Shelbyville, TX and lived the rest of his life in what he called God’s country. He was a patriot member of the American Legion and the NRA. He was a member of Lydia Missionary Baptist Church.

He is survived by his son Richard Louis Stinson and wife Angelika of The Woodlands, TX, daughter, Sheri Lynn Beach and husband Brock of Dallas, TX, and son Scott Allen Stinson and wife Julie of Pilot Point, TX. His grandchildren include Julia Stinson of Denton, TX, Hunter Beach and Taylor Beach, of Dallas, TX, Ryan Stinson of Pilot Point, TX and Taryn Stinson of Bryan, TX. cousins Aaron Fisher and family, Terry Fisher and family and Jan Bosque and family.

Memorial services for Georgia Ann Norvell, 70, of San Augustine, Texas, will be held at the San Augustine Church of Christ in San Augustine on June 13, 2008, at 2:00 p.m. Georgia departed this life peacefully in her loving husband's arms Tuesday, June 10, 2008.
She was born April 8, 1938, in El Paso, Texas, to Claude and Florence Cockrell. She was preceded in death by her father, Claude, and her brother, Patrick Cockrell, but predeceases her mother, Florence, who now resides in a nursing home in Dallas, Texas, at the age of 99.

Georgia is survived by her husband, Warren J. "Crow" Norvell; her three sons and daughters-in-law and a daughter and son-in-law. They are Lane and Carol Norvell of Tyler, J.D. and Shelly Norvell of Nacogdoches, Nickie and Steve Phillips of Huntington, and Lance and Denise Norvell of Nacogdoches. Grandchildren include Clay Phillips, Carlee Phillips, Brandon Norvell, Cassidy Phillips, Zachary Norvell, Madelyn Norvell, Weston Norvell, Andrea McNall, and Ty Tatum.

Additional survivors include sister, Claudette NcNew and husband Dan McNew of Quinlan, brother, Mike Cockrell and wife BK of Tyler, and four nieces and two nephews.

Georgia attended schools in Dallas and later graduated from Tyler High School in Tyler, Texas. She then attended Tyler Jr. College where she was a member of the Apache Belles and was named 1957 Homecoming Queen. It was at TJC that she met her husband, Warren "Crow" Norvell, who was a member of the TJC Apache football team.

She was a devoted wife, a very loving mother to her four children, and a fatithful member of the San Augustine Church of Christ. She worked for many years as a Legal Secretary for the prestigious Ramsey, Ramsey & Mitchell Law Firm owend by the late Ben Ramsey, a former Lt. Governor of Texas, as well as the Honorable Charles Smith Ramsey, and the late Honorable John Mitchell, both local patrons and respected civic leaders. Additionally, she worked for a number of years in the front office of the renowned Fairway Farm Hunt & Golf Club owned by Claxton Benedum. She also contributed much time in earlier years to the local Women's Heritage Club, Cub Scouts, Garden Club, nursing home visitation groups, and local San Augustine school related activities.

Visitation with the family will be 4:00 to 7:00 p.m. Thursday, June 12, at Wyman Roberts Funeral Home in San Augustine.

Mr. W.A. "Buddy Hann. Memorial Services for Mr. W. A. "Buddy" Hann, 83, of Sulphur, will be at a later date in Center, Texas. Cremation is entrusted to Robison Funeral Home, 107 West Napoleon St., Sulphur, La.

Mr. Hann passed away on Sunday, June 1, 2008, @ 12:15 P.M. in a Sulphur hospital after a short illness. He was a native of Drumright, Oklahoma and a longtime resident of Sulphur, La. He was a United States Air Force Veteran serving in World War II as a bombardier on a B-29, stationed in Guam. Mr. Hann graduated from Stephen F. Austin College, Nacogdoches, Texas with a B.A. in Chemistry and a minor in music. He served as a Band Director in Troup, Texas for 3 years before going to work in Lake Charles for PPG. He was a member of Maplewood United Methodist Church where he formerly served as Choir Director for 6 years, served as a Sunday School Teacher and was a member of the Board of Directors. Mr. Hann retired from PPG as a Chemist after 34 years of service. After retirement, Buddy devoted his time to being a great Chef at home and enjoying reading a large collection of novels.
