Thomas Ray Oates, age 75 of San Augustine, formerly of California, passed away Saturday, Oct. 31, 2009 at Twin Lakes Care Center in San Augustine.

His body will be cremated and no services are planned at this time.

He was born May 31, 1934 in Palo Alto, CA to parents, Thomas Virgil & Maudie H. (Whitehead) Oates. He worked in maintenance for American Airlines for a number of years.

Lurline Emanis, 81 of Center, passed away Friday, October 30, 2009 at Shelby Regional Medical Center.

Service will be 10:00 a.m. Monday, November 2, 2009 at Mangum Funeral Home Chapel with Bro. Jimmy Carroll officiating. Burial will follow at Mt. Herman Cemetery. Visitation will be Sunday, November 1, 2009 from 5:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. at Mangum Funeral Home.

She was born September 8, 1928 to Ashvath and Lena (Hendricks) Samford. She was the Bakery Manager at U-Save for many years.

She is preceded in death by her Parents, Ashvath and Lena Samford, Husband, Adron Emanis, 2 Sons, Gary Bruce Emanis and Tommy Gene Emanis, and Grandson, Wesley Weems.

Eddie Lamar Williford, 58, of Nacogdoches, Texas passed away Tuesday, October 27, 2009, in Nacogdoches. Eddie was born May 21, 1951, in Center, Texas, the son of the late Chester P. Williford and Angie L. Davis Jones.

The family will hold a memorial service at a later date. Friends are invited to attend visitation with Eddie's family from 5 until 8 p.m. Thursday, October 29. 2009, at Laird Funeral Home.

Eddie grew up in Center, Texas, and graduated from Center High School. He joined the service in 1969 and served his country in the U.S. Army in Europe and retired in 1976. Eddie was passionate about reading and political concerns. He loved his family, especially his nieces and nephews.

Eddie is survived by a sister, Sue Evans and husband, Calvin, of Nacogdoches; a brother, Curtis P. Williford and wife, Sue of Bastrop; nephews, Nicholas Shoalmire and wife, Mary, of Converse, La., Wade Williford and wife, Tamara, of Humble, Texas, and Aaron Williford of Bastrop, Texas; niece, LeeAnna Farmer and husband, Corey, of Huntington, Texas; great-nephews, Dylan Shoalmire, Zach Farmer, Kyle Consford and Steven Farmer; and great-nieces, Kaley Consford, Robyn Shoalmire, Hannah Williford and Randi Mae Shoalmire.

Eddie was preceded in death by his parents and one niece, Angela Robin Shoalmire.

The family requests that memorial donations be made to the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation, 2425 Fountainview, Ste. 280, Houston, Texas 77057.

Jack Dempsey Alford, 76, of Center, passed away Tuesday, October 27, 2009 at his home. He was born October 7, 1933 in Center to Pierce Jones and Lucille Belrose Jernigan Jones. Mr. Alford served in the US Army and was of the Baptist faith.

Elder Lee Collum, 95, of Shelbyville, passed away Tuesday, October 27, 2009 at his residence.

Service will be 2:00 p.m. Friday, October 30, 2009 at Mangum Funeral Home Chapel with his grandsons, Jerry Lee Collum, Jeffrey Collum and Jon Collum officiating. He was born August 6, 1914 to James Willis and Martha (Wilburn) Collum. He was a minister and a member of New Harmony Missionary Baptist Church.

Bernice H. Ramsey, 83, of Lufkin, services will be held Wednesday, October 28, 2009 at 10 AM, in the Carroway-Claybar Funeral Home Chapel with Dr. Andy Pittman and Reverend Aubrey Knox officiating. Graveside services will be held at 3 PM, in the Forest Park West Cemetery in Houston.

Mrs. Ramsey was born July 6, 1926 in Timpson, Texas to the late Jewel (Crump) and Vause Hughes, and died Sunday, October 25, 2009 at her residence.

A former resident of Houston, Mrs. Ramsey had resideded in Lufkin for 10 years. She retired from Brelsford Insurance Agency in Houston following 17 years of service. Mrs. Ramsey was a member of the Memorial Drive United Methodist Church in Houston and attended Lufkin's First Baptist Church.

Survivors include her sons and daughters-in-law, Michael and Cindy Ramsey of Lufkin and Robert and Nancy Ramsey of Houston; grandchildren, Michelle Ramsey, Rachel Ramsey, Meredith Earnest, Blake Ramsey and Wayne Ramsey; great grandchildren, Jake Earnest and Olivia Earnest; brother and sister-in-law, Bob and Sandra Hughes of Center of Center; and nephew, Lance Hughes of Center.

In addition to her parents, Mrs. Ramsey was preceded in death by her husband, Edward Ramsey; son, Steven Ramsey; and brother Weldon Hughes.

Virginia McDonald, 76, of Shelbyville, passed away Sunday, October 25, 2009 at a Shreveport hospital. She was born February 24, 1933 in Shelbyville to O.L. Parker, Jr. and Lois Wilburn Parker.

Mrs. McDonald was a member of the West Hamilton Missionary Baptist Church. She had retired from Farmers State Bank after 30 years, and was most recently working as a licensed real estate agent for Tammy Steptoe Realty.

Visitation will be held from 5:00 pm to 8:00 pm, Tuesday, October 27, 2009 at Watson & Sons Funeral Home in Center. Funeral services will be held at 11:00 am, Wednesday, October 28, 2009 at Watson & Sons Chapel with Bro. B. A. Morris and Bro. Pat Windham officiating. Interment will follow at West Hamilton Cemetery in Shelbyville.

Danny was born September 30, 1945 in Waynesville, North Carolina, and was the son of the late Jack D. Fulbright and the late Willie Clark Fulbright Perz. Danny grew up in Cruso, North Carolina, where he met his wife of 40 years, Bunita Trull Fulbright.

Funeral services for Patricia Ann Lewis Gibbs, 67, of Carthage will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday, October 24, 2009 at Hawthorn Funeral Home Chapel. Bro. Buddy Hall will officiate. Interment will follow in Tennessee Cemetery in Shelby County. Services are under the direction of Hawthorn Funeral Home. She died October 20, 2009 at her home in Carthage.

Mrs. Patricia Ann Lewis Gibbs was born August 9, 1942 in Houston. She was one of three children born to the marriage of Amos and Georgia Irene Turney Lewis. Pat was raised in Houston graduating from Smiley High School with the class of 1959. She married Billy Joe Gibbs and together they celebrated over 50 years of marriage. Mrs. Gibbs worked as a hairdresser in her younger years and devoted to rest of her life to her family as a homemaker. She is preceded in death by her parents; stepson, Jeffry Lynn Gibbs, and two grandchildren, Johnathan A. Gibbs and Joseph Warren Cannon.

She is survived by her devoted husband, Billy Joe Gibbs, Sr., of Carthage; son, Billy Joe Gibbs, Jr. and wife, Sandy, of New Caney; daughter, Lynnette Darlene Gibbs Cannon and husband, Otis Ray, of Dallas; brothers, Henry Russell Lewis, of Missouri and Amos “Jr.: Lewis, of Peoria, Illinois; grandchildren, Aaron Ray Cannon and wife, Dana, of N. Martha S. Ward, 81, of Vidor died Sunday, October 18, 2009 at her residence. A lifelong resident of Vidor, she was a retired custodian with VISD. She was a member of the VFW Ladies Auxillary post # 8246, and the Order of the Eastern Star Chapter #910 of Vidor.

Funeral services will be held at 10:00 a.m. on Wednesday, October 21, 2009 at Memorial Funeral Home of Vidor, with burial to follow at Restlawn Memorial Park in Vidor. Visitation will begin at 6:00 p.m. on Tuesday, October 20, 2009 at Memorial Funeral Home.

Dorothy Lee Samford, age 89, of Center, passed away Sunday, October 18, 2009 at Green Acres Convalescent Center in Center. She was born May 17, 1920 in Shelby County to N. W. Lee and Kate Strickland Lee. Ms. Samford was a member of the First United Methodist Church in Center and a member of Lucretia Bussey’s Sunday School class.

Visitation will be held from 6:00 pm to 8:00 pm, Monday, October, 19, 2009 at Watson & Sons Funeral Home. Graveside services will be held at 2:00 pm, Tuesday, October 20, 2009 at Oaklawn Memorial Park with Rev. Greg Megill officiating.

Mrs. Lois (Lilly) Powers, 103, of Garrison, TX, formerly of Timpson, funeral services will be at 2:00 PM, Monday, October 19, 2009, in Good Hope Baptist Church, Timpson, with Rev. Elmer Mathews officiating. Interment will follow in Blair Cemetery. Mrs. Powers passed away October 16, 2009, in Garrison, TX.

Born October 10, 1906, in Appleby, TX, Lois Powers was the daughter of the late Ellis Holloway and Dollie (Campbell) Lilly. She married Claude Powers, who preceded her in death September 15, 1978. She was a homemaker and member of Good Hope Baptist Church. She was active in the WMA of Good Hope Baptist Church and a faithful member of the ladies’ quilting organization.

Survivors include daughter Claudine Peavy of Nacogdoches, TX; 2 granddaughters: Gayle Muckleroy and husband Gary of Nacogdoches and Debbie Clark of League City, TX; 6 great grandchildren: Kent Birdwell, Kelly Griffey, Steve Clark, James Clark, Nathan Clark, Natalee Clark, and 12 great great grandchildren. Also surviving is her sister Naomi Hendricks of Timpson, TX.

In addition to her parents and husband Claude, Lois Powers was preceded in death by 3 brothers and 3 sisters.

Omer Earl “Pop” Stanford, age 81, of Center, passed away Friday, October 16, 2009 at his home. He was born February 5, 1928 in Geneva, Texas to George H. Stanford and Maggie Gertrude Cochran Stanford. Mr. Stanford was a retired Houston firefighter.

Jean Edwin Null passed away on October 15, 2009 in Houston, Texas.

Graveside Service will be 2:00 p.m. Sunday, October 18, 2009 at Powdrill Cemetery in Center with Bro. Michael Hale officiating. Visitation will be Saturday, October 17, 2009 from 5:00 p.m. until 9:00 p.m. at Mangum Funeral Home.

He was born in Houston on November 13, 1928 just before the great depression. As a young man Jean entered the United States Air Force and served his country during the Korean War. After he was discharged he enrolled in the University of Houston and began his studies in engineering. In late 1952 Jean met Merlene Fults - the love of his life - and they were married on June 5, 1953. Jean and Merlene were married for 33 years until her death in 1987. They had 5 daughters, 10 grandchildren, and 4 great-grandchildren. During their marriage they traveled with their children and did extensive missionary work in Guatemala as well as Mexico for many years. Even though we miss him as he has passed on to his reward in Heaven, Jean will be reunited with his loved ones that have gone before him.

He is preceded in death by his Father, Henry Null; his mother, Lorena Wainwright Null; his sister Norma Pearson Turner; and his beloved wife Merlene Fults Null as well as many other dear relatives.

Zeagler A. Melton, 89, of Center, passed away Thursday, October 15, 2009 at his home. He was born January 10, 1920 in Lufkin to Daniel Webster Melton and Delaney Bradshaw Melton.

Steve Hughes, 58, of Joaquin, passed away Sunday, October 11, 2009 at a Shreveport hospital. He was born September 25, 1951 in Orange to Frank Hughes and Betty Crump Hughes. Mr. Hughes has been the mayor of Joaquin for many years. He was of the Baptist faith.

Lt. Col. Carlos Lee Fox, Sr., USAF Retired, 86, of Center, passed away Saturday, October 10, 2009 at his home surrounded by family and friends. He was born February 20, 1923 in Bowling Green, Kentucky to Carl James Fox and Lucille Lee Miller Fox. Col. Fox was retired from the U.S. Air Force, having served during WWII, the Korean Conflict and Vietnam. He was a member of the Rotary Club, VFW Post #8904 and First United Methodist Church of Center.

Col. Fox began his military career in the Army air Corps with pilot training on the biplane and ended with the Space Shuttle Progam (1951-1974). His many awards and his achievements included:

• Chief, Air Force Operations, Space Shuttle Program, Kennedy Space Center, FL
• Director of Civil Engineering for the development of Manned Orbiting Laboratory (Space Shuttle Program)
• Member of Site Selection Committee for NASA Space Shuttle Program
• Air Force Regional Civil Engineer – Ubon, Thailand
• Chief Project Engineer for the Titan Launch Facilities – Cape Canaveral Air Force Station, FL & Vandenberg Air Force Base, CA
• Military Liaison to the King of Denmark, Sondrestrom Air Base, Greenland
• Veteran of WWII, Korea, & Vietnam
• Retired as a Lieutenant Colonel from the United States Air Force
• President of the Society of Military Engineers
• Pilot of numerous aircraft including the Grumman HU-16 Albatross
• Record Holder for the longest over-water search & rescue mission

Through his career, Col. Fox received numerous medals including American Campaign Medal, Air Force Commendation Medal with 4 Oak Leaf Clusters, Air Force Longevity Service Award with 5 Oak Leaf Clusters, Air Force Outstanding Unit Award with 4 Oak Leaf Clusters, Armed Forces Reserve Expeditionary Service Award, European-Africa-Middle Eastern Campaign Medal, National Defense Service Medal with 1 Oak Leaf Cluster, Republic of Vietnam Campaign Medal, Vietnam Service Medal and the WW II Victory Medal.

During his retirement, Col. Fox enjoyed being an active member of the community. He was honored by the Rotary Club as a Paul Harris Fellow for his services in the community, including developing the “Fun for Funds” Scholarship fundraiser. In lieu of flowers, the family has requested that donations be made in Col. Fox’s honor to the Catherine Pinkston Scholarship Fund or the First United Methodist Church.

Tommie Itasca Steward, 105, of Center, passed away Thursday, October 8, 2009 at Holiday Nursing Center. She was born February 18, 1904 in Josephine, Texas to James Thornton Henson and Sally Ann Harper Henson.

Funeral services for Mr. Arvel Pate, 88, of Timpson, Texas, will be held at 10:00am Friday, October 9, 2009, in First Baptist Church , Timpson, with Rev. Josh Walters officiating. Interment will follow in Pleasant Grove Cemetery, Timpson. Mr. Pate passed away Tuesday, October 6, 2009, at Green Acres of Center, Center, Texas.

Born December 3, 1920, in Center, Texas, he was the son of the late Willie and Ida (Powdrill) Pate. He served in the U.S. Army during WWII. He was awarded numerous combat medals for his service in Normandy, France and Germany, and was a POW during the European campaign. On December 20, 1941, he married Dorothy Hendrick in Center, Texas. Mr. Pate retired as a machinist with Hallmark of Center and was also a member of Pleasant Grove Missionary Baptist Church.

Survivors include his wife Dorothy Hendrick Pate of Timpson.

Sons: David Pate and wife Debra; Danny Pate and wife Sue; Timmy Pate and wife Cheryl; and Jeff Pate and wife Cynthia, all of Timpson.

Daughters: Arlene Horton and husband Hal of Timpson; Susan Naron and husband Joe of Nacogdoches; Elaine Parker of Nacogdoches and Pam Fausett and husband Jimbo of Timpson.

Brother: Dalton Pate of Timpson.

Sisters: LaVerne Pope of Wimberly, Texas; LaMerle Cockerham of Humble, Texas and Orine Ingram of Pasadena, Texas.
