Joy Weaver, 95, of Center, passed away Monday, December 29, 2014 at her residence.

Visitation will be held from 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m., Thursday, January 1, 2015 at Watson & Sons Funeral Home in Center. Funeral service will be held at 2:00 p.m., Friday, January 2, 2015 at Watson & Sons Chapel. Interment will follow at Fairview Cemetery in Center.

Ms. Weaver was born May 6, 1919 in the Patroon Community of Shelby County to Dr. John Henry Ellington and Verna Laura Bell Ellington. She was a member of First Christian Church in Center.

Ouida Mae (Dent) Whiteside

Ouida Mae (Dent) Whiteside of Austin, Texas passed away August 27, 2014. She was born in Nacogdoches, Texas on February 27, 1928 to Roy B. Dent and Mary Odell (Johnson) Dent of Timpson, Texas. She grew up in Tenaha and Timpson, Texas and graduated from Timpson High School. On November 27, 1947, she married her high school sweetheart, Harold Stanley Whiteside and spent more than 52 years teaching, raising children and enjoying life together.

Ouida received her bachelor's degree in education from Stephen F. Austin State University and later earned her master's degree in educational administration. As a high school English teacher, she spent more than fifty years in the classroom touching the lives of many students, mentoring many young teachers and building countless lifelong relationships. In Austin, Ouida taught at Travis High School, McCallum High School and retired from Anderson High School in 2005.

She was a member of Trinity United Methodist Church where she was occasionally called upon to share her insights on the scriptures of the week. She truly loved teaching, literature and her family.

Ouida was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, her brother Jack Dent and her sister Rodell (Dent) Spencer. She is survived by three brothers: Roy Dent of Lake Murvaul, Texas, Troy (Kay) Dent of Ft. Walton Beach, Florida and Ted (Pat) Dent of Nacogdoches, Texas; four children: W. Robin (Pat) Whiteside of Austin, Vikki Whiteside of Midpines, CA, Marti (Ron) Willens of Pacific Palisades, CA and Stan (Tay Tanya) Whiteside of Fajardo, Puerto Rico; seven grandchildren: Gage Brown of Austin, William R. Whiteside of Austin, Brandy Whiteside (Justin Little) of Austin, Shane Ingraham of Austin, Zack (Yesika) Ingraham of Austin, Stephanie Ingraham of Los Angeles, CA and Troy Whiteside of Austin; and seven great-grandchildren: Easton Brown, Noah Ingraham, Kobe Ingraham, Kaylee Whiteside, David Whiteside, Cris Whiteside and Jaylee Whiteside.

Sid Hall of Trinity United Methodist Church will officiate at the memorial service at 11:00 am on Friday, August 29, 2014 at Weed-Corley-Fish Funeral Home, 3125 N. Lamar Blvd., Austin, Texas.

Taylor was full of life, he loved skiing, fishing & rope swings. He was a dare devil and lived life to the fullest, always with a smile, full of love and energy. He will be truly missed by his family & friends.

Spc. Cory Joseph Bertrand, 18 of Center, passed away Tuesday, October 14, 2008 while serving in the U.S. Army in Qazi Bandeh, Afghanistan during his tour of duty.

Services will be 1:00 p.m. Thursday October 23, 2008 at Mangum Funeral Home Chapel with Bro. Charles Boster officiating. Burial will follow at Pleasant Hill Cemetery in Shelbyville with full military honors. Visitation will be Wednesday afternoon at Mangum Funeral Home.

He was born November 15, 1989 in Opelousas, LA. He joined the military in January 2007. He was a member of the 1st Battalion, 26th Infantry Regiment, 3rd Brigade Combat Team, 1st Infantry Division; assigned to Fort Hood. Spc. Bertrand was awarded numerous medals and ribbons, among them are the Army Good Conduct Medal, National Defense Service Medal, Army Commendation Medal, Global War of Terrorism Service Medal, Army Service Ribbon, NATO, the Bronze Star and the Purple Heart

Staff Sergeant Kevin Casey Roberts, age 25 of Ft. Campbell, Kentucky was killed in the Sabari district of Afghanistan on May 7, 2008. His mission was to serve his country which he did proudly for six and a half years as a soldier with the 101st Airborne Division. He was assigned to Delta Company, 2nd Battalion 506th Infantry Regiment, 4th Brigade Combat Team. The events of September 11, 2001 influenced SSG Roberts' determination to defend the United States. His love of duty and love of country were undeniable. Staff Sergeant Roberts was all military, he earned the respect of officers, fellow NCOs and soldiers alike. During his service, Staff Sergeant Roberts was awarded numerous medals and ribbons. Among them are the CIB, EIB and the Army Achievement Medal, the Bronze Star and the Purple Heart.

Casey was born on May 27, 1982 in Farmington, New Mexico. He graduated from Farmington High School in 2000. Casey joined the La Plata Volunteer Fire Department and served until enlisting in the United States Army in 2001.

SSG Roberts strove to complete numerous goals during his military career. Recently he applied for the Warrant Office program. As Casey put it, "Flying has been a dream of mine since I was a little boy. My father took me along in his ultra light aircraft and told me stories about flying and even let me pilot. I grew to love flying and was fascinated by it."

The brightest lights in SSG Roberts life were his wife Donnice, daughter Caehlen and son Keeghan.

He was preceded in death by Grandparents Thurman and Emma Roberts and Jerry and Amanda Sisson. He is survived by his parents Milton C. and Gerri Sue Roberts of Farmington NM, a brother SPC Curby R. Roberts of FT Hood, TX and his children, a brother Jerry E. Roberts of Farmington, NM. Father and mother in-law Pat and Brenda Yates of Lebanon, Ohio. Grandparents Bob and Delsia Powell of Shelbyville, TX and Don and Becca Yates of New Braunfels, TX. Brother in-law Petty Officer 3rd Class Codey P. Yates, his wife and child, and numerous family members, friends and his Brothers in Arms.

Staff Sergeant Roberts will be buried with full military honors. Visitation will be held Thursday, May 15th from 4-8PM at Mangum Funeral Home, 420 San Augustine Street, Center, Texas. Funeral services will be held on Friday, May 16th at 2PM at Mangum Funeral Home Chapel. Interment will follow at West Hamilton Cemetery. Funeral arrangements are being handled by Mangum Funeral Home, 420 San Augustine Street Center, Texas, 1-936-598-3341.

A memorial for SSG Roberts will be held on Friday, May 23rd at 11 AM. The full military honors memorial will be held at First Baptist Church, 121 North Auburn Street in Farmington, New Mexico.

Larry Polley, Jr, age 20, of Center, Texas; assigned to the 2nd Battalion, 20th Field Artillery Regiment, 4th Infantry Division, Fort Hood, Texas; killed while conducting a surveillance sweep for improvised explosive devices Jan. 17, when his Bradley Fighting Vehicle struck such a device and overturned north of Taji, Iraq.

Mr. Larry Earl Polley Jr. was born February 28, 1983 in Shelby County, Center, Texas to Mr. Larry Polley Sr. and Mrs. Lois M. Harper.

Larry attended Center High School where he was a member of the Center Band playing the trumpet. He graduated with the Class of 2001.

He was a faithful member of the St. Paul Missionary Baptist Church and served as an usher and a member of the youth choir, position team.

Larry Earl Jr. was preceded in death by his grandmother, Mrs. Ester Mae Jackson, his grandfather, James Polley and his great-grandfather, James L. Polley Sr.

He leaves to mourn; his wife Sebrena Polley; three sons, Christian, Sedarion, and Jordan; father and mother, Mr. Larry Polley Sr. and Mrs. Lois Marie Harper; sister Kinta Polley; brother, Robert Harper of Bellingan, Washington; grandmother Ella Mae Polley of Center, Texas; three nephews, Shamarian Moore, Malik Patton and Domenick Moore Jr.; one niece, Requannah Patton; two special cousins, Jr. and Nikki and a host of relatives and friends.
