Jerrold “J.W.” Hughes, 78, of Center, passed away Saturday, October 31, 2020, in Tyler.

Graveside service will be held at 11:00 a.m., Monday, November 2, 2020, at Oaklawn Memorial Park in Center with visitation beginning at 10:00 a.m., at Watson & Sons Funeral Home. Bro. Gordon Vaughn will officiate.

Born February 27, 1942, J.W. is the son of the late Vernice Hughes and Myrtle Holicer Hughes. He was of the Baptist faith.

Robert H. Burns, 77, of Timpson, TX passed away on October 29, 2020. Mr. Burns was born May 21, 1943 to the late William H. and Clarice (Bates) Burns.

Visitation will be held Sunday, November 1, 2020 from 3-5PM at Taylor Funeral Home in Timpson, TX. Funeral service will be on Monday, November 2, 2020 at 11AM at Taylor Funeral Home with interment to follow at Woodlawn Cemetery in Timpson, TX.

Robert was a loving husband and a dedicated father. He enjoyed hunting and fishing, tending to cattle and working on the farm. He loved a good game of Texas Hold ‘Em and spending time with his friends and family. He was an avid reader and had checked out 395 books from the new library in Timpson alone. Robert was of the Baptist faith and a member of New Hope Baptist Church in Gary, TX.

Nita Jo Fleming, 86, of Timpson, Texas, passed away peacefully on October 31, 2020 in Center, Texas. She was born on June 18, 1934 in Timpson, Texas, to the late Walter Pike and Alma (Croombs) Pike. Funeral service will be at 2:00 PM on Monday, November 2, 2020 at First Baptist Church, Tenaha with Bro. John Whitworth officiating. Internment will follow at Corinth Cemetery, Timpson, Texas.

Visitation will be held at First Baptist Church, Tenaha on Monday, November 2, 2020 beginning at 1:00 PM until service time.

Nita was raised in Timpson, Texas. She attended and graduated Timpson High School Class of 1953. After graduation she met the love of her life, Earl Van Fleming, and the two were married on September 18, 1954. They soon moved to Tenaha, Texas and the two raised two children, Ronnie and Greg. She and Earl spent over 44 wonderful years together before his passing in 1998. Jo was a loving mother, sister, grandmother, and great grandmother. She enjoyed sewing, and crocheting. She was a past Worthy Matron of Eastern Star in Timpson and Tenaha. She loved her family and enjoyed spending time with those she adored. Jo loved the Lord and served him through First Baptist Church Timpson growing up and First Baptist Church Tenaha.

Clayton Joseph Russell, Sr., affectionately known to all as CJ, passed away on Wednesday, October 28th, 2020, in Center, TX.

CJ was born to Rayford and Betty Russell in Port Arthur, TX on February 15th, 1957. He was the oldest of 4 siblings. He attended Nederland schools graduating with the class of 1975. He started working for Groves Equipment Rental prior to graduation and worked with them for 20 years. He loved hunting, fishing and spending time with his children. It didn’t matter where CJ was, he never met a stranger.

Mary Ann Owens, 82 of Center, passed away Wednesday, October 21, 2020 at Nacogdoches Medical Center. She was born to the late Claude Edwards and Irene Jones on March 13, 1938.

Visitation is Friday from 12 noon until 6pm at Community Funeral Home of Center. A private service is Saturday, October 31 at 11am at Westview Cemetery in Center. Interment is at Westview Cemetery in Center with Rev. Calvin Baker officiating.

Mary Ann was a member of Mount Zion Baptist Church during her early years of living in Orange, Texas. She was a licensed barber (Orange, TX), a member of the W.I.B.C. Women's International Bowling Commission (Orange, TX) and retired with 28-years of service as a Rural Carrier for the United States Postal Services in Orange, Texas.

After moving to Center, Texas, she continued our father's legacy running the family store known as "Claude's Cafe," which has been in this community for over 60-years. She loved family, bowling, fishing, and music.

Mary Ann was the second oldest of 11 siblings. She is preceded by one brother, James Earl Edwards of Center; three sisters, Jacqueline Ann Edwards of Center, Magie Mae Bryant of Houston, and Dorthy Faye Bailey of Dallas.

Nina Hughes, 82, passed away on October 28, 2020 at home in Center, TX, surrounded by her loving family. Mrs. Hughes was born February 12, 1938, in Timpson TX to the late Robert and Mildred Zella Ramsey Billingsley.

Nina retired from for the Shelby County Courthouse license department after years of serving the public, which she loved. After retiring she enjoyed riding the four-wheeler, fishing, hunting and berry picking with her grandchildren. She taught her older granddaughters to cook and can home grown vegetables and how to make homemade jelly. She also taught her daughter-in-laws to make her famous chicken and dressing.

On the morning of June 30, 2020, Norma Faye Ramsey, of Dallas, Texas, died at the age of 86. Norma was born to John and Ida Ramsey in 1933 in Logansport, Louisiana, as the youngest of nine children.

She was preceded in death by her parents and eight siblings: Doris “Billie” Ramsey Jordan, Edythe L. Ramsey Cardin, Oneda “Chink” Ramsey Gorden, Leora Ramsey Meador, Annie Sue Ramsey Hooper, John Williams Ramsey, Rhoda L. Ramsey David, and Ruth E. Ramsey Loper Diamont.

She is survived by several nieces and nephews and many long-time friends.

Norma Fay worked at Bell Telephone Company, first in Tyler and then in Dallas, for many years before an early retirement allowed her the time to develop a home-based cookie business and expertise with watercolor painting. She was a long-time member of Park Cities Baptist Church in Dallas and is greatly missed by her family and friends. She practiced her Christian faith on a daily basis, coming to the aid of those in need who were without a social agency to help them. Lending a helping hand to the less fortunate among us was a part of her character and routine, regardless of other demands and obligations. While she gave generously to several charities, she quietly went above and beyond the call of duty.

Norma Faye chose to be cremated and will be placed at Brookland Cemetery in Haslam. The service will be at 11:00 AM October 31st. Norma’s great nephew, Bro. Jody Hooper will officiate.

Arthur Eugene Muckleroy, 83, of Timpson, Texas passed away on March 12, 2020 in Nacogdoches, Texas. Born February 3, 1937, in Houston, Texas, to the late George Vreelan Muckleroy and Robetta (Cabeen) Muckleroy. Memorial service will be held at 10AM on Saturday, October 24, 2020 at Taylor Funeral Home, Timpson, Texas with Bro. Gerald Edwards officiating.

Arthur “Gene” Muckleroy was born and raised in Houston, Texas. He attended Reagan High School. He later joined the United States Navy and served his great country on the USS Midway for 4 years. When he returned, he made his home in Shelby County. He married Oneita Rhodes in 1964 and the two spent many wonderful years together until her passing.  Gene was a truck driver for over 35 years. He enjoyed motorcycles.  He was a member of Mt. Olive Baptist Church.

William Todd Birdwell, age 52, of Bronson, Texas, passed away Sunday, October 18, 2020, at his residence.

A longtime area resident, he was born Oct. 3, 1968, in Bronson, Texas, to parents Mabel Lois (Dickerson) and Tex Birdwell Sr. Todd had worked several years as pipeliner and was an avid outdoorsman, having a great love for fishing and hunting. He was a member of the NRA and had united with Magnolia Springs Baptist Church, where he was baptized several years ago. Todd enjoyed writing songs and poetry.

Robert Page Provine, 74, of Garrison, Texas passed away Friday, October 16, 2020, in Nacogdoches, Texas.  Born July 16, 1946, in Waco, Texas, to the late Truman Provine and Bernice (Shotwell) Provine.

A memorial service will be held at 2PM on Monday, October 19, 2020 at Garrison Funeral Home with Bro. Jerry Kirby officiating.

Visitation will be prior to the service beginning at 1PM on Monday, October 19, 2020 at Garrison Funeral Home.

Robert was born and raised in Waco, Texas. He graduated from Waco High School and attended Sam Houston State University. He worked for a large department store in which he as transferred to New Orleans. A little while later, Robert was transferred to Lufkin, Texas, where he met the love of his life, Susan Boatman, while working together at the department store he transferred to. The two married on May 22, 1971, and spent over 49 years together before his passing. They raised one son, Stephen Provine, and made there home in Garrison, Texas. He loved his wife and family and enjoyed each moment with them. Robert was very talented and could do many things. Although he worked for others most of his life, he and Susan owned a grocery store in Garrison many years. Robert enjoyed playing cards and a good game of pool with family and friends. He loved the Lord and was a member of Cold Springs Baptist Church, Garrison.

Vivian Jernigan, 97, of Center, passed away Wednesday, October 14, 2020, in Center.

A private family burial was held at Old Salem Cemetery. She was laid to rest beside her husband and brother.

Mrs. Jernigan was born November 3, 1922, in San Augustine County, to Jim Sharpton and Mattie Sharpton Gilchrist.  She went on to fulfill a career in teaching. Mrs. Jernigan was a member of White Rock Missionary Baptist Church.

Jack Wallace Denby, 81, of Center, passed away Tuesday, October 13, 2020, in Tenaha.

Visitation will be held from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m., Monday, October 19, 2020, at Watson & Sons Funeral Home in Center. Graveside service will be held at 10:00 a.m., Tuesday, October 20, 2020, at Pleasant Hill Cemetery in Shelby County with Bro. Lamar Denby and Bro. Gordon Vaughn officiating.

Born May 14, 1939, Jack is the son of the late Clifford Reeves Denby and Versie Viola Denby. He worked as a chicken farmer and truck driver. Mr. Denby was a member of Mt. Pleasant Baptist Church in Shelbyville.
