Tom Martin, 100 of Garrison, Texas passed away October 30, 2012 in Nacogdoches, Texas. He was born November 2, 1911 in Henderson, Texas to Thomas Martin and Lucy Holt Williamson Martin. He was of the Baptist faith and was retired from Southwestern Bell Telephone Company.

Visitation will be held Friday, November 2, 2012 from 5pm to 7pm at Garrison Funeral Home. Funeral services will be held Saturday, November 3, 2012 at 10:30am at First Baptist Church in Garrison, Texas with Bro. John McGuire to officiate. Interment will follow in Greenwood Cemetery, Garrison, Texas.

Mrs. Ima Jean Thomas, age 68, was called home on Thursday October 25, 2012 in Houston, Texas at the M.D. Anderson Medical Center.

Ima Jean was born on January 7, 1944 to the late Gladys and Dave Martin, Sr. She accepted Christ at an early age and was a member of the Friendship Baptist Church in Grand Cane, LA.

Ima Jean graduated from Logansport Rosenwald High School in Logansport, LA on May 29, 1961. On August 22, 1963 she earned her degree in bookkeeping from the International Business College in Houston, Texas.

On August 3, 1963 she united in Holy Matrimony to Charlie B. Thomas to this union on December 6, 1963 one child was born.

Funeral services will be held at 11am Saturday, November 3, 2012 at the Friendship Baptist Church in Grand Cane, LA, with interment following in the Friendship Cemetery in Grand Cane, LA. Officiating will be Pastor Frankie Cooper. Visitation will be on November 2nd from 6pm to 7pm at the Mt. Olive Methodist Church in Joaquin, TX.

Ima J. Thomas leaves to cherish her memory, her loving husband of 49 years Charlie B. Thomas, daughter Tina D. Thomas, 3 grandchildren, Tanya D. Hudson, Patrick D. Espree, and Patrice W. Espree. Also her loving brothers and sisters, Daisy Blackmon, Eugene Martin (Ruby Faye), Johnny Martin, Betty Martin, and Dave Martin, Jr (Mary), her beloved in-laws, nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends.

She is preceded in death by her brother Tom M. Martin, her mother and father Gladys and Dave Martin, Sr. and her sister Curly B. Prince.

Juanita Spears, 75 of Garrison, Texas formerly of Lansing, Michigan passed away October 29, 2012 in Nacogdoches, Texas. She was born February 23, 1937 in Morgans Creek, Kentucky to Earl Murphy and Blanchie Adams Murphy. She was a homemaker and of the Pentecostal faith.

Visitation will be held Friday, November 2, 2012 from 10am to 11am at Garrison Funeral Home with funeral services to follow at 11am. Pastor Mike Williams will officiate. Interment will follow at Cold Springs Cemetery, Garrison, Texas.

Kermit "Bud" Burleson, Jr., 79, of Orange passed away Sunday, October 28, 2012 in Orange.

The funeral service will be Wednesday October 31, 2012 at 10:00 a.m. at Claybar Funeral Home in Orange. A graveside service will be at 2:00 p.m. at Oaklawn Memorial Park Cemetery in Center. Deacon Eddie Blankenstein of St. Francis of Assisi Catholic Church will officiate all services.

Visitation will be at the funeral home on Tuesday from 5 to 8:00 p.m. with a wake service at 6:00 p.m.

Mr. Burleson was born June 3, 1933 in Sulphur, LA to Kermit K. Burleson, Sr. and Amoura Louis (Davis) Burleson. He retired as a production scheduler for DuPont Chemical Company, and was a member of the Knights of Columbus. He was a member of St. Mary Catholic Church where he sang in the Choir of Angels and was a former member of St. Therese Catholic Church in Center where he built the beautiful wooden alter in the church. He enjoyed building cabinets and many people will remember him for always being so happy. One of his biggest joys in his life was his children, grandchildren and great grandchildren who he loved so much.

He is preceded in death by his parents and first wife, Carole Burleson, mother of his four daughters, and his sisters, Margaret Clark and Beverly Tilley.

Those left to cherish his memory are his wife, Jeanette Venable Burleson of Orange; daughters and sons-in-law, Vicki and Wayne Ishee, Sandra and Don Samford, Beth and Ron Thibodeaux and Sharon and Jeff Stewart; step-sons, Gerald Lindsey, Jr. and Chad Lindsey. He is also survived by his daughter-in-law, Charlean Lindsey wife of the late Todd Lindsey; 12 grandchildren; 17 great grandchildren; sisters, Audrey Berry and Elise Beeler; brother, Nolan Burleson and wife, Carol, and many nieces and nephews.

Services are under the direction of Claybar Funeral Home in Orange, Texas.


Kerry K. Whitton passed away peacefully at Colonial Pines Health Care Center, San Augustine, TX, on Monday, October 29, 2012, at the age of 78. He had been a resident of San Augustine and Nacogdoches Counties for the better part of 60 years.

Kerry was a graduate of Texas A&M, earning both a Bachelors and Masters degree. He was an officer in the United States Army, and later a graduate of UT Law School. He taught math for several years in Port Acres, TX and also in San Augstine. He enjoyed reading and studying history, cherishing every word of hundreds of books that he read over the course of his life. He was blessed to have many long-time friends in the area.

Visitation with his son and cousins will be at Taylor Funeral Home in Timpson, TX, on Thursday, November 1, 2012, 1:00 – 3:45 PM. All friends are invited to stop by and share good memories of Kerry. No formal funeral services are planned. There will be a private graveside burial on Thursday, November 1, 2012, at 4:00 PM, at Woodlawn Cemetery in Timpson.

Doris (Wimberly) Bassett, 81, of Wheat Ridge, CO, passed away October 14, 2012. She was born in Shelby County, Texas to John and Maggie (Adams) Wimberly. After Doris graduated from Shelbyville High School, she moved to Denver, CO, where she met and married Richard Bassett. Doris was a stay at home Mom, which she thoroughly enjoyed. After Richard retired, they spent many days travelling as long as their health allowed. Doris loved spending time with her family and will be deeply missed.

Rose Ann Coats, age 71, of Pollok, Texas, passed away Friday, Oct. 26, 2012, at Memorial Medical Center in Lufkin, Texas.

Miss Coats was born Feb. 14, 1941, in Nacogdoches County, Texas, as the daughter of Jeff F. Coats Sr. and Georgia Lee Clifton Coats.

Her survivors include two brothers, Jeff Coats Jr. of Center, Texas, and Bill Coats of Muskegon, Michigan; and several nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be held at 2:00 p.m. Monday, Oct. 29, 2012, at Cason Monk-Metcalf Sunset Chapel, located at 5400 North Street, Nacogdoches, with Chaplain Greg Freijos officiating. Interment will follow at Pleasant Hill Cemetery in Nacogdoches County.

David Lloyd Anderson, Sr., 70, of Timpson, TX, was born March 13, 1942, in Wharton, TX, to parents Elmer David Anderson, Sr., and Velma Dee (Gaddis) Anderson. He passed away Saturday, October 27, 2012, at his home in Timpson. A memorial graveside service will be at 1:00 PM, Saturday, November 3, 2012, in Turner Cemetery located on Kidd Cemetery Road, New Caney, TX.

David Anderson was a graduate of New Caney High School and was a carpenter for over 25 years for the City of Houston. David was also a millwright with Brown & Root Construction Company. He enjoyed his country living, mule pulling, and is the oldest member of Cowboy Church, Timpson.

Mr. Leffel Poindexter, age 83, of Jasper, passed from this life today, Wed. Oct. 24, 2012, in Jasper.

Leffel was born to Nettie (Neely) Poindexter and Morris Benton Poindexter on May 9, 1929, in San Augustine County, Texas. He served in the United States Navy, and was employed as a mixer for Nabisco Bakery and was also involved in farming and agriculture, and was a member of the Baptist Church.

Funeral services for Roy Alford Spradley, 83, of Lufkin were held Thursday, October 18, 2012 at the Timberland Drive Church of Christ with Harold Hancock and Jeff Spradley officiating. Interment followed in the Garden of Memories Memorial Park.

Mr. Spradley was born August 4, 1929 in Nacogdoches, Texas to the late Bay and Genevieve (Alford) Spradley, and died Sunday, October 14, 2012 in a local hospital. He resided in Angelina County most of his life and was an Elder at Timberland Drive Church of Christ.

Mr. Spradley graduated from Nacogdoches High School. He worked in accounting at the Southern Pacific Railroad Co. before entering the U.S. Army during the Korean Conflict, where he served in the Honor Guard. Upon returning from the Army he resumed his job at Southern Pacific and enrolled at Stephen F. Austin State University. While at SFA he was a member of the Accounting Club, served as the president of the Alpha Chi Honor Society, and taught lab classes in the Biology Department. He received his Bachelor of Business Administration degree and became a Certified Public Accountant. Mr. Spradley began his career at Axley & Rode, CPAs in Lufkin. He retired in 1991 after 28 years of service as Director of Internal Audit for Temple Inland in Diboll. He was a past President of the Ark-La-Tex Chapter of the Institute of Internal Auditors.

Roy Spradley loved Christ, his family, his friends and his community. He worked in his church with an unwavering commitment for over 48 years. He was an exemplary husband and father. With Glenda, he raised Jeff and Lori through his knowledge of and love for Christ and his teachings. He remained faithful to his friends and church congregants throughout his life and was an active member of the Angelina Arts Alliance and the Lufkin community. Roy will be sorely missed by those who knew him.

Survivors include his wife of 60 years, Glenda Spradley of Lufkin; son and daughter-in-law, Jeff and Patti Spradley of Lake Park, Georgia; daughter and son-in-law, Lori and Chuck Haney of Humble; grandchildren, Ashley Mays and husband John, Charlie and Zach Haney; great-grandchildren, Maggie and Jaiden Mays; mother-in-law, Elsie Tee Rudd of Center; sisters-in-law and brother-in-law, Barbara Spradley of Lufkin and Bobbie and Ray Smiley of Houston; brother-in-law and sister-in-law, William and Diana Rudd of Dallas; and nephews and nieces, Kyle Spradley and wife Valena of Lufkin, Barry Rudd, Matt Rudd, both of Dallas, Gina McMahon of Houston, Jill Taylor and husband Greg of Broken Arrow, Oklahoma, and Roxann Ellis of Lufkin.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his brothers, Billy Spradley and Bobby Spradley; and father-in-law, Roy Rudd.

Avis Mae Leggett Buckner, wife of the late Ralph Buckner of Joaquin, Texas passed away on October 23, 2012 in Atascocita, Texas at the age of 84 years. Avis was born in the Ashton Community on July 11, 1928 to the late Asa Leggett and Maggie Taylor Leggett. In 1949, she married Ralph Buckner and they remained husband and wife for 57 years until his death in 2006.

Avis is survived by her daughter, Martha Buckner, “other daughters” Vanya Rhea and Betsy Delgado; her granddaughter Carissa Magras and husband Brandon; two great-grandchildren Jesse and Providence Magras of Willow Street, Pennsylvania; a brother, John Leggett of Joaquin and a sister, Anne Harvey of Shelbyville.

Special family friends include Roy, Diedre and Destiny Romero; Ricky Smith, Glenn Oates and her best friend, Evon Daw.

Avis was an avid animal lover and raised AKC Boxers for many years. She was proud to be known as “The Dog Lady”. She also loved all other animals, bird and being outdoors.

She had a generous and caring spirit and selflessly assisted many individuals in need during her life seeking no recognition in return.

Visitation will be held at Watson & Sons Funeral Home on Saturday October 27, 2012 from 2:00 p.m. until 4:00 p.m. A graveside service will be held immediately following the visitation at the Johnson Cemetery in Joaquin.

Mrs. Patsy Ann Thornton, age 52, of San Augustine, Texas, entered into rest earlier this morning, October 21, 2012, in San Augustine after a lengthy battle with cancer. She was born October 3, 1960, in Center, Texas, to the late Lucious Thomas Thornton and Mildred Marie (White) Thornton. Patsy was a homemaker, caring for her family. For several years she worked as a cashier for Mixon's.

She is survived by her husband David Earl Eddings of San Augustine; brothers Ronald Thornton and wife Kathy of Melrose, Ray Thornton, Lynn Thornton, Tom Thornton, Charles Thornton and wife Linda, Hollis Thornton and William Thornton - all of San Augustine; sisters Ida Butler and husband Cornell of San Augustine, Mary Wall and husband Robert of Newton, Peggy Brown and husband Jerry of Black Jack; sister-in-law Jean Thornton of Lufkin; grandchildren J.T. Eddings, Laura Eddings, Julia Eddings and Jasmine Eddings; along with a host of nieces, nephews, and other relatives.

She was preceded in death by her parents L.T. and Marie Thornton, and a brother Donald Thornton.

Funeral services were held today, Monday, October 22, 2012, 11:00 a.m., Wyman Roberts Memorial Chapel with Bro. Hugh Mixon officiating. Visitation was Sunday, October 21, 2012, 5:00 til 8:00 p.m., Wyman Roberts Funeral Home. Burial will be in the Macune Cemetery. Pallbearers will be John Robert Ziegler, James White, Lane Chambers, Jed Coulter, James Thornton, Bob Marshall. Honorary pallbearers are Billy White and Leon Thornton.


Elsie Tee Youngblood Rudd, of Center, Texas, passed away peacefully at her home at the age of 100 on Saturday, October 20, 2012, surrounded by family and friends. She was affectionately known as “Ma” to her family in her golden years.

Elsie Tee was born December 13, 1911, in the Day Community of Shelby County to the late Everett and Minnie Haight Youngblood. When she was seven her family moved to the Mt. Herman Community. She grew up working the family farm and was an exceptional basketball player in high school along with her sister, Duetta. She married Roy Rudd in 1931 and they started a family in the Jericho Community in which he grew up. Together they rose to prominence as Shelby County farmers and ranchers and were leaders in the community.

Elsie Tee raised cattle and chickens, grew watermelons and other crops and worked the fields for most of her life. One of her passions was gardening; she was at home in her garden. At age 92, she applied her expertise to grow a 150 pound watermelon, winning the Shelby County, Texas “What-A-Melon Festival’s” largest melon contest. She loved anything outdoors; she found peace in fishing and was an avid hunter until age 96, bagging deer and elk throughout Texas and Colorado. She was a prolific world traveler, visiting more than 50 countries on six continents with her travels chronicled in her numerous photo albums.

Elsie Tee was a devoted Christian, wife of a church elder and a long-time Sunday school teacher. She attended Mt. Pleasant and Hurst Street Churches of Christ and was very active in the ministry. She served God diligently in countless ways, including visiting the sick and infirm in her community and providing food for the needy. She was the consummate host and enjoyed having friends and family over for gatherings to share meals and time together. She was well known for her exceptional cooking and sewing skills.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Roy Rudd, and her son-in-law, Roy Spradley. She is survived by her children: Glenda Spradley of Lufkin, Bobbie Smiley and husband Ray of Houston and William Rudd and wife Dianna of Dallas; grandchildren: Jeff Spradley and wife Patti, Lori Spradley Haney and husband Chuck, Gina Smiley McMahon, Jill Smiley Taylor and husband Greg, Barry Rudd and Matthew Rudd, great-grandchildren: Charlie Haney, Zachary Haney, Ashley Mays and husband John, Brianna McMahon, Matthew McMahon, Ashley Taylor, Anna Taylor and Jacob Taylor, great-great-grandchildren: Maggie and Jaiden Mays, and sisters-in-law: Florence McFatter Rudd of Jackson, Tennessee, and Vaneta Rudd Walker and husband Tommy of Euless – and special caregivers/friends: Pat Sherman and Sandra Mims.

Funeral services will be held Friday, October 26, 2012, at 10:00 a.m. at Watson & Sons Funeral Home with Tim Perkins and family members officiating. Interment will follow at Mt. Pleasant Cemetery in the Jericho Community. Visitation with the family will be Thursday, October 25, 2012, from 5:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. at Watson & Sons Funeral Home.

Alma was born on November 17, 1912 in Huxley, TX to George and Mary Ann Vaughn. She passed away on October 17, 2012 in Shreveport, LA. She was a member of Heritage Missionary Baptist Church.

Preceding Alma in death were her parents; her husband, Buron W. Wimberly; 5 sisters and 3 brothers. Mrs. Dorris Ann Sibley Baggett, age 88, of San Augustine, passed from this life on Wednesday morning, October 17, 2012, in San Augustine.

Dorris was born to Lou Ella (Dent) Sibley and David Sibley on February 7, 1924, in Houston, Texas. She was employed by the Deep East Texas Electric Co-op in San Augustine for many years, and was a member of the Order of the Eastern Star Chapter, and the White Rock Missionary Baptist Church in San Augustine County, Texas.

Memorial Services will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday on October 20, 2012, in the Liberty Hill Cemetery in San Augustine. The family chose cremation and only visitation at the graveside.

Jack Hawkins, 80, of Center, passed away Tuesday, October 16, 2012 at Garrison Nursing Home in Garrison. He was born March 30, 1932 in Shelbyville to Pete Akin and Catherine Pullen Akin. Herman L. Johnson Sr. was born on March 16, 1919 in Tenaha, Texas to parents Addie and John H Johnson.
Herman was a student at East Texas Baptist College in Marshall, Texas when he joined the Army in 1942 to serve in the Pacific theater during WWII.

He married Marie Dison on June 13, 1953. He gained three stepchildren as a result of this marriage and later had two more children. He was of the Baptist faith and attended Center Missionary Baptist church until moving to Kilgore during his later years.

He is preceded in death by his parents, his wife Marie, a sister Yvonne Smith, his daughter Joan Collins, son-in-law David Collins and grandson Ashley Collins.

He is survived by his son Herman L Johnson Jr and wife Linda of Kilgore, step children Donnith and husband David Helton of Oklahoma, Brenda and husband Bobby Haley of Haughton La. and Larry Cochran and wife Carolyn of Center. He is also survived by a host of grandchildren and great grandchildren.

Funeral Services for Mrs. Francis King, age 104 of Tenaha, Texas, died Sunday, September 30, 2012 in Herman Hospital in Sugarland, Texas.

Visitation will be Friday, October 5, 2012, at St. John Baptist Church in Tenaha, Texas, from 6-8pm. Services will be at St. John Baptist Church in Tenaha, Texas at 12:00 noon. Rev. Chandler Pettis officiating. Burial will be at Bobo Cemetery Tenaha, Texas.

Donner Ray Hoyt, age 49 of San Augustine, passed away Monday, October 1, 2012 at Memorial Hospital in San Augustine. He was born July 30, 1963 to J.T. and Beatrice Bartchett.

Services will be held Saturday, October 6, 2012 1pm at Roberts Baptist Church, San Augustine, Texas with Rev. Artis Mosby to officiate. Interment will follow at Roberts Cemetery in San Augustine, Texas.

Graveside services honoring the life of Ret. MSgt. Philip R. Ermel, 70, will be held Friday, October 5, 2012, at 2:30 PM at Union Springs Cemetery, Converse, LA. Rev. Doyle English and Rev. Amador Santos will be officiating. Visitation will be held October 5, 2012 at the Rose-Neath Logansport, LA from 11:00 AM until 2:00 PM.

Mr. Philip was born June 6, 1942 in Houston, TX to Philip and Ruby Sheffield Ermel and passed away at his home with his family by his side. During his life he proudly served his country during the Vietnam Conflict in the United State Air Force. He retired from the US Air Force after 22 years of service. While serving his country in the US Air Force he was in the Air Police, ran dogs, and worked in the sheet metal department.

Preceding MSGT. Philip in death was his son Steve Harper; parents Philip and Ruby Ermel; and brother Arnie Ermel.

Those left behind to cherish his memory are his wife of 28 years Norma Kay Ermel; daughters Teresa Kay Ermel Bryant and husband Zac and Veleda “Doodle” Ermel; sisters Joyce Gattis, Norma Holman, LaWanda West, and Elizabeth Tribe and husband Charles; brothers Martin “Buzzy” Ermel and wife Janet and Royce Ermel and wife Kathy; sister-in-law Nelda Worthington; brother-in-law C. B. Lum and wife Debbie; mother-in-law Hazel Harper; grandchildren Steven Dawson, Alyssa Dawson, Lindie Kay “Cricket” Bryant, Colbe Bryant, Cody Ray Roberts and Jesse Lee Bryant; and numerous nieces and nephews.

Howard Ford Windham, 82, of Center, passed away Monday, October 1, 2012 at his residence. He was born March 24, 1930 in Timpson to Chesley Windham and Allie Elizabeth Socia Windham. Mr. Windham was retired from Texas Forest Service. He was a member of Sam Samford Masonic Lodge #149 in Center, a past member of Sharon Temple Shrine and a member Center Missionary Baptist Church.

Visitation will be held from 5:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m., Wednesday, October 3, 2012 at Watson & Sons Funeral Home in Center. Funeral service will be held at 2:00 p.m., Thursday, October 4, 2012 at Watson & Sons Chapel with Bro. Pat Windham officiating. Interment will follow at Folsom Chapel Cemetery in Center.

Pallbearers will be Brad Cockrell, Wayne Wood, Randy McLeroy, Cade Cooper, Randy Latham and Larry Goolsby. Honorary pallbearers will be Delbert Palmer, Jerry Strong, Price Wilburn and Norman Hurt.
