Mary Belle Brice, 83, passed away Sunday, November 29, 2009, at a Nacogdoches nursing home. She was born January 10, 1926 in Ada, Oklahoma to Ralph and Pearl Whiteside.

Graveside services will be held at 12:00 p.m., Thursday, December 3, 2009 at Oaklawn Memorial Park in Center, with Rev. Carl Smith officiating.

She is survived by:

Velma Oates, 92, passed away November 29, 2009, at her home in Center. She was born June 27, 1917 to William Major Watley and Maggie Murphy Watley in Liberty County. She was their only child. She married Roy Oates in 1934. They moved to Shelby County in 1940 to make their home near his family. She was a member of the First Baptist Church in Center.

Visitation will be held from 10:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m., Wednesday, December 2, 2009 at Watson & Sons Funeral Home in Center. Graveside Services will be held at 3:00, Wednesday, December 2, 2009 at Oaklawn Memorial Park in Center, with Rev. Carl Smith officiating.

Memorial services for Mr. Paul Samford, age 88, of Carthage, Texas, will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Saturday, December 5, 2009, at Jimerson-Lipsey Funeral Home Chapel with Rev. Paul Thomasson officiating. Interment will follow at a later date in the V.A. Cemetery in San Antonio. Mr. Samford passed away on Sunday, November 15, 2009, in Pensacola, Florida.

Paul Samford was born on November 27, 1920, in Tenaha, Texas, to William and Euna Samford. Mr. Samford served his country in the United States Air Force attaining the rank of CMSgt before retiring in 1970, after 29 years of service. He was a member of the Carthage Masonic Lodge #521. Mr. Samford was a member of the First United Methodist Church in Carthage. He was preceded in death by his parents; a twin sister, Pauline Needham; and two brothers, Van and Harry Samford.

Mr. Samford is survived by two daughters, Paula Laritz of Pensacola and Debra Duke and husband J.E. of Carthage; one brother, Archie Morris Samford of Carthage; three grandchildren, Frankie Laritz of Pensacola, Angel Chapin of Roswell, New Mexico, and Dorothy Kozakowski of Chicago. Numerous nieces and nephews also survive Mr. Samford.

Joe Jim Baldwin, 84 of Huxley, passed away Friday, November 27, 2009 in Nacogdoches. He was born December 27, 1924 in Panola County, Texas to Jep Baldwin and Bennie Harvilla Graves Baldwin. Mr. Baldwin served in the United States Army during the World War II and the Korean conflict.

Visitation will be held from 6-8 PM, Tuesday, December 1, 2009 at Watson and Sons Funeral Home in Center. Funeral services for Frank Leonard Summers, 90, of Timpson, TX, will be at 2:00 PM, Monday, November 30, 2009, in Taylor Funeral Home Chapel, Timpson, with Bro. Nolan Ritchie and Bro. Cliff Hughes officiating. Interment will follow in Woodlawn Heights Cemetery, Mt. Enterprise, TX. Rev. Summers passed away November 26, 2009, in Garrison Nursing Home, Garrison, TX.

Born July 4, 1919 in Hamburg, AR, Frank Summers was the son of the late Earl Willis and Blanche (McMillian) Summers. On December 24, 1938, he and Helen Blanche Moore were married in Mist, AR. They were rice farmers and ranchers in Arkansas until 1955. In August of 1955 they moved to Henderson, TX, to attend Texas Baptist Institute and Seminary where Rev. Summers received the Doctor of Theology degree. He retired as an American Baptist Association minister after 54 years of serving 6 churches in the East Texas area and one church in Pasadena, TX.

Survivors include his wife Helen Blanche Summers of Timpson; 2 sons: Jerry Summers and wife Cindy of Timpson and Dale Summers and wife Cass of Henderson, TX; 2 sisters: Earlene and Leone; daughter-in-law Joyce Summers of LaPorte, TX; sister-in-law Cora Mae Summers of Crossett, AR; 11 grandchildren; 13 great grandchildren; and numerous relatives and many friends.

In addition to his parents, Frank Summers was preceded in death by son Earl Eugene Summers, brother Maurice Summers, and sister Edith Thomas.

Miss Robin Lynn Miller, age 53, of Martinsville, Texas, passed away Friday, Nov. 27, 2009.

Miss Miller was born Feb. 4, 1956, in Texas City, Texas, as a daughter of the late Ingrid (Elledge) and Lloyd Miller and had moved to the East Texas area a few years ago. She was a graduate of Texas A&M University receiving a bachelor's degree in biochemstry.

Survivors: a sister, Nannette Abernathy of Martinsville; and a nephew, Shannon Abernathy of Tyler.

Graveside rites are set for 11:30 a.m. Tuesday, Dec. 1, at Martinsvlle Cemetery on FM 95.

Emma Lurette Ramsey Mitchell died peacefully Wednesday afternoon, November 25, 2009. She was born in San Augustine, Texas on January 30, 1911, the middle of nine children of Judge W. C. and Emma Jenkins Ramsey. After graduating from San Augustine High School in 1927, she received her Bachelor's Degree from Mary Hardin-Baylor College and Master's Degree from Stephen F. Austin State Teachers College. She began her teaching career at the Harmony School in the Greer School District in San Augustine County in 1932. From there she taught at Chinquapin and then at San Augustine Elementary where she lovingly taught many generations of second graders.

She is preceded in death by her husband, L.B. (Rudy) Mitchell; son, Judge John W. Mitchell; brothers, William, Thomas, Smith, Ben, and George Ramsey, and sisters, Addie Laura Ramsey, Mary Belle Ramsey Ledford and Letitia Ramsey Stine.

She is survived by son and daughter-in-law, Charles and Barbara Mitchell, daughter-in-law, Lucy Mitchell; and grandchildren, Sarah Jane (Janie) Mitchell, John Joseph (Jody) Mitchell and wife Sarah, and Emma Virginia (Ginny) Mitchell.

Visitation will be held from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m., Friday, November 27, 2009 at Wyman Roberts Funeral Home with funeral service Saturday, November 28, 2009 at 2:00 p.m. at Christ Church Episcopal, San Augustine, The Reverend Dorothy Gremillion officiating.

Maurine Annette Hayden Smith, 87, of Center, passed away November 21, 2009 of causes incident to age.

Graveside services will be 2:00 p.m. Monday, November 23, 2009 at Cedar Yard Cemetery with Bishop Neilson officiating. Visitation will Monday, November 23, 2009 starting at 1:00 p.m. until service time.

Maurine was born June 23, 1922, the oldest living child of Irene Gunter Hayden and Wiley Bryan Hayden. She was born in the house that her father built on the old Tenaha highway in what used to be called the Flat Fork Community, Shelby County Texas. Maurine went to school at Cedar Yard and graduated in 1940 as class salutatorian from Center High School. During WWII Maurine met and married Albert Benjamin Smith on November 18, 1943. After the war Maurine and Ben made their home near Logan, Utah where Ben finished his education and later taught as Professor of Engineering at Utah State University. A family of five children was raised in the gospel of Jesus Christ. Upon retirement Maurine and Ben moved back into the old house near Tenaha, Texas where later a new house was built.

Maurine was preceded in death by her husband A. Benjamin Smith, and her two younger brothers, John R. Hayden and Bill G. Hayden.

Surviving are her children, Gerald H. Smith & wife Sandra of Tremonton, Utah; Carolyn S. Tibbetts & husband Rod of Moab, Utah; Melanie S. Liechty & husband Mike of Logan, Utah; Hayden B. Ronald Gene Baldwin, 62, of Center, passed away Friday, November 20, 2009 in Center. He was born February 3, 1947 in Decatur, Illinois to Jasper Baldwin and Doris Donnan Baldwin. Mr. Baldwin was a devoted husband for forty-four years, a loving father and grandfather.

Per his request, Mr. Baldwin will be cremated with a private memorial service to be held at a later date.

Mr. Roy Ferrell Russell, age 68 of Center passed away Wednesday, November 18, 2009 as a result of an automobile accident.

Services will be 10:00 am Saturday, November 21, 2009 at First Baptist Church Center, Texas with L.D. Eddins officiating and Eulogy by his Brother-in-law, Viggo Ulrich. Burial will follow at Mt. Pleasant Cemetery in Center.

Visitation will be Friday evening from 5pm until 7 pm at Mangum Funeral Home.

Mr. Russell was born October 15, 1941 in Nacogdoches, Texas to the late Roy & Ada Mae (Covington) Russell.

He dearly loved his grandchildren and his family. He also enjoyed playing tennis, teaching and tutoring. He was currently employed at Center I.S.D. where he taught Math.

Dan Moody, 78, of Center, passed away Thursday, November 12, 2009 in Carthage. He was born December 13, 1930 in Shelby County to Elton Milford Moody and Eldora Peacock Moody. He was an avid lifelong fox hunter and a well known BBQ connoisseur for a number of years. Mr. Moody was a member of Antioch Baptist Church in Center.

Judy Bridges Rushing, 71, of Center, passed away Wednesday, November 11, 2009 at a Tyler hospital. She was born September 18, 1938 in Dallas to Lawrence Payne Bridges and Gladys Doggett Bridges. Born October 09, 1948, in Leesville, LA, Troy Johnson was the son of the late Alvi H. and Lillie Mae Johnson. He and Colleen Real were married December 18, 1969, in Beaumont, TX. He attended Timpson United Penecostal Church.

Funeral services for Flossie Mae Laney, 81, Troup, will be at 10:00 a.m. Friday, November 6 at the First Assembly of God Church, Troup with Reverend Wes Bynum and Reverend Tracy Wright officiating. Burial will be in the Bradford Cemetery, Troup under direction of Cottle Funeral Home, Troup.
Mrs. Laney died Tuesday, November 3, 2009 in Whitehouse. She was born March 15, 1928 in Jacksonville to the late Edward and Ethal Donahue Stover. She married Murl R. Laney February 8, 1947 in Jacksonville. She moved to Troup in 1956 from Jacksonville and was a homemaker and a member of the First Assembly of God Church, Troup.

She was a dedicated housewife, mother and child of God. She was a devoted friend to all.

Besides her parents, she was preceded in death by a brother, George Stover, a son, John Edward “Eddie” Laney and a great granddaughter, Lynae.

Survivors include her husband of 62 years, Murl Laney of Troup; five sons and daughters-in-law, Jimmy and Janet Laney of Arp, Bobby and Susan Laney of Mixon, Paul and Lori Laney of Jacksonville, Jerry Laney of Troup and Terry Laney of Troup; a daughter and son-in-law, Jana and George Tarver of Troup; a brother, Ervil Stover of Jacksonville; five sisters, Gracie House, Frankston, Della Plaunty of Silsbee, Bernice Lovelady of Jacksonville, Reba Berry of Whitehouse and Ethal Lewis of Jacksonville; sixteen grandchildren, eighteen great grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews.

She was also a lifetime member of the Order of the Eastern Star, Chapter #903, and sang with the Gospel Aires Quartet for many years.

Burton R. Garmany, age 75, of Houston, passed away Sunday, November 1, 2009 at his home. He was born May 13, 1934 in Logansport, Louisiana to Ernest L. Garmany and Cecile Brown Garmany. He retired from Gulf Oil Company where he worked as Comptroller of Korea Gulf. For the last ten years, Mr. Garmany taught in the accounting department of San Jacinto College. He was a member of the First Methodist Church in Logansport, Louisiana.

David Blair DeTar, 80, of Shelbyville, Texas, passed away Monday, November 2, 2009.

Services will be 6:15 p.m. Wednesday, November 4, 2009 at the First Christian Church in Center with Bro. Aubie McSwain officiating. Visitation will be Wednesday November 4, 2009 from 5:30 p.m. until service time at the First Christian Church under the direction of Mangum Funeral Home.

Graveside Services will be 11:30 a.m. Saturday November 7, 2009 at Lorton Cemetery in Cowden, IL. Viewing in Illinois will begin at 11:00 a.m. at Lorton Cemetery under the direction of Lockhart Funeral Home, Shelbyville, IL.

Mr. DeTar was born July 16, 1929 in Bristol, Oklahoma, the second child of Harold and Ruth (Crawford) DeTar. David and his wife, Wanda (Turner) DeTar enjoyed their combined families and many years of travel. David’s early years were spent in Winslow and Griffin, Indiana. He graduated from Griffin High School in Griffin, Indiana in 1949. He worked from 39 years on the railroad for Illinois Central, Amtrack and Southern Pacific. He retired from Southern Pacific. He was an active member of the Boy Scouts all of his life. He was member of the First Christian Church, Center, Texas where he served as a deacon.

He is preceded in death by his Parents, Harold and Ruth (Crawford) DeTar and Brother, George DeTar.
