Mark Noel Adams, 60, of Center, passed away Tuesday, August 17, 2021, in Center.
A private family graveside service will be held at a later date.

Born April 25, 1961, in Kirbyville, Mark is the son of George Fane Adams and Effie Bernice Warr Adams.  He worked in the oilfield.  An avid outdoorsman, his hobbies included hunting, fishing, and caring for his dogs.  Mark was a member of White Rock Missionary Baptist Church in Center.

Joe Lawrence Nickle, 52, Shreveport, LA died Saturday, August 14, 2021at 11:39 am in Willis Knighton North, Shreveport, LA after more than a month of trying to recover from a COVID infection. His son, Cameron and Cameron’s fiance’, Ashley, were by his side.

Joe was born on January 26,1969, the middle child of The Reverend Dyson Venn Nickle, Sr. and Jane Routh Nickle in Longview, Texas. He was a 1987 graduate of Center High School, Center, Texas. Over the years he has worked as an EMT, photographer, insurance salesman, limo driver and oil rig repairman. Most recently he was 1 week away from completing the training to be a train conductor for KCS Railroad. He was best known as FotoJoe, everyone’s favorite photographer. He has taken pictures for schools, seniors, beauty queens, sports teams, concerts, weddings, the Barksdale Air Show and more.

Joe loved spending time with family and friends. Anyone who met him knows that Joe’s personality would command the room. He was warm and inviting and made everyone feel like they were family. He was a phenomenal story teller. He was able to pop jokes into just about any conversation. Joe never met a stranger. He was the life of the party. He tried to put a smile on everyone’s face. And, if you talked with Joe very long, you would know that his pride and joy was his son, Dr. Cameron Alexander Nickle, PhD.

Preceded in death by his parents, The Reverend Dyson Venn Nickle, Sr. and Jane Routh Nickle.

Perry Anthony Pugh, 62, of Joaquin, passed away Tuesday, August 17, 2021, in Shreveport, Louisiana.

Visitation will be held from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m., Thursday, August 19, 2021, at Watson and Sons Funeral Home in Center. Funeral service will be held 2:00 p.m., Friday, August 20, 2021, at Watson & Sons Chapel. Interment will follow at Joaquin Cemetery in Joaquin.

Born February 16, 1959, in Shreveport, Louisiana, Perry is the son of Allen Robert Pugh and Reva Belsha Pugh. He retired from the City of Joaquin and also served as Chief of Joaquin Volunteer Fire Department from 2010 until present.

Herman Missionary Baptist Church in Center. His hobbies included fishing, playing the guitar, and loving his grandkids, most of all spreading God’s word.

Bettye Hitchcock Grimsley, 90, died on Aug 15, 2021. Bettye was born on May 27, 1931 to Jesse A. Hitchcock and Elenora Phillips Hitchcock in the Providence Community of Burleson County Texas. She was the sixth of seven children and graduated from Caldwell High School in 1948.

After graduation, Bettye attended the Texas Business University Southwestern Branch in Houston. In 1949 she began working at the Houston office of the Hershey Company. There she met her future husband, Sergeant Choron A. Grimsley, who was a career NCO stationed at the Air Force recruiting office located in the same building. In October 1952 they were married and in 1953 had their only child, Gerald Randolph Grimsley. Soon afterwards, the Grimsleys were transferred to Goose Bay Labrador for a two year tour of duty, and after a brief return to Houston, again transferred to Eielson Air Force Base near Fairbanks, Alaska, this time for a three year tour.

Bettye’s husband retired from the Air Force in 1962 and the family moved to Denver, Colorado. In Denver Bettye’s skills as a seamstress became widely known. Working out of her home, she always had customers coming and going. Here she also developed a keen interest in birds and bird watching, a hobby she pursued for the rest of her life.

In 1990 Bettye and Choron returned to Texas, living on Choron’s family property in the Short Community near Center, Texas. There Bettye continued sewing for folks and looking at birds. Bettye especially enjoyed visits from local friends she had made in the E Texas area. She attended the Short United Methodist Church.

Bettye is survived by:

Son Gerald and his wife Janet

As well as numerous nieces, grand nieces, nephews and grandnephews. She was preceded in death by her parents, her siblings, and her husband.

Stuart Wayne Stanley, age 56, passed away in Houston on August 7th, 2021. His wife Mariana Oyanguren of 25 years and son Christian Connor were at his side.

Stuart graduated from Stephen F. Austin with a Bachelor's Degree in Radio, TV and Film. He received his Master's Degree from the University of New Hampshire. 

His work career included reporting for ABC Channel 13 News, the Communications Department at New Caney ISD, and was a Professor of Marketing and Public Relations at the University of Houston.

Timothy Lane Pate, 60, of Timpson, Texas, passed away peacefully on August 10, 2021 in Timpson, Texas. He was born on August 27, 1960 in Center, Texas, to the late Arvel and Dorothy Faye (Hendricks) Pate. Tim grew up in the Waterman and Huber communities of Timpson, Texas.  He graduated from Timpson High School in 1978.  Tim enjoyed boxing in his younger years and was known as a gentle giant.  Tim met the love of his life at a volleyball tournament and just fell head over heels for her.  He and Cheryl were married on Christmas day in 1994.  They enjoyed 26 wonderful years together before he was called home.  Tim worked for the county and retired after 18 years working as a heavy equipment operator.  Tim and Cheryl had a daughter, Chelsea, and she was the light of her daddy’s eye.  Tim loved to garden with his grandchildren, Brooklynn and Johnny.  He enjoyed just about any kind of music, especially 80s and 90s rock.  Tim loved watching Gunsmoke and The Andy Griffith Show.  Tim, or “TL” as he was known by his friends, will be greatly missed by all who knew him.

Born October 10, 1947, in Timpson, Michael is the son of Paul Charles McGhen and Annie Lavern Permenter McGhen.  He joined the United States Marine Corps, where he served 10 years.  Later, Michael worked as a maintenance man for 32 years.

Ralph Aaron Miller, 61, of Timpson, Texas, passed away peacefully on August 5, 2021 in Nacogdoches, Texas. He was born on July 23, 1960 in Pontiac, Michigan, to the late Delmar Ralph and Darlene June (Carter) Miller.

Ralph grew up in Michigan and joined the Army after graduating from high school. While stationed in Germany he met Eleanor, a Drill Sergeant. They dated for 3 years and finally joined as one in 1985. While they were dating, they were always stationed together but after getting married the Army stationed them in different parts of the world. During their marriage they had seven beautiful children together and also fostered 15 children. He was a dedicated family man and loved his children with all he had. After the Army, Ralph, or Aaron as Eleanor called him, went to work for General Motors as a robotics engineer. He retired from GM and worked for a short time with Tyson.

Ralph enjoyed quick draw and shooting targets. He also had hobbies that included carpentry and leatherwork. Ralph was good with his hands and was said to be too smart for his own good. But he had a great love for traveling with his grandchildren. All 14 grandchildren loved their “Poppy” with all their heart. Ralph was totally dedicated to his children and grandchildren. They were his whole life.

Gary Edwin Winfree entered his heavenly home on August 6, 2021, in San Marcos, Texas. He was born on September 17, 1950, in Shreveport, Louisiana, to Otis Winfree II and Mozelle Black Winfree. 

Funeral services will be at 10:00 AM on Wednesday, August 11, 2021, at Laird Funeral Home with Gene Tatum officiating. Interment will follow at Sunset Memorial Park. Visitation will be held from 5:00 PM to 7:00 PM on Wednesday, August 10, 2021, at the funeral home. 

Gary grew up in Tenaha where he graduated from high school and spent his early childhood years. After graduation, he attended Stephen F. Austin State University where he was a member of the Delta Sig Fraternity and eventually attained a Masters Degree is Counseling. For many years, he served as a counselor at Texas Rehab Services, counseling those in need and helping many lives throughout his career. Gary was an avid reader and collected comic books for many, many years, building an enormous collection. He enjoyed movies of all kinds and listened to classic 70’s and 80’s music. Gary never met a stranger – he could talk to anyone about anything for hours on end, and never get bored. 

Gary met his beautiful wife, Teri, when they were just 14 years old at church camp. Though Gary had quite the crush on Teri, a relationship was not born until later in their lives, when one day things aligned just right and they were married in 1991. For 30 wonderful years, Gary and Teri took on the world as a team, helping raising each other’s children together, and always showing love to either parents step-child. Gary adored his daughter, Jenny; showing the utmost devotion and fatherly love one could. Family was incredibly important to Gary – his children (blood and step) were showered with love and tenderness. You’d best bet his grandchildren won’t go a day in their lives with any doubt that he loved them!

Born April 2, 1932, in Shelby County, Elbert is the son of Drew H. Bailey and Gladys Johnson Bailey.  He retired as a fork lift operator. Elbert was a member of United Church of God for over 56 years.

Christopher Lee Mayhorn, 42, of Hazen, Arkansas, passed away Thursday, August 5, 2021, in Little Rock, Arkansas.

Visitation will be held from 7:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m., Wednesday, August 11, 2021, at Watson and Sons Funeral Home in Center. Funeral service will be held 2:00 p.m., Thursday, August 12, 2021, at Watson & Sons Chapel with D.J. Dickerson officiating. His wishes were to be cremated following the services.

Born November 26, 1978, in Laurel, Mississippi, Christopher is the son of Patrick Gandy and Donna Reuther Gandy.  In his youth, he was a member of both JROTC and FCA. He became a correctional officer and also served as a firefighter. Christopher attended Tenaha Church of Christ.

Keith Powdrill was born in San Antonio, TX and died Sunday, August 1, 2021 at his daughter’s home. He died peacefully in his sleep.

As a young boy the Powdrill’s moved from San Antonio, TX to Huffman, TX on Lake Houston. Keith was proud of his accomplishment of never missing a day of school from kindergarten through 12th grade. He graduated in 1979 from Huffman Hargrave High School and attended Southwest Texas State University in San Marcos, TX.

Keith then went on to live in Longmont, CO, and Cody, WY, before settling in Timpson, TX for the rest of his life.

Keith’s working career began at The Brown School in San Marcos, TX. He continued at Texas School for the Deaf, Austin, TX; Cody Ranch Resort, Cody, WY; and Railserve Inc., Longview, TX.

Keith enjoyed golfing, fishing at the pond, and bird watching. He looked forward to camping primitively and road trips where he often met up with longtime friends.

From an outpouring of his friend’s memories he was remembered as being “the connection, the glue that stuck his friends together.” Keith “made friends easily and he seemed to be the center of a wide circle of friends.”

At the Brown School in the 80’s and 90’s he was thought of as “a good friend and had a great rapport with the school population, the kids loved and respected him. He was the type of guy to leave a mark on colleagues even after he was gone.”

Keith’s infectious laugh and sly sense of humor brought smiles to the faces of family and friends. He had lots of adventures and good times over the years.  Keith was a good neighbor and thought of as a brother to some. He loved to laugh and enjoyed life. He was remembered as someone who truly cared about others. Kara and Kylie were always his pride and joy.

Keith was preceded in death by his parents Howell Lee Powdrill and Geraldine (Gerry) Lovelady Powdrill and uncle Johnny Ray Renfro of Timpson, TX.

Leon Searcy, 89, of Pasadena, Texas passed away on August 5, 2021 in Pasadena Texas. He was born on October 14, 1931, in Geneva County Alabama to Isom Byrd Searcy and Rena Mae Mullen Searcy. A graveside service will be at 11:00 AM on Tuesday August 10,2021 at Fairview Cemetery in Center, Texas with Linda Searcy officiating.

While serving in the Navy during the Korean War, Leon married Giovanna Mooney of Center, Texas. After the war, they moved to Dallas, Texas where he attended electronics school while working for Red Ball Motor Freight. He transferred and became an agent for Red Ball Motor Freight in Center, Texas during the early to mid 1960’s. During this time, he was offered a Logistics Specialist position at NASA in Houston, Texas where he worked on Gemini, Apollo, and Skylab. After leaving NASA he entered the medical freight and transportation industry where he became Logistics Manager of several hospital systems.

Leon was elected City Councilman District G for the City of Pasadena and served multiple terms with a short stint as Mayor Pro-Tem. During his tenure as City Councilman, he was most noted for his representation in the “Sister Cities” program where he traveled to Hadono, Japan on numerous occasions and made many long-lasting friendships fostering a sense of partnership and community within Pasadena and abroad. In addition to traveling to Japan, he was most noted for securing the funds to build a new park in Pasadena “Crenshaw Park” where families were able to enjoy an environment that allowed them to fish and enjoy the outdoors in a brand new fully equipped park facility.

Leon had a passion for people and family. He was a humble man that was genuine, kind-hearted, and sincere and never met a stranger. Every person he encountered during his life’s journey can speak of the positive memories he left with them.

Velma Harper Jackson, 76 of Center, passed away July 30, 2021. On August 12, 1944, Velma Rae Harper was born to the union of WC and Earlie Harper.

Funeral service is 11am Saturday, August 7, 2021 at Abundant Love Ministries in Center. Interment is at Westview Cemetery with Pastor Arthur Young giving the eulogy.

She accepted Christ at an early age and was baptized at St. Paul Baptist Church in Center, Texas. She enjoyed being a Registered Nurse and she loved her family and having a good time. Velma graduated from Center High School.

She was preceded in death by her parents WC and Earlie Harper; her two sisters, Betty Ruth Lathan and Thelma Rae Ratcliff; and brother R.C. Harper.
