Gary Bobcats Gymnasium, Thursday, December 12, 2019 –
Tenaha, Timpson, and Joaquin High Schools all won their opening round tournament pool play games at Gary High School’s Invitational Basketball Tournament. The tourney will continue through Friday and conclude on Saturday.
The Timpson Lady Bears won 49-32 over the Beckville Lady Bearcats. Timpson held a 31-16 advantage at the midway intermission. Six third-quarter points by Emma Ramsey helped Timpson increase their lead to 40-24 by the start of the final period. Ramsey had 11 points on the night. McKenzie Wynn led Timpson with 12 points for the game. Timpson Lady Bears Coach Bryan Braddock got little rest as he pulled double-duty and coached the Bears Boys Varsity team in the very next game versus the Douglass Indians.
The Bears also came out victorious with a 48-35 win. Braden Courtney led the Bears with 16 points. The Bears trailed twice in the first quarter and only led 14-13 going into the second stanza. Timpson led 21-16 at the half after only allowing the Indians 3 points in the second frame. Timpson never trailed in the second half.
The Tenaha Lady Tigers were able to overpower the Broaddus Lady Bulldogs by a 47-27 score in their opening round pool playoff.
The Joaquin Lady Rams got explosive offensive play by JJ Bass and Riley Sherrod. Bass hit seven 3-pointers for 21 points for the day. Sherrod added 18 points. The two combined for 39 points of Joaquin’s 42 points as Joaquin beat the Big Sandy Lady Wildcats 42-23.
Tuesday, December 10, 2019 at Center Roughriders Gymnasium –
The Center Roughriders won two of three boy’s basketball games over the visiting Central Heights Blue Devils on Tuesday.
The Center ninth grade team led just 29-25 in the final two minutes of the fourth quarter but they went on an 8-0 scoring run which gave them a 37-25 win at the conclusion of the contest.
The Roughriders Junior Varsity led the Blue Devils by only 17-16 at half. The two teams saw the game tied at 26-26 by the end of the third stanza. Central Heights outscored Center 9-7 points in the final quarter to take the 35-33 win.
In varsity non-district action Center got three early buckets from Jumarcus McCollister which helped them take a 13-8 lead over Central Heights by the end of the first quarter. The Blue Devils cut the ‘Riders lead to just four points by halftime and the third period started with Center ahead 23-19.
Center’s Makel Johnson got hot shooting in the second half and helped the Roughriders build a 36-30 lead by the end of the third frame. Johnson eventually led the ‘Riders for scoring on the night with 20 points followed by teammate Jumarcus McCollister with 12.
The fourth quarter saw Center outscore the Blue devils 17-12 during the final frame. The ‘Riders took away a 53-42 win which moved their early season record to 5-6.
The Roughriders are coached by Hiram Harrison and they play next in a tournament at Central Heights this weekend and JV will travel to a Nacogdoches tournament. The Riders play Pleasant Grove at home on January 13th.
Center’s Varsity Boys team is now 5-6 their first District 20 4A game will at Carthage on January 17, 2019.
Nacogdoches Dragons Stadium, Friday, November 29, 2019 –
The Joaquin Rams varsity football team saw their 2019 season come to an end when Groveton defeated them 42-28 during Friday’s Region III elimination game at Nacogdoches High School. The Rams year ended with them holding an 11-3 overall record. The Rams were the second-place representative of District 11 2A and had a conference record of 5-1. Groveton stands at 12-2 and will face off next week with 13-0 San Augustine for the Region III title game.
The Groveton Indians took possession of the football first and drove the ball 72 yards for the first score of the game. Cade Steubing scored on a quarterback keeper run which covered the final 11 yards of the drive with 8:47 minutes left in the first quarter. Trent Torregrossa added an extra-point kick to give the Indians a 7-0 lead.
The Indians recovered an onside kick on the next play but Joaquin’s defense held on the next GHS drive and forced them to punt the ball away. It was an excellent punt that pinned Joaquin down at their own 1-yard line. Joaquin went the full 99-yards in 8 plays on a scoring drive which saw Connor Bragg score on a 68-yard run to paydirt. Jesus Bravo added an extra point kick which tied the game 7-7 with 3:06 left in the opening stanza.
Groveton retook the lead when they scored with just 29 seconds left in the first period. Another Torregrossa extra point gave the Indians a 14-7 advantage. This time Joaquin covered the Indian’s onside kick attempt and took over possession just 46 yards from the endzone. Lorenzo Lane wasted no time helping the Rams tie the game at 14-14, as he took a first-down carry 46 yards for the game-tying touchdown with just 16 seconds left in the opening frame.
Torregrossa grabbed a pass from Steubing for a 26-yard score with 9:56 left in the second quarter to give the Indians a 21-14 advantage. Another touchdown reception by GHS receiver Zach Fisher helped Groveton take a 28-14 lead at the 3:06 mark of the second quarter.
Joaquin drove for 50 yards and eventually a score on a 1-yard keeper run by Chandler Pritchett with 7:43 left in the third quarter. The Rams trailed GHS 28-21.
Groveton eventually claimed the next two scores of the contest ballooning their lead to 42-21 by the start of the four quarter. Joaquin continued to fight and Lorenzo Lane scored the game’s final touchdown with just 40 seconds remaining in the contest.

The Joaquin Rams varsity football team shocked the unbeaten Alto Yellowjackets by defeating them by a 25-21 score last Friday. The Rams now have a 10-2 season mark and move on to their next playoff matchup with Groveton High School at 7 p.m. next Friday, November 29, 2019, at Nacogdoches High School's Dragons Stadium.
Senior Connor Bragg scored the first touchdown of the night in the first quarter and the Rams boosted their lead to 8-0 with a 2-point conversion. Alto scored later in the period on a 68-yard touchdown run by junior Vidareous High late in the first stanza to cut the JHS lead to 8-6.
Harmon West scored Alto’s second touchdown of the night with just 56 seconds left in the first half. AHS took a 14-8 advantage into the halftime intermission.
Joaquin got 3 points when Jesus Bravo booted a 32-yard field goal through the uprights with 3:40 left in the third quarter. This cut the Alto lead to just 14-11.
Alto extended their lead to 21-11 with 10:45 left in the fourth quarter when West scored on a goal line run.
Bragg scored his second touchdown on a 38-yard run with 9:49 remaining in the game to pull the Rams to within three points of Alto. The Rams trailed 21-18.
Loreno Lane plowed into the endzone from 3 yards out for the final score of the day with 5:24 remaining in the contest. The Rams defense was able to hold on the Ram’s 25-21 advantage for the remainder of the game.
Coach Wade Lawson and his staff will prepare the Rams for a tough Region III game against the Groveton Indians (10-2) on Friday. Groveton beat Big Sandy by a 39-32 score last week.
Alto’s season ended with their record at 12-1.
November 22, 2019 - The Center Roughrider basketball boys will be traveling to Rusk on Friday, November 22 to play. The 9th grade boys will play at 5pm and JV boys will play at 6:15pm in the auxiliary gym. Varsity boys will play at 6:15pm in the main gym.
The Riders versus Jacksonville game times have been changed as well. The 9th grade plays at 12 noon, JV at 1:30pm, and varsity at 3pm at Lon Morris College. The gym is located at 811 Farnsworth, Jacksonville, Texas.
Tenaha Special Events Center, Tuesday, November 18, 2019 –
The Tenaha Lady Tigers Varsity Basketball Team took a 42-32 home win over the Center Lady Roughriders in a hard-fought pre-district game. Center got five first-quarter points from senior forward Ja’Kayla Parks which helped them lead 5-4 at the end of the first quarter. Tenaha outscored Center 10-7 in the second period and took a narrow 14-12 lead into the midway intermission.
The Lady Tigers were able to outpace Center by a 14-8 point margin in the third stanza which gave them a 28-20 lead headed into the final quarter. The Lady ‘Riders were not able to chip away at the THS lead as the Lady Tigers scored 14 points to the Lady ‘Riders 12 in the final stanza.
Center’s top scorer for the night was Ja’Kayla Parks with 13 points. Tenaha was led by Kamari Gray and Jonisha Thompson with nine points each.
The Lady Tigers will head to Colmesneil next Monday, November 25, 2019 for a 1 p.m. tipoff with the Lady Bulldogs.
The Lady Roughriders will host the Garrison Lady Bulldogs at Roughriders’ Gymnasium Friday, November 22, 2019 at 6 p.m.
Center High School Library, Monday, November 18, 2019 –
Monday saw Center senior student athletes Jasmine Cooks and Kalei LaRock sign college letters of intent to attend North East Texas Community College of Mount Pleasant.
Center Roughriders Athletic Director Scott Ponder opened the ceremony activities with several dozen faculty, media, students and relatives in attendance.
Jasmine Cooks is starting pitcher for the Lady ‘Riders and plans to major in psycology and also minor in Criminal Justice. When asked where she plans to play next year she stated, “Pitching or anywhere that needs a position filled.” She said about the college, “We met the students and faculty while touring campus and it felt a lot like Center!”
Kalei LaRock plans to major in psycology as well. She plans to play first or third base but is a versatile player capable of being used wherever there’s a need. LaRock said, “Mount Pleasant and the college made us feel welcome and it feels like a second home.”
