Jerry Lloyd Waller, 66, of Center, passed away Tuesday, March 29, 2011 at Memorial Specialty Hospital in Lufkin.

Graveside Services will be 2:00 p.m. Friday, April 1, 2011 at Neuville Cemetery. Visitation will be Thursday, March 31, 2011 from 5:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. at Mangum Funeral Home.

He was born July 25, 1944 in Shelby County to Granville Columbus and Luna Elizabeth (Parker) McSwain Waller. He served in the US Army. He was a member of the Neuville Baptist Church.

He is preceded in death by his Parents, Granville and Luna Waller, Brothers, Billy Ray Waller, Earl Lee Waller, Harvey Dell Waller and Calvin Vernon Waller.

Leo Edward Greathouse, 77, of Joaquin, passed from this life on Wednesday, March 30, 2011 at Twin Lakes Nursing Center in San Augustine surrounded by his loving family.

Leo was born to the late William and Nellie Greathouse on August 29, 1933 in DeKalb, Texas. He graduated from DeKalb High School in 1950 and received a degree in Accounting from the University of Houston in 1960. Leo served our country in the Army in the early 1950’s and was stationed in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania where he met his wife Carol. They married September 1, 1956.

He worked in the natural gas and pipeline industries in the accounting department, living in Chicago, Illinois and Salt Lake City, Utah. Leo returned to Houston and retired in the late 1980’s and moved back to East Texas where he went into the chicken and cattle business.

Visitation will be held from 12:00 pm to 2:00 pm, Saturday, April 2, 2011 at Watson and Sons Funeral Home in Center. Funeral services will be held at 2:00 pm, Saturday, April 2, 2011 at Watson and Sons Chapel with Bro. Frank Thompson and Bro. Grady Fountain officiating. At Leo’s request, he will be cremated and his ashes will be spread at his son’s ranch in Joaquin.

Charles Buron Robison, 92, of Center, passed away Wednesday, March 30, 2011 at his home.  He was born August 13, 1918 in Shelby County to Charles Buron Robison, Sr. and Tommy Lois Brittian Robison.  Mr. Robison was a pioneer chicken farmer, having been only the second to build chicken houses in Shelby County.  He was a member of the Sam Samford Masonic Lodge #149 and First Baptist Church in Center.

Visitation will be held from 6:00 pm to 8:00 pm, Thursday, March 31, 2011 at Watson & Sons Funeral Home in Center.  Funeral services will be held at 2:00 pm, Friday, April 1, 2011 at Watson & Sons Chapel with Bro. Kenneth Verner officiating. Interment will follow at Fairview Cemetery in Center.

Jeremy Nathaniel Mathis, 26, of Nacogdoches, passed away on March 27, 2011. He was born June 14, 1984, in Ft. Worth, Texas, to Nancy (Capps) and Gary Mathis.

Jeremy was a member of Grace Bible Church and PHI Theta Kappa Honor Society. He taught high school math at Shelbyville ISD.

Charlotte Sumner Strickland Davis, 89, formerly of Huxley, passed away March 19, 2011. She was born November 8, 1921 in Bowling Green, Kentucky, to Minnie Ella Fair and Phillip Alonzo Strickland. She was married November 2, 1940, to John Hardy Davis, with whom she enjoyed a lifelong marriage. They were married 62 years; John preceded her in death June 5, 2002.

She is survived by their three children, Daphne Davis German, John Sumner Davis and wife, Sharon, and Linda Louise Chamberlain; and daughter-in-law Euvonne Davis Cooper.

Surviving grandchildren are Charles "Chuck" Milner and wife, Beth, Kathy Darden and husband, Paul, Mary Colliflower and husband, Mark, Charlotte Stanaland and husband, Larry, John W. Services for Mrs. Davis were held Wednesday, March 23, 2011, at Forest Park Lawndale Funeral Home and Cemetery in Houston, Texas

Harold Osborne, 70 of Center, passed away Saturday, March 26, 2011 at his home. He was born October 1, 1940 in Bicknall, Indiana to Thomas and Ruth Elizabeth Ackerman Osborne. Harold worked and retired from Southwestern Bell Telephone Company with 37 years of service. He was currently serving as Shelby County Justice of the Peace Pct 1, having been elected to office in 2005. He was a member of the White Rock Missionary Baptist Church. Mr. Osborne served in the United States Marine Corp from 1959-1963. Through the years Harold played a key role in many fraternal organizations starting in 1973 when he joined and was the Master Mason of the Newbern Lodge #97 and served as Past Master, was the Secretary since 1994, the District Deputy Grand Master in 1998 and received the Golden Trowel Award. He joined the Yorkrite Chapter #125 in 1973 where he was the Past Grand High Priest of the Yorkrite chapter, Deputy Grand High priest and the Secretary. In the Yorkrite Council #73 he held the positions of Secretary and District Deputy Grand Master. In the Yorkrite Commandery #46 he was the Commander. Harold was the Club President and Secretary of the Shriners. He also served as the Past Patron and Treasurer of the Order of the Eastern Star Newbern Chapter #1135.

Visitation will be held from 6:00 pm to 8:00 pm, Monday, March 28, 2011 at Watson & Sons Funeral Home in Center. Funeral services will be held at 11:00am, Tuesday, March 29, 2011 at Watson & Sons Funeral Home in Center with Bro. Keith Rose officiating. Interment to follow at White Rock Cemetery in Center.

Sybil Lovell Heath, 100, passed away on Friday, Feb. 18, 2011. She was a native of Shelbyville, Texas, and had been a resident of Smithfield, Va., since 1999 under the care of her youngest daughter, Kaye H. Brown. She enjoyed her final years residing in the James River Convalescent Center in Newport News, Va.

Sybil was an educator and served in numerous school districts from Shelbyville to Houston, Texas. Sybil earned a bachelor of Arts Degree from Houston-Tilletson University in Austin, Texas, and was a member of Sigma Gamma Rho Sorority. In addition to her work in education, Sybil was also a Fashion Designer and a certified Master Gardner.

Sybil was married to the late Horace Lincoln Heath, Ph.D.; the first African American to be enrolled in the University of Texas. Sybil was preceded in death by three brother and three sisters.

She is survived by one sister, Maudine 'Doc' McClelland (Willie T.) of Houston, Texas; two daughters, Shirley H. Smith (Travis) of Rio Vista, Calif., and Kaye H. Brown (James) of Smithfield, Va.; four grandchildren, Monica Brown-Lipscomb (Vernon) of Bowie, Md., Steven B. Smith (Kathryn) of Elk Grove, Calif., Suzanne Smith Andrews (Lawrence) of Dallas, Texas, and James B. Brown III of Washington, D.C.; two great-grandchildren, Dyland Lipscomb of Bowie, Md., and Alexandria Roquemore of Dallas, Texas; and a host of loving relatives and friends.

A viewing for family and friends was held on Thursday, Feb. 24, 2011 and the family received friends at Pretlow Chapman Funeral Home at 658 Main St., Smithfield, VA 23430. A celebration of life was held at 11 a.m. Friday, Feb. 25, 2011, at Main Street Baptist Church, 517 Main St., Smithfield, VA 23430 intermit followed the service at Hickory Grove Memorial Cemetery in Surry, Va.

William (Bill) Ware DuBose, 81, of Tenaha, passed away Friday, March 18, 2011 at St. James House in Baytown. He was born April 26, 1929 on Ware Hill, just outside of Tenaha. He was one of eleven children born to Jennings Osward DuBose and Reba Ray Ware DuBose. Mr. DuBose proudly served his country in the Army. His careers included construction work for Brown and Root and owner/operator of commercial trucks.

Visitation will be held from 6:00 pm to 8:00 pm, Monday, March 21, 2011 at Watson & Sons Funeral Home in Center. Funeral services will be held at 2:00 pm, Tuesday, March 22, 2011 at Watson & Sons Chapel with Mack Anthony, Jr. officiating. Interment will follow at Woods Cemetery in Panola County.

Joel William "Cal" Birmingham was born December 22, 1929 in Wharton, TX to Frank & Julia (Barrera) Birmingham and passed away on Tuesday, March 15, 2011.

He served in the U. S. Navy during the Korean War. Cal loved the outdoors, especially, fishing, hunting and camping.

He was preceded in death by his brothers and sister, Timothy Lee Birmingham, Daisy Mae Humphries, Charles Edward Birmingham, Frank Leon Birmingham and Gilbert Al Birmingham.

Barrett was born June 6, 1979, in Fort Worth to Joy Ann and Robert Havran. Barrett attended Fort Worth Country Day from kindergarten through 12th grade, graduating in 1998. He excelled in academics, theater, football and track. He was elected the 1997 Homecoming King. In both football and track, he was selected captain and most valuable athlete. Earning a scholarship to the University of Texas at Austin in track and field, he excelled as the ninth-ranked decathlete in school history. In 2001, he ranked 18th in the nation. While at the university, he was the track and field captain, a four-year decathlete letterman and a member of Delta Tau Delta Fraternity. He was awarded the Lan Hewlett Award, given to the athlete with the highest cumulative grade point average of any graduating letterman. He was named to the Big XII First All-Academic Team, as well as the UT Athletic Director's Honor Roll each of his four years of college. He also served as UT national coordinator and representative to the national convention of the American Marketing Association. Barrett graduated with a BBA from the McCombs School of Business in May 2002, ranking in the top 15 percent of his UT class.

He then attended the Southern Methodist University Dedman School of Law. While there, he was a member of the National Championship White Collar Crime Mock Trial Team and was named top advocate of the competition in Washington, D.C. During law school, he was SMU's On–Campus Mock Trial Champion, the Locke Liddell & Sapp Negotiation Winner, a member of the SMU National Negotiation Team, and a two-time member of and a regional finalist on the American Trial Lawyers Mock Trial Team. He was a representative to the Student Bar Association, was a member of the school voting council, was named as the SMU Outstanding Advocate, and was elected to the Order of the Barristers, Master Level. After graduating with a Juris Doctor in May 2006, Barrett was admitted to the Texas Bar in 2006.

During his academic career at SMU, Barrett worked for Sommerman & Quesada, LLP and coached at both St. Mark's and the Hockaday Schools of Dallas. After graduation, he continued to work for S&Q, becoming very active in the Dallas legal community. He was a member of the Dallas Bar Association and was active in the Dallas Association of Young Lawyers, being elected to its Foundation and Leadership Class and serving as co-chair of the Ask-A-Lawyer Committee. He also taught Mock Trial courses and coached the Mock Trial Team at SMU. He was voted Outstanding Coach of the Year by the SMU Board of Advocates in 2009 and was selected as an associate member of the Higginbotham American Inn of Court.

Barrett recently fulfilled his lifelong dreams of returning to Fort Worth to make his home and of becoming active in the city he loved. He was employed in seasoned loan acquisitions at Doss Knight & Associates/Texas Bank and was the principal of Havran Law PC. He served on the board of Big Brothers Big Sisters of North Texas, where he was a devoted Big Brother. He was on the United Way Income Council, and a member of University Christian Church, Downtown Fort Worth Rotary Club, Colonial Country Club, the Fort Worth Club, Ridotto Club, Steeplechase and the UT Ex Letterman's Association. At Texas Wesleyan School of Law, he was currently teaching classes in trial advocacy/techniques and working with the Mock Trial team.

Barrett enjoyed water skiing and spending time boating with his family and friends on Lake Granbury. Two of Barrett's special avocations were UT football and coaching young athletes. His friends and loved ones will miss his smile, his dancing, his intelligence, his energy, his competitive spirit, his dedication, his kind heart and his love for his family, friends and community.

Claxton Yeager, 84, of Center, passed away Tuesday, March 15, 2011 in Tyler.  He was born March 28, 1926 in Nacogdoches to Alvin C. Yeager and Lena Smith Yeager.  Mr. Yeager retired with 43 years service from Otis Elevator Company. He was a member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. Mr. Yeager was also a member of Walter M. Pierson Masonic Lodge #1339 in Houston.

Mildred Hilton Chandler was born October 9, 1924 in Haslam, Texas to Wightman and Virgie Powdrill Hilton. She passed away at the age of 86 years in Columbus, Texas where she had resided for three years.

She was a member of the First United Methodist Church, BETA SIGMA PHI and a life member of the Order of Eastern Star. She was a wonderful, loving, wife, daughter, mother, grandmother and friend.

Sarah J. Palmer, 81, of Deweyville, passed away Tuesday, March 8, 2011 at the Gulf Health Care Center in Port Arthur. A gathering of family and friends for a time of reflection will be from 2:00 P.M. until 9:00 P.M. Friday, March 11, 2011 at the United Pentecostal Church in Deweyville. Services of life celebration will be at 2:00 P.M. Saturday, March 12, 2011 at the church. Officiating will be Reverend Darrell Orange and assisting will be Reverend Michael Orange. Rite of Committal and Interment will follow services where she will be laid to rest next to her husband in the Deweyville Cemetery in Deweyville. Born on May 29, 1929 in Center, Texas to her parents, John Wilburn and Isabell (Eddings) Wilburn, she was a resident of Deweyville since 1970, she worked as the head cook in the cafeteria for the Deweyville I. S. D. and was a member of the United Pentecostal Church in Deweyville. Mrs. Palmer was a loving wife, mother, grandmother, sister and friend to many. She enjoyed the gardening of vegetables and flowers and spending time in the outdoors and with her family. Mrs. Palmer will also be remembered as a person who helped others and for her cooking, her family will fondly remember her chicken and dumplings and her chicken and dressing.

Greeting her at heaven’s gate and preceding her in death are her parents; her husband, Vernon Palmer and her nine brothers and sisters.

Those who will most cherish her memory are her daughter, Norma Guidry of Deweyville; her son, Billy McMahon of Leakesville, Mississippi; her granddaughters, Ramona, Jenise and husband, Mike, Janice and husband, Jerry and Mandy and husband, Brian; her great grandchildren, Julie, Devon, Sabrina, Justin, Eric, Jerry, Colby, Jared and Tori. Mrs. Palmer is also survived by numerous nieces, nephews and extended family.

Born December 15, 1939, in Center, TX, Barbara Stephenson was the daughter of the late Pleas Wright and Charlcie Edna (Goodman) Watkins. On April 13, 1955, she and Marlin Joe Stephenson were married in Center, TX, and he preceded her in death December 30, 2001. Barbara “Jeff” was a loving wife, mother and homemaker and a Jehovah’s Witness.

Survivors include daughter Lisa Stephenson of Gary; sister Dixie Watkins of Gary; half-brother Tom Steel of California; and a host of nieces and nephews, great nieces and nephews, and great great nieces and nephews.

In addition to her parents and husband Joe Stephenson, Barbara “Jeff” Stephenson was preceded in death by daughter Teresa Stephenson and sister Billie Jean Crump.

John Paul Sanford, 89, of Center, passed away Thursday, March 3, 2011 at Holiday Nursing Home.

Services will be 2:00 p.m. Sunday, March 6, 2011 at Mangum Funeral Home Chapel with Bro. Larry Byrd officiating. Burial will follow Borders Cemetery. Visitation will be Saturday, March 5, 2011 from 4:00 p.m. until 7:00 p.m. at Mangum Funeral Home.

He was born January 4, 1922 in Shelby County to John Henry and Viola May (Borders) Sanford. He was a member of the Neuville Baptist Church where he served as a deacon. He served in the US Marines.

He is preceded in death by his Parents, John Henry and Viola May (Borders) Sanford, Wife, Gladys Sanford, Daughter, Marion Jean Burnett and Son-in-law, Dean New, 13 Brothers and Sisters, Rufus Sanford, Ervin Sanford, Worthy Vernon Sanford, Edith, Arlon Otis Sanford, John Boyd (Jake) Sanford, Mertice Odell, Loniel Clayton Sanford, Aidron Henry Sanford, Brealon Allen Sanford, William Frank Sanford, Elroy Sanford and Ray Sanford.

Shirley Mae Rayson Rogers, 63 of Center, passed away Wednesday, March 2, 2011 in Nacogdoches. She was born September 24, 1947 in Panola County to Marvin Rayson and Suda Ramsey Rayson. Mrs. Rogers was employed as a Teacher's Aide with Shelbyville ISD. She was a member of the Carroll Chapel C.M.E. Church.

Visitation will be held from 6:00pm to 8:00pm, Saturday, March 5, 2011 at Watson & Sons Funeral Home in Center. Funeral services will be held at 1:00pm, Sunday, March 6, 2011 at First Baptist Church in Center with Pastor E.L. Lockett officiating. Interment will follow at the Walker Cemetery in Carthage.

Pallbearers will be Jimmy Lister, Tommy Gardner, Tommy Rodgers, Clyde Hewitt, Jack Whiting and Keith Byndom.
