Royce Ray Wilburn, 52, of Melrose, passed away Sunday, August 31, 2014 at Nacogdoches Memorial Hospital.
Services will be 4:00 p.m. Wednesday, September 3, 2014 at Mangum Funeral Home Chapel with Bro. Allen Chaney officiating. Burial will follow at Old Salem Cemetery. Visitation will be prior to service from 2:00 p.m. until 4:00 p.m. at Mangum Funeral Home Chapel.
He was born on October 15, 1961 in Center to Charlie Dane and Shirley Eloise (Daugherty) Wilburn. He worked in the logging woods as an equipment operator for Rodriguez and Sons Logging.

Alton Crawford, 86, of Shelbyville, passed away Friday, August 29, 2014 in San Augustine.
Funeral service will be held at 11:00 a.m., Monday, September 1, 2014 at Watson & Sons Funeral Home in Center. Interment will follow at Strong Cemetery in Huxley. A visitation will be held one hour prior to funeral service.
Mr. Crawford was born July 29, 1928 in East Point, Louisiana to Frank Crawford and Lela Belle Gilbert Crawford. He grew up in North Louisiana and entered the Army near the end of WWII, serving in the Army Security Agency in Europe. Mr. Crawford enjoyed a long career as an oil and gas producer. Alton and Gay enjoyed traveling to many places across the country this work required. In later years, they were blessed to have the company of their grandchildren in their home. Even in retirement, Mr. Crawford worked hard and always liked to keep busy with his yard and many projects.

Dollie was born on June 5, 1950 in Houston to John L. Stephens, Sr. and Rena J. (Panama) Stephens. Dollie spent most of her adult life in Crockett where she raised her children and grandson, Bryan. For many years, she owned/operated Wholesale Auto Parts and Home Laundry in Crockett. Dollie moved to Bedias in 2000 where she loved being close to her family, but missed her friends in Crockett. She was very active with Madisonville High School Band while Bryan was attending. Dollie was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Charles Beach; brother, Bobby Stephens, Sr.; brother-in-law, Robert Jackson, Sr.; sister, Frances Steelman; step-daughter, Terry Black; and grandson-in-law, Brandon Hayes, Sr.

George Allen Goodwin Jr., 56, of Joaquin, died August 15, 2014 with his family by his side.
Visitation will be held from 5:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m., Sunday, August 17, 2014 at Watson & Sons Funeral Home in Center. Funeral service will be held at 2:00 p.m., Monday, August 18, 2014 at Watson & Sons Chapel with Bro. Hollis Bass officiating. Interment will follow at Old Home Cemetery in Center.
Mr. Goodwin was born on July 11, 1958 in La Marque to George Allen Goodwin Sr. and Pauline Edomm Goodwin. George was a member of the Old Home Baptist Church.
George was previously employed by N. L. Baroid for many years and was recognized for the design and introduction of the Mobile DWD Pulser District Flushing Rig, a tool used for downhole drilling and widely used in the oilfield industry today.
He grew up in Alvin and as a young child loved riding mini-bikes with his siblings, cousins and neighbors. He later started riding motorcycles and raced motocross, winning many trophies. George loved sailing and had a sailboat that he loved sailing in the Clear Lake/Kemah area. He also had a small Hobie Cat sailboat that he frequently took his nieces and nephews on, sailing for hours. They called him “Galby” and they would go “Hobieing”.
George will be especially remembered for his quick wit and the ability to make people laugh. He was very caring and giving. He loved to make gifts for people; making guns, knives and special mementos for family and friends.

W. M. Williams, Jr. (Buck), 90, of Center, passed away at his home, surrounded by his loving family on August 26, 2014.
Visitation will be held from 5:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m., Thursday, August 28, 2014 at Watson & Sons Funeral Home in Center. Funeral service will be held at 2:00 p.m., Friday, August 29, 2014 at Watson & Sons Chapel with Rev. Joel McMahon officiating. Interment will follow at Oaklawn Memorial Park in Center.
W. M. Williams, Jr. (Buck) was born in Shelby County on December 21, 1923, to Walter Williams and Willie Ada Muckleroy Williams. He graduated from Center High School in 1941 and went into the U. S. Navy for six years and returned to Center as a disabled veteran. He got his Bachelor’s degree from Stephen F. Austin University in Nacogdoches, Texas and taught for two years at Carthage High School.
He met Melba Grimsley in 1948 and it was definitely “love at first sight”, and they were married on September 2 of the same year. They will have been married sixty-six years in September of 2014. Buck and Melba were married in the First Christian Church in Center, where Buck was chairman of the board for many years. He was a charter member of the Center Country Club and served as president several times. For many years, he was the oldest member playing golf.
In August of 1953, the Atlas Plywood Corporation came to Center, and Buck was the first employee hired by that company. He had an “office”, a building 12x12 that had one door and no windows. He was with the “plywood mill” until 1993. He survived six sell-outs and remained forty years with the company. He retired in 1993 with the title of general manager.
In December of 2003, Buck went back to work with his lifetime friend, James Campbell, at General Shelters and Campbell’s Portable Buildings. He had agreed to work for six months, but he stayed for six years and again retired in September of 2010 to his home on Highway 96 where he has lived since that time. During his illness he remained in his home, receiving loving care from his family who were always there for him.
Buck is survived by his beloved family: His wife, Melba Grimsley Williams; his daughter, Montie Dawson of Longview, Texas; his son, Todd Williams and wife, Donna of Weatherford, Texas; one granddaughter, Lindsey Dawson of Fort Worth, Texas; three grandsons: Austin Williams and Garrett Williams of Weatherford, Texas and Stephen Tinkle and wife, Gabreala of Bryan, Texas. His two great-grandchildren are Ilsa Tinkle and Stocker Tinkle of Bryan, Texas. Buck had eight brothers and sisters, but only two brothers survive, Banks Williams and wife, Dorothy, of Montgomery, Texas, and Lowell Williams and wife, Karen, of Longview, Texas. He is also survived by three sisters-in-law: Betty Williams of Longview, Betty Grimsley of Center and Irene Grimsley of Winnsboro, Texas.
One of Buck’s greatest sorrows was losing one grandson, six-year-old Shane Tinkle, in an accident on Highway 96 in the year 1978; he was the son of Montie Williams and Steve Tinkle.
In Buck’s family are fifty surviving nieces and nephews who will serve as honorary pallbearers, and his special friends make up the active pallbearer list. They are Rick Campbell, Jason Covington, Johnny Covington, David Ginn, Steve Tinkle, Charles and Martha Rushing, David and Angela Koonce, Retha Starkey, Derek Pierce, and Joe West.
A special thank you goes to Joel McMahon and Chris Watlington, the pastor and music director at the First United Methodist Church as well as to all the members whom Buck was proud to call his “church family”. Also a special word of gratitude goes to a special friend and cousin who lives just up the road, whose employees would come and lift Buck from the floor each time he fell. Thanks, Weldon.

Joe Dan Hairgrove, 77, of Timpson, Texas, passed away August 26, 2014, in San Augustine, TX. Funeral services will be held at 10:30 AM, Thursday, August 28, 2014, at Mt. Olive Baptist Church, Timpson, with Bro. Cliff Hughes and Bro. Eric Pledger officiating. Interment will follow in Mt. Olive Cemetery.
Born April 20, 1937, in Shelby County, TX, Joe Dan Hairgrove was the son of the late Joel Otto and Leta Mae (Bowlin) Hairgrove. After graduating from Timpson High School in 1955, Joe Dan attended Henderson County Jr. College and Stephen F. Austin State University. On June 14, 1958, he and Betty Crump were married in Mt. Olive Baptist Church, and he was a faithful member there at the time of his death.
Survivors include his wife Betty Hairgrove of Timpson; son Shawn Hairgrove of Timpson;
daughters Nat Klein and husband Boo of Center, TX, Trellis McCann and husband Gary of Center, and Sutton Spieckerman and husband Jeff of Zephyr, TX; 8 grandchildren: Justin Klein and wife Tiffanne, Dakotah Klein and wife Erica, Taylor Brown, Wyatt Hairgrove, Tristan Hairgrove, Abram Hairgrove, Hadley Spieckerman, and Haley Spieckerman; 4 great grandchildren: Lieza and Liela Klein and Ryder and Drake Klein; “ just like another son” Bobby Morris and wife Tracie; and “ just like one of the grandsons” Gavin Pierce; brother-in-law Homer Tompkins of Nacogdoches; sister-in-law Cecil Hairgrove of Timpson; and a host of nieces and nephews.

Charles Albert DeGaugh, 61, of Center, passed away August 23, 2014 in Crockett.

Gwen Thomas “Skeet” Rawson, age 83, of Tenaha, Texas passed away on Sunday, August 24, 2014 in Lufkin Memorial Rehab Hospital in Lufkin, Texas following a severe illness.
A memorial service will be held at 2:00 P.M. on Thursday, August 28th, 2014 at Watson & Sons Funeral Home in Center, Texas. Prior to the memorial service, there will be a visitation held beginning at 12:00 noon, and his family invites all of his friends to attend.
“Skeet”, as he was known to his friends, was born on March 21, 1931, in San Augustine County to Thomas Blackwell Rawson and Audrey Sanders Rawson. He was the middle son of three boys. He attended Tarleton State University and graduated as a “Fighting Texas Aggie” from Texas A&M University in 1951 with a Bachelors Degree in Animal Sciences. Skeet used to say that he was at A&M when there were not any sidewalks and no girls! He was an active student at Texas A&M and served on their cattle judging team as well as a member of A&M’s national championship horse judging team. Upon graduation, he served in the United States Army.
He began living in Tenaha when he went to work for Arbor Acres Farms, a poultry and egg raising business and he later owned Tenaha Milling Company, a feed mill specializing in custom feeds and fertilizers. He worked every day there until its close.
Skeet was a member of many community organizations in Tenaha through the years, and served as a school board member and as school board President during some turbulent times in the community.
His favorite pastimes were bird hunting and he loved to raise and teach dogs and go hunting with his friends and family. He also loved to read and spent many hours enjoying classic literature as well as his favorite author, Louis L’Amour.
Skeet went by many names to many people. To his daughters and son, he was always “Daddy” and to his nephews he was Uncle “G”. Many of his business associates knew him as “G.T.” and his friends knew him as “Skeet”. His three grandchildren knew him as “PopPops” and they loved playing cards and playing catch with him.
He is survived by his wife, Analea Rawson, of Tenaha, his daughters, Renee Rawson Phillips and her husband, Kirk, of Prosper, Amanda Jackson, and her husband John, of Cayuga, and a son, Matt Rawson of Tenaha. He has three grandchildren, Jeremy Phillips, Jordan Phillips and Nathaniel Jackson. He is further survived by his three “special” nephews, Mike Rawson, Bob Rawson, and Joe Rawson. He also has one surviving brother, Dean Rawson.
He was preceded in death by his father, Thomas Blackwell Rawson, his mother, Audrey Sanders Rawson, and his beloved brother. D.D. “Ace” Rawson.

Bro. Kenneth Verner, 74, of Center, passed away Friday, August 22, 2014 at Nacogdoches Memorial Hospital.
Services will be 10:00 a.m. Monday, August 25, 2014 at New Hope Congregational Methodist Church in Center with Rev. Carl Smith and Bro. Aubie McSwain officiating. Burial will follow at New Hope Cemetery. Visitation will be Sunday, August 24, 2014 from 4:00 p.m. until 7:00 p.m. at Mangum Funeral Home.
James Kenneth Verner was born to James Walter Verner and Velma Vallie Davis Verner in Commerce, Texas on February 9, 1940. He graduated Lubbock High School in 1958 and then attended Westminster College and Bible Institute for biblical studies, where he graduated valedictorian. Kenneth met and married Laura Lee in Dallas, Texas, in 1960, and in 1963 they moved to Magee, Mississippi, where he began pastoring the Congregational Methodist Church. In 1969 he moved his family to Clute, Texas, where he pastored the Congregational Methodist Church for seven years, and then moved to Center, Texas, to pastor New Hope Congregational Methodist Church, from which he retired in 2011. He also pastored the Tennessee Presbyterian Church in Shelby County, Texas, on several occasions, and was doing so at the time of his death. After Laura passed away in 2002, Kenneth renewed an old friendship with Evelyn Lawson Meeks, who had also been recently widowed, and they married in 2003.
Kenneth was a man of many interests and talents, and he pursued those with diligence over the years. He learned carpentry skills from his father and used them throughout his life. As a young man, he was trained as a draftsman, and he applied those skills as the designer of numerous residential houses and church buildings. His early interest in fine arts permeated all of his work, and he developed these skills through courses of study at the University of Southern Mississippi in Hattiesburg, the University of Houston, and Stephen F. Austin State University, where he received a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree with a specialty in watercolor. In addition to fine arts, Kenneth worked as a commercial artist and sign painter and owned and operated JKV Art/Design.
While serving as pastor, Kenneth also served in numerous administrative roles in the larger structure of the Congregational Methodist Church. Among these, he was director of Hilltop Camp in Garrison, Texas, for over twenty years, District Conference Chairman for twenty-five years, and the member of various boards, including missions and publication. Locally, he was an active member of the Ministerial Alliance for many years.
As the eldest of six living children, Kenneth became a father figure to his siblings, who often called on him for advice or just to talk. As a husband, he was devoted and loving. As a father, he taught his sons how to work, the value of honesty and dependability, and how to care for people.
He is preceded in death by his Mother, Velma Vallie (Davis) Verner, Wife, Laura Lee Verner, Father, James Walter Verner, Brother, Gerald Eugene Verner and Infant brother, Jonathan Verner.

Funeral services for Heather Elaine Green, 24, and her unborn daughter, Emmie Jo, of Elkhart will be at 11am on Saturday, August 23, 2014, at Cedar Creek Missionary Baptist Church with Rev. Randall Reeves officiating. Graveside services will be held at 3 pm on Saturday at Mt. Comfort Cemetery near Maydelle. Heather passed away in Shelby County on Saturday, August 16, 2014, from injuries sustained in an automobile accident.
She was born March 12, 1990, in Palestine, Texas to Mark and Brenda Scott Jorgensen. Heather at 24 years old was very strong in her faith, loving God with all her heart. She reached out to people touching many lives and was always there for her friends. Her family was her life and she loved them unconditionally. Her love of animals was ever present and part of her daily life and actions. She will be missed by everyone whose life she touched. We love you Heather.
Survivors include her husband, Christopher B. Green, her daughters, Camie Capri and Victoria Grace, parents, Mark and Brenda Jorgensen, and her brother, Hayden D. Mr. Crawford passed from this life August 15, 2014 at Hospice Homeplace in Tyler. He was born October 6, 1932 in Joaquin to the late Tommy and Bessie Scott Crawford. Charles served his country in the United States Army during the Korean Conflict and later became a superintendent with an air conditioning company. He was a member and deacon at First Baptist Church and a member of the William Odom 42 Club. Charles was also a past master of Clinton Lodge #23 and was co-founder of the Rusk County Treasure Hunters Club.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by: brothers, Bud Crawford and Doug Crawford Sr.; and sister, Bennie Hutto.
Survivors include: wife of 62 years, Lou Crawford of Henderson; son, Joe Crawford and wife Susan of Tyler; brother, Tom Crawford of Henderson; grandchildren, Emily Ellis and husband Hughes, Kelcey Crawford, and Brady Crawford; and great grandson, Jace.

Graveside services for Odelle Cockrell Moore, 97, of Wells will be held Monday, August 18, 2014 at 2:00 p.m. at Brookside Memorial Park in Houston with Chaplain Bob Harbuck officiating.
Mrs. Moore was born October 27, 1916 in Joaquin, Texas to Johnny A. and Zella (Wood) Cockrell, and died Thursday, August 14, 2014 in a local nursing home. Formerly of Houston, she had resided in Wells for seven years. She was a supervisor at Southwestern Bell Telephone Co. for 30 years and was a member of the First Baptist Church of Pasadena.
Survivors include her great-niece, Sherry Conway and husband Eddie of West Columbia; great-great-niece, Hilliary Mitchell and husband Bobby; and great-great-great nephews, Keagan French, Jaymie French, Tristin Doss and Trace Doss.
She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Carl B. Moore; sisters, Betty Sapp and Lurline Stuckey; and niece, Esther King.

George Allen Goodwin Jr., 56, of Joaquin, died August 15, 2014 with his family by his side.

Mr. Goodwin was born on July 11, 1958 in La Marque to George Allen Goodwin Sr. and Pauline Edomm Goodwin. George was a member of the Old Home Baptist Church.
George was previously employed by N. L. Baroid for many years and was recognized for the design and introduction of the Mobile DWD Pulser District Flushing Rig, a tool used for downhole drilling and widely used in the oilfield industry today.
He grew up in Alvin and as a young child loved riding mini-bikes with his siblings, cousins and neighbors. He later started riding motorcycles and raced motocross, winning many trophies. George loved sailing and had a sailboat that he loved sailing in the Clear Lake/Kemah area. He also had a small Hobie Cat sailboat that he frequently took his nieces and nephews on, sailing for hours. They called him “Galby” and they would go “Hobieing”.
George will be especially remembered for his quick wit and the ability to make people laugh. He was very caring and giving. He loved to make gifts for people; making guns, knives and special mementos for family and friends.

Celia Pearl Greer, age 86, a long time resident of Center, TX went home to be with her Lord on Saturday, August 9, 2014. Ms. Greer moved to Highlands, TX in 2009, to live with a daughter, when Altzheimer’s resulted in her not being able to live alone. In June 2014 her care needs resulted in her final days at the Rehabilitation & Healtcare Center of Baytown.
Her Homegoing Celebration will be held Saturday, August, 16, 2014 at 11:00 am at Bright Morning Star Baptist Church, 623 Martin Luther King Dr., Center, TX 75935 with Pastor Lucian Taum officiating. Ms. Celia Pearl Greer was born April 3, 1928 to the late Dee Paul and Goldie Cook Dennis of Bronson, Texas. Celia Pearl was one of nine children and established herself as the boss of them ALL, at an early age. [Tommie, Curtis, Leonard, Keither, W.C., Paul Jones, Velma, Thelma]
Younger Siblings had to suffer the humiliation of being taught and reprimanded both at home and in the school setting as she started her career of teaching after she graduated from Texas College.
She wore many hats and was always involved in and heading up some project, whether Church, Community, or County. Whatever she saw that she deemed might need to be done, she readily tackled, with no fear or regard for anyone else's opinion. She taught school starting in 1947 and continuing thru 1979, in Hemphill, San Augustine, C.H. Daniels and Center Schools. She also worked at Tri-County, at Holly Farms, assumed a trash pick up business after "Dank" had suffered a stoke that disabled him, taught Adult education classes. She was active and involved in numerous community and Church endeavors. Community centers, C.H. Daniels Alumni functions, New Zion Gatsby cemetery, Westview Cemetery, Usher Board, Mission Board, Sunday School Teacher.
She was married to Delton Neil Greer on December 24,1954 at her home in Geneva, Texas by Rev G.W. Taylor and Garfield Richards was their witness. They had two daughters Regina Neil, and Leachress Anita. He preceded her in death in December 1988.
She became a member at Bright Morning Star Baptist Church, sometime between 1954 and 1957 and has maintained membership there until her passing.
She leave to cherish her memories two daughters: Regina G. Netherly of Baytown, TX, Leachress A. Dorsey of Highlands, TX. Two grandchildren: Justin Wayne Netherly and Kendall Elyse Dorsey, two sisters Thelma Carmichael and Velma Davis of Oklahoma City, Oklahoma. three brothers, Tommie Dennis (Evelyn) of Bellwood, Illinois, Keither Dennis of Rosevine, TX and Willie Charles (W.C.) Mrs. King passed away Monday in Lufkin. She was born January 6, 1928 in Joaquin, Texas to B.H. & Betty Cockrell Sapp. She lived most of her life in the San Augustine and Nacogdoches area where she worked as a nurse for numerous nursing homes. T. G. Gerald Bellmyer, 92, of Tenaha, passed away Sunday, August 10, 2014 at Nacogdoches Medical Center in Nacogdoches.

Mr. Bellmyer was born June 7, 1922 in Copan, Oklahoma to Arlie Bellmyer and Evelyn Wagaman Bellmyer. During World War II, he served in the Eighth Bomber Command of the United States Air Force. Mr. Bellmyer later became a maintenance supervisor for Charter Oil Company, where he retired after many years of service. Loving the outdoors, he spent much time farming, caring for his cattle and keeping his property in immaculate condition. Mr. Bellmyer had a special passion for his family, always including them in his daily activities. He taught both his children and grandchildren to work hard, but taught them to play hard as well. As a hobby, Mr. Bellmyer enjoyed square dancing with friends across Texas. He was a 50+ year member of the Tenaha Masonic Lodge #737.

Charles “Hutch” Hutcherson, Charles “Hutch” Hutcherson, 90, of Center, passed away Thursday, August 07, 2014 at his residence.
Services will be 2:00 p.m. Sunday, August 10, 2014 at Mangum Funeral Home Chapel with Bro. Joel McMahon officiating. Burial will follow at Oaklawn Memorial Park. Visitation will be prior to the service on Sunday beginning at 12:00 p.m. (noon) until 2:00 p.m. at Mangum Funeral Home.
He was born November 21, 1923 in Oakdale, Louisiana to William and Bertha (McKinney) Hutcherson. Revelations 14:13 tells us that “blessed are the dead who die in the Lord from now on. Yes says the spirit, they will rest from their labor, for their deeds will follow them.” It is hard for us that knew Charles Newell Hutcherson to believe that he will ever rest. However, it is not hard for us that knew Hutch to believe that he will be known for his deeds and to know that those deeds will follow him. For it is his deeds and his labors that we all remember of him.
Hutch was a man known for his work and his actions. It is the passion that he had for the work he did that we remember. Hutch began work at Center Motor Company in the spring of 1951 and he has been there ever since. Seldom was the day that a person could drive by and not see Hutch sitting at his desk in the front window. He worked Monday thru Saturday, arriving at 6:00 A.M. to make sure that the coffee was made. Hutch was even known to meet customers on Sundays if they couldn’t make it any other time because he was not going to let something like a day off cause him to miss a chance to sell a car. Often was the case that Hutch’s duty to get to work and sell a car could be attested to by Liz Ann for so many times she was awakened by an early morning phone call to bring Hutch his spare keys because he locked his in his truck quite often.
Two years after starting at Center Motor Company Hutch married the love of his life Peggy Joyce Wicker. Peggy won his heart when she would come into Center Motor Company to deliver papers. Hutch lied about his age in order not to frighten Peggy off but that was as far as his dedication to her would ever stray. In their 57 years of marriage Hutch was forever the faithful servant. Never once did Hutch raise his voice or come close to an argument with Peggy a fact that all his daughters and grandchildren attest to with great admiration.
Hutch applied that dedication and passion to the rest of his life as well. He was an avid coin collector even up to his last days, showing his newly found Elvis coin off to any one that happened to stop by for a visit. Such was his desire for collecting coins that when he was at a loss trying to come up with a name for his second daughter he chose to name her after a rare coin that had long escaped him. He found that rare coin on the day of his daughter’s birth and not one to let an opportunity to pass he named his lucky daughter Penny in honor of both of their arrivals.
His passion was also so evident in his love for his grandchildren. Teaching them to hunt, fish and appreciate the outdoors. However, like is job and his marriage, Hutch was devoted to the hunt and that meant waking at 2:00 A.M., breakfast at 3:00, and on the stand by 4:00. A tough but necessary chore if you were going to hunt with Hutch. However, the boys managed to get their fun in also. Many stories of hunting were told by family these past few days and one that stood out was when Hutch decided to take Brant and Kevin Jones to hunt one day. As they arrived at the gate, Hutch climbed out of the truck to go and open the gate, leaving Brant and Kevin in the cab of the truck with a loaded gun. Somehow these two young men managed to cause that gun to go off blowing a very large hole in the floorboard of the truck, leaving two very frightened boys. Scared of the gun that just went off but more afraid of what Hutch was going to do to them. However, to their amazement and maybe to all of yours as well, Hutch never heard that gun go off.
Hutch also loved the Super Bowl and more importantly selling squares for the super bowl board. And oh how he loved his Cowboys. Just like his dedication to be at his desk at work Monday thru Saturday, Hutch was going to be in his recliner in front of his T.V. when his beloved boys came on. A few years ago when the NFL network began televising games on Thursday nights Hutch was elated to find out his Cowboys were going to be on the first game of the season. That elation soon turned to anger when he found out that his cable provider did not carry the NFL network and that he would not be able to watch his cherished Cowboys. He was soon on the phone to Little Bit to make sure that she could get that fixed for him. And a few phone calls and one switch to satellite T.V. later Hutch was in his recliner that Thursday with his Cowboys on in front of him.
His hard work and dedication to job, family and friends was also very evident in one of his other passions, his yard and gardens. Weed eating, mowing, trimming hedges, and to everyone’s dismay blowing leaves off of the roof at his house. Without fail he would have his yard and garden worked to perfection. Still taking care of his own yard when many of his neighbors have long let others take care of it for them. So much was his dedication to his yard and garden that this past Easter, not a meal was eaten, a picture took, or an egg hunted until his grandsons figured out how to get his new tiller running so he could plow his garden. After all he had to get his vegetables planted. His many friends and neighbors were dependent on him to drop off their bags of vegetables that he left on their doorsteps on his way to work every morning.
Hutch’s life was a life well lived. He lived his life devoted to the many things that he cherished. His devotion is unmatched by any person that I know. He showed a dedication and loyalty to his job that is unheard of in today’s world. He was faithful and devoted to his wife Peggy, never once in 57 years raising his voice to her. An amazing feat when you consider how much we raise our voices and yell at the ones we love daily. He adored his 3 daughters Jayne, Penny, and Liz always keeping them close by and together in a time when families so often leave and stay in touch by phone or text they still met daily at his house to visit in person. He doted on his grandchildren Brant, Mindy, CJ, and Nathan. Always greeting them with a big smile, hug and an occasional chore to do. Just to let them know how he needed them so. And he so treasured his many great grandchildren; Samantha, Brookelynn, Peyton, Colbeigh, Cale, Connor, Cullen, Jaxon, Haleigh, and Bryleigh. Watching them play was a prized pastime he so valued. Hutch was a true friend to so many always there for others before himself. Often taking time to talk to them at the Ford place and having conversations that everyone was privileged to hear even if he couldn’t. So we should be happy for Hutch who can go and finally rest from his many labors and we and the Lord will remember him for his many good deeds.

Attorney John R. Smith, 74, of Center, passed away Wednesday, August 6, 2014 in San Augustine.

Funeral service will be held at 10:00 a.m., Saturday, August 9, 2014 at Watson & Sons Chapel with Rev. Carl Smith officiating. Interment will follow at Oaklawn Memorial Park in Center.
John Russell Smith, aka “John R,” was born in Knox County, Texas on March 31, 1940 to John Pate and Lois Louise "Honey" Smith. John R grew up in Carlsbad, New Mexico where he graduated from Carlsbad High School. While in high school, in the fall of 1957, he was the All State Quarterback for his football team and led them to winning the State Championship. He was the Vice President of the Student Council and he also played on the All State Basketball Team. His talent as an athlete prompted Texas Christian University to offer him a full basketball scholarship. After graduating from TCU, John R went to work for the State of Nevada, serving as the personnel director for the State of Nevada. While working as the director, the Governor of Nevada persuaded John R to attend law school. He graduated from South Texas College of Law in Houston, Texas in 1973. He moved to Center, Texas and began his career as an attorney. His first position was in the Law Offices of Bill Griffin. However, he soon realized he had his own way of doing things and hung out his own shingle and thus began the legendary “Law Offices of John R. Smith.” During his career, he represented clients all over the United States, in both Federal Courts as well as State Courts. He served as the elected Shelby County District Attorney for a time. However, no matter what attorney “hat” he was wearing, he always represented his clients vigorously. He never cared with whom he was arguing or who he was making mad. His first concern was always, first and foremost, his client. Up to the date of his death, he continued to practice law, seeking justice and fairness for each and every client he represented.
When not practicing law, John R loved to travel. He and his wife Cindy made yearly trips to New Mexico, Colorado, and Cancun, Mexico. John R also loved his “family” time with his beloved pets. Paco, Bogey, Maggie and Patron will miss the TLC he reaped upon them daily. He and Cindy also loved to go to the lake with their Pontoon Boat. During hunting season, it was not uncommon to see him speeding out of town, headed for the deer lease and all the tall tales he and all his hunting buddies would tell around the campfire. When he had the time, he also loved to play golf. In 2006, he entered a golf tournament at Moon Palace in Cancun, Mexico along with 300 other golfers. John R won first place and brought home prizes in excess of $15,000. He served for a time as President of the Center Country Club and was responsible for organizing and making the Calcuttas held each year at the Country Club a huge success. In his more mischievous moments (and there were many of them), he loved to “exterminate” the frogs in the beautiful pond he and Cindy built on their back patio. It is located directly under his bedroom window, and he said the frogs were too noisy and kept him from sleeping. So, regularly, he would get the Clorox bottle, dump the Clorox into the pond, and smile that John R smile as Cindy would fuss about the poor frogs.
John R was also an accomplished writer. His book “Redneck Country, Black Letter Law” was an intriguing novel and had many people in Shelby County asking when the next book would be released. He was working on three other books at the time of his death.
He was a member of the First Baptist Church and has been a member of Dr. Joe Hooker’s Sunday School Class for many years.
John R is survived by his loving wife and constant companion Cindy Conway Smith; his son John Russell Smith, Jr. and his spouse Mark Dunn of Tampa, Florida; his sisters Nancy Lambert and her husband Don of Kentucky and Rita Smith of Reno, Nevada; sister and brother-in-law Barbara Conway and Robert Earl Bailey of Nacogdoches; many other nieces, nephews, and other family too numerous to mention.
He was preceded in death by his parents John Pate Smith and Lois Louise Smith and mother and father in law, Mr. and Ms. W.O. Conway.
Pallbearers will be Phil Hennigan, Dr. Dixon Golden, Billy Bob McAdams, Josh McAdams, Don Stewart, Victor Crawford, Burley Lamb and Jerry Agnew. Honorary pallbearers will be Weldon Boles, L.V. “Toptsy” Williams, and George Bowers.

Mr. Crowley was born July 19, 1929 in Houston to Lee O’Conner Crowley and Marie Frances Branson Crowley. He served as a medic in the United States Army during the Korean War. Mr. Crowley loved to play pool, golf and sailing.

Raymond C. Payne, 92, of Laplace, Louisiana, passed away Friday, August 1, 2014 at his residence.
Funeral service will be held at 1:00 p.m., Tuesday, August 5, 2014 at Pleasant Hill Missionary Baptist Church in Shelbyville with Bro. Bobby Warr officiating. Interment will follow at Pleasant Hill Cemetery in Shelbyville. A visitation will be held one hour prior to service time.
Mr. Payne was born September 5, 1921 in Shelbyville to Hillard Payne and Lilly Metcalf Payne. He served in the United States Army during World War II as a member of the 79th Engineers Battalion. Mr. Payne was a member of Fair Park Masonic Lodge #436 in Shreveport, Louisiana.
