Scott Owens, 48, of Joaquin, passed away Thursday, February 25, 2010. He was born December 19, 1961 in Shreveport, Louisiana to Richard Owens and Lucille Lawson Owens. Scott had been a coach and teacher at Joaquin ISD since 2003. He had also previously coached and taught at Rockdale, Garrison and Grapeland. Scott was a member of Fellowship Missionary Baptist Church.

Visitation will be from 3:00 pm to 8:00 pm, Saturday, February 27, 2010 at Watson & Sons Funeral Home. Funeral services will be held at 2:00 pm, Sunday, February 28, 2010 at the Joaquin ISD Gymnasium with Bro. Charles Williams officiating. Interment will follow at Price Cemetery in Joaquin.

Pallbearers will be Charlie Baker, Stevie Smith, Mark Lawrence, Ryan Harper, James “Bump” Phelps, Jason Gray. Jay Bennett and Jimmy Hamilton. Honorary pallbearers will be Bill Baker, Trevor Baker, Kolt Adkison and Klay Adkison.

Laura Burton, 84, of Center formerly of Clinton, IL passed away Thursday February 25, 2010 at Memorial Health Systems of East Texas in San Augustine.

She was born July 24, 1925 in Clinton, IL to Clyde Walter and Ura Eva (Duff) Leevey. She was a member of the First Christian Church in Clinton, IL.

Ola Faye Lynch Daw , 83, passed away on February 24, 2010. She was born on September 14, 1926 in Shelby County, Texas. She was a devoted volunteer at the Pine Grove Nursing Home in her home town for many years and a member of Smyrna Baptist Church. Ms. Daw worked for Russell Stover Candies and Gordon Jewelers in Houston.

She is preceded in death by her parents Elmus and Stella Lynch; her husband Chester Ray Daw, sister Laura, and brothers Rufus, S.J., Robert, and George.

She is survived by son Bobby Daw and wife Debbie of Tenaha, daughter Donna Morris and husband Henry of Houston, grandchildren Jordan, Kirsten, Marla, Angie, and Devin, great grandchildren Madison, James, Cheyenne, Channa, Chalee, Chelsey, Pablo, Kirkland, Madison, Reagan, and Olivia, step-grandchildren Darlene Clark and husband Todd, step-great grandchildren Taylor, Trace and Tucker along with many other nieces and nephews.

Faye will always be remembered as a loving wife, mother, grandmother and friend. Visitation will be held from 5:00 pm to 8:00 pm, Friday, February 26 at Watson and Sons Funeral Home. A funeral service will be held on Saturday, February 27 at 11:00 AM at Watson & Sons Chapel, 1554 State Hwy 7 East, Center.

Thelma Matthews, 99, of Shelbyville, passed away Wednesday, February 24, 2010 at a Center nursing home. She was born February 15, 1911 to Floyd P. Swanzy and Willie Alford Swanzy. Ms. Matthews taught school in Shelbyville for many many years, and started the first band at Shelbyville ISD. She was a member of the First United Methodist Church, where she played piano and organ at for over 70 years.

Visitation will be held from 5:00 pm to 7:00 pm, Thursday, February 25, 2010 at Watson & Sons Funeral Home in Center. Graveside services will be held at 2:00 pm, Friday, February 26, 2010 at Oaklawn Memorial Park in Center with Rev. Carla Reed officiating.

Mary Louise McCollum, 85, of Center, passed away Tuesday, February 23, 2010 at Pine Grove Nursing Home.

Rosary & Funeral Mass will be 10:00 a.m. Thursday, February 25, 2010 at St. Therese Catholic Church with Father Jose Luis Vidante officiating. Graveside Service & Burial will be 11:00 a.m. Saturday, February 27, 2010 at Gate of Heaven Cemetery in Albuquerque, New Mexico. Visitation will be Wednesday, February 24, 2010 from 7:00 p.m. until 9:00 p.m. at Mangum Funeral Home.

She was born December 13, 1924 to Sterling and Mary (Ryan) McCollum in Kansas City, Kansas. She dedicated her life to teaching, traveling, taking care of her sister Lois McCollum and numerous nieces and nephews. She was a dedicated teacher for many years in the states as well as Holland. While living in Holland she acquired many dear friendships and enjoyed traveling Europe with Lois. She also taught in Henderson, TX for several years where her science programs excelled. She was successful in creating a science kit that replicates a model of an atom and had many accolades. She was a member of St. Therese Catholic Church.

She is preceded in death her Parents, Sterling and Mary (Ryan) McCollum, 2 Brothers, Sterling McCollum, Jr. and Dale McCollum, and 3 Sisters, Shirley Smith, Lois McCollum, and Pat Snider.

Ruth Davis Featherston, 84, went to heaven early Sunday morning, February 21, 2010.

Funeral: Come celebrate her life at 1 p.m. Saturday at Thompson's Harveson and Cole, followed by a graveside service at Laurel Land Cemetery. Visitation and viewing 6 - 8 p.m. Friday at the funeral home.

Ruth Davis Featherston was born June 29, 1925 in Stephenville to Joseph and Verly Davis. She married Aleck Booker Featherston Sr. on April 3, 1947 to whom she was happily married for 51 years.

Ruth worked for many years as a Registered Pediatric Nurse in Fort Worth. She enjoyed gardening, quilting, cross-stitching and watching birds at their farm in Joaquin, Texas. Throughout her life, Ruth filled many roles with joy and compassion as a daughter, sister, friend, caretaker, aunt and wife, but her most important role was that of mother and grandmother.

She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, brother, Bill Davis, and cousin, Bill Featherston.

Survivors: Son, Aleck B. Featherston Jr., grandson, Elijah and wife Sarah Featherston; granddaughter, Alissa and husband Adam Bell; step grandchildren, Atalie and husband Adolfo Rivera, Katy and husband Sean Dyer, Nicole Ramputi, and Taylor Ramputi; great-grandchildren, Lodidyn Featherston, Madyson Rupprecht, Isaiah and Eva Rivera; cousin, Geraldine Cobzy; nieces, Nancy Green and Susan Franklin.

Henry McFadden, 82, of Joaquin, passed away Monday, February 22, 2010 at Nacogdoches Memorial Hospital. He was born August 18, 1927 in Deadwood to Doss McFadden and Maude Rae McFadden. Mr. McFadden served in the Army during the Korean Conflict and was a member of the Joaquin Masonic Lodge #856.

Mr. Jesse Weldon Soape, 81, of Center formerly of Carthage, Texas died February 21, 2010 in Center.

Services will be at 10 a.m. Wednesday, February 24, 2010 at Hawthorn Funeral Home Chapel with Rev. Rick Linebarger and Rev. Dale Reed officiating with interment at Antioch Cemetery.

Mr. Jesse Weldon Soape was born January 16, 1929 in Carthage, Texas. He was the youngest of seven children born to the marriage of Jesse James and Emma Lou Thompson Soape. Weldon was a graduate of Carthage High School with the class of 1946. He was a retired steel worker with Armco Steel. Mr. Soape was active politically with the AFL-CIO as a union organizer, Steelworkers Local as an official, arbitrator and negotiator, Chairman of the East Harris County Democrats for many years and served as Panola County Justice of the Peace, Pct. 4 from 1978 – 1982. Weldon was active in the Panola County Historical Society for many years. Daddy loved all of his family and never met a stranger. Because of the depth of his love for his entire family, there were times he felt he had to put off plans with his children to go to the aide of his siblings, nieces and nephews. Daddy instilled the same love, respect, and integrity for humanity in his girls that he himself possessed. He taught his girls that one was only as good as their name, to say what they mean and do what they say, to stand for what they believed and not to waiver, and that it was ok to agree to disagree. He fought for the good of the common man believing that it would benefit his kids and grandkids in the future. The one for all; all for one philosophy. He is preceded in death by his life-long love and mother of his children; Patsy, beloved daughter; Dawn, brothers; Herman, William “Bill”, Allen Perry “Perk”, Janes Calvin “J.C.”, sisters; Lucille Blair and Ada Jane “Kit” Hicks, twin great granddaughters; Hope and Faith; special nephew; Billy Wayne Blair.

Denny L. Adams passed away peacefully at his home on Saturday, February 20, 2010.

Military Graveside Service will be 10:00 a.m. Wednesday, February 24, 2010 at Fairview Cemetery under the direction of VFW Post #8904 with Bro. Aubie McSwain officiating. Visitation will be Tuesday, February 23, 2010 to 5:00 p.m. until 9:00 p.m. at Mangum Funeral Home.

He was the son of the late Robert Braxton (Bob) and Vannie Mae Samford Adams and brother of the late Oswald Vernon (Bill) Adams. He was born September 24, 1922, in Center, Texas where he lived a full and joyful life.

Denny graduated from Center High School in 1940. Like many brave Americans, he answered his nations call, enlisting and serving in the U.S. Navy during World War II from 1942 to 1948 where he was a AD 1st Class. Upon returning from military service, he attended Stephen F. Austin State University, receiving a Bachelor of Business Administration degree in 1953 and a Master of Education degree in 1954. During his 35 years of service as a math teacher and principal in Center ISD, Denny inspired many of his students to pursue careers in math and education. He was an active member of the Center VFW Post 8904, the Center Rotary Club and the Shelby County Democratic Party. Denny was an avid RC model airplane enthusiast, and loved to work on his property and fix just about everything on it. He is known for his tireless generosity and kindness to his many friends and family. He was a member of First Christian Church.

Denny is survived by his loving wife of 60 years, Mary Lou Watlington Adams, his daughter, Lisa and her husband, Larry Myers, and his son Randall Adams and his wife, Arcie. 
Denny is adored by his grandchildren, Wesley and his wife, Kathy Myers, Matt and his wife, Kristina Myers, Kathryn Adams and Josh Adams; and his great grandchildren, Madeline, Tanner, Taylor, Skyler, Aiden, and Dylan Myers.

Pallbearers will be Kathryn Adams, Matt Myers, Wesley Myers, Joshua Adams, Blake Adams, Jasen Watlington and Chris Watlington.

Louise Dalby, 88, of Center, passed away Saturday, February 20, 2010 at her residence. She was born January 30, 1922 in Joaquin to Wesley Bolton and Nancy Jordan Bolton. Mrs. Dalby was a homemaker, mother and grandmother. She was a member of Providence Missionary Baptist Church.

Visitation will be held from 3 p.m. to 5 p.m. Sunday, February 21, 2010 at Watson and Sons Funeral Home in Center. Graveside services will be held at 11 a.m. Monday, February 2010 at Oaklawn Memorial Park in Center with Rev. Rob Merriman officiating.

Kenneth Ray Swint, 77, of Tenaha, passed away Thursday, February 19, 2010 at his home. He was born February 11, 1933 in Texarkana, Arkansas to Llewlyn Swint and Zella Lee Hutchison Swint. Mr. Swint was a member of the First Baptist Church in Tenaha. He served in the Army and was a member of the VFW.

Visitation will be held from 6:00 pm to 8:00 pm, Saturday, February 20, 2010 at Watson & Sons Funeral Home in Center. Funeral services will be held at 2:00 pm, Sunday, February 21, 2010 at the First Baptist Church in Tenaha with Bro. Russ Atwood and Bro. Raymond Guthrie officiating. Born April 24, 1916, in Tenaha, TX, Freda M. Bowlin was the daughter of the late Jim and Myrtle (Bowlin) Roberts. She was a loving homemaker who was also employed at various other jobs. She was married to Ben “Jodie” Bowlin who preceded her in death on March 08, 1989.

Funeral services for Osborn "O.J." Watson, 91, of Huntington will be held Friday, February 19, 2010 at 10:00 a.m. in the Carroway funeral Home Chapel in Huntington with Reverend Kevin Otto and Reverend Martin Doran officiating. Graveside services will be held at 2:00 p.m. in the Restland Cemetery in Tenaha.

Mr. Watson was born September 26, 1918 in Tenaha, Texas to the late Lizzie Mae (Patterson) and Jasper Ward Watson, and died Monday, February 15, 2010 in a local nursing home.

A former resident of Pasadena, Mr. Watson had resided in Huntington for 25 years. He attended Texas A&M University for two years, and then enlisted in the U.S. Army Air Corps. Mr. Watson served during the World War II and was stationed in Archer Field, Brisbane, Australia, where he met his wife of 67 years, then in Lae, New Guinea. He worked as an aircraft mechanic for Braniff Airlines at Love Field in Dallas and Bayport Aviation in La Porte, which he eventually became the owner of. Mr. Watson retired to Huntington to be near Lake Sam Rayburn. He was a member of the Huntington United Methodist Church.

Survivors include his wife, Betty Watson of Huntington; sons and daughters-in-law, Jeff and Janie Watson of Fort Worth and Doyle and Rhonda Watson of Kingwood; daughters and sons-in-law, Sandra Otto of Manvel, Ruth Anne and Walter Shugart of Waxahachie and Tracey and Ronnie Martens of Deer Park; 16 grandchildren; 20 great-grandchildren;brother, Clifton Wayne "Jake" Watson of Tenaha; sisters and brothers-in-law Claudie Rae and Billy Wayne Hairgrove of Tyler and Bobbie Ruth and Dean Veatch of Shreveport, Louisiana; and a number of nieces, nephews and other relatives.

In addition to his parents, Mr. Watson was preceded in death by his infant son, David Osburn Watson; son-in-law, Gary Todd Otto; daughter-in-law, Jeri Watson; great-grandaughter, Kelsey Emblem; brothers, Dewey Watson, Winton Watson, and Billy Joe Watson; sister, Burnett Boyer.

He and Margaret Witherspoon were married on June 26, 1966, and she survives him.

Fred McLeod, 78, of Center, passed away Monday, February 8, 2010 at Mother Frances Hospital, Tyler, Texas.

Services will 4:00 p.m. Thursday, February 11, 2010 at Mangum Funeral Home Chapel with Bro. Pat Windham officiating. Burial will follow at Sardis Cemetery with full military honors under the direction of Barksdale Air force Honor Guard Team. Visitation will be Wednesday, February 10, 2010 from 5:00 p.m. until 7:00 p.m. at Mangum Funeral Home.

He was born July 2, 1931 to Lindsey and Verna (Baldree) McLeod. He graduated from Shelbyville High School in 1950. He is retired from the US Air force as a Senior Master Sgt. He owned and operated Big M Trading Post and he served on the Shelbyville School Board for many years and he loved to Bird Hunt.

He is preceded in death by his Parents, Lindsey and Verna McLeod and Wife, Reba McLeod.

Perry Allen “Papa” Cassell, 59, of Keithville, Louisiana, passed away Sunday, February 7, 2010 at a Shreveport hospital. He was born August 20, 1950 in Center to Leon Cassell and Bernice Hitt Cassell. Mr. Cassell was a member of the King's Temple United Pentecostal Church in Shreveport.

Visitation will be held from 5:00 pm to 8:00 pm, Wednesday, February 10, 2010 at Watson & Sons Funeral Home in Center. Archie Fedrick Spurlock, 83, of Westminster, CA, passed away Wednesday, January 6, 2010, at Orange Coast Memorial Hospital. He was born October 20, 1926 at home near Paxton, Texas to John Thomas Spurlock and Myrtle Robertson Spurlock. He was raised in Shelby County, TX. He served in the US Navy February, 1945 to July, 1969) for 24 years and was on active duty during WWII, Korea, and the Viet Nam conflicts.

A memorial service will be held at 2:00 p.m., Saturday, February 13, 2010 at Advantage Memorial Home at 627 Main St., Huntington Beach, CA 92648 for his family and friends in California. Final interment and a graveside service will be held at Ramah Cemetery in Shelby County, TX on Saturday, February 13, 2010 at 2:00 pm.

Lla Faye Hawks, 90, of Orange, Texas, passed away on February 5, 2010 in Spring, Texas.
Her family was by her side as she made her peaceful entry into Heaven.

Funeral services were held at 2:00 PM, Monday, February 8, 2010, at Mt. Olive Baptist Church, Timpson, with Rev. Scott Jones and Rev. Cliff Hughes officiating. Interment followed in Mt. Olive Cemetery.

She is survived by her son Michael Allen McDonald and wife of Patsy of Spring, Texas; four step-daughters, Amy Burgess and Haskell of Shreveport,LA; Sharon Engelhard and husband Earl of Davidsonville, MD; Charlene Laxton and husband Jim of Lake Jackson, Texas; Susan Lindaood and husband Steve of Clear Lake, Texas; grandchildren, Brent McDonald and wife Paige, Misti Jones, Cheryl Laxton, Lauren Laxton, Darren Lindamood, Shannon Lindamood, Amy Ann Brassieur and husband Ray, Alison Burgess, John Burgess and wife Barbara; great grandchildren, Larndon McDonald, Lane McDonald, Madison Jones, Stephanie Brassieur, and CeCe Burgess; sister, Jennie Sarver of Orange, Texas; brothers, Bob Crump of Timpson, Texas and Bill Crump of Hallsville, Texas.

Faye is preceded in death by her parents, Joseph and Minnie Crump; husband, Allen Burton McDonald and CharleHawk; son, Patrick McDonald; brother, Bud Crump; sisters, Winnie Mae Perkins, Maudell Brittain and Tenney Green; grandson, Justin Jones.

Faye was born on July 8, 1919 to Joseph and Minnie Crump. She was born at home on the family farm in the small Silas community. Faye worked in the shipyards during WWII and learned to become a welder to earn an income. She married a fellow welder, Allen Burton McDonald, and they had two sons together. There was no better example of a wife and mother Faye. Later in life, she married Charles Hawks. She embraced his children as if they were hers and loved them with a mother's love.

Cooking and sewing were two of her favorite hobbies, and she did them both exceptionally well, and she loved to do them for family and friends alike. Faye was also a faithful member of Grace Lutheran Church in Orange, Texas. The Braille ministry was one of the ministries that she was involved in for many years.

Lla Faye Hawks was a compassionate woman who had a gentle and graceful spirit about her. She leaves a wonderful legacy of family behind her. She will be greatly missed by all who knew her, but Heaven has just received a wonderful new addition.

Funeral services for Mr. Taylor Ross, age 68, of Carthage, TX, will be held at 1:00 p.m. on Monday, Feb. 8, 2010, at Central Baptist Church in Carthage with Dr. William Everett and Rev. Stephen Jackson officiating. Interment will follow in Fenton Cemetery in Nacogdoches County, TX. The family will receive friends from 2-5 p.m. on Sunday at the funeral home. After a courageous battle with leukemia, Taylor passed away on Friday night, Feb. 5, 2010, at the University of Texas/M.D. Anderson Cancer Center in Houston. He was surrounded by his family and friends.

Taylor Ross was born on Oct. 20, 1941, in Center, TX to Fisher O’Brien and Clyda Mae Taylor Ross. He graduated from Center High School with the class of 1960, and attended Panola College. Taylor served his country in the U.S. Army during the Vietnam War and was honorably discharged. He married Janette Twink Sitton on Nov. 28, 1974, in Center. Taylor worked for AT&T as a systems technician for over 40 years, retiring in 2009. He loved music, travel, photography, his church, and his family, especially his grandchildren. In 1984, he moved to Carthage from Longview and was an active and faithful member of Central Baptist Church in Carthage where he served as a deacon and was a member of the Co-Ed Sunday School Class. Taylor was a loving and caring son, brother, husband, father, grandfather, and friend. He was preceded in death by his father and one brother, Fisher Ross.

Taylor is survived by his wife, Twink Sitton Ross of Carthage; his mother, Ned Ross of Jacksonville; one daughter, Susannah Caroline Ross Romero and husband Joseph Waymon of Carthage; two grandchildren, Joseph Taylor Romero and Madison Caroline Romero both of Carthage; one brother, James Thomas Ross of Dallas; one sister, Cynthia Ross Vermie and husband John of Dallas; four nieces; and one great-niece. Numerous other relatives and many friends also survive Taylor.

Serving as pallbearers are Wade Arnold Fox, Vance E. Hancock, Jerry Tilton Hanszen, Dr. J. David Holcomb, C.G. Javellana, Robert Dawson Sitton, and John Randall Taylor.

Patricia Cantrell, 67, of Nacogdoches, passed away Friday, February 05, 2010 at Nacogdoches Memorial Hospital.

No services are planned at this time. Her wishes were to be cremated.

She was born March 7, 1942 to Charles Leonard and Wanda Louise (Walker) Hackler. She was a Prison Guard for many years.

Miss Boyd died Wednesday, Feb. 3, 2010, at ETMC Henderson. She was born Dec. 15, 1964, in Pasadena, Texas and was a member of Landmark Missionary Baptist Church. She worked as a sheriff's assistant secretary with the Nacogdoches Sheriff's Department. She was a Sunday School teacher.

Family will receive friends from 6-8 p.m. Friday, Feb. 5, 2010, at Landmark Missionary Baptist Church in Mount Enterprise.

She was preceded in death by: her grandparents, Clayton and Dora Baker and Alvin and Julia Boyd; uncles, Lynn Baker and Charlie Baker.

February 06, 2010, at Pleasant Hill Cemetery, Nacogdoches, TX. Mr. Clark passed away 
February 02, 2010, in Nacogdoches, TX.

Born June 30, 1946, in Shreveport, LA, Jack A. Clark was the son of the late Oris and Lois 
(Agnew) Clark. He graduated from Timpson High School in 1964 and attended Panola College
and Stephen F. Austin State University. While attending SFASU, he met and married Betty Clifton
on June 6, 1968. He was a truck driver and a member of the Teamsters’ Union.

Survivors include his daughter Wendy Cook and husband Neil of Austin, TX; grandson Collin Cook
of Austin; sister Patsy Ruth Clark of Center, TX; aunt Lois Ross of Timpson; and numerous other relatives and friends. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife Betty Clifton Clark, brother Jerry Clark, and sister Gwyneth Clark.

Noon on Friday, January 30, 2010, James Henry Taylor, passed away from life on Earth at age 102. James Henry Taylor was born September 12, 1907, in Pelican, Louisiana to John Henry and Amanda Martin Taylor. He attended school in Oak Grove, Louisiana and after graduation was an instructor in the Air Force. He was a barber for over 30 years and was interested in all sports. He was an avid fisherman of fish as well as men as a Christian witness serving as a Gideon in jail ministry, church deacon, and men’s Sunday School class teacher for many years. 

He was preceded in death by his wife of 59 years, Clarice Helen Bowden Taylor, in May of 1998, an infant daughter Wanda Faye, and a son Jimmy Demar Taylor.

He is survived by son and wife Calvin and Barbara Taylor of Shelbyville, Texas, granddaughter Carrie Amanda Taylor of Milo, Iowa, and grandson and wife Brian and Angel Taylor and great-granddaughter Avery Grace Taylor of Winston-Salem, North Carolina.

For the past three years, James was a resident of Pine Grove Nursing Home in Center, Texas where he has been known by many as he rode around in a red wheel chair. Even before he was a resident; he visited frequently because he said “those old people needed someone to talk to.” He had a great sense of humor and a vitality for life. As a friend at Pine Grove expressed “he will not soon be forgotten.” 

Visitation will be Tuesday, February 2, 2010, from 4 to 8pm at Rose-Neath Funeral Home in Logansport, Louisiana. Funeral Services for James Henry Taylor will be held Wednesday, February 3, 2010 at 10:00am at the Mt.Olivet Baptist Church in Stanley, Louisiana with Rev. Dennis LaFleur and Rev.
