Marleta Todd Chadwick, 94, died peacefully, on April 14, 2014. A funeral service will be held at 10:30 a.m. Thursday, April 17, 2014, at First Baptist Church of Center with Rev. Carl Smith and Rev. Michael Hale officiating. Interment will follow at Oaklawn Memorial Park. Visitation will be held Wednesday evening, April 16, 2014 from 4:30 p.m. until 7:30 p.m. at Mangum Funeral Home.

She was born February 14, 1920, in Celeste, Texas to Marvin and Leta Henslee Todd. She attended public schools in Celeste, college in Commerce, Texas and was an active member of the First Methodist Church of Celeste.

She met J. Carroll Chadwick while he was pastoring the First Baptist Church of Leonard at a church social. The two married February 22, 1942, in Greenville. Shortly after, she moved to Center where Carroll had already begun his ministry at the First Baptist Church. Together, they served the citizens of East Texas until his death on October 8, 1973. She will be best remembered for her service for more than 70 years in the children’s area of Sunday School, teaching in the Beginners’ Department and welcoming infants into the Cradle Roll. Whether in her home or in Fellowship Hall, Mrs. Chadwick was known for her hospitality. Much of her ministry was connected to her kitchen, where she could prepare chicken spaghetti for 500 just as quickly as she could make strawberry shortcake for a gathering of four. Many in Shelby County have had the opportunity to sample her creations that included countless sandwiches for Sunday night activities at the church, dozens of cookies for wedding receptions and anniversaries, special meals for the deacons and their families, snow cones for Vacation Bible School, and refreshments for her beloved WMU.

In addition to her numerous church activities, Mrs. Chadwick was an active member of the Center Garden Club, the Women’s Reading Club, and the Center Music Study Club. Her contributions frequently included service as an officer, judge at flower shows and Home Demonstration contests, and presenter at various organizational programs. She did all with a cheerful heart, creative talent, and willingness to share.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her brother, David Henslee Todd; her foster parents, Felton and Lucille Sparks; and Carroll, her husband of 31 years.

She is survived by their three children, David Chadwick and wife, Deborah, of Center; Martha Lou Scott and husband, Larry, of Waco; and Carleta Sandeen and husband, Michael, of Houston. She is also survived by grandchildren, Cullen Chadwick Sandeen of Washington, D.C.; Jackson Montgomery Sandeen of Houston; Caroline Boss Chadwick of Center; Blake Duvall Sandeen of Houston; and Elizabeth Blair Chadwick of Center; nephews and nieces; and cousins. She also leaves her attentive caregivers, Stella Carroll, Gloria Peterson, and Martha Daw.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the First Baptist Church of Center, the Chadwick Endowed Scholarship of East Texas Baptist University, the Chadwick Family Endowed Scholarship at Baylor University, or Fannie Brown Booth Library in Center.
