Joel Allen McKissick, 67, of Center, passed away Monday, July 15, 2013 at his residence. He was born April 29, 1946 in West Monroe, Louisiana to Joel Allen McKissick and Ethel Earline Bryan McKissick. Mr. McKissick served in the United States Air Force. He was a member of The Gideons, West Monroe Masonic Lodge #419 in West Monroe, Louisiana and First United Methodist Church in Center.

Joel was the life of the party who never met a stranger. He could sell ice to an Eskimo and you never wanted to bet against him--you would lose. Joel loved his projects – landscaping the yard, setting up a small pool for the grandkids, removing the pool to replace with a fire pit, buying gadgets and “very useful” items from Amazon, and the list goes on… Joel would claim he didn’t like kids, but he would be the first person playing with them and chasing them around the yard. He absolutely adored his children and grandchildren: and they dearly loved their “Dad” and “Pop.” A promise was truly special to Joel. He taught us that we should never make a promise we don’t intend to keep. He was genuine, generous, and gracious. Joel loved to dance! He would glide across the floor with his Polly, smiling from ear to ear. He will be missed.

James Nolan Hawkins (Jim), 68, of Center, Texas, beloved husband and best friend of Nelwyn Whitley Hawkins for 39 years, passed away peacefully surrounded by the ones he loved, laughed with, and lived for, on Friday, July 05, 2013.

He was preceded in death by his sister, Mary Sue Childers, and his parents, Nolan Hawkins and Dorothy and Al Burnside.

Jim was born in Arkadelphia, AR, on January 19, 1945. He attended Louisiana Tech and received a BA in Business. He faithfully served his country in the Air Force.

Jim loved to travel, buying t-shirts and hats wherever he went and wearing them so he could strike up conversations about his travels. He loved animals and people and talking one on one with others. He constantly made physical contact with many pats or a light backhand to make sure the other person was listening. He valued truth and honesty, and always stressed to Steve and Judy, “Just tell me the truth, and you won’t get in trouble with me.”

Jim had nicknames for almost everyone, rarely using given names, and loved to joke and laugh and frequently used “banshee hollered” as an excuse for not listening or missing something important (Meaning a child screamed, and it wasn’t his fault he wasn’t listening). Jim had the purest, helpful and compassionate heart, and his loving spirit and sense of humor made the Hawkins’ house a welcoming place for friends and family.

Jim enjoyed landscaping, particularly trees and shrubs, and working outside, clearing brush, cutting down trees, and burning really large fires. He was known to leave his chainsaw on the dining room table from time to time. He loved history, ghost stories, the colors of the fall leaves, and riding in the car with the windows rolled down and his arm hanging out.

13 Brothers and sisters, we do not want you to be uninformed about those who sleep in death, so that you do not grieve like the rest of mankind, who have no hope. 14 For we believe that Jesus died and rose again, and so we believe that God will bring with Jesus those who have fallen asleep in him. 15 According to the Lord’s word, we tell you that we who are still alive, who are left until the coming of the Lord, will certainly not precede those who have fallen asleep. 16 For the Lord himself will come down from heaven, with a loud command, with the voice of the archangel and with the trumpet call of God, and the dead in Christ will rise first. 17 After that, we who are still alive and are left will be caught up together with them in the clouds to meet the Lord in the air. And so we will be with the Lord forever. 18 Therefore encourage one another with these words.
1 Thessalonians 4:13-18

Jim’s granddaughter Elizabeth explained it simply. She said, “Papa Jim might die. But he will go to Heaven and get a new body.”

Besides his wife Nelwyn, Jim is survived by his daughter Judy Dill and her husband Brian of Dallas, Texas and his son Steve Hawkins and his wife Rachel of Marshall, Texas; his grandchildren, Alex and Rebecca Dill and William and Elizabeth Hawkins; his brother-in-law Bill Childers of Tyler; as well as numerous relatives and friends.

The family would like to express their sincere gratitude to the members of The Hospice of East Texas facility. Their dedication and effort to provide quality care during a difficult time were a heartwarming blessing to the entire family. We thank God for the gift of his life and the blessing of the time we spent with him.

A memorial service will be held honoring Jim on Sunday, July 7, 2013 at 4:00 p.m. at Downs Funeral Home, 4608 Elysian Fields Road, Marshall, TX. Pastor Carlton Burris will officiate. Burial will be at Liberty Hill’s Taylor Cemetery in Bienville, LA at the convenience of the family.

Sammy Joe Eldredge was born in Dripping Springs, Texas on June 13, 1939 to Joseph Orville and Leona Gertrude Jones Eldredge. He entered into his final reward on Sunday, June 30, 2013. Sammy attended school in Denison, Texas and graduated from high school with the DHS class of 1957. He accepted the Lord as his Savior in 1956, and married the love of his life, Betty Ruth Crawford on his twentieth birthday, June 13, 1959. (Everyone always teased him, because his mother had to sign to OK the marriage license.)

Sammy and Betty joined Mt. Pleasant Missionary Baptist in Denison, on Mothers’ Day, May 10, 1964, and he was baptized a few days later. On July 2, 1967, they answered God’s call to the ministry and moved to Texas Baptist Institute in Henderson on June 2, 1968. He accepted the pastorate of Gum Springs Missionary Baptist Church in August of 1968 and began seminary that same month. Sammy graduated from TBI in May 1972.

That same summer, he accepted pastorate of Lee-Hi Missionary Baptist Church in Sulphur Springs, Texas, and remained there until May 1974. Mothers’ Day 1974, Sammy accepted the pastorate of Timpson Missionary Baptist Church in Timpson, Texas, and he remained pastor of that church for 34 years until his resignation on July 5, 2008.

Anyone who knew Sammy Joe Eldredge knew how much he loved his Lord and Savior. Sammy served God faithfully as a husband, father and head of his family, and as a shepherd and pastor of each church he led. He spent thousands of hours on the road visiting hospitals, nursing homes, shut-ins, witnessing to the lost, carrying out the Great Commission of our Lord. He never complained although many times he felt as bad as the people he visited. He had a compassionate heart and a willing spirit.

Sammy is survived by his wife Betty, who stood faithfully by his side for 54 years, and daughters Cindy Rhodes and husband Bobby, and Sandy Jones and husband Carroll,. He also leaves behind five grandchildren who were the stars in his sky, Kimber Rhodes Jones and husband Joey and Jenny Rhodes Cassell and husband Solomon , and Scott Jones and wife Katie, Joseph Jones and wife Kathryn, and Samuel Jones. He also leaves seven great-grandchildren, Savannah and Madeline Cassell, Klaira and Kayleigh Jones, and Makayla, Sophie and Jaxxon Jones. Sammy is also survived by his brother Don Eldredge and wife Debbie, and sister-in-law Wanda Eldredge, all of Sherman, father-in-law Roy Crawford of Timpson, brother-in-law Roy Crawford, Jr., of Whitney, TX, and sister-in-law and brother-in-law Louise and Richard Koiner of Clarksville, TX.
