Shirley Jean Parrish Cox, 74, of Nacogdoches passed away Friday, April 27, 2012, at a local hospital.

Shirley was born March 31, 1938, in Nacogdoches County to James Bernice Parrish and Verna Dine Cordova Parrish. She was a lifelong area resident and faithful wife and mother to her family.

She was married to Edward Paul Cox on July 7, 1955.

Survivors include her husband of almost 57 years, Edward Paul Cox of Nacogdoches; daughters, Paula Jean Cox, Sandra “Sondra” Lynn Cox Rogers and husband Travis, and Carolyn Sue Cox Martin, all of Nacogdoches; granddaughters, Stephanie Ann Fonville Griffith of Nacogdoches and Jennifer Lynn Egle of Austin; a grandson, Joshua Chad Martin of Tennessee; great-grandsons, Christopher Grant Morrow of Nacogdoches and Blake Adam Morrow of Mesquite; sister, Gwen Stephens of Nacogdoches; and brothers, Joe Parrish of Nacogdoches, Aaron Parrish and wife Pat of Houston, and Eddie Parrish and wife Erma Sue of Magnolia.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by a son, Gary Paul Cox; and a brother, Stephen Allen Parrish.

Funeral services will be held at 1:00 p.m. Monday, April 30, 2012, at Cason Monk-Metcalf Sunset Chapel in Nacogdoches with Chaplain Richard Harris officiating. Interment will follow at Sunset Memorial Park in Nacogdoches.

Visitation will be held from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m. Sunday, April 29, 2012.

Martha Beatriz Acevedo-Chan, age 38 of Joaquin, Texas passed away, Friday, April 27, 2012 in Joaquin, Texas.

Jerry W. Permenter, 64 of Hamilton, AL, formerly of Center, passed away Wednesday, April 18, 2012 at the Marion Regional Medical Center-Hamilton, AL. He was born in Shreveport, LA on Monday, January 26, 1948 to William Lee and Betty Carolyn Perkins Permenter. A graveside memorial service will be held at 11:00 a.m., Wednesday, April 25, 2012 at Pleasant Ridge Cemetery. Burial in Pleasant Ridge Cemetery. Bro. Todd Clippard will officiate. He was preceded in death by his father, William Lee Permenter.

Shirley Ann Bradshaw, 68, passed away on April 24, 2012, born in Burton, TX but called Houston home and was a 1962 graduate of Lutheran High South. She was a devoted wife, mother, sister, grandmother and friend to many. Shirley was preceded in death by her husband, Jon Bradshaw, her father and mother, two brothers, one nephew and two grandchildren.

She was survived by son Michael, daughters Jonna Prodoehl and Dena Jones, brother Glenn Williford, sister Delores Langston, brother Wesley Baylor, brother-in-law Joe Bradshaw, four grandchildren, and many other family and friends.

Visitation will be Thursday, April 26th from 6 – 8 p.m. at Klein Funeral Home. Funeral services will be Friday, April 27th at 2 p.m. at Klein Funeral Home.

Bill F. Griffin, Jr., 81, of Tenaha, Texas, passed away Wednesday, April 25, 2012, at Marian Place in Carthage, Texas. He was born January 2, 1931, in Lufkin, Angelina County, Texas, to Bill F. Griffin, Sr. and Rena Belle Rice Griffin. Mr. Griffin was a member of the First Baptist Church in Tenaha, Texas, where he served as a deacon and taught the Men’s Bible Class for over 18 years. He graduated from South Texas College of Law, Houston, Texas, and practiced law in Shelby County, Texas, for 50 years. He was a Fellow of the State Bar Foundation and a sustaining member of the Association of Trial Lawyers of America.

Visitation will be held from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m., Friday, April 27, 2012, at Watson & Sons Funeral Home in Center, Texas. Funeral services will be held at 10:00 a.m., Saturday, April 28, 2012, at the First Baptist Church in Tenaha, Texas, with Pastor Russ Atwood officiating. Mae Deanne Blake, wife of retired Senator Roy Blake, was born Sept.14, 1931, in Daingerfield, Texas, passed away peacefully on April 24, 2012, in her home.

Mae Deanne was the daughter of Bill Goodwin and Edna Mae Harwood. She moved to San Augustine when she was 5-years-old. She attended San Augustine High School and moved to Nacogdoches where she completed her senior year, and graduated from Demonstration School, which was part of Stephen F. Austin State Teachers College. She attended Stephen F. Austin where she met and later married Roy Blake on June 28, 1949.

Mae Deanne “Tootie” Blake was a member of the First Methodist Church, Nacogdoches, and a member of the Open Door Sunday School Class.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Bill and Mae Goodwin and her twin sister Billie Jean Tucker.

Survivors include her husband Roy Blake, sisters in law, Catherine Golemon, Faye Blake and Nell Blake. Her children are Martha Muckleroy and husband Steve, Roy Blake, Jr. and wife Jocelyn, Kaki Nelson and husband Ricky, Ben Blake, Mary Ann Beckendorf and husband Michael. Her grandchildren are Ann Sheppard and husband Zac, Blake Chamness, Scott Muckleroy and wife Kathryn, Matt Muckleroy and wife Loulia, Franci Blake, R.M. Blake, Catherine Blake, and Austin Beckendorf. She is also survived by many nieces and nephews. Mae Deanne will always be remembered as a loving and caring wife, mother and grandmother.

Funeral service for John Edward “Johnney” Sifford, 72, of Center, TX, will be held at 2:00 PM, Friday, April 27, 2012, in Taylor Funeral Home Chapel, Timpson, TX, with Bro. Justin Coburn officiating. Visitation will be 1:00 – 2:00 PM, Friday, before the service at Taylor Funeral Home. A family interment will follow on Johnney’s property. Mr. Sifford passed away April 23, 2012, in Shelby County, Texas.

Born March 5, 1940, in Pollok, Texas, John Edward Sifford was the son of the late John Wesley and Vivian (Veil) Sifford. He was a graduate of Hudson High School and retired after over 30 years with the Texas Department of Transportation. He was a member of the National Rifle Association and enjoyed woodworking, gardening, and playing his bass guitar.

Survivors include his daughters Chaunte’ Sifford and Misti Sifford, both of Center; and 3 grandchildren: Mason Peterson of Elysian Fields, TX, Maci Sifford of Center, and Mavian Sifford of Center. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his sister Sudie Bell Oates.

Interment will follow in Timpson Missionary Baptist Church Cemetery. Mrs. Crawford passed away April 23, 2012, in Tyler, TX.

Born March 14, 1924, in Ulan, OK, Audrey Imodine Crawford was the daughter of the late Claude and Belle (Brown) Harrelson. She and Roy Samuel Crawford were married April 6, 1940, in Indianola, OK. Mrs. Crawford was a loving homemaker caring for her husband, children, and grandchildren. Her great and great great grandchildren brought much joy to her life. She was also a member of Timpson Missionary Baptist Church.

Surivors include her husband Roy Crawford, Sr. of Timpson; son Roy Crawford, Jr. of Whitney, TX; daughters Betty Eldredge and husband Bro. Sammy Eldredge of Timpson and Audrey Louise Koiner and husband Richard of Clarksville, TX; 7 grandchildren: Lisa Thompson, Stephanie Harris, Jeffrey Crawford, Cindy Rhodes, Sandy Jones, Mike Koiner, and Nancy Lawson; 11 great grandchildren; and 6 great great grandchildren.

John Wesley Holt Sr., age 64, passed away early Monday, April 23, 2012 at Pine Grove Nursing Center after a short battle with cancer. He was born June 8, 1947, in Center to Buren Wesley Holt and Idell Ross Holt and was a lifelong resident of Center. In August of 1968, he married the love of his life, Cathy Scott Holt and the two have been together ever since. He was a licensed barber since 1969 and owned and operated Holt’s Barber Shop on Hurst Street in Center. Prior to that, he worked at Hallmark Center Fixture Operations (previously Center Plywood) for over twenty years and cut hair part time. He was a member of Center Church of the Nazarene.

Visitation will be held from 6:00 PM to 8:00 PM, Tuesday, April 24, 2012 at Watson & Sons Funeral Home in Center. Bro. Gene Kirkley, 85, of Center, passed away Sunday, April 22, 2012 at Shelby Regional Medical Center.  He was born December 25, 1926 in Shelby County to A. Rex Kirkley and Anna Hearne Kirkley.  He graduated from LSU with a degree in Forestry and was a member of Sigma Chi Fraternity.  Bro. Kirkley was an ordained Baptist minister, a retired rural mail carrier, and a newspaper columnist and radio host for “East Texas Outdoors.”  Bro. Kirkley served in leadership of many civic organizations in Center & Shelby County.  He was a avid hunter, fisherman, rancher and cowboy.

Mildred Green, 86, a resident of Morgan City went to be with our Lord and Savior on Friday, April 20, 2012.

Services will be 2:00 p.m. Monday, April 23, 2012 at Mangum Funeral Home Chapel. Burial will follow at Pleasant Hill Cemetery in Huxley. Visitation will be Sunday, April 22, 2012 until 8:00 p.m.

Mildred was born in Dallas, Texas in 1926 and remained in Texas until moving to Louisiana in 1994. Mildred was a loving mother, grandmother, and great grandmother. In her younger days she loved working in her yard, antique shopping, and cooking. All that knew Mildred will miss her storytelling of her four children, of whom she was so very proud. Mildred will be sadly missed and lovingly remembered by her children and by all the people whose lives she touched.

Ellen Jeanene Vines Maxwell, age 71, of Spring, Texas, passed away on April 3, 2012 in Spring.

Memorial services for her were held on April 6, 2012 at Spring Baptist Church, her church home for a number of years. The service was officiated by Rev. Lucian Stohler.

Ellen was born on August 28, 1940, in Sexton, Texas to Kit Vines and Lola Williamson Vines. Her childhood years were spent in Center, Texas. While here, she was a member of First Baptist Church, attended Center schools, and was a CHS graduate from the Class of 1958.

Survivors of Ellen are her husband of 45 years, Wayne Maxwell of Spring, her sons, John Alan Maxwell and James Byron Maxwell and his wife, Michelle. Grandchildren are Lindsey Kay Maxwell, Bryce Alan Maxwell, Heath David Maxwell, and Colin Douglas Maxwell. Other survivors are a sister, Shirley Askew of Center; a nephew, Robert McDonald of Center; a niece, Donna Strickland of Palestine; and other nieces and nephews.

Jo Ann Tippett, age 81, of Nacogdoches passed away Easter Sunday, April 8, 2012, at an area hospital.

Mrs. Tippett was born Aug. 24, 1930, in Detroit, Michigan.

Jo Ann was a member of First Christian Church. She graduated from Texas Woman's University in Denton and had lived in Nacogdoches since 1985. Her hobbies included gardening, sewing, reading and travel. She enjoyed participating in several social and church related groups.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Bob Tippett, on Easter Sunday in 1995.

Survivors: a son, Tim Tippett; and a daughter, Diana Davis.

Jackie Michael Hughes, 69, of Joaquin, passed away March 30, 2012 in Val Verde County. He was born January 12, 1943 in Center to Jeffrey Milton Hughes and Lillie Mae Peace Hughes. He was a member of Deer Park Masonic Lodge #1362. Mr. Hughes was a machinist at Baker/Hughes Tool, where he retired after many years of service. He founded INSTREK, a company that developed and designed many medical instruments that are still being used today, as well as many products for the hunting industry. Mr. Hughes loved the outdoors and made a number of hunting trips to Africa, Alaska, and many other places in the United States. He enjoyed spending time fishing and hunting with his grandchildren.

Silas Walter (S. W.) Carter, age 86, of Shelbyville, Texas went home to be with the Lord on April 5, 2012 following a battle with cancer.

Funeral Services will be at 2:00pm on Saturday, April 7, 2012 at Watson and Son’s Funeral Home Chapel in Center. Burial will follow at Carrolltown Cemetery. Officiating will be Rev. Rob Merriman and Rev. Gordon Vaughn.

Visitation will be Friday, April 6, 2012 from 6:00 P.M. to 8:00 P.M. at Watson and Son’s Funeral Home. Pallbearers are John Butts, Buddy Hodge, J. P. Dobbs, George Warren, Larry Warren, and Mac Warren. Honorary Pallbearers are James Powell and the Board of Directors of Deep East Texas Electric Coop: Paul Alexander, John Childs, Ronnie Greer, Mike Lee, George Martin, Jimmie Poplin, Tommy Smith, William A. Speights, and Joe B. Wooten.

S. W. was born on July 10, 1925 at Camp Brittain, Texas that was a part of Pickering Lumber Company. His parents were Smith L. and Della Ballard Carter. He graduated valedictorian from Shelbyville High School, and he attended the University of Houston and earned a Bachelor’s degree in Political Science and Business from the University of Texas. He attended Stephen F. Austin where he received his Master’s Degree in Education.

During World War II, S. W. served in the Merchant Marines. After the war, he served as a paratrooper in the 101st Airborne Division of the US Army and was a part of the Allied Occupation Forces in Japan.

S. W. is survived by: his loving and devoted wife of 59 years, Dorthy L. Roberts Carter, his daughters: Alisa Carter Hibbs, and husband Mike, and Serica Carter Wilkins, and husband Ronnie. Also surviving are four grandchildren: Dan’l Lewis, Chris Wilkins, and wife Holly, Michael Lewis and Julie Wilkins. S. W. was uncle to Missy Martin, and husband Tommy, Keith Tamplin, Mark Campbell, Gay Carter, Kit Carter, Mac Carter, and wife Mavis, and Bob Carter. S. W. is survived by one brother-in-law, Carl T. Campbell. S. W. was preceded in death by his parents, Smith L. and Della Ballard Carter, his sisters, Lamerle Carter, Louise Carter Tamplin, and Joyce Carter Campbell, his brother, Dugie Carter and his brother-in-law, Henry Tamplin.

S. W. loved Shelbyville and Shelby County and was very proud of the place he chose to call home. He was an active member of the Shelbyville First Baptist Church and was a member of the Sam Houston Masonic Lodge #32 in Shelbyville for over 60 years. S.W.’s teaching career began in Brooklyn, Texas and he also taught in Tenaha, Texas. When he had an opportunity to come back to teach in his beloved Shelbyville, he took it. He taught high school history and was the high school principal for a short time before becoming the school’s superintendent. He retired from education in 1980 after serving 23 years as the superintendent at Shelbyville and 28 years as an educator. Mr. Carter was also a cattle farmer, timber grower and owned his own real estate business.

S. W. was serving on the Shelby Soil and Water Conservation District Board and the Shelby County Farm Bureau Board of Directors at the time of his death. He was instrumental in establishing the Shelbyville Water System and served on the board. He helped form the Shelbyville Fire Department and was one of the founding members of the Shelby County Historical Society. He served on the Board of Directors of the First National Bank in Center and on the Shelby County Chamber of Commerce Board of Directors. He served on many other boards over the years including the Shelby County Tax Appraisal District Board, the Shelby County Hospital Board, and the Memorial Hospital Board.

In 1961, S. W. became a member of the Board of Directors for Deep East Electric Coop. He served as Secretary beginning in 1969, Vice President in 1989, and President in 1993. He stepped down as President in 2010. At the time of his death, he had served for over 50 years. He also served on the Board of Directors of the Electric Cooperatives of TEX-LA, ETEC and NTEC. He served as President of TEX-LA for over 11 years.

Louise Meyers, 70, of Center, passed away Thursday, April 5, 2012 at Shelby Regional Medical Center in Center. She was born February 16, 1942 in Shelby County to Julius Elzie Windham and Corine Meyers Windham.

Visitation will be held from 10:00am to 1:30pm, Saturday, April 7, 2012 at Watson & Sons Funeral Home in Center. Graveside service will be held at 2:00pm, Saturday, April 7, 2012 at White Rock Cemetery in Center with Angela Waller officiating.

Patricia Babek Brown, 65, of Waco, passed away April 4, 2012, resting comfortably at her residence. Graveside service will be Saturday, April 7, 2012 at 11:00am at Ramah Cemetery with Bro. Russ Atwood officiating. Patricia was a caring, compassionate, hard-working woman who enjoyed spending time with her family and traveling.

She was born December 22, 1946, in Shelby County, Texas. She was preceded in death by her father, Hubert Babek, and her husband, Gerald Brown. She is survived by her two sons, Stephen Brown and wife, Sherry, of San Antonio, and Spencer Brown and wife, Rebecca, of Dallas; two grandchildren, David and Sarah; two great grandchildren, Jayden and Payton; her mother, Berta Babek; and her sister, Terri Woodruff, and brother-in-law, Rick.

Virginia Bell Boyd Rogers, 98, of Tyler, passed away Saturday, March 31, 2012 in Tyler.

Services will be 10:00 a.m. Thursday, April 5, 2012 at St. John’s Episcopal Church in Center with the Very Reverend Stephen Secaur officiating. Burial will follow at Oaklawn Memorial Park. Visitation will be Wednesday, April 4, 2012 from 5:00 p.m. until 7:00 p.m. at Mangum Funeral Home.

Mrs. Rogers was born July 20, 1913, in Gradyville, Georgia, to Horace Huntington Boyd and Kathleen Virginia Shrivers Boyd. When she was a young girl, the family moved to Wenatchee, Washington where she grew up. She attended Washington State University before moving to San Francisco, California, where she met her husband, James Graves Rogers, Jr., DDS, who was from Center, Texas. They married in San Diego, California on August 1, 1942. After the end of World War II, Dr. Rogers continued his military service in the U.S. Navy and Virginia was an active and patriotic Navy wife. After Dr. Rogers’ retirement from the Navy, they lived in Shreveport, LA for many years and then in Center, TX. Virginia was a member of many organizations over the years including Delta Delta Delta Sorority, the Charles G. Davenport Chapter of the Daughters of the Republic of Texas, and the Shreveport Chapter of Daughters of the American Revolution for which she served as Regent.

She was preceded in death by her Parents, Horace Huntington Boyd and Kathleen Virginia Shrivers Boyd, Husband, James Graves Rogers, Jr., Brother, Horace Huntington Boyd, Jr., and Sister, Kathleen Tayloe Boyd Broussal.

She is survived by:

Cozette Myrl Stephano, 97, of Timpson, TX, passed away April 1, 2012, in Garrison, TX. She was born March 11, 1915, in Clayton, TX, to Blanche E. (Heath) and Henry T. Bailey. Cozette was a graduate of Timpson High School. She was a housewife and devoted wife of 55 years. She loved the Lord and was a faithful member of Good Hope Baptist Church as long as she was able to attend.

Cozette Stephano was preceded in death by her husband, John Joseph Stephano; brother, LaClair Bailey; sister-in-law, Evelyn Bailey; and sister Lillian Bock and her husband Frank Bock. She is survived by many nephews and nieces.

Graveside service for Cozette Stephano will be at 2:00 PM, Wednesday, April 4, 2012, at Blair Cemetery, Timpson, with Bro. Elmer Mathews officiating. Visitation will be at Taylor Funeral Home from 1:00 PM until service time on Wednesday.

The family extends its appreciation and thanks to the entire staff and employees of Garrison Nursing Home for the wonderful care and love given to Cozette for the past 14 years.
