Mary Grace Hughes, 66, of Center, passed away Sunday, February 27, 2011 at Nacogdoches Memorial Hospital. She was born May 7, 1944 in Center to Theron Hughes and Thelma Gathright Hughes. Ms. Hughes was a member of Hillcrest Baptist Church, and was a mother and homemaker.
Visitation will be held from 6:00 pm to 8:00 pm, Tuesday, March 1, 2011 at Watson & Sons Funeral Home in Center. Funeral services will be held at 2:00 pm, Wednesday, March 2, 2011 at Watson & Sons Chapel with Bro. Gordon Vaughn and Bro. Henry Hughes officiating. Interment will follow at Oaklawn Memorial Park in Center.

LaVida Jernigan, 90, of Tyler, passed away Thursday, February 24, 2011 at her home. She was born November 13, 1920 in Center to Robert Johnson and Mary Holland Johnson. Mrs. Jernigan was of the Baptist faith.

Ranzie Swindle, 100, of Shelbyville passed away February 24, 2011 at Shelby Regional Hospitalin Center, Texas. He was born June 9, 1910 to Elisha and Mary Swindle in Shelby County. He married Leavinsa Keeglan in 1932 and married Dorothy Chumbley in 1937.
He will lay-in-state from 11am - 12 noon, Saturday, March 5, 2011 at John D. Windham Civic Center in Center. Funeral services will be held at 12 noon at the John D. Windham Civic Center with Bro. Wille Jones officiating. Interment will follow at Bennett Chapel Cemetery, Shelbyville, Texas.

Kevin Dwayne Watts, 41 of Nacogdoches, Texas passed away February 19, 2011 in Nacogdoches, Texas. A memorial service will be held at a later date. Mr. Watts was born on January 26, 1970, in Dalhart, Texas to Louis Ronald Watts and Patricia Joy Lang.
Kevin was raised in Palinview, Texas. He had worked as a mechanic and was known to be able to fix or repair anything mechanical. He loved sports, especially football and could recite the statistics of all NFL teams.
Kevin is survived by his father, Ron Watts, of Wichita, Kansas; his mother, Patricia Lang Watts of Nacogdoches; one brother, Rodney Dean Watts of Nacogdoches; two cousins, Brittany Paige Jallite of Memphis, Tennesee and Regina Riley of Bandera, Texas; two nieces, Anna Thomason and Trina of San Antonio, Texas.

Warren G. (Chris) Christensen, 89 of Mesa, Arizona, formerly of Tenaha, passed away Thursday, February 17, 2011. He was born March 13, 1922 in Tillamook, Oregon to Fred and Lucille Christensen. He had three brothers: Carrol Christensen, C Vern Christensen, Willard M. Christensen.
While attending college at the University of Oregon, he played varsity baseball for the Oregon Ducks. On his way to Madison Square Garden for a game, the team was informed by the train conductor that Pearl Harbor had been bombed. Christensen joined the armed services and served for three years in the Philippines. Upon returning to the states, he married Fern Harrison. They lived in Tillamook, Oregon where they had twin girls. They moved to Centralia, Washington and then to Mesa, Arizona where he worked with the H.D. Lee clothing company until retirement.
After retiring from the H.D. Lee Company, Warren and Fern moved to Tenaha, Texas and established a home in the country where Warren was the happiest; especially when his daughters came to visit with the grandchildren.

James Michael Barbe, 49 of Nacogdoches, Texas passed away on Sunday, February 20, 2011 in Nacogdoches, Texas. A graveside commital service will be held on Thursday, February 24, 2011, at 4:00 pm at Mt. Herman Church of Christ Cemetery with Pastor Kyle Childress officiating.
Mr. Barbe was born on January 31, 1962, in Center, Texas to James Gibson Barbe and Bobbie Ann Bradshaw.
James graduated from Center High School in 1980. After graduation he moved to Nacogdoches to attend college and was a long time resident of Nacogdoches. He graduated from Cosmetology school and had a 22 year career in his chosen field. He was employed with Head West Salon in Nacogdoches and had a very loyal clientele. James loved spending time with family and friends. He also enjoyed many activities in his life including shopping, traveling, decorating and landscaping. He kept an immaculate home and showcase yard. James also liked cars, the newer the better. He enjoyed searching for antiques as well.
James was a kind, loving person who was known for his giving generosity. He loved his family tremendously, including doting on his numerous nieces, nephews and great-nieces and nephews. He also loved animals, he did not go long without a loving dog at his side, with "Levi" his chihuahua, being his latest canine companion. To his loving family and to his work clientele those who knew James will miss his tremendous spirit and large heart.
He is survived by his mother, Bobbie Ann Barbe, of Baytown, Texas; brother, Richard W. Barbe and wife, Connie of Chireno; a sister, Leslie Metcalf and husband, Mark of Baytown; his best friend, Anthony Allen of Nacogdoches, Texas; nieces and nephews, Laura Hendrix and husband, D.J. of Anahuac, Texas, Leah Moody and husband, Shane of Baytown and Sheila Barbe of Ashville, North Carolina; great-nieces and nephews, Daniella Brunson of Ashville, North Carolina, Sierra, Savannah and Lane Moody all of Baytown, and Lindsey and Dalton Hendrix of Anahuac, Texas. He was preceded in death by his father, James Gibson Barbe.

Funeral services for Bobby Gene Merritt Smith, 74, of Timpson, TX, will be held at 10:30 AM, Tuesday, February 22, 2011, in Taylor Funeral Home Chapel, Timpson, with Rev. Josh Walters officiating. Interment will follow in Woodlawn Cemetery, Timpson. Mr. Smith passed away Saturday, February 19, 2011, in Timpson.
Born May 9, 1936, in Timpson, TX, Bobby Smith was the son of the late Robert Hardy and Tura (Andrews) Smith. He was a graduate of Timpson High School and married Tommie Lynn Atkins on March 13, 1954, and she preceded him in death in 1983. Bobby was a planer foreman for over 40 years at Nix Forest Industries where he worked for the Tyer and Nix families. He was also a member of First Baptist Church, Timpson.
Survivors include 4 sons: Paul Merritt Smith and wife Debra of Timpson, David Gene Smith of Willis, TX, John Theodore Smith of Nacogdoches, and Mark Robert Smith and wife Kimberley of San Antonio, TX; sister Gloria “Sister” McLeod of Houston; 8 grandchildren: Michael Paul Smith, Amber Lea Smith, Christopher David Smith, Toni Lynn Smith, Sean Christopher Smith, Dorey Ann Kreiger and husband Adam, Jorden Lin Smith, and Kaley Atkins Smith; 2 great grandchildren: Triston Michael Smith, and Tatum Irene Smith. Collis Stephens, 84, of the Woods Community, passed away Friday, February 18, 2011 at Marian Place Assisted Living in Carthage, Texas.
Graveside Services will be at 3:00 p.m. on Sunday, February 20, 2011 at Woods Cemetery in Panola County with Rev. Rodney Puryear officiating. Visitation will be prior to the graveside service from 1:00 p.m. to 2:30 p.m. at the Woods New Hope Baptist Church where he was a member.
He was born May 6, 1926 in Nacogdoches County to Clyde Monroe Stephens and Lena (Hilliard) Stephens. He was a veteran of World War II and served in Korea, also. He was employed by the paper mill in Lufkin where he retired.
Mr. Stephens is survived by his wife, Ruth Baldwin Stephens of the Woods Community, foster son, Danny Joe Mott & wife, Marivel of the Woods Community, sister, LaVerne Jackson & husband, Marshall of Lufkin, sister, Laura Ann Renfro of Lufkin, brother, Billy Stephens & wife, Shirley of Lufkin, sister-in-law Fannie Watson of Tenaha and a number of nieces and nephews.

D.M. “Drewie” Bradshaw, 85, of Timpson, passed away Thursday, February 17, 2011 at Nacogdoches Medical Center. He was born January 16, 1926 in Center to Shade Thomas Bradshaw and Jessie James Walker Bradshaw. Mr. Bradshaw was a member of the Arcadia Church of Christ. He Graduated from Camp Worth High School in 1943. Mr. Bradshaw served in the Philippines for the United States Army, where he was released from duty in 1946.

Funeral services for Mr. Cecil Rex Taylor, age 88, of Carthage, TX, will be held at 10 a.m. on Friday, Feb. 18, 2011, at Jimerson-Lipsey Funeral Home Chapel with Dr. Allen Tilley officiating. Interment will follow in Restland Memorial Park near Carthage. The family will receive friends from 6-8 p.m. on Thursday at the funeral home. Mr. Taylor passed away on Tuesday morning, Feb. 15, 2011, in Carthage.
Cecil Rex Taylor was born on Nov. 19, 1922, in the Paxton Community of Shelby County, TX to Henry Cecil and Sallie Coyle Taylor. He graduated from Joaquin High School. Mr. Taylor served his country in the U.S. Army Air Corps during WWII and was honorably discharged on Nov. 4, 1945. He married Dessie Lee Settle on Jan. 24, 1946, in Center, TX and she preceded him in death on Dec. 1, 2007, after 61 years of marriage. Mr. Taylor worked for United Gas and Pennzoil for many years until his retirement in 1984. He was a member of the First Baptist Church in Carthage. Mr. Taylor was also preceded in death by two sisters, R.V. Crutchfield and Sara Shaver and one brother, Max Taylor.
Mr. Taylor is survived by two sons, Ronnie Taylor and wife Darlene of Spring and Randy Taylor and wife Kathy of Austin; five grandchildren, Lee Anne Taylor Sharpe and husband Patrick of Carthage, Kelly Taylor Simmons and husband Mike of Houston, Charlie Taylor and wife Jenna of East Bernard, Justin Taylor and wife Jessica of Dallas, and Brandon Taylor of Dallas; six great-grandchildren, Taylor, Kelsey, and Kolbey Sharpe, Pierce Randall Simmons, Canon Rex Taylor and Cailyn Ryce Taylor.
Serving as pallbearers are Brandon Taylor, Justin Taylor, Charlie Taylor, Patrick Sharpe, Mike Simmons, and Eddie Settle.

Graveside service for 1SG (Retired) John T. Gafford, 70, Lawton will be at 2:00pm Monday at Post Cemetery, Fort Sill with Chaplain Dennis King, Faith Hospice officiating.
Sergeant Gafford died Thursday at his home in Lawton.

He was born April 9, 19 40 in Center, Texas to Bert F. and Maurice (Sowell) Gafford. He married Kyong (Tina) Hwang on December 22, 19 66 in Seoul , Korea . He served in the United States Army from June 1959 until December 1984, and was proud to serve his country, retiring as a First Sergeant. He served tours in Germany , Korea , Vietnam and Fort Sill . He made Fort Sill his home. While in the Army he earned the following awards, The National Defense Service Medal, Armed Forces Expeditionary Medal, Vietnam Service Medal with three service stars, Republic of Vietnam Campaign Medal, Republic of Vietnam Gallantry Cross Unit Citation with Palm, Bronze Star Medal, Army Commendation Medal – 2, Good Conduct Medal-6, Humanitarian Service Medal, Army Service Ribbon, Overseas Service Ribbon-2, and the Non-Commissioned Officer Professional Development Ribbon-3. After his Army retirement, he worked for various contractors, but retired from I.T.T. as his final job. He saw his most important roles, as a father, husband and grandpa. He was a member of Lawton First Assembly of God Church.
He is survived by his wife Kyong (Tina) Gafford of the home, daughter & son-in-law Jeanne and Glynn Preast of Lawton , OK , son and daughter-in-law John Gafford Jr., and Jennifer of Little Elm, TX, his sister and her husband Dorice and Scott Ramsey of Houston, TX, three grandchildren, Isaac and Joshua Preast and Isis Chouchane. He is also survived by his niece Jo Lea and husband Kelly Froehlich and their children Collin and Kyndall.
He was preceded in death by his parents, and a son Kenneth Wayne Gafford.

She was a member of the Antioch Baptist Church in Minden before moving to Gregg Home in Kilgore.

Louie “Weldon” Fittz, 69, of Deweyville, beloved husband, father and grandfather, peacefully went to be with the Lord on February 12, 2011, at his home with his family, after a lengthy battle with cancer.
Funeral Services will be at 1:00 p.m. Tuesday, February 15, 2011, at First Baptist Church of Deweyville. Brother Damon Bickham and Brother Brad Bickham will be officiating. A Masonic Graveside Service will follow at Trout Creek Cemetery.
Visitation will be from 5:00-9:00 p.m. on Monday, February 14, 2011, at the church.
Weldon was born in Shelbyville, Texas on May 8, 1941, to L.G. Fittz and Delmer Snider Fittz. He graduated from Shelbyville High School and attended Stephen F. Austin College. He was a born again Christian, a member of First Baptist Church of Deweyville, and instilled his Christian faith in his family.
He was a 32nd degree Master Mason member of Sam Houston Lodge #32 in Shelbyville. He was a retired member of Local 195 Pipefitters Union and retired from Ameripol-Synpol. He was also a paramedic serving Orange County for several years, was a coordinator and instructor for Peoples Ambulance Service in Deweyville and taught at Lamar State College Orange.
Weldon was preceded in death by his mother, father, and his wife, Beverly Rhodes Fittz.
He is survived by his wife, of 23 years, Ophelia Burks Fittz of Deweyville; sister, Phyllis Wagstaff and husband, Glenn of Shreveport; children, Dean Fittz and wife, Pam of Dallas, Angela Shelton and Eric Zahlmann of Orange, Todd Cooper of Deweyville, Kimberly Smalley and husband, Josh of Bridge City, Melanie Sharpe and husband, Donny of Houston, and Scott Fittz of Dallas; 9 grandchildren; 3 great-grandchildren; and a host of family and friends who will all miss him dearly. He was looking forward to the arrival of 2 more grandchildren as well as another great-grandchild.

John A. Pate, Jr. was born December 16, 1925 in Center, Texas to John A. Pate, Sr. and Ruth Chapman Pate and went to be with his Lord on February 10, 2011.
He graduated from Timpson High School in 1943 and attended BMI in Longview, Texas. John served our country during WWII in US Army Medical Corps. He married the love of his life, Maxine Rhodes, and they were blessed with 63 years of marriage. The lived several places including Center, Longview, Daingerfield and Tulsa. He was employed by Skelly Oil and Holly Farms as an accountant. John was a part owner of Reliable Pipe in Lone Star.
In retirement, he and his wife lived in Longview for about 25 years and were members of Longview Missionary Baptist Church. He is a Master Mason and a member of the Gregg County Scottish Rite.
John is preceded in death by his parents. He is survived by his wife, two daughters and their husbands, Debbie and Dwaine Barthol of Hughes Springs and Janet and John Blake of Longview. Also two granddaughters and their husbands, Brooke and William Dannelley of Hughes Springs and Brandi and Nick Smith of Redwater; four great grandchildren, Landon, Dawson and Tessa Dannelley and Tyler Smith; one sister, Lawanda Heaberlin of Longview and several nieces and nephews.
The family will greet friends Sunday Feb. 13 at Rader Funeral Home, Longview, from 2-4PM. Funeral services will be at Rosewood Park Cemetery Mausoleum Monday Feb 14 at 10AM with Reverend Bill Voss and Reverend Nathan Rogers officiating.

Howard Johnson, 73, of Center, passed away Wednesday, February 9, 2011 at his home. He was born September 22, 1937 in Jeanrette, Louisiana to Howard Judson Johnson and Mozelle Patterson Miears. Mr. Johnson served in the US Army, and was of the Baptist faith.

Doris Massey Parker passed away February 9, 2011.
Doris was born on February 12, 1921 in Center, Texas, the first of three children born to Lola Ruth (Hunter) Massey and Johnnie Thomas Massey, who preceded her in death. Growing up in Center she demonstrated her love of horses by participating in barrel racing and being crowned Rodeo Queen. She graduated from Center High School and attended Stephen F. Austin where she was a majorette with the Lumberjack band. She then attended Massey Business College in Houston before returning to Center to work at Farmers State Bank. On June 30, 1946 she married Frank Edward Parker and they settled in Center.
Doris was first and foremost a Christian woman who loved God, her family and her friends. She joined the First Baptist Church at an early age, but upon marriage she joined the Parker family at the First Methodist Church where she was active serving on its Board of Trustees in various capacities and enjoyed teaching Sunday School, directing Vacation Bible School, presided as President of the WSCS and chaired numerous bereavement luncheons. She was a tireless volunteer for the Center Public Schools PTA, Halloween Carnival Chairman, charter member of Beta Sigma Phi, Center Garden Club and the Shelby County Historical Society.
Loving wife and mother, devoted sister and daughter, the world’s greatest “Dee Dee”, mother-in-law, loyal friend, unparalleled homemaker, Doris was all of these things and much more to her family and friends.
She enjoyed decorating her home, Christmas at Parker Pines, summers in Vail, Colorado, fishing, having afternoon coffee with her friends, cooking pies and all things beautiful. Doris was the happiest when surrounded by her family as she always said they were her hobby.
Doris was preceded in death by her husband of sixty-one years, F.E. Parker, her sister Johnnie Ruth Massey Brown, her brother, Cecil Edgar Massey and her parents. She is survived by her loving and grateful children, Pam Parker Wall (William) of Denver, Colorado, Patti Parker Peterson (James) of Fort Worth and Frank E. Parker, Jr. (Cheryl) of Dallas. She left behind seven grandchildren who will miss “Dee Dee”, her irresistible cooking and her unconditional love. They are William Harrison Wall III (Anna) of Denver, Colorado, Claiborn Massey Peterson (Katie) of Dallas, Treven Parker Wall (Alison) of Baltimore, Maryland, Pamela Peterson Lancaster (Daniel) of Fort Worth, Winter Patricia Wall of Denver, Colorado, Frank E. Parker, III and Bolt Houston Parker of Dallas plus seven great grandchildren Adelyn, Willow, Pax, Peter and Ian Wall, Kate and Caroline Peterson.
The family will receive friends Friday, February 11, 2011 from 6 to 7:30 in the evening at Watson and Sons Funeral Home in Center. A graveside service is scheduled for 2 pm on Saturday February 12, 2011 at Oaklawn Memorial Cemetery with Reverend Joel McMahon officiating.

Norma Jean Shamblin, 83, of Friendswood passed away February 6, 2011. She was born December 12, 1927 in Center, Texas to Minnie and Dewey Randolph Tyer. She was a long time resident of La Porte before moving to Friendswood. Norma was a member of the Beta Sigma Phi.
She is survived by her daughters Milta Whitman and husband Jack, Leezan Grun and husband Eddie, grandchildren Angie Vegas and husband Luke, Blake Morgan and wife Jennifer, Chelsie Calhoun and husband Chris, Dallas Smith and wife Andrea, Brandon Smith and Araka, and great grandchildren Jacob, Chynna, Joshua, Zachary, Lane, Koehl, Jodi, Lyla, Ethan, and Connor.

Mrs. Margaret Ann (Mayfield) Malone, age 77, entered into rest in San Augustine, Texas, Friday, February 4, 2011, following a brief illness. She was born October 29, 1933, in Nacogdoches County, Texas.
Margaret was the executive Secretary for the Forestry department at Stephen F. Austin State University for many years. She married Sam Malone and the couple started the San Augustine and Hemphill/Pineland Rambler newspapers in San Augustine and Hemphill until the couple sold the newspapers many years later, and then operated a printing company in San Augustine until Sam Malone's death. Sam referred to Margaret as his "Lady Margaret" and they were active in many organizations across the state. Margaret was onetime president of the Texas Outdoors Women's Press Association and a member of the Beta Sigma Phi sorority in Nacogdoches, Texas.
Margaret was a resident of Twin Lakes Care Center, San Augustine, Texas.
She was preceded in death by her parents, N.Q. and Glayds (West) Mayfield of Nacogdoches, Texas, her husband, Sam Malone of San Augustine, a brother, Joe M. Mayfield of Nacogdoches.
She is survived by a sister, Madge (Mayfield) Pitts of Westlake, Lousiana, Stepson, Mike Malone and stepdaughter Samye Johnson, both of San Augustine. Also by a host of nieces and nephews.
Ashes will be interred at the Christ Church Episcopal in San Augustine, Saturday, February 19, 2011, at 2:00 p.m.

Mrs. Winnie Davis Greer Markle, 101, longtime resident of San Augustine passed away late Wednesday evening, February 2, 2011 in San Augustine. Winnie was born to Mary Samantha (Powell) Greer and Robert Vance Greer on December 22, 1909, in San Augustine County, Texas. She was a homemaker and a member of the Presbyterian Church. Winnie married W.H. (Dutch) Markle in 1927 and eventually settled in Port Arthur where Dutch worked for the Texas Company. Twin daughters were born in 1931. During WWII Dutch served in Europe while the family lived across the country. A son was born after the war. Over the next several years while working for Texaco, the family lived in Port Arthur, Porta la Cruz, Venezuela, Lockport, Illinois and Casper, Wyoming. In 1970, Winnie and Dutch returned to Port Arthur where they retired and divided their time living in Port Neches and San Augustine. Winnie moved permanently to San Augustine after Dutch's death and lived next door to her sister Nell Gillman.

Born July 4, 1936, in Grand Saline, TX, Geneva Higginbotham was the daughter of the late Robert Jones and Lorretter Clark Murphy. After graduating from high school, she attended Tyler Junior College and was an executive secretary in several area banks. She and Richard Vernon Higginbotham were married May 4, 1956. She was also a member of First Baptist Church of Timpson.
Geneva not only was a loving mother to her children Lisa and Ricky, but also was an international mom who welcomed 13 exchange students from 8 countries into her home. She and Vernon provided each of them with a wonderful experience of living in the United States.
Survivors include her husband Vernon Higginbotham of Timpson; daughter Lisa Higginbotham of Shreveport, LA; daughter-in-law Katrina Higginbotham of Lake Dallas, TX; granddaughter Carmen Higginbotham and Michael Kramer of Humble, TX; grandson Kamren Higginbotham and wife Christie of Longview, TX; great granddaughters Kelsey and Kilynn Higginbotham of Longview and Kristian Kramer of Humble; and 3 brothers: Alvin Murphy of Colorado, Calvin Murphy of Tyler, and Dalvin Murphy of Tyler. In addition to her parents, Geneva was preceded in death by son Ricky Higginbotham.

Walter Rainbolt, Jr., 44 of Center, passed away Wednesday, February 2, 2011 at Shelby Regional Medical Center. He was born March 13, 1966 in Nacogdoches to Walter Clarence Rainbolt, Sr. and Laura Bounds Rainbolt.
Walter was a 1984 graduate of Center High School. Over the years, he had been involved in many different business endeavors. He was currently managing Timpson Tire Company in Timpson. Walter was a member of Shelby County Cookers, and founded the National Wild Turkey Federation in Shelby County. He was a member of Center Christian Church.
Visitation will be held from 5:00 pm to 8:00 pm, Friday, February 4, 2011 at Watson and Sons Funeral Home in Center. Funeral services will be held at 2:00 pm, Saturday, February 5, 2010 at the First Baptist Church in Center with Bro. Bruce James and Bro. Chris Collins officiating. Interment will follow at Oaklawn Memorial Park in Center.
Pallbearers will be Chris Mayfield, Bruce Jones, Larry Horn, Randy Gilespie, Jonathan Wulf, Adam Ray, Steve Tinkle, Don Wheeler, and Jordan Horn. Honorary pallbearers will be the Shelby County Cookers, Carter Ray Garner, Murray Mathews, J.B. Raymond, Mitch Davis, Roscoe McSwain, Prentis Hay, Tim Guenther and Kelly Thompkins.

Mr. Bernon Howell, age 86, entered into rest January 30, 2011, in Lufkin, Texas. He was born October 6, 1924, in San Augustine County, Texas to the late Willie Justin Howell and Vera (Sanders) Howell.
Mr. Howell worked as a mechanic and drove the bus for many years for the San Augustine Independent School District. He was a member of Shiloh Missionary Baptist Church.
He is survived by his daughters Gayla Hoffman of San Augustine and Pamela Hammack and husband Troy of San Augustine; grandchildren Allen and Jason Hoffman, Samantha and husband Mike Dorsett, Tabitha and husband Granvil Fountain, and Tracey Hammack; great-grandchildrne William Horne, Gabriel Hoffman, Tyler Fountain, Mason Fountain, Charlie Fountain, and Jenna Dorsett; sister Wilma and husband Joe Cleckley of San Augustine.
Furneral services will be held Wednesday, February 2, 2011, 10:00 a.m., Shiloh Missionary Baptist Church, with Bro. Doug Howell officiating. Burial will be in the Shiloh Cemetery.
Pallbearers will be Tracey Hammack, Granvil Fountain, Mike Dorsett, Darrenn Fountain, Joe Moore, Robert Byley Jr. and Ben Byley.
