Frances Williams, 88, of Center, passed away Saturday, May 29, 2010 at her residence. She was born March 21, 1922 in Shelby County to Edward Frank Hammers and Blanche Fuller Hammers. SMs. Williams was a homemaker, mother and grandmother. She was a member of First Baptist Church in Center.
Visitation will be held from 6-9 pm, Sunday, May 30, 2010 at Watson and Sons Funeral Home in Center. Funeral services will be held at 2 pm, Monday, May 31, 2010 at Watson and Sons Chapel with Bro. Michael Hale officiating. Interment will follow at Oaklawn Memorial Park in Center.
Pallbearers will be James Windham, J.C. Windham, David Brown, Alex Brown and Eric Williams.

Jean Andrews Lawson, 75, of Center, passed away Friday, May 28, 2010 at her residence. She was born June 17, 1934 in Patroon, Texas to James J. Andrews and Iva Mae Ogden. Mrs. Lawson worked as a nurse for over 35 years, 30 of which were at Holiday Nursing Center. She was a member of the Red Hat Society. Mrs. Lawson was a member of the First Baptist Church where she was also a member of the Rachel Sunday School Class.
Visitation will be held from 6 to 9 pm, Monday, May 31, 2010 at Watson & Sons Funeral Home in Center. Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m., Tuesday, June 1, 2010 at First Baptist Church in Center with Bro. Michael Hale and Bro. Carl Smith officiating. Interment will follow at the Antioch Cemetery in Shelby County.
Pallbearers will be Cade Yarbrough, Nathan Yarbrough, Blake Barr, Bruce Yarbrough, Charles Barr and Joseph Andrews. Honorary pallbearers will be Jordon Horn, Larry Horn, Marlin Hardy and Steve Barr.

Jewel Spinks, 79, of San Augustine, passed from this life in the early morning hours of Tuesday, May 25, 2010, at a hospital in Center.
Jewel was born to the late Mary Magdalene (Bailey) Townsend and Robert Ernest Townsend on August 18, 1930, in Baytown, Texas. She was a Food Service Supervisor for a local Nursing Home, and a member of the Missionary Baptist Church.
Funeral Services will be held at 10:00 a.m. Friday, May 28, 2010, at Wyman Roberts Memorial Chapel with Bro. Hiriam Melton officiating. Interment will follow in the Antioch Cemetery in San Augustine County. Visitation will be Thursday evening, May 27, 2010, from the hours of 5:00 p.m. - 8:00 p.m. at Wyman Roberts Funeral Home, 316 West Columbia St., San Augustine.

Funeral services for Harold E. Stephens, 87, of Willis, TX, (formerly of Timpson, TX) will be held at 10:00 AM, Wednesday, May 26, 2010, at Sam Houston Memorial Funeral Home in Montgomery, TX, with interment in Bethel Cemetery, Montgomery. Mr. Stephens passed away in Willis, TX, on May 23, 2010.
Harold was a retired Houston Police Officer and had also been employed with the Shelby County Sheriff’s Department and U.S. Postal Service.
Survivors include his wife, Beth of Willis; sons, Eric Stephens and wife Judy of Anchorage, Alaska, and William “Bill” Stephens and wife Jill of Houston; granddaughters, Erin & Allison Stephens, and grandson Kevin Stephens of Houston, TX.
Sam Houston Memorial Funeral Home of Montgomery, TX, is in charge of arrangements.
Doris Marie Cole Marcantel, 80, passed away May 24, 2010, at Twin Lakes Care Center, San Augustine, TX. She was born Sept. 12, 1929, in Ragley, LA to Al and Alice McFatter Cole. She had resided in Sabine County since 1985. Doris was a loving mother and grandmother and a member of the Bronson Baptist Church.
Doris is survived by four children, Bill Marcantel and his wife Sharon of Darrington, WA, Lin Marcantel of Bronson, Nell McBride and husband Larry of Pineland and Nita Adkison and husband Mike of Center, TX. She is also survived by eight grandchildren, fourteen great grandchildren, four sister-in-laws, Lola Mitchell, Marie Cole, Chee Chee Cole and Loraine Marcantel, and numerous nieces and nephews. Doris was preceded in death by her parents and five brothers, Russell, Anson, Paul, Outher and Murphy Cole.
Visitation will be Wednesday, May 26, 2010, from 4:30 PM until 9:00 PM in the Starr Funeral Home, 510 Starr St., Hemphill, TX. Funeral services will be at 2:00 PM Thursday, May 27, 2010, in the Starr Funeral Home Chapel. Burial will follow in the Centerview Cemetery near Bronson, TX.

Jo Anne Manning Walker, 72, of Center, passed away Monday, May 24, 2010 in Shreveport, Louisiana. She was born July 24, 1937 in Joaquin to Walter D. Manning, Jr. and Alice Louise May Manning. Mrs. Walker graduated from Center High School in 1955 and Panola Junior College in 1957, where she had a 4.0 grade point average. She was previously a member of the Center Rotary Club, head of the Citizen’s Bank travel club and a Girl Scout leader. She retired from Citizen’s Bank, where she was an officer for over twenty years. The “Jo Anne Walker Scholarship For Success” has been established by her family which is given to a deserving student yearly.
Visitation will be held from 5:00 pm to 7:00 pm, Wednesday, May 26, 2010 at Watson & Sons Funeral Home in Center. Funeral services will be held at 10:00 am, Thursday, May 27, 2010 at Watson & Sons Chapel with Bro. Mickey Chandler and Bro. D. J. Dickerson officiating. Pamela Jean Oswald, age 51, of Livingston, passed away Saturday, May 22, 2010 in Livingston TX. She was born April 16, 1959 in Pasadena, Texas to father Sidney Tatum and mother Orlena Tate Tatum.

Mrs. Claudene Peavy, 81, of Nacogdoches, formerly of San Augustine, passed away late Thursday evening, May 20, 2010, at a hospital in Nacogdoches, Texas.
Claudene was born to Lois (Lilly) Powers and Claude Powers on April 21, 1929, in Timpson, Texas. She was employed as a Secretary working in the Insurance Company for many years.
Funeral Services will be held on Sunday at 2 p.m., May 23, 2010, at the Wyman Roberts Memorial Chapel in San Augustine, with interment following in the Liberty Hill Memorial Gardens in San Augustine. Officiating will be Bro. Buddy Pratt, and Bro. Doug Fincher.
Visitation will be from the hours of 5:00 p.m. - 8:00 p.m. at Wyman Roberts Funeral Home, 316 West Columbia St., San Augustine.

Funeral services for Mrs. Emily Ann Adams Dickey, age 63, of Joaquin, Texas, will be held at 10 a.m. on Monday, May 24, 2010, at Jimerson-Lipsey Funeral Home Chapel with Rev. Paul Thomasson officiating. Interment will follow in Restland Memorial Park near Carthage. The family will receive friends from 2-4 p.m. on Sunday at the funeral home. Mrs. Dickey passed away on Friday morning, May 21, 2010, in Tyler.
Emily Ann Adams Dickey was born on May 8, 1947, in Texarkana, Arkansas. She was the adopted daughter and only child born to the marriage of James Lowell and Jessie Lema Lollar Adams. She was the maternal granddaughter of Gordon T. Lollar and Amanda Ratcliff Lollar and the paternal granddaughter of Rubin R. Adams and Emma Lee Dingler Adams.
She grew up in Texarkana, Texas and had a happy childhood, living next door to the family owned grocery store. She attended Beverley Elementary School, graduated high school at Texas High, and attended Texarkana College. She later completed her education at Central Western University. Active in the music industry for many years, she was one of the first women to break into the field of record promotion, winning several awards for her accomplishments, including the prestigious Association of Independent Radio’s Promoter of the Year in 1986.
She married Dan Benjamin Dickey on April 7, 1967, in Sherman, Texas. Emily was a lifelong member of the United Methodist Church. In high school, she was a member of the Methodist Youth Fellowship, Girl Scouts, and Rainbow Girls. As an adult, she was a member of the Young Homemakers of Texas and was active in the community, doing volunteer work in nursing homes and the schools where her children attended. Her hobbies included playing the piano, bowling, sewing, and gospel music. Later in life, until stricken by a disabling stroke, she touched many lives, helping the elderly and shut-ins by assisting with shopping and personal chores and sharing her Christian testimony. She was preceded in death by her parents.
Mrs. Dickey is survived by her husband of 43 years, Dan B. Dickey of Joaquin; t hree daughters, Angela Grupp and husband Jeff of Rowlett, Monica Bishop and husband Shawn of Carthage, and Melanie Kitchens and husband Jason of Aurora; and five grandchildren, Ashley Grupp, Tiffany Grupp, Faith Kitchens, Berlin Kitchens, and Aspen Bishop.
Serving as pallbearers are Donny Dickey, Matthew Dickey, James Dickey, Jeff Grupp, Shawn Bishop, and Jason Kitchens.

Floyd Adolphus (Dock) Watson, age 81, of the Paxton Community passed away, Thursday, May 20, 2010 at his home following a lengthy illness, surrounded by his loving family.
Funeral Services will be 2 p.m., Sunday, May 23, 2010 at Mangum Funeral Home Chapel in Center. Burial will follow at Oaklawn Memorial Park. Officiating will be Rev. Charles Williams and Rev. Billy Freeman, honorary. Visitation will be Saturday evening from 2 p.m. until 8 p.m. in Mangum Funeral Home Chapel. Pallbearers : Tom Watkins, Arney Strickland, Lon Sharver, Glenn Gill, Gene Wayne Hutto, Bobby Watson, Cliff Todd and Waylon Moore. Dock was born February 22, 1929 in Eldorado, Arkansas to Sidney & Mary (Hataway) Watson. He attended Edgefield School in Paxton and graduated from Tenaha High School in 1946. Dock attended Sam Houston State University and then Stephen F. Austin State Teachers College where he received a degree in Agriculture and a Masters in Education in 1950. Dock served in the US Air Force for a brief time during the Korean Conflict. Dock returned to Shelby County and married Fannie Baldwin.
Their 58 year marriage blessed them with three children. He is survived by wife, Fannie Watson and daughters: Brenda & husband, Gene Giles of Carthage, Glenda & husband, Charlie Leflett of Joaquin and Steven Joe Watson of the Paxton Community. Also surviving are eight grandchildren: Crista & husband, Michael Black, Cara & husband, Brian Morris, Alex & husband, Ashley Rowe, Cole Leflett, Carly, Will, Sam & Jake Watson, and three loving great grandchildren: Alexis & Addison Rowe and Cameron Black. Two sisters-in-law: Ruth Stephens & husband, Collis and Jo Watson. Dock was uncle to: Bobby Watson & wife, Kay, Patty Watkins & husband, Tom, Kathy Mouser & husband, Nathan and Tammy Smith. He is preceded in death by his parents, Sidney & Mary Watson, brothers, Doyle Watson and Robert Earl Watson; in-laws, Clarence and Bessie Baldwin and Bea Watson. Also preceding him in death, nephew, Bill Watson & wife, Katha and niece, Anita & husband, W.H. Nichols.
He was an active member of the Paxton United Methodist Church and The Gideon’s International Organization. He began his teaching and administration career in Center, TX in 1949-1967. He also worked part time at Mangum Funeral Home, Texas Eastern, Head Start and Community Action. From 1945 until 1981 he also operated S. S. Watson Dairy. Dock served as Tenaha School Superintendent from 1967-1982. Following, he served as Joaquin ISD Superintendent for five years. Dock was elected Shelby County Judge in 1982 where he served for sixteen years. Dock served on many boards: Paxton Water Supply, Shelby County Hospital Board, Deep East Texas Council of Government, Deep East Texas Electric Co-Op Board of Directors, Resource, Conservation and Development Council, Shelby Panola College Advisory Board, and the Shelby Soil Conservation Committee. Other business ventures were Toledo Finance, Shelby County Savings and Tenaha Milling Company.
He was awarded the Shelby County Distinguished Citizen of the Year in 1994. In 1995 he received the Sam Samford Lodge #149 Community Builders Award. Tenaha ISD inducted him into their Hall of Honor in 2004. Dock also received the Tenaha Masonic Lodge Community Builders Award in 2008. Close to his heart was the restoration of the 1885 Shelby County Courthouse and working with Shelby County citizens.

Mrs. Frances Joe Oates, 74, of Center, passed away Thursday, May 20, 2010 at Christus Schumpert in Shreveport, LA.
Graveside Service will be 3:00 p.m. Saturday, May 22, 2010 at Fairview Cemetery with Bro. Carl Smith and Bro. Michael Hale officiating. No visitation is planned.
She was born December 18, 1935 in Denton, Texas to William and Phadolia (Matthews) Shepherd. Mrs. Oates, was a woman with an outstanding record of service to her fellow citizens and worked continuously for bettering the lives of those living in the community. Mrs. Oates was a registered nurse and worked alongside her husband, Dr. Steve Oates for many years. She was dedicated to the many activities her two sons, Reid and Shepard were involved in. She was a scout leader as well as very involved in the Little League organization and Athletic Boosters. She was a member of Beta Sigma Phi and the Women’s Reading Club. Mrs. Oates, was first elected to the City of Center Council in April 12, 1982, serving continuously until her death, and was appointed Mayor Pro tem a member of the City Council Committees for Financial/Audit, Streetscape Steering, Parks, and also represented the Council on the Board of Directors for the City of Center Economic Development Corporation and the Center Industrial Development Authority, and the Chairman of the City of Center Main Street Program. Mrs. Oates also served as Chairman of the Fannie Brown Booth Library; Vice Chairman of DETCOG, member of the DETCOG Grant Review Committee. Mrs. Oates was very active in the community. She was a charter member of the Lake Areas Art League. Mrs. Oates served as the President of the Shelby County Chamber, and was Chairman of the East Texas Poultry Festival for over thirty years, Ambassador President, active Ambassador, Endowed the East Texas Poultry Festival Queen’s Court Pageant, served on the Queen’s Court committee and served on the Health Care committee. Mrs. Oates received the Outstanding Young Woman of the Year award in 1976 and the Distinguished Service Award in 1993, member of the Ladies Reading Club, Mrs. Oates was appointed by Governor Ann Richards to be on the board of the Executive Women in Texas Government .
She is preceded in death by her Parents, William and Phadolia Shepherd.

Thomas “Jeff” Sims, 87, of Center, passed away Thursday, May 20, 2010 at Shelby Regional Medical Center. He was born October 6, 1922 in the Campti Community of Shelby County to Jesse James Sims and Cynthia Caroline Byrd Sims. Mr. Sims was of the Pentecostal faith. He was a member of the LineCo Construction Electrical Union.

Hellen Schillings Sanders, 79, of Dialville Tx. passed away Sunday, May 16th, 2010 at the home of her daughter in Cherokee County. Hellen was a 1947 graduate of Center High School. She was the daughter of the late Bill and Lilia Schillings. Helen was married to the late Bro. Billy Sanders and they lived in around Shelby County while he pastored churches. They had been at Clever Creek Baptist church in the late 50's and early 60's.
Services will be gravesite only, Wendsday, May 19th, 2010, in Nacogdoches Oak Grove Cemetery with visitation at 1:30 and burial at 2:00.

Jane Ellen Parker Jones, 60, of Center, passed away Thursday, May 13, 2010 in Center. She was born February 6, 1950 in Shelby County to Dan Parker and Virginia Harrison Parker. Mrs. Jones was a member of the First United Methodist Church in Center. She was a member of the National Cutting Horse Association and the American Quarter Horse Association.

Mrs. June Ainsworth, age 73, passed away today, May 13, 2010, at a local nursing home in San Augustine. She was born July 7, 1936, in Buhl, Idaho, to the late Fred and Tina McRoberts.

Willis passed away May 13, 2010, in Nacogdoches.
Willis was born December 30, 1933, in Shelby County, Texas, to Woodrow and Ibera Wilson. He served in the U.S. Army during the Korean Conflict. Willis was retired from Texas Farm Products after 35 years. He was a member of Christian Life Center UPCI.
Willis and Bennie (Gentry) Wilson were married April 4, 1959, and she survives him. Also surviving is a daughter, Phyllis Wilson of Nacogdoches, Texas.
He was preceded in death by his parents.

Doris Gertrude Wagner passed away peacefully at her residence on May 10, 2010. Doris was born on Oct. 13, 1919 to George and Merinda Chorpening on the family farm north of Alamo, TX. She was a graduate of Pharr-San Juan-Alamo High School and the University of Texas. During WW II, Doris worked for the F.B.I. in San Antonio and had very fond memories of her co-workers and friends.
She married Paul F. Wagner on March 8, 1946 after he returned from military service in WWII in the South Pacific. Paul passed away July 12, 2004. Doris was a proud member of P.E.O. Chapter DS, a philanthropic educational organization, for over 60 years and served as local chapter president numerous times. She loved to play bridge with her many friends, often playing two to three times a week. Doris was an “old time” cook as she had an uncanny ability for putting up vegetables and her delicious fruit preserves. Her sons will greatly miss her succulent fried oysters and Christmas candy.
Doris is survived by three sons and their wives, Gary P. and Deborah Wagner of Center, TX, James T. and Teresa Wagner of McAllen, TX, Randall L. and Mary Gay Wagner of Kerrville, TX; grandchildren, Kenneth and Nikki Wagner of Center, TX, Peyton and Gavin Hawk of St. Petersburg, FL, Jason and Christina Wagner of Austin, TX, Amy and Chris Schmanski of Collingswood, NJ, Hunter Wagner of San Marcos, TX, Merinda and Richard Goodman of Caddo Mills, TX, Phillips Wagner of Kerrville, TX; and seven great-grandchildren.

Felicia Jo Norris, age 77, died Sunday, May 9th in Houston, Texas. Mrs. Norris was born February 2, 1933 in Brenham, Texas to Theron Ellis and Sue Smith Floyd Moses. Felicia and her husband, the late Ross Edward Norris, Sr. grew up together in Center, Texas where they married in 1953. Along with their two sons, they made their home in Victoria for over fifty years. Felicia was a long-time employee of the Estate of Thomas O’Connor.

Karen Alyne Smith, 64, of Salado died Thursday, May 6, 2010 at her residence. Memorial services will be held at 2:00 P.M. Saturday May 8, 2010 at Unitarian Universalist Fellowship of Bell County.

Mrs. Smith was born Nov. 8, 1945 in Beaumont to Gordon Nelson and Dorothy Daugherty Nelson. She married Obe Kymbol Smith February 29, 1958. She received her Bachelors and Masters Degrees from the University of Houston. She moved to Belton twenty years ago from New Jersey. She worked as the Librarian for the Temple Public Library having retired March 31, 2010. She was a member of Unitarian Universalist Fellowship of Bell County.
Survivors include her husband Obe Kymbol Smith of Salado; one daughter Amy Alyne Smith of Salado; one stepson Kymbol Smith of Salado; two stepdaughters Crystal Church of Belton and Gina Walker of Port Bolivar; her father Gordon Nelson of Timpson; one brother Don Nelson of Center and one sister Nancy Stockman of Temple.

Mrs. Gloria Jean Briley Mayfield was born December 9, 1940 in Winters, Runnels County, Texas as the daughter of Myrtle Best Wood and Robert Lee Briley, Sr. Mrs. Mayfield was retired from the Kroger company, later retiring from Sams after eight years of service and was the owner of Glory Bee Creations. She received her degree from Panola College in Computer Information Systems and a degree in Applied Science from the California College for Health Sciences, majoring in Medical Transcription and Computers Information Systems.Gloria Married Mr. Wlmer A. “Red” Mayfield May 29, 1972 and celebrated 35 years together until he preceded her in death on August 6, 2007.
Gloria was a seventeen year member and officer of the National Society of the Daughters of the American Revolution, Thomas J. Rusk Chapter, The United Daughters of The Confederacy, The Daughters of the Republic of Texas, Longview, The National Society of Colonial Dames XVII Century, and The Magna Charter Dames. She was also a member of the Texas Genealogy Association and was an Accredited Genealogist of the American College of Genealogists. She had written several books about her family ancestors. She was active in the TX GenWeb, served from 1999-200 as the SW/SC CC Rep, USGenWeb Advisory Board and web mistress of the Cemeteries of TX, TX Surnames, and numerous county websites.
Mrs. Mayfield was a member of the Women Auxiliary of the Veterans of Foreign Wars Auxiliary, The American Legion Women Auxiliary, and the Auxiliary of the Disabled Veterans Association. .She was Past Matron of the Order of the Eastern Star, Henderson Chapter No. 597, and an endowed member of Carthage, Chapter No 747. She was of the Baptist Faith, currently member of the Bar None Cowboy Church in Tatum. Interment will follow in Blair Cemetery, Timpson. Mr. McWilliams passed away May 8, 2010, in Garrison, TX.
Born in the Bobo Community of Shelby County, Texas, Thomas Lamar McWilliams was the son of the late Thomas Lee and Lillie (Wilson) McWilliams. He and Quinteen Green were married November 9, 1936. Lamar retired as a division supervisor for Texas Gas after 48 years of service and was a veteran of the U.S. Army. He was a member of First Baptist Church, Timpson, serving as a deacon and church treasurer, and was also a member of American Legion Post #90 in Timpson.
Survivors include his daughter Linda Bills and husband Bill of Brentwood, TN; grandson James Lamar Bills and wife Lara of Beckley, West Virginia; granddaughter Laura Fay Bills Essner and husband Jon of Nashville, TN; great grandchildren: Sara Margaret Bills, Calloway Reeves Bills, Jay Thomas Essner, and Bryce Patrick Essner; and sister-in-law June Mims of Timpson.

Georgia Marquette Wallace Emanis Oliver
Marquette “Coot” Oliver passed away on May 7, 2010 in Center, Texas at the age of 92. Marquette, one of eight children, was born on December 8, 1917, in the Arcadia Community of Shelby County, to parents, Frank Wallace and Flossie Mae Pate Wallace.
Marquette attended Cooper school until she was 16. She then traveled alone to Freeport, Texas where she worked in a hospital while finishing high school. Her dream was to become a nurse. That dream didn’t materialize until she was in her 50’s when she finally obtained her LVN license from the Panola Nursing School. She then worked at Shelby General Hospital and other local nursing facilities for a number of years.
Marquette married Rebel Eloy Emanis, also of Arcadia, where they farmed for a short time and their first child Jackie was born. They moved to Freeport where Eloy worked at Dow Chemical and their second child, Ronald Eloy Emanis, was born.
Around 1951, the Emanis Family moved back to Arcadia where Marquette enjoyed cooking, gardening, sewing, and quilting. In 1982, at the age of 70, Eloy passed away. Marquette later rekindled her friendship with Olen Oliver who also grew up in Arcadia. The two were married August 9, 1987 in Timpson. They had been married for 23 years and lived in Center. She was baptized a member of the Arcadia Missionary Baptist Church and was a long time member of the Timpson Missionary Baptist Church.
Marquette Oliver was preceded in death by her parents, Frank and Flossie Wallace; first husband, Eloy Emanis; brother Jesse Franklin; and sister Vada Mae Tinsley. She is survived by her husband, Olen Oliver of Center; daughter, Jackie Emanis Grant and husband Neil, of the Arcadia Community; son, Ronnie Emanis and wife Charlsey, of Center; three stepsons, Olen Oliver Jr. and wife Linda of Pasadena, Jim Oliver and wife Glenda of LaPorte, and Richard Oliver and wife Vickie of Houston. Also five grandchildren, Doice Grant and wife Beth of Longview, Dr. Derek Grant and wife Ann of Center, Greg Grant of Arcadia, Kerry Grant Greer and husband Reed of Melissa, Texas, and Aleta Whitton and husband Jeremy of Center; 10 great-grandchildren; 5 step grandchildren; 12 step great-grandchildren; three sisters, Marguerite Adams, Sue Hagler, and Marsha Askew; two brothers, Bud Wallace and wife Billie, and Joe Wallace and wife Elaine; also numerous nieces, nephews, and a host of other family members and friends.
Pallbearers will be grandsons Doice Grant, Dr. Derek Grant, Greg Grant, Olen Oliver Jr., Jim Oliver, and Richard Oliver. Honorary pallbearers will be great grandsons Reed Grant, Seth Grant, Levi Grant, Trace Greer, August Greer, Jack Greer, and Judson Greer.
Visitation will be held at Watson and Son Funeral home in Center Saturday May 8 from 6:00-8:00 pm. Funeral services will be held on Sunday May 9 at 2:00 pm at Watson and Sons Funeral Home.
Mrs. Oliver will be laid to rest with generations of family members gone on before at the Pleasant Grove Cemetery near the Arcadia Community. Her children and grandchildren will provide a musical farewell. In lieu of flowers donations, may be made to the Timpson Missionary Baptist Church or Life Care Hospice of Nacogdoches.
John A. White, Jr., 89, of Tenaha, passed away Friday, May 7, 2010 at his home. He was born July 31, 2020 in Tenaha to John A. White, Sr. and Mary Belle Holt White. At the age of 10, John took up the guitar and, in a very short time, was accompanying the local fiddler at dances. At the age of 15, he enlisted in the Civilian Conservation Corps and became the camp rhythm guitarist for Camp Maydell, located between Rusk and Palestine. He was a founding member of “The Bluegrass Ramblers” in the early 60’s. For years he played extensively all over Texas with some of the best fiddler and banjo players. His love of singing and playing the guitar never ceased. He graduated from Tenaha High School in 1938 and married Mayzell Samford on May 19, 1939. Mr. White worked as a welder in the shipyards in Baltimore, Maryland, and in Houston, before World War II. He was then drafted and served in the US Navy aboard the battleship “USS Mississippi” in the Pacific Theatre, where he was an eyewitness to the Japanese surrender in Tokyo Bay on September 2, 1945. After the war, Mr. White moved to LaPorte, where he worked as a welder for Shell Oil Company. He was eventually promoted to the position of “welding specialist” and wrote all the weld procedures for pressure equipment for Shell nationwide. In April 1981, Mr. White retired from Shell after 34 years of service and moved to Lake Murvaul, near Gary, where he and Mayzell enjoyed fishing and gardening.

Funeral service will be held at 2:00 pm, Monday, May 10, 2010 at Ramah Baptist Church in Tenaha with Bro. Douglas McDonald and Bro. Keith Keele officiating. Interment will follow at Ramah Cemetery in Tenaha.
Pallbearers will be Cliff Young, Johnny Gibbs, Ronnie Samford, Jack White, Bennie Martin and Chris Pena.

Phyllis Brewer Graves of Shreveport passed peacefully on May 6, 2010. She was born on December 20, 1939, in New Port Rhode Island. As a daughter of career naval officer, she spent her childhood in locations throughout the United States. Phyllis dedicated her life to service, both as a nurse and a teacher.
Phyllis received her bachelor’s degree in nursing from Northwestern State University 1961, master’s degree in public health from Tulane University in 1965 and doctoral degree in nursing from the University of Alabama, Birmingham in1979.
After becoming a nurse, she began working in a hospital operating and recovery rooms. She also worked as a public health nurse, including working with handicapped children services. Phyllis became a nursing educator in 1965. Phyllis served for one year as an instructor at the Louisiana State Universality School of Nursing in New Orleans, two years as an instructor at Confederate Hospital School of Nursing in Shreveport and two years as an instructor at the LSU School of Medicine in Shreveport. She was a member of Northwestern State University faculty in Shreveport, Louisiana from 1975 to 1986, where she served as a professor and head of the baccalaureate nursing program. A published author of textbooks and articles, Phyllis was a member of the American Nurses Association, American Public Health Association and Sigma Theta Tau. She served on numerous professional committees and was a founding member of the Shreveport Mayor’s Women’s’ Commission.
Phyllis enjoyed traveling, reading and, as is said in south Louisiana, “passing a good time.”
Phyllis is survived by her loving husband, Reggie Graves, brother, Charles Brewer and family, son, Bob Graves and wife Kathy and grandchildren, Morgan and Ellis.
A memorial service celebrating Phyllis’ life will be held at King’s Highway Christian Church in Shreveport on Saturday, May 8, 2010 at 11:00 a.m.

Rosendo C. “Ross” Pacheco, 65, of Palestine, passed away Sunday, May 2, 2010 at East Texas Medical Center in Tyler. He was born September 8, 1944 in Pleasanton, Texas to Agulino Pacheco and Beatrice Castro Pacheco. Mr. Pacheco was of the Baptist faith.
Visitation will be held from 11:00 am to 9:00 pm, Thursday, May 6, 2010 at Watson & Sons Funeral Home in Center. Mrs. Addie L. Green, 71, longtime resident of San Augustine County, Texas, passed away, Tuesday, May 4, 2010, in San Augustine, Texas.
Addie was born to Lera (Greer) Walton and Oren Walton on October 16, 1938, in San Augustine County, Texas. She was a homemaker, and was a member of the Baptist Church.

Laura Margaret (Putnam) McLarry passed away on May 5, 2010 at Holiday Nursing Center in Center, Texas where she had resided since 2007. Mrs. McLarry was born November 27, 1916, in Sulphur Springs, Texas to Charles W. and Margaret Frances Putnam. On January 16, 1942 she married Finley McLarry in Sulphur Springs where they lived until his death in 1997.
A celebration of life for Mrs. McLarry will be held Saturday, May 8, at 1:00 p.m. at West Oaks Funeral Home, 505 S. Hillcrest Dr. in Sulphur Springs. Visitation will be Friday, May 7 from 5-8 p.m. at the funeral home.
Two daughters survive Mrs. McLarry: Carolyn Wiggins and husband Wayne of Longmont CO. and Ann Krueger and husband Clay of Center, Texas. She is further survived by five grandsons: Mark Wiggins and wife Wendy of St. Louis Park, MN; Paul WIggins and wife Debbie of Longmont, CO.; BIll Krueger and wife Beth of Norwak, CT.; Scot Krueger of Semi Valley, CA.; Tim Krueger of O'Fallon, MO and four great-grand children: Emily and Brian WIggins of Longmont, CO. and Roy and Robert Krueger of Norwalk, CT.
Her parents, her husband, two sisters, Alma Putman and Josephine McLarry and special nephew, Dan Richard McLarry, all of Sulphur Springs preceded her in death.
Mrs. McLarry worked six years as a dental assistant, nine years as financial secretary at First Baptist Church in Sulphur Springs, and 14 years as a secretary at First Baptist Church in Sulphur Springs, and 14 years as a secretary for Sulphur Springs Independent School District in the high school, junior high and Houston Elementary. She loved to paint and was a member of Hopkins County Art League and Lakes Area Arts League in Center, Texas. She enjoyed reading, sewing, gardening and crafts. She was a member of First Baptist Church Center, Texas when she died and a long-time member of First Baptist Church in Sulphur Springs, Texas. Throughout her life she was active in Baptist Women's Missionary group and taught women's Bible study classes for over 50 years.
In lieu of flowers, the family requested memorials to LifeCare Hospice; 320 North Street, Suite 311; Nacogdoches, Texas 75961.

John R. Adams, 83, of Center, passed away Sunday, May 2, 2010 at Shelby Regional Medical Center. He was born December 25, 1926 in Shelby County to Flint Adams and Georgia Sanford Adams. He was a member of the International Order of Foresters. Mr. Adams served in the 101st Airborne Division of the Army.
