Martha Lou Garrett, 90, of Garrison, passed away on Wednesday, November 10, 2021 in Garrison.

Funeral services will be held at 2:00pm on Saturday, November 13, 2021 at Garrison Funeral Home with Shak Arrington officiating. Interment will follow at Cold Springs Cemetery. Visitation will be held from 5:00pm until 7:00pm on Friday, November 12, 2021 at Garrison Funeral Home.

Martha Lou Carroll was born on February 1, 1931, the daughter of Delphia Eugene and Annie Lee Shipp Carroll and raised in the only place she ever called home…Garrison, Texas. Her roots run deep in “The Oldest Town in Texas” and as a proud 1947 graduate, she was a devoted Bulldog. Martha happily remained here until she left her earthly home for the perfect place made for her in Heaven. If you asked her, Martha would tell you Garrison was the closest thing you could get to Heaven.

In 1948, she and Tommie Garrett were joined in marriage. They spent an almost perfect 50 years together and raised their children with the greatest of values. Martha Lou loved Tommie without regrets and without boundaries and was proud to call him her husband. She was a supporter to everyone around her, no matter what they were attempting to accomplish. Family was very important and she strived to be the wife, mother, grandmother and friend that everyone needed. Her love of children led her to being “Lou Lou” to many young-uns who spent years in her home as she kept them daily. She even found the time to share her heart with “Foster Grandparents”, an organization where she was able to mentor and volunteer with children at local schools. She was also an incredible special aunt to her beloved nieces and nephews. Martha, although constantly putting Jesus and her family above all else, found immense joy in cooking. She was fantastic at it and never failed to share her favorite recipes with anyone who asked. She enjoyed playing 42 and Skip-Bo and was especially admired for her beautiful flower gardens. When her favorite Texas teams were playing, (Astros and Cowboys of course) she would be found cheering them on as often as she could. With Tommie, traveling was the one thing that took them away from all the hustle and bustle of life itself. They saw many places together and made lasting memories that they both dearly cherished. She will be missed by her precious children and grandchildren but her devotion and love of all those around her will forever be remembered.

Gene Walker passed away November 11, 2021, at the age of 87.

Funeral service will be held at 3:00 p.m., Sunday, November 14, 2021, at First Baptist Church in Center with Bro. Josh Samford officiating, assisted by David Chadwick.

Gene was born, raised, worked, and retired in Center, Texas. He attended and graduated from Center High School in 1950 and went on to attend and graduate from The University of Texas with a BBA in 1954. Following his high school graduation, he served as a bookkeeper at East Texas Poultry Plant since he couldn’t get a job with companies due to the draft status of A-1. In 1954 he worked as a court reporter after a two year stay in the US Army, serving as secretary to the General of EUCOM (United States European Command). In 1958, Gene married Dolores Warr, and they had two children, Steve and Laura Walker.

As a man of God and an active member of his community, he served in many roles where he was able to touch the lives of others. Gene was an active member of First Baptist Church in Center for over 50 years where he was an ordained deacon, sang in the choir, taught Sunday School classes and participated in multiple summer trips with the youth group. Gene was an influential presence in the Shelby County 4-H drill team, helping lead the drill team to 10 state titles while he served as Drill Master and eventually went on to serve on the State Leadership Board. Gene also served as Treasurer for the Center Noon Lions Club for many years and was awarded the Distinguished Service Award by Center Chamber of Commerce.

In addition to being an essential part of the community, Gene was a loving husband, uncle, father and grandfather. His greatest joy was spending time with his grandchildren, Caitlin and Lane. They will always remember him, as a loving, caring man who went out of his way to make sure they were taken care of in all ways imaginable- from “secretly” slipping them money to making special dishes at supper just for them and even tolerating a dog at the dinner table! Caitlin will miss the early morning talks with her Papaw as he served the thinnest, crispiest grilled cheeses and made sure her milk glass stayed full. Lane will forever remember sitting on the swing in the front yard, playing their personal game where they counted the trucks and cars that passed by on the highway.

Prestene Conway McLain Weaver was born on March 9, 1933, and left this earth on Wednesday, November 10, 2021.

A celebration of life will be held at 10am on Saturday, November 13, 2021 at Strickland Funeral Home of Caldwell, 530 Hwy 36 South, Caldwell, Texas 77836

She was the third of eight children born into a loving family in the piney woods of deep East Texas. The brood of overly energetic children’s young days became the threads that stitched us together, making a quilt that wrapped and warmed us, and produced the strong sense of Conway Pride that we all have. Countless nights would be spent with the next generation sitting, in awe, listening to our parent’s tales of their younger days. This tradition has carried on through the years and we all have the gift of storytelling.

In school, Prestene excelled both academically and athletically. One of the highlights of her high school days was being named Women’s State Guard during the Class B basketball playoffs her junior and senior years. She played the clarinet and twirled for the Mighty Tiger Band. Her older brother, Odell Conway, realized her talent and purchased her a silver clarinet.

Years later, during a bathroom remodel, Preston, her father, boarded up her priceless silver clarinet in the walls... never to be seen again.

Prestene married at twenty and had three children with Ferris McCord, who would hold her heart for eternity. Ferris died suddenly in 1966 leaving her heartbroken with three young children. She made the leap and she and her sister, Jimmie, enrolled in classes at Panola Junior College.

During the difficult years ahead of working and raising babies she endured and earned a Bachelor’s Degree in History from Stephen F. Austin State University in 1973. Work, love, and family took her to every corner of this nation that she loved. During her travels, she welcomed two more children and never slowed down. The 1980s brought her full circle and she landed on native soil - her beloved Texas. This is when she discovered her life passion, teaching. For years Tene devoted her days to working with young people with learning disabilities. She strived to ignite a spark in every student that joined her class.

Coming in a strong third to her family and career was her love of hitting a hardwood floor and kicking up her heels! If someone said dance - her eyes lit up and began to twinkle. She danced any and every chance she had. She and her best friend, Miss Mrytle Calvin, made quite a stunning pair when they entered a dance hall.

Life threw her some curves along the way: she lost both her parents, 2 husbands, a son, a grandson, three brothers, two sisters, and numerous friends. Tene never gave up, she believed in working hard and giving 100% to everything she did. Her work ethic was instilled in her by her parents and she passed it along to her children. Always arrive early and never miss a day of work unless you can not drag yourself in.

Tene joined many organizations and clubs through the years: Women of the Moose, SPJST, Beta Club, Caldwell Chapter #976 OES, Ladies Auxillary to the Veteran’s of Foreign War, Ladies Petroleum Club, Lady Lions Club, Happy Feet Dance Club and even though she was not of Czech descent, she was a member in good standing of the Burleson County Czech Heritage Society.

Ferrell Laine “Doc” Bennett, 76, of Center, passed away Tuesday, November 9, 2021, in Nacogdoches.

Mr. Bennett was born November 1, 1945 in San Augustine to the late Elonzo and Mittie Ann Gillis Bennett. A graduate of San Augustine High School, he went on to serve as an engineer in the US Army, earning the Gold Conduct Medal, Vietnam Service Medal, and the Expert and Sharpshooter Badges (M14 and M16). He was honorably discharged in 1971.

He met Glenda Beth Spann at the Dairy Mart in San Augustine, and they married in 1968. They lived in the Choice community of Shelby County and had four children: Stuart, Carmen “Lisa”, Brandon and Alan. He was a great example of what a husband and father should be, not only to the children and grandchildren he loved so much, but to the youth of Shelby County as a longtime little league baseball coach.

Mr. Bennett was an employee at the Ray Craft plant in San Augustine for many years, and was a current employee of General Shelters in Center. He loved the outdoors, especially spending time fishing on the Sabine river, and believed almost anything could be fixed with a little duct tape, glue, bailing wire, and some common sense. He will be greatly missed by all who knew him.

Children:
Stuart Laine Bennett of Center
Carmen “Lisa” Coker and husband Gary of Nacogdoches
Kelvin Brandon Bennett and wife Cherry of Center

Funeral services for John Prycer Eakin will be Wednesday, November 10, 2021 at 11:00 am at Taylor Funeral Home in Timpson, Texas followed by a graveside service at Corinth Cemetery. A visitation service will be held prior to the funeral at 10:00 am on Wednesday, November 10, 2021. John Prycer was born on July 9, 1938 to John Herbert and Margaret (Prycer) Eakin and passed away on November 5, 2021 in Lufkin, Texas where he resided for over 50 years.

JP proudly served in the U.S. Army for two years and two days. The only test he claimed to have passed while in the Army, an “isolation tolerance exam” sent him to Thule, Greenland for a lonely and frigid ten months and seventeen days. He loathed cold weather and swore he would never be cold again, and as far we know, he never was.

He retired from the papermill in 1999 after 29 dedicated years of employment. Members of our household were trained to leave the phone unanswered after 10 pm on his days off so he couldn’t be summoned to work. Unfortunately, there were a couple of slip ups.

Dad had quite a way with words, and I wish I had copied down all of his signature quotes. “I’ll be a blue- nosed gopher,” or “Jesus jumping catfish” were popular in moments of disbelief. If something took too long he’d often remark “Bob was a calf, but now he’s a full grown bull.” Perhaps a favorite when referencing to the confused, “He doesn’t know if he’s scratching his clock or winding his b****.”

He was a die hard Dallas Cowboys fan and faithfully wore his cap commemorating their five Super Bowl wins regardless of the success of the current season. Dad loved bass fishing, camping, and riding motorcycles with Troy and I when we were growing up. Many childhood memories were spent camping in a blue tent, fishing in the wee morning hours, and feasting on a “jungle lunch”.

His greatest accomplishment, though, was watching his four grandchildren grow up. He felt great pride in each of their achievements and found every visit to be a priceless memory. He has instilled a deep love in all of his children and grandchildren; something that will go far beyond his earthly passing. While there is a hole in all of our hearts, one has been filled in Heaven.
