Bonnie Garner, 78, of Joaquin, passed away Tuesday, May 28, 2013 in Center. She was born December 17, 1934 in Jamestown, Tennessee to Oplis Adam West and Ella Williams West. She was a member of Toledo Bend Baptist Church in Huxley, Texas.

Visitation will be held from 5:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. Friday, May 31, 2013 at Watson & Sons Funeral Home in Center. Funeral service will be held at 11:00 a.m., Saturday, June 1, 2013 at Watson & Sons Chapel with Bro. Jack Forbis officiating. Interment will follow at Oaklawn Memorial Park in Center.

Pallbearers will be Brandon Garner, Bob Holcombe, David Amburn, Ben Webster, Andy Amburn and Jeffery Webster.

Mrs. Gay Nell Moore, 73 of Center passed away Monday, May 20, 2013 in Nacogdoches Memorial Hospital.

Funeral services will be held Saturday, June 1, 2013 at 11am at St. Paul Baptist Church in Center, Texas with additional visition from 10am to 11am before funeral services with Pastor Freddie Wilson officiating. Interment will follow at Westview Cemetery, Center, Texas. Wake for family and friends will be held Friday, May 31, 2013 from 6pm to 7pm at Community Funeral Home Chapel.

William R. “Rick” Forbis, 56, of Shelbyville, passed away Tuesday, May 28, 2013 at Nacogdoches Medical Center in Nacogdoches. He was born March 5, 1957 in Galena Park to Thomas W. Forbis and Dorothy Faye Emmons Forbis. Mr. Forbis was a member of Toledo Bend Baptist Church in Huxley.

David Lee, 61, of Center, passed away Tuesday, May 28, 2013 at his residence. He was born October 19, 1951 in Zwolle, Louisiana to R.D. Lee and Emma Ebarbe Lee. He was a member of Hillcrest Baptist Church in Center.

Graveside service will be held at 2:00 p.m., Thursday, May 30, 2013 at Oaklawn Memorial Park in Center with Bro. Gordon Vaughn officiating. Visitation will be held an hour prior to service time at Oaklawn Memorial Park.

Mattie Imelda (McLendon) Dellinger, 101, lifelong resident of Center and Center's beloved official town historian, passed away Tuesday, May 28, 2013 at her residence.

Services will be 10:00 a.m. Saturday, June 1, 2013 at First Baptist Church of Center with Bro. Michael Hale and Bro. Carl Smith officiating. Burial will follow at Oaklawn Memorial Park. Two visitation times will be Friday May 31, 2013 from 10:00 a.m. until 12:00 p.m. and again from 5:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. at Mangum Funeral Home.

Ms. Mattie was born October 1, 1911 in Center, Texas to M.B.” Bartow” McLendon, (born in Troy, Alabama from 1868-1933) and Carrie Elizabeth (Smithson) McLendon, (born March 22, 1885 in Grand Rivers, KY to 1985). Mattie’s family moved to Center in 1887. Mattie joined and was baptized into the First Baptist Church, Center, at the age of 12. Mattie was a 1929 graduate of Center High School. She worked as a clerk after graduation at Perry Brothers for 6 months and Bridges Drug Store for 2 years; Mattie married L.L. “Pete” Dellinger, husband of nearly 33 years until his death in 1966, (he was born in Ben Lomand, AR, Pete was a pharmacist and grocer); Alongside her husband, they operated a business and raised a family in Center. She worked for the 2 Center newspapers for over 50 years and the radio stations for over 17 years. She knew folks in both high and low stations of life due to her work for the local newspapers and radio station. Some of Mattie’s credits and awards include; worthy matron Order of Eastern Star in Center from 1940-41; secretary in County School Superintendent’s office; charter member of CHS Band Booster; PTA officer; WMU officer; active Sunday School member; charter member of Shelby County Historical Society; she operated her own news bureau for newspapers; Silver Voice Award by the East Texas Tourism Association; member of the Texas and National Press Women; was the first woman appointed to the Board of the 4-H Foundation at A&M College; Friend of 4-H award; she was named Texas Press Woman of the Year in 1983 for District 9; she was honored by B &PW Club in Center by being named their Outstanding Woman of Year and in 1985 the Center Alumni Association elected Mattie to their Hall of Fame as a an outstanding Alumni. Mattie was the host of the radio call-in show, “Mattie’s Party Line”, which began in 1987, and was a window to the soul of Center, Texas where Mattie knew just about every caller by name; Mattie was received the Lifetime of Service Award by the William Crawford Chapter of the Daughters of Republic of Texas; received “The Best” Center Homecoming parade award for the 29 Club two years; She was a stringer for the ‘Houston Chronicle,' ‘Houston Post,' ‘Beaumont Enterprise,' ‘Shreveport Times' and Associated Press and then for two television stations, and covered for Channel 9; Before it was made official, Mattie was long known as Center's unofficial town historian. She knew the who, what, when, where, and how of just about every major news event in Shelby County and in 2008, Mattie was honored as the official “East Texas Town Historian of Center, Texas” by the Shelby County Historical Commission, which she easily met the criteria for; In 2009, Mattie was selected as the Shelby County Chamber of Commerce Distinguished Citizen of the Year award; Social life and fun was the ’29 club of Flappers & Jelly Beans that lasted for 10 years. Mattie enjoyed all the trips made by 1st National Bank (Citizens Bank) Travel Club and in later life Mattie enjoyed the Monday Noon Lunches with her friends, Mildred Pinkston, Bobbie Covington, Syble Holt and Kathleen Parker. Her passion was looking for local story ideas and writing about them as she was fulfilling the official as the town historian. Mattie was still currently writing a weekly column for “The Light and Champion ” to Mattie Party Line, which she has done for over 45 years. Mattie said "I just love writing, and I've covered a lot of good stories." Even though Mattie was admired by the likes of Dan Rather and Willie Nelson, her biggest fans have always been her neighbors in Center, Texas.

She is preceded in death by her Parents, M.B. and Carrie McLendon, Husband, L.L. “Pete” Dellinger, Son, Dan Dellinger, Daughter-in-law, Ruby Dellinger, Sister, Lucy Lee (McLendon) Gregory, Brother, George Martin McLendon and Brother, Maurice Bartow McLendon.

Robert L. Loomis, 69, of Joaquin, passed away Friday, May 24, 2013 at Green Acres Nursing Home in Center. He was born October 5, 1943 in Corinth, Pennsylvania to James L. Loomis and Ethel Burrows Loomis.
Mr. Loomis served in the United States Navy.

Lisa Marie Fryer (1972-2013), of Center, passed away suddenly on April 12, 2013 at her residence.

A memorial service was held with her family in Virginia.

She was known and loved by so many in Center and Lufkin. She was always so outgoing, fun loving and lit up a room with her beautiful smile and a special sparkle in her eyes.

She was preceded in death by her Mother, Ellen Fryer and Step-mother, Mary B. Fryer.

Jonathan Pi'erre Gardner passed away Saturday, May 18, 2013 at his grandparents' home in Shelbyville, Texas surrounded by loved ones. He was born on March 15, 1980 in Shreveport, LA, to Dyan Gardner and Alton Lee Coleman.

Charles Richard “Rick” Todd, Jr., beloved father, son, brother and friend, passed away Monday, May 20, 2013 at Nacogdoches Memorial Hospital.

A Memorial Service will be 10:00 a.m. Friday, May 24, 2013 at Mt. Olive Missionary Baptist Church, Timpson, Texas with Bro. Clifton Hughes and Cousin, Deke Pierce officiating.

He was born April 20, 1966 at Barksdale AFB, Louisiana to Rick Todd, Sr. and Dea Link. He resided in Center, Texas and worked at NAPA for over 20 years. Rick was a proud father that loved his two boys. He was an avid UT fan, loved to cooked and enjoyed being outdoors.

He was born January 28, 1928 Shelbyville, Texas in the Dreka Community to Marvin and Ezella (Litton) Shofner. He was a member of the West Hamilton Missionary Baptist Church.

Mr. Thomas "Tom" Edwards, age 69, longtime resident of San Augustine, and owner of San Augustine Gun Shop passed from this life on Wednesday, May 15, 2013 in Lufkin.

Tom was born to Hattie (Palmer) Edwards and Arthur Edwards on April 10, 1944, in Minneapolis, MN. Over the years, Tom felt strongly about giving back to the community which he was proud to call home. He contributed in different ways through community service. He served as a hunter education instructor in the State of Texas since 1979. In the early 1980's, he was a charter member and willing volunteer in the Redlands Gun Club. He held National Rife Association credentials as an NRA instructor in Certified Home Firearms Safety, Certified Pistol and Certified Rifle. He also held a TECLOSE Peace Officers and TECLOSE Instructor License, proudly serving as a unpaid deputy for the County of San Augustine and donating his time for firearms training for the county and the city of San Augustine, as well as surrounding counties and cities.

In 1995, be became a Concealed Handgun Instructor for the State of Texas and was still actively instructing up to the time of his death.

Ms. Gann was a Teacher’s Aide at Shelbyville ISD for many years and was a member of McClelland Community Church in Shelbyville.

Mrs. Wilma "Dean" (Taylor) Chance, age 70, of the Norwood Community in San Augustine County, Texas, passed from this life on Sunday, May 12, 2013, in Nacogdoches, Texas, as a result of a automobile accident that occurred on State Highway 147-South in San Augustine County.

Dean was born to Verna (Smith) Taylor and Bill Taylor on February 4, 1943, in San Augustine County, Texas. She was a loving mother, grandmother, and a beloved wife. She was a homemaker, and a retired small business owner having owned a mobile home park, and was a member of the Baptist Church.

Funeral Services will be held at 1 p.m. Wednesday, May 15, 2013, in the Wyman Roberts Memorial Chapel, with Bro. Larry Chandler officiating. Burial will be in the Antioch Cemetery in San Augustine County, Texas. Mac T. Carter, 59, of Shelbyville, passed away Friday, May 10, 2013 at his residence. He was born October 1, 1953 in Port Arthur to Smith Lamar Carter and Wilma Parker Carter. Mr. Carter was a teacher at Nacogdoches ISD and Shelbyville ISD, where he taught math for 29 years. He loved the outdoors and enjoyed fishing and hunting. Mr. Carter was a member of Campti Pentecostal Church in the Campti Community of Shelby County. He will be greatly missed by his loving family and friends.

Katie Lee (Stone) Herndon, 76, of Timpson, TX, passed away at her home on Monday, May 06, 2013. She was born October 14, 1936, in the Caledonia Community of Rusk County, Texas, to parents Walter P. and Priscilla (Crump) Stone. Katie had been a truck driver and drove a school bus for Gary ISD.

Helon Marie Baldwin Harwell, 92, of Tyler, Texas passed away on May 2, 2013 after a lengthy illness.

Helon was born in Center, Texas, on January 6, 1921. She graduated from Center High School and continued on to receive the following degrees: a Bachelor of Science in 1948 from Stephen F. Austin University, Nacogdoches, Texas, Master of Religious Education in 1949 and Doctor of Religious Education in 1955 from Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary, Ft. Worth, Texas, Master of Arts in 1962 from Northeast Missouri State Teachers College, Kirksville, Missouri, Doctor of Education in 1967 from the East Texas State University, Commerce, Texas.

Helon was married to John Earl Harwell on August 23, 1953. They were married for 59 years.

She retired from Nicholls State University, Thibodaux Louisiana, in 1990, after 23 years as a Professor and Head of the Department of Special Education.

Dr. Harwell is preceded in death by her husband, John Earl Harwell, her parents Aaron F. Baldwin and Bernice Baldwin.

Dr. Harwell is survived by her sister, Fannie B. Caid, nieces and nephews: Lanelle and Joseph Picarella of Tyler, TX, Jeff and Cindy Caid of Tyler, TX, Jean and Bill Cole of Lawrenceville, GA, Chauncey Young, Jr. of Lawrenceville GA, J.D. and Linda Smith of Slidell LA, Terry Harwell, Kerry Earl Harwell, Cheryl Ann Harwell; and many great nieces and nephews.

After serving a short stint in the U. S. Air Force, he and Linda Lucille London were married on October 29, 1966, in Carthage, Texas. In 1968, Christopher, their only child, was born.

Lowery was proud of Chris and Lucille as they used their musical talents to sing for the Lord all across the South. Lowery enjoyed eating, watching western movies on television, and piddling with his tools in the backyard. He was a member of Shady Grove Baptist Church in Emory, TX.

Survivors include his wife Lucille Collins of Mineola, TX; son Christopher Collins, also of Mineola; aunts Nellie Porter of Gary, TX, and Bertie Britton of Timpson; brother-in-law Dwayne London and wife Peggy of Carthage, TX; sister-in-law Glenda Langley and husband Chris of Timpson; and numerous nieces, nephews, cousins, and other relatives.

Gay Bass Crawford, 74, of Shelbyville, passed away Wednesday, May 1, 2013 at her residence.  She was born March 5, 1939 to George Bass and Meddie Chambliss Bass. She was a member of Mt. Calvary Full Gospel Church in Shelbyville.

Visitation will be held from 5:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m., Friday May 3, 2013 at Watson & Sons Funeral Home in Center. Funeral service will be held at 2:00 p.m., Saturday, May 4, 2013 at Watson & Sons Chapel with Rev. Don Windham and Rev. Billy Windham officiating.  Interment will follow at Strong Cemetery in Shelbyville.

Pallbearers will be Brad Bass, Chad Bass, Danny Bass, Joe Crawford, Keith Windham and Kevin Windham.
