Ruth Fenley, 76, of Center, passed away Thursday, December 30, 2010 at Nacogdoches Memorial Hospital.

Services will be 1:00 p.m. Monday, January 3, 2011 at Mangum Funeral Home Chapel with Bro. Charles Williams and Bro. Jerry Lewis officiating. Burial will follow at Mt. Herman Cemetery. Visitation will be Saturday, January 1, 2011 from 11:00 a.m. until 8:00 p.m. at Mangum Funeral Home.

She was born May 2, 1934 in Center to Noah and Sallie (Stewart) Lucas. She was a member of Old Salem Missionary Baptist.

Reece Thomas Smith, 97, died in his home near Milam, TX, after an illness. Mr. Smith was born in Time, TX. to June and Vessie Brittain Smith. He retired from Graver Tank and Oil and was a farmer/rancher all his life. Mr. Smith was a member of the Pendleton Assembly of God in Pendleton, LA.

He is survived by three sons; Millard Smith and his wife Johnnie of Milam, Lamar Smith and his wife Ruth of Patroon, Tommy Smith and his wife Juanita of Sam Rayburn, TX, two daughters; Janice Hughes of Center and Brenda Elliott of Lufkin, his sister Zelma Blasingame of Garland, TX, one son-in-law Morris Shofner of Houston, thirteen grand children, thirty-one great grandchildren and four great great grandchildren.

Visitation will be from 4:00 pm until 8:00 pm, Friday, Dec. 31, 2010, in the Starr Funeral Home, 510 Starr St., Hemphill, TX. Funeral services will be at 1:00 pm, Saturday, Jan. 1, 2011, in the Starr Funeral Home Chapel. Burial will follow in the Liberty Springs Cemetery near Milam.

Jereldine Fry, age 71, of Bryant, Arkansas, passed away Monday, December 27, 2010, at the Saline Memorial Hospital.  She was born on February 19, 1939, to her late parents, Waymon Alexander and Vivian Gann Alexander of Shelbyville, TX.  Jereldine was a member of the First United Methodist Church of Wickes, Arkansas.  In addition, she was an outstanding cook, loved gardening and was a very caring person.

She is survived by five sons:

Arnold Felix Kaluza, Jr., passed away Sunday, December 26, 2010, in Tyler, TX. Born February 26, 1948, in Galveston, TX, he was the son of Helen C. Kaluza and the late Arnold F. Kaluza, Sr. After graduating from Timpson High School in 1966, he graduated from Panola College and attended Texas Tech University. He installed elevators and was a member of Local 31 Elevator Worker’s Union.

Survivors include his wife Angela Kaluza of Cleveland, TX; mother Helen C. Kaluza of Timpson; son Nathan Kaluza, wife Lynn, and children Bethany and Emma of Timpson; son Arnold Kaluza, III, wife Heather, and children Alison and William of Hendersonville, TN; sister Joanne Cooper and husband Dick of Tatum; and numerous other grandchildren, nieces, and relatives. In addition to his father, Arnold was preceded in death by his sister Jeanette Kaluza.

Memorial service for Iva Nell (Johnson) Cordero, 62, of Longview, TX, will be held at 2:00 PM, Monday, December 27, 2010, at Taylor Funeral Home Chapel, Timpson, TX, with Rev. Carroll Jones officiating. Ms. Cordero passed away December 23, 2010, in Longview, TX.

Born May 6, 1948, in Timpson, TX, Iva Nell Cordero was the daughter of the late Clem Lavoy and Bobbie Lee (Woods) Johnson. She loved her family, painting, and animals, especially her puppies that she called her “babies” – Tine-Tine, Kori, and Sissy.

Survivors include her brother Jimmy Ray Johnson of Beckville, TX; sister Betsy Hightower of Longview; special nephews Berdette Wayne Hightower and Jerry Lamar Hightower; a cousin who was like a sister to her Jean Johnson and husband Leland; and numerous nieces, nephews, and other relatives. In addition to her parents, Iva Nell Cordero was preceded in death by her brother Rodney Lamar Johnson and nephew Brian Keith Hightower.

Houston Gunter, 91, passed away Wednesday, December 22, 2010 at his home in Hope Arkansas. Mr. Gunter was a long time resident of Shelby County, and was the owner of the Patroon Sawmill in the 1950’s and early 60’s. He was preceded in death by his wife, Marie Gunter.

Houston Gunter is survived by two sons: Jim Gunter (Judie) and Mark Gunter, both of Hope Arkansas and two daughters: Janet Gibson(Kirk) of Dade City Florida and Elaine Warrington (Dick) of Hot Springs Village, Arkansas. Also a daughter-in-law, Ruth Gunter of Tyler

He is also survived by grandchildren: Christie Adams, Craig Gunter, Tim Gibson, Wendi Zebell, Lee Warrington, and Eric Warrington, as well as 10 great-grandchildren.

Services for Houston Gunter will be held Sunday, December 26, 2010 at 2 o’clock at the Brazzel/Oakcrest Funeral Home in Hope Arkansas.

Born February 17, 1929, in Sabinetown, Texas, Betty Jean Youngblood Prince was the daughter of Hamp and Hattie (Taylor) Youngblood. Betty loved outdoors and nature as she grew up in Sabinetown. She enjoyed sewing, gardening, and cooking. She loved her family and was devoted to her friends and church. She was a member of Heritage Missionary Baptist Church in Center.

Survivors include her son Kenneth Prince and wife Renee of Timpson; daughter Cindy Ramsey and husband Mike of Lufkin; sisters Evelyn Rhame of Florien, LA, Helen Ward of Merryville, LA, Deltha Ann Hopkins of Florien, LA, and Martha Mae Youngblood of Merryville; brother Douglas P. Youngblood of Sabinetown; grandchildren: Michelle Ramsey King, Wayne Edward Ramsey, Derrick Prince, Dakota Barr, Shasta Wiley, Nathan Barr, and Blake Prince. In addition to her parents, Betty Prince was preceded in death by her brother Lewis Youngblood and her husband Edward Prince in 1985.

Mr. William Scott Jordan, 60, of San Augustine, passed from this life on Wednesday, December 22, 2010, in Nacogdoches, Texas, after an extended illness.

Scott was born to Helen (Wesley) Jordan, and William Garner Jordan on March 24, 1950, in Austin, Texas. He worked for the Broaddus Independent School District, and served as a Missionary for several years. He was a Eagle Scout and a member of the First Baptist Church in Broaddus, Texas.

Memorial Services will be held on Sunday, December 26, 2010, at 2 p.m. in the First Baptist Church, Broaddus, Texas. Dr. Wayne Barth will officiate. Cremation was chosen by the family.

Mr. Ben Stagner, 75, of Broaddus, passed away late Monday evening, December 20, 2010, in Houston, Texas.

Ben was born to Mary Murray (Stagner) and Ellis Emmitt Stagner on September 24, 1935, in Pineland, Texas. He served in the U.S. Army, and was employed in sales - piping, valves fittings, for R.V. Trailer Sales.

Billy Lee Wescoat, 76, of Center, passed away Monday, December 20, 2010 at Oak Manor Nursing Home in Nacogdoches. He was born June 3, 1934 in Tuscola, Michigan to Floyd Wescoat and Addie Saxton Wescoat. He served in the U.S. Marine Corps during the Korean conflict, and was a member of the VFW Post #8904.

Mrs. Joanna Johnson, 75, of Chireno, passed from this life late Friday evening, December 17, 2010, at Nacogdoches Memorial Hospital in Nacogdoches.

Joanna was born September 6, 1935, in Camp Ruby, Texas, to Cecil (Neal) Havard and Boley Havard. She had retired from Armco Steele; her late husband, along with her, were longtime residents of the the Chireno, Texas area; together they had owned the Acorn Lumber Company, located off 1751, in San Augustine County, Texas, and she was City Manager for the City of Chireno, Texas for a number of years. She was a member of the First Baptist Church in Chireno.

Graveside Services will be held on Monday, December 20, 2010, at 2:00 p.m. in the Fielders Cemetery in Hungtington, Texas. Visitation will be from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. at Wyman Roberts Funeral Home, 316 West Columbia Street, San Augustine, Texas 75972.

William G. (Billy) Spears, 90, of Joaquin, TX was transported by the angels to his heavenly home on December 18, 2010. Mr. Spears was born February 29, 1920 in DeSoto Parish, LA to William Henry and Cora Ophelia Armstrong Spears.

He was preceded in death by his parents and sister Doris Wana Spears Ray.

Mr. Spears proudly served his country in the US Army during WWII. He retired after 30 years with Texaco. He enjoyed gardening, fishing, hunting and most of all spending time with his family. He spent most of his life serving the Lord in church as a deacon, church secretary-treasurer, and Sunday School Teacher. Although he was a very quiet man, his gentle, kind spirit touched the hearts of many people.

He is survived by his wife of 64 years, Dorothy Faye Wilburn Spears; two sons Jarrel Wayne Spears and wife Carla of Joaquin, TX, Ronald Gordon Spears and wife Georgia of Houston TX; one daughter Wanda Kay (Kayse) Spears Carroll and husband David of Joaquin, TX; Four grandchildren, Dea Valerie Spears Henry and husband Kerry of Henderson, TX; Ali Christian Spears Chandler and husband Jason of Bossier City, LA; Summer Lindsey Spears Lindsay and husband Chad of Houston, TX; and Shelby Taylor Spears of Houston, TX. Born August 27, 1948, in Wurzburg, Germany, Jim Whiteside was the son of the late James “Red” Edward Whiteside, Sr. and Clovis Hulon Sanders Whiteside. He was a graduate of Timpson High School and attended Panola College and Texas A & M University before graduating from Stephen F. Austin State University. Jim married Brenda Rogers of Timpson on December 21, 1968, and she survives him. He and his father were co-owners of Whiteside Chevrolet in Timpson, and later he was owner of JBM Transportation. Jim was also a member of First Christian Church, Timpson.

Survivors include his wife Brenda Rogers Whiteside of Timpson; son Matt Whiteside of Nacogdoches; and mother-in-law Mary Eva Rogers of Timpson.

Mr. Weyman Vonciel Hall, 65 years old sadly left our presence and entered into the presence of the Lord, on Saturday, December 11, 2010. He was a transplanted resident of San Augustine. However, he was born and raised in Texas City. He was a son of the late Walter Vonciel Hall and Vickie Idell-Crowson Hall. He had 2 siblings, Weldon Hall of Texas City and Vickie Carey and Charlie of Bedias, Texas. He was married, several times, and referred to them as Linda 1 and Linda 2. He married Barbara in 2001.

He was a loyal member of the International Association of Machinists and Aerospace Worker. He was a "card carrying" Democrat and would defend his stance with his last breath.

He was in recovery for more than 22 years. He lived the last third of his life carrying the message of hope, love and faith. He went to great lengths to help others know the joys that clean living could bring. He was a member of Center Christian Fellowship.

Harold Robertson, 86, of Center, passed away Saturday, December 11, 2010 in Shreveport, Louisiana. He was born January 28, 1924 in Blytheville, Arkansas to John William "Jack" Robertson and Tassie Mai Moore Robertson. Mr. Robertson served his country in the Army during World War II. He was retired from Shelby County where he served as the Chief Tax Appraiser. Mr. Robertson previously served as County Judge. He was employed by Citizen’s Bank and worked a number of years as a realtor. Mr. Robertson was a member of the First United Methodist Church in Center.

Buford Parrish, 89, loving, devoted and caring husband and father passed away on December 6, 2010. He is preceded in death by his parents, Herman and Hazel Parrish; son, Brian Parrish, M.D., and his loving wife, Marjorie Parrish.

Rebecca Sue Beardsley Cuculic (Becky), 56, of Montgomery, Texas went to be with the Lord on December 9, 2010 in her home. She was the wife of Mark Cuculic, whom she was happily married to since September 23, 1973.

Becky’s favorite past-time was spending time with her family, especially her two grandkids, who lovingly called her Bebe. She also loved renovating and decorating her homes, making pottery, horseback riding, and animal rescue.

She was truly beautiful, both inside and out. Everyone enjoyed her presence. She will always be remembered for her loving heart, her faith in Christ, and her courage and endless strength.

The daughter of the late Charles and Maxine Beardsley, she was born on February 3, 1954 in Austin and educated in Austin public schools. She received her Bachelor of Science degree from Central Missouri State and her Master of Science Degree from the University of Houston. She worked as a technical supervisor in the Texas DWI program for over 20 years. She had the reputation of being one of the best in her field.

She is survived by her husband, Mark Cuculic, daughters, Poppy Cuculic Jones, Cara Cuculic, and Leah Cuculic Peterson, sons-in-law: Brent Jones and Jason Peterson, grandchildren Bryce and Lainey Rebecca Jones; sisters Charline Eppright, Makki Bigman, Barbara Johnson, and Cathy Miller.

Funeral services for Mr. Alzie Carl Reeves, 85 of Carthage, Texas will be 11:00 a.m., Saturday, December 11, 2010 at the Galloway United Methodist Church with Rev. Mervin Scott and Rev. Dennis White officiating. Burial will follow in the Reeves-McMillan Cemetery under the direction of Hawthorn Funeral Home. Family visitation will be Friday, December 10, 2010 from 6–8:00 p.m. at the funeral home. Mr. Reeves died Wednesday, December 8, 2010 in Carthage, Texas.

Mr. Alzie Carl Reeves was born August 24, 1925 in Panola County, Texas to the marriage of Loney A. “Lou” and Mattie Johnson Reeves. Alzie attended Reeves and Yarnell schools and served his country during World War II in the United States Army. He met and married Novie “Jean” Reeves on April 13, 1946 and celebrated 64 years together. Mr. Reeves worked as a mechanic and pipeliner and enjoyed fishing, hunting and camping in his free time. He was a longtime member of the Galloway United Methodist Church and loved to listen to the gospel singing’s at Logan. Mr. Reeves is preceded in death by his parents and siblings, Clara Walker, Mary Harrison, Winnie Reeves, Jennie Yount, Lerlene White, Earl Reeves and Edward Reeves.

Mr. Reeves is survived by his wife, Jean Reeves of Galloway; brother-in-laws, James Sholar and wife Wanda of Petal, MS, Roger Wiggins of Galloway; sister-in-laws, Gladys Reeves of Houston, Ethel Mumm and husband Paul of Tenaha; numerous nieces, nephews and a host of friends. The Reeves family would like to give a special thanks to Panola Care and Rehab, Dr. Keith Keeling and His PA, Angie Hardee and Heartsway Hospice.

Serving as pallbearers are David White, Kenneth White, Douglas White, John Sholar, Jerry Harrison, Lucky Buchanan. Honorary pallbearer is Dennis White.

J.T. Adams, 58, of Lufkin, passed away Monday, December 6, 2010 in Arkansas City, Kansas. He was born March 21, 1952 in Memphis, Tennessee to John R. Adams and Betty Lovell Adams.

Visitation will be held from 6:00 pm to 8:00 pm, Thursday, December 9, 2010 at Watson & Sons Funeral Home in Center. Funeral services will be held at 2:00 pm, Friday, December 10, 2010 at Watson & Sons Chapel with Bro. J.C. Dawson and Bro. Chris Fleniken officiating. Interment will follow at Antioch Cemetery in Shelby County.

Mr. Askew was born November 2, 1915 in Shelby County to parents, William King Askew & Charity (Creech) Askew. Mr. Askew has pastored at Mt. Herman Baptist Church and New Bethel Baptist Church and he served as interim pastor for Harmony Baptist & Patroon Missionary Baptist Church and assistant pastor at Clever Creek Baptist Church where he was a member. He was a past member of the Shelbyville Sam Houston Masonic Lodge # 32.

Funeral services for Era Maxine Williams 78, of Rosenberg, were held at 2:00 p.m. Monday, December 6, 2010, at Calvary Baptist Church in Rosenberg, TX, with Pastor Byron Williams officiating. Interment is to follow on Tuesday, December 7, at 10:00 a.m. at Oaklawn Memorial Park in Center, TX, with Reverend Michael Williams officiating. Pallbearers were Darryl Williams, Doug Cavender, Andy Cavender, Richard Veyna, Frank Lombardo, and Barry Lebus.
Visitation took place from7 p.m. to 9 p.m. on Sunday, December 5, at Calvary Baptist Church, 4111 Airport Avenue, in Rosenberg.

Maxine, whom many of her family called ‘Macky,’ was born July 14, 1932, to Leona Williams and A.A. Dean, and she was preceded in death by both of her parents; her younger sister, Georgia Viola Dean; and her husband of 54 years, M.W. Williams. She died at the Oak Bend Skilled Nursing Facility after suffering from lung disease for the past month.
She is survived by her sister, Hazel Dean Williams and husband, K.P. of Center, TX; brother, Tommy Dean and wife, Peggy of Livingston, TX; daughter, Rhonda Williams Cavender and husband, Doug of Rosenberg, TX; daughter, Karen Williams Lombardo and husband, Frank of Houston, TX; son, Darryl Williams and wife, Cassie Shafer of Hanover, MD; daughter, Felecia Williams Lebus and husband, Barry of Houston, TX; seven grandchildren: Carlos Sherrell, Beth Cavender Veyna (and husband Richard), Andy Cavender, Nina Lombardo, Christopher Lombardo, Darryl Lebus, and Drew Lebus; and two great-grandchildren, Isaac Hall and Maya Sherrell.

She moved several times throughout her lifetime, but three churches and the people that she came to love there were especially precious to her: First Baptist Church of Genoa, Texas; First Baptist Church of Fairfield, Texas, and Calvary Baptist Church in Rosenberg, Texas.

Maxine devoted her life to following Jesus, whom she knew as her personal Lord and Savior, and to being a good wife and mother. Her children “rise up and call her blessed,” and her family feels certain that when she entered heaven, she heard the words, “Well done, good and faithful servant.” Her last days were difficult, but she looked forward to heaven. Her only regret was leaving her family. She loved people, and they loved her right back. She will be greatly, greatly missed.

The family has requested that memorials to honor Maxine go to support missionary work in Nicaragua. They may be sent c/o Calvary Baptist Church, 4111 Airport Avenue, Rosenberg, TX 77471.

Carrie Ella Powell passed away in a Kaufman hospital on Nov. 23, 2010. Carrie was born in the Mark Out community Jan. 22, 1918 to Charles Williams and Maude Hollums.

Carrie moved to Crandall when she started school and lived the rest of her life in Crandall. She was a member of the First Baptist Church of Crandall. Carrie married Barney James Rushing in 1934 and he preceded her in death in 1956. Carrie then married Benjamin Clay Powell and he preceded her in death in 1991.

Carrie is survived by her sons, J. L. Rushing of Gilmer, Charles Rushing of Center, Edward Rushing of Garland and Harold Rushing of Whitney; daughters, Betty Curtis of Seven Points and Melba Davis of Crandall; 11 grandchildren; 16 great-grandchildren; three great-great-grandchildren; and many other relatives and friends.

Funeral services were held Saturday, Nov. 27, 2010 at 10 a.m. at the First Baptist Church of Crandall with interment following in Crandall Cemetery.

Freeda Curtis Gandy, 63, of Houston, formerly of Shelby County, passed away Wednesday, December 1, 2010 at Colonial Pines Nursing Home in San Augustine, Texas.

Graveside Service will be 2:00 p.m. Thursday, December 2, 2010 at Rather Cemetery with Bro. Welton Blackmon officiating.

She was born April 8, 1947 in Shelby County to Vance Curtis and Bernice (Luman) Curtis Ford. She was a member of Willow Meadows Baptist Church in Houston.

She is preceded in death by her Father, Vance Curtis, Husband, Sterling Gandy, Jr. Grandparents, Lum and Dollie Luman and Special Aunt, Martha McCary.

Rose Marie GeBron Hand went to be with her Lord and Savior Sunday, November 28, 2010. Rose was born in Dallas, TX on March 11, 1936 to Samual and Pauline (Rahal) GeBron. She was the youngest of five children and the only girl. Her brothers, Dave GeBron, Robert GeBron (deceased), Gene T. GeBron and Victor GeBron, all of the Dallas area, loved their little sister.

Rose Marie was blessed with six pregnancies, all of Dallas, the first, a baby boy passed at birth. Her second child, Rebecca Jo (Winfrey) Greenburg was born January 1958. Becky had two children, Steven C. Wade and Jessica L. Greenburg. Becky lost her life to cancer January 13, 1994.

Ronald Mark Winfrey was born 1961 and has one child Rebekah Dawn Winfrey.

Rachel Maynette (Winfrey – Rickman) Campbell was born 1963 and now resides in East Texas with her husband Rick. Rachel has three children and three grandchildren with two more due in the next few months. Her children are Christopher R. Rickman and wife, Kathleen. They have three children, Christopher Michael, Corinne Faye and Corissa Lena-Marie. They are expecting their fourth child in mid 2011. Autumn Shae (Rickman) Smith and husband Justin are expecting their first child, a boy, in March 2011. And, Kathryn Maynette Rickman, not married.

Jack Lance Knearem and wife, Kim has one child, Lauren Marie Knearem. Jack was born 1970. Kevin Keith Knearem passed away at 4 months of age of SIDS.

During her time as a single mom, Rose worked for the Marriott Corp., and attended El Centro College and Richland College both in Dallas. Rose Marie was a champion bowler in the National Amateur Bowlers, Inc. and the Women’s Amateur Bowlers Assoc. She enjoyed the friendly competition and skill needed in bowling.

Over the past several years, Rose Marie carried a heavy burden of caring for her husband Charles as he battled heart disease. Then continuing on with the care of her mom, Pauline, till her mom's passing in late 2010 at the age of 99. Rose Marie continued to work through all. She was employed for the last four years at BigLots!, in North Richland Hills, TX as a cashier.

Rose leaves each of her loved ones with a special memory of their own to carry on with them, A memory so special that only a mom can give her children. Her love was felt throughout her widespread family. Numerous nieces, nephews and cousins were blessed with the love that Rose gave. She will be surely missed.

Rose Marie will be laid to rest on Thursday, December 2, 2010 at Calvary Hill Funeral Home and Cemetery in Dallas, TX. Visitation will be from 10:00 am – 12:00pm. Mass/Service will be at 12 Noon with burial immediately following.
