The Tenaha Tigers varsity football team suffered a tough District 11 2A loss at home to the Beckville Bearcats by a 35-28 score. This game was Tenaha’s second loss of the season and dropped their conference mark to 1-1. The Tigers season record is 4-2.

Tenaha deferred the kickoff after winning the coin toss. They dodged a bullet when a Bearcat 31-yard field goal attempt sailed wide with 8:30 left in the first quarter.

The Tigers could not gain a first down on their first possession and punted the ball back to the Bearcats who took over at midfield. Beckville scored on an 8-play drive which saw them take a 7-0 lead after Matt Barr ran into the endzone from three yards out for the score with 3:58 left in the first period.

Beckville stopped Tenaha once again on their next drive and the Tigers punted the football back to BHS with two and a half minutes left in the first quarter. Beckville wasted no time as quarterback Ryan Harris hit Barr for a 35-yard touchdown reception with 1:15 still left in the opening frame. The Bearcats went up 14-0.

Harris found Evan Allen for a second touchdown strike which put Beckville up 21-0 with seven minutes left in the second quarter.

Tenaha got on the scoreboard when Jordan Marshall caught a 16-yard touchdown pass with 4:39 left in the second stanza. Manuel Loredo added an extra point kick to cut the Bearcat’s lead to 21-7.

Beckville punted the ball back to Tenaha with 2:30 left before halftime. The Tigers mounted a scoring drive which saw Michael Hogg come down with a 4-yard touchdown reception with just 18 seconds left before the midway intermission. Tenaha trailed 21-14 at halftime.

The Tigers tied the game 21-21 when Jeremy Patton took control by rushing the football on four straight carries for a touchdown drive which covered 78 yards and was capped off with a 22-yard scoring run.

Beckville regained the lead when the Bearcats completed a touchdown pass on a reverse back to the quarterback who found the endzone. This gave BHS a 28-21 lead with 11:52 left in the final quarter.

The Bearcats executed a 41-yard touchdown strike from Harris to Barr with 8:02 left in the game to gain a 35-21 advantage. Tenaha scored the final touchdown when Hayden Jenkins hit Tray Tutt for a 15-yard touchdown reception with 6:18 left in the contest. This brought the Tigers to within striking distance of the Bearcat with the score at 35-28.

The Tigers recovered a fumble with five minutes remaining but BHS was able to stall their final drive and hold on for the win.

Tenaha rushed for 266 yards on 32 carries. They completed 12 passes on 24 attempts for 103 yards. Tenaha gained 17 first downs and lost a fumble and were intercepted once. They were given 7 penalties for 70 yards.

The Bearcats carried the ball 37 times for 233 yards. Went 4 for 5 on passing attempts for 94 yards. They gained 13 first downs and lost two interceptions and a fumble. They were given five penalties for 35 yards.

The Tigers will enjoy an open bye week for October 11 and will next travel to Harleton High School where they will face the Wildcats on Friday, October 18 at 7:30 p.m.

October 2, 2019 - The Battle of the Pineywoods Event was held in Lufkin, Texas on September 7, 2019. This was an Texas Amateur Organization of Karate (A.O.K.) qualifying event for the 2019 Texas Champions.

Self Defense America had two students go and compete in several events: Open Form, Traditional Hard Style Forms, Weapons and Point Sparring. There were a total of six events in this tournament.

Logan Galindo won 1st place in Open Forms, 2nd place in Weapons and 3rd place in Tradition Hard Form. Jahaziel Figueroa won 1st place in Weapons, 1st place in Point Sparring and 2nd place in Open Forms. These boys did a fantastic job!

The Weapons event was done to music. Forms is a set pattern of offensive and defensive moves in all directions. To see the tournament results, click here.

October 2, 2019 - On September 21, 2019 Students ages 4-8 who have earnd their stripes for their next belt rank attended the testing at Self Defense America located on the Center TX square. They had to demonstrate blocks, strikes, kicks, self defense and finished up with board breaking. All the students did a good job.

October 2, 2019 - Each student must show the knowledge of tecquiques learned for their current level and improvement on recent levels. They earn stripes for kicks, strikes, blocks, terminology, stances, and self defense. Once they receive all stripes they are given a letter inviting them to test. At the test all techniques from White belt up to their current rank are shown. Then they have a physcial portion followed by showing their self defense. To finish the testing off they have desinated breaks on boards that have to be completed. Once they pass the test then they have a belt tying and receive their page for their notebook with new techniques to learn and a Certificate proving they have earned that rank.

Three of Shelby County’s five varsity football teams have games this week. Two local teams will be taking a week off with a bye week.

The Center Roughriders won at home last Friday with a 63-42 win over Grace Community of Tyler. This week they head to Brownsboro for their last non-district matchup with the Bears. Center is now 2-3, The Bears are 1-4. Kickoff is on Friday, October 4, 2019 at 7:30 p.m.

The Joaquin Rams shocked the Garrison Bulldogs by taking a 45-23 district win at home. The Rams are 4-1 and will head into a bye-week for the second week of District 11 2A play. On October 11 they will play Linden -Kildare for their second conference game. The L-KHS Tigers are 2-2. They won at Harleton High School last week 29-21.

The Shelbyville Dragons will also be off this Friday and they will travel to Deweyville (3-1) on October 11, 2019. The Dragons are 4-1 this year and they defeated Shepard last Friday 14-7 at Dragons Stadium.

The Tenaha Tigers and Timpson Bears started District 11 2A play with Tenaha hosting the Bears. Tenaha took a 39-6 conference win in the matchup and they will host Beckville on Saturday, October 5, 2019 at 6 p.m.  The Tigers are 4-1, The Beckville Bearcats are 1-3 and last lost to Hemphill 70-28.

The Timpson Bears are now 2-3 and They will travel to Harleton on Friday. Kickoff is at 7:30 p.m. at Wildcats Stadium. Harleton is 2-2. They lost 29-21 at Linden-Kildare last week.

October 1, 2019 - Shelbyville Jr High and JV Football games will be at Elysian Fields, October 1st. Jr High game starts at 5pm and JV game will follow.

Shelbyville Dragons Stadium, Thursday, September 26, 2019 –

The Shelbyville Dragons varsity offense started slow in Thursday’s non-district game with Shepherd High School. The Dragon’s first two drives only netted them a total of five yards.

The Shepherd Pirates gained the first lead of the game when they capped a 9-play scoring drive, which covered 35 yards, with a 2-yard touchdown drive by Dezmon Yates with 9:09 minutes left in the second quarter. This score held up for the remainder of the first half of play.

The Dragons held the Pirates to just one first down in the opening drive of the third stanza. Shepherd punted the ball to Shelbyville where they took over with under 8 minutes left. 

AJ Cartwright got the Shelbyville crowd on their feet with an electrifying touchdown run which covered the 96 yards needed for the Dragons first score of the game. The extra point kick failed and Shelbyville trailed only 6-7.

The final score of the contest came on another Cartwright scoring run with 10:04 minutes left in the contest. This time he went in from 4 yards out. Jaylon Brinson added a 2-point conversion which gave the Dragons a 14-7 margin in the winning effort.

Shelbyville carried the football 40 times for 206 yards. They completed four passes on five attempts for 44 yards. They gained seven first downs and lost one fumble and gave up an interception.

The Pirates carried 25 times for 121 yards. They went 3/15 passing for 55 yards and gained seven first downs. They were intercepted once.

The Dragons will enjoy a Bye week and then they will face the Deweyville Pirates, at Deweyville Pirates Stadium on Friday, October 11, 2019 at 7 p.m.
