Funeral services for Jerry D. Pinner, 74, of Allentown will be held Saturday, February 1, 2014 at 10:00 a.m. in the Carroway Funeral Home Chapel with Reverend Clayton McClendon, Reverend Mark Green and Reverend Kevin Prince officiating. Interment will follow in the Antioch Cemetery in Ratcliff, Houston County, with Reverend Bailey Alders officiating.

Mr. Pinner was born January 15, 1940 in the Allentown Community of Angelina County, Texas to Sam and Mary Elva (Allen) Pinner, and died Thursday, January 30, 2014 at his residence. He was a lifetime resident of Angelina County. Mr. Pinner was ordained in the UPCI and worked as a Dental Tech for 52 years. He was a member of the Christian Life Center.

Survivors include his wife, Joy Pinner of Allentown; son, Ray Lynn Pinner of Lufkin; daughter, Jerry Gail Pinner of Lufkin; grandchildren and their spouses, Mitzi and Michael Norton of Nacogdoches, Evan D. Cain of Joplin, Missouri, Ashley Faye Case of Lufkin, Dylan Pinner of Huntington, Colyn and Tabatha Pinner of Pollok, Logan Pinner, Landon Pinner, both of Huntington, Joey Landers of Pollok and Jessica Landers of Seattle, Washington; great-grandchildren, Hailey, Hayden, Hagan, River, Kaylynn and Xavier; brother and sister-in-law, Reverend Ray and Portia Pinner of Lufkin; sister and brother-in-law, Sue and Phillip Landers of Pollok; and numerous nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.

He was preceded in death by his parents; daughter, D. Ann Cain; and parents-in-law, A.J. and Louise Kelsey.

Pallbearers will be Dylan Pinner, Colyn Pinner, Logan Pinner, Landon Pinner, Joey Landers and Michael Norton.

Honorary pallbearers will be Ray Golden, Ray Saxton, Steve Edwards and Willie Wade.

The family will welcome friends and loved ones from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. Friday evening at the funeral home.

Kynleigh Michelle Fontenot, infant daughter of Ray Fontenot and Kara Chambliss Fontenot, of Huxley, passed away Tuesday, January 28, 2014 in Ft. Worth. She was born Tuesday, January 21, 2014 in Nacogdoches.

Visitation will be held from 10:00 a.m. to 12:00 noon, Saturday, February 1, 2014 at Watson & Sons Funeral Home in Center. Graveside service will follow at 12:30 p.m. at Strong Cemetery in Huxley with Bro. B.J. Windham officiating.

Sherri Diane Hitt Stamper, 60, of Houston, passed away Sunday, January 26, 2014 at her residence. She was born May 6, 1953 in Houston to Walter James Hitt and Lorene Spencer Hitt. Sherri loved the Lord and was particularly interested in the prophecies of the Old Testament. She traveled to the Holy Land, where she felt blessed to walk where Jesus walked. She was a member of Bibles for China and supported several other missions. Sherri loved to cook and feed all of her family and friends. Everyone especially loved her homemade chocolate Wesson Oil Cake. Sherri loved people and was always helping someone in need. This past Thanksgiving and Christmas, she cooked for neighbors who did not have any family with whom to celebrate. Sherri was a 911 operator for the city of Houston and was dearly loved by all of her co-workers. She was one of the sweetest ladies and will be missed dearly by her family and friends.

Funeral service will be held at 1:00 p.m., Friday, January 31, 2014 at Watson & Sons Funeral Home in Center. Interment will follow at Oaklawn Memorial Park in Center. Visitation will be held two hours prior to the service.

Mary Frances Snow (Nana), age 75, of Chandler passed away at midnight on Jan. 27, 2014 at UTHSC with her loving family at her side. Frances was born Sept 19, 1938 to Perry and Grace Smith of Center Texas. She married Charles Holcomb in 1958 and found her lifelong passion – her family.

In 1972 Frances married Robert W. Snow and moved to Tyler where she continued her career in the banking industry while caring for and raising a family. A highlight of her career was serving as Vice President of Peoples National Bank. She later joined Superior Auctioneers of San Antonio and worked there until she retired in 1992 returning to East Texas. Frances was a long time active member of West Lake Baptist Church where she was loved by many. Frances enjoyed being outdoors, cooking and spending time with her family. She was a blessed recipient of a kidney transplant 16 years ago. She was known as a spiritual giant by those who knew and loved her, she laughed every day, (even when she did not feel like it) and took full advantage of a life made possible by a generous organ donor.

Frances is survived by her husband, Bob, of Tyler; son, Mike Holcomb and wife Norma, of Houston, daughter in law, Regina Holcomb Stephenson of Brownsboro, step daughter, Nikki Heitzeberg of Katy; sisters, Virginia Lemoine or Center, TX, Odessa Weaver of Mt. Enterprise, TX; brother, Ray Smith of Center, TX; grandchildren Justin Lawson, Christen Haldeman, Ashton Trammel, Chad Holcomb, Cole Holcomb, Whitney Bauman and Daniel Heitzeberg; 11 great grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her son, Randy Holcomb and brothers, Wayne Smith and Jerry Smith.

Visitation will be held from 6:00 – 8:00 PM, Thursday, January 30, 2014 at Tyler Memorial Funeral Home, 12053 State Highway 64 West, Tyler. Funeral Services will be held at 2:00 PM, Friday January 31, 2014 at Westlake Baptist Church, 1439 Highway 315 South, Chandler, TX. Interment will follow at Tyler Memorial Cemetery.

Leouis "Lil Momma" Byrd was born in Ashville, North Carolina on April 20, 1924 to Will and Dora Gentry and went to be with the Lord on January 29, 2014. She was raised in Bodcaw Louisiana where she lived until she married Ernest Jessie Byrd on October 31, 1943. Together they had 10 children. In 1962 the family moved to Carrollton where they became members of the Chapel Hill Baptist Church. This would be where she spent the next 30+ years as the head of the nursery school.

She retired at the age of 74.

She is survived by her four children, Elaine Wilson and husband Kenneth of Dallas, Cynthia Favors and husband K.E. of Winnsboro, Donald Byrd and wife Karen of Corsicana, Tommy Bryd and wife Janet of Dallas; three sisters, Judy Taylor, Susie Feazel and Dodie Gentry; two brothers, James Gentry and Everett Gentry; thirty-nine grandchildren and great grandchildren, numerous nieces, nephews, cousins and dear friend Miss Wright.

She is preceded in death by her husband Ernest Jessie Byrd in 1993; six children, Jack Byrd, Guy Byrd, Jerry Byrd, Lola Byrd, Patsy Byrd and Tina Byrd.

Visitation will be Thursday, January 30, 2014 from 3:00 pm - 5:00 pm at Griffin-Roughton Funeral Home. Service will be 8:00 am Friday, January 31, 2014 at Griffin-Roughton Funeral Home with Dennis Webster officiating. Burial will be 3:00 pm at Sardis Cemetery, Center, Texas.

Preston Hickman, 85, of the Galloway Community of Panola County, passed away Tuesday, January 28, 2014 in Azle. He was born August 30, 1928 in Shelby County to John Terry Hickman and Dena Mae Ramsey Hickman. Mr. Hickman served in the United States Army. He was a member of Galloway Methodist Church.

Billie Jo Wallace, 86, of Center, passed away Sunday, January 25, 2014 at Nacogdoches Medical Center in Nacogdoches. She was born January 6, 1928 in Haslam, Texas to Jewell Wicker and Beedie Lura Covington Wicker. Ms. Wallace was a member of the Timpson Missionary Baptist Church in Timpson. She was a caring grandmother, loving mother, the best wife and woman of God that family and friends had ever known.

Joe Davis Foster, 81, of Ft Worth, passed away Sunday, January 26, 2014 in Van, Texas. He was born March 24, 1932 in Center to Joe Foster and Catherine Davis Pinkston. Mr. Foster served in the United States Air Force from 1957 through 1960. He was a member of First United Methodist Church in Center and served Shelby County as an attorney for many years.

Ray Mills, 82, of Wichita Falls, passed away on Thursday, January 23, 2014 in Wichita Falls. He was born on May 6, 1931 in Center, TX to the late Lennox Ray Mills and Verna Wilson Mills. Ray was married for 59 years to Ann Whitt Mills. He was a Building Maintenance Engineer at the Atrium Building in Wichita Falls for 32 years and was a member of the Field and Stream Association.

He is survived by his wife, Ann Mills of Wichita Falls; three children, Vernon Mills and wife Janice of Wichita Falls, Alice Combs and husband Garry of Wichita Falls and Rocky Washburn and wife Kay of Aurora, CO; two grandchildren, Allison Dickerson and Angie Valdez; two great grandchildren; one sister, Geneva Graves of Center, TX.

He was preceded in death by one brother and one sister.

Graveside services will be 1:00 P.M. Tuesday, January 28, 2014 at Crestview Memorial Park with Rev. Harvey McMurry officiating. Hampton Vaughan Funeral Home is in charge of the arrangements.

A memorial service for Eva Lucille Bryant will be held in Angleton Texas on Saturday, January 25, 2014 at 11:00 AM. Mrs. Bryant passed away on December 10, 2013 at her residence in Rusk, Texas. Alfred “A.J.” Sorsby, 84, of Huxley, passed away Thursday, January 23, 2014 in Shreveport, Louisiana. He was born December 21, 1929 in Houston to Jack Blount Sorsby and Thelma Collier Sorsby. Mr. Sorsby served in the United States Air Force. He loved the outdoors and was an avid fisherman. He was a member of Smyrna Baptist Church in Shelbyville. Mr. Sorsby was an electrician by trade and served on the Houston Fire Department.

Visitation will be held from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m., Monday, January 27, 2014 at Watson & Sons Funeral Home in Center. Funeral service will be held at 11:00 a.m., Tuesday, January 28, 2014 at Watson & Sons Chapel. A Military Honors graveside service will follow at Strong Cemetery in Huxley.

Brandon Bernard Buffington, infant son of Whitley Griffin and Waddell Bernard Buffington, Jr., of Timpson, TX, was born and passed into the arms of Jesus on Tuesday, January 21, 2014, at Nacogdoches Medical Center.

Survivors in addition to his parents are grandmothers, Annette Griffin and Cynthia Buffinton; grandfathers, Benjamin Cary, Waddell Buffington, Sr., and Randy White; aunts, Cierra Buffington and Cheyenne Green; uncles, Charvon Griffin and Javon Griffin; great aunt Ebony Griffin; and cousins, Dale Buffington, Aja Buffington, Dereon Griffin, Kha’tya Harris, and Dae’shaun Robinson, all of Virginia.

Betty J Adams, 82, passed away on Monday, September 9, 2013. She was born April 16, 1931 in Tenaha, Texas, daughter of the late Noble and Clotile (brown) Alford. Betty and her husband, Bob, lived in Center in the Antioch Community for many years before moving to North Carolina and Indiana.

Betty was a member of the Order of the Eastern Star in North Carolina and Cedars of Lebanon church.

She is survived by her 2 sons, Jimmy Adams, Robert (wife Marie) F Adams; daughter, Mary Joy Meadors; brother, William "Dee" (wife Anne) Alford; 2 sisters, Jackie Allen, Tula Browning; 6 grandchildren; and 5 great grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Robert Adams; son, Jay Lynn Adams; and daughter-in-law, Aurelia Ann Adams.

Family and friends were received on Thursday, September 12, 2013 from 1pm to 3pm at Fitch-Denney Funeral Home. Funeral services will be held at Fitch-Denney Funeral Home, Thursday, September 12, 2013 at 3pm, with Pastor Danny May officiating.

Interment followed in the Riverview Cemetery, Aurora, Indiana.

Iris M. Allen, 80, of Center, passed away Monday, January 20, 2014 at Pine Grove Nursing Home in Center. She was born August 8, 1933 in Dewville to Roy Vance McLean and Rachael Lakey McLean. She was a loving mother, grandmother and caregiver to her loved ones.

Visitation will be held from 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m., Wednesday, January 22, 2014 at Watson & Sons Funeral Home in Center. Herbert H. Coleman, of Sinton, Texas, went home to be with The Lord on January 19, 2014 after a three year battle with terminal lung cancer. He was 80.

Herb was born August 30, 1933 and was the oldest of six children born to Henry and Ruth Coleman. He grew up and lived most of his life in East Texas. On June 16, 1979, Herb married Patricia Surginer and moved to Sinton, Texas.

Herbert was a truck driver until 1992. After his first battle with cancer, he retired from truck driving. Soon thereafter, Herb began driving a school bus for Sinton ISD. He drove many years, received many awards, but mostly grew to love his “kids”.

He was a longtime member of the Sinton chapter of the Masonic Lodge A.F. & A.M. #1012 and a prayer leader in his church. Herb loved The Lord with all his mind, with all his soul, and made it his mission to spread the plan of salvation.

Survivors include his wife, Patricia Surginer Coleman; daughter Angelia Coleman Anderson and son-in-law Layne Evan Anderson; three step-sons and daughters-in-law who he loved as his own: Raymond Everette O’Neal, Jr. and Laqueta O’Neal; Kenneth Dean O’Neal and Debbie O’Neal; Billy Bob McAdams and Lisa McAdams; many grandchildren and great-grandchildren; a sister, Maebel Coleman; brothers John D. Coleman and Eugene Coleman; and many nieces and nephews.

Preceding in death are his parents, Henry and Ruth Coleman; sisters Betty Davis and Imogene Coleman; step-sons Jimmy McSwain, Randy McAdams and Kenny McAdams.

Family will receive friends Tuesday, January 21, 2014 from 5PM to 7PM at Resthaven Funeral Home in Sinton, Texas. Funeral service will be held Wednesday, January 22, 2014, 9:00 AM at the funeral home. Burial will follow in Sinton Cemetery.


Tommy Franklin Hughes, 82, passed away peacefully in his home in Arlington on Wednesday, Jan. 15, 2014.

Funeral: 10 a.m. Saturday at Wade Funeral Home, to be followed by a graveside ceremony in Moore Memorial Gardens in Arlington. Visitation: A viewing will be held 6 to 8 p.m. Friday at Wade Funeral Home.

The family would like to thank Heart To Heart Hospice of Fort Worth for the outstanding support and care they provided during this difficult time.

Tommy was born Nov. 18, 1931, in Center to Ira Hughes and Mildred Kimbro Hughes. After retiring from the United States Air Force as a master sergeant, Tommy worked as a construction superintendent, building many of the homes in the Arlington community. Tommy was an avid gardener and took great pride in maintaining his beautiful yard. He also enjoyed fishing, watching westerns, and spending time with his family.

Tommy was preceded in death by his loving wife, Tommie Jane Hughes; sisters, Marie Croft, Dee Lout and Lottie Favale; and son-in-law David Buller.

Survivors: Tommy is survived by his sons, Billy Hughes and wife, Debbie, Randy Hughes and wife, Marzee; daughters, Pam Buller-Buckley and husband, Steve Buckley, and Kim Cramer and husband, Sean; grandchildren, Brad, Stephanie, Whitney and Chloe; great-grandchildren Ryan, Mackenzie, Conner, Ryley and Carter; and his loving nieces and nephews.

Pastor Marlin Freeman, 76, of Center, passed away Friday, January 17, 2014 at his residence. He was born August 15, 1937 in Independence County, Arkansas to Walter Freeman and Bertha Ward Freeman. Pastor Freeman moved to Shelby County in 1975. He pastored Pleasant Grove Missionary Baptist Church in Center for several years. In 1983, he founded Heritage Missionary Baptist Church, where he served as Pastor until his death.

Maxine Edge Sims Miller, 90, of Longview, passed away Saturday, January 11, 2014 in Longview. She was born October 3, 1923 in Huxley to Henry Edge and Mattie Lou Smith Edge. Maxine enjoyed working in her garden and flower beds, and she also enjoyed canning. Maxine loved spending time with her precious grandchildren.

Funeral service will be held at 2:00 p.m., Tuesday, January 14, 2014 at Watson & Sons Funeral Home in Center. Interment will follow at Folsom Chapel Cemetery in Center. Visitation will be held two hours prior to the service.

Edwin Pate Hughes, 84, of Pasadena, Texas, went to be with the Lord on January 9, 2014, in Pasadena, Texas. He was born on April 25, 1929, to Luther Adolphus and Maudie Dee Dillen Hughes, in Timpson, Texas.

He is preceded in death by his parents; his brother and sister-in-law, William Otis and Mary Evelyn Hughes; niece, Lynda Kay Post; and great-nephew, Robert Hughes.

He is survived by:

Pate graduated from Timpson High School in 1947. He served in the Army during the Korean War, and was stationed in both Korea and Japan. He later married Florence Shirley Etheridge on June 13, 1959, and was blessed with 54 years of marriage. He worked for the Southern Pacific Railroad, Shell Oil Refinery Laboratory, Sheffield Steel Company, and the United States Postal Service. He retired after 27 years as a faithful letter carrier. During his earlier years, Pate enjoyed drawing plans for 2 houses, and built most of them himself. He also loved to garden, graft pecan trees, feed the birds and the squirrels, and play 42 dominoes. He was a faithful Deacon and member of South Main Baptist Church, Pasadena, for 55 years. He also served as a Family Life Center volunteer. He was a kind, gentle man with a great love for His Lord, and is now enjoying His eternal presence. Visitation will be held from 5-7 p.m., Sunday, January 12, 2014, at Rosewood Funeral Home, 3939 Pasadena Blvd., Pasadena, Texas.

A celebration of his life will be held at 11 a.m., Monday, January 13, 2014, at South Main Baptist Church, 4300 East Sam Houston Pkwy. S., Pasadena, Texas 77505. A Graveside Service will be held at 2 p.m., Wednesday, January 15, 2014, at Blair Cemetery, in Timpson, Texas with Bro. Ronnie Sowell officiating.

Any donations may go to the Deacon Crisis Fund at South Main Baptist Church, Pasadena, Texas.

Leo Keating, 87, of Burleson, TX, passed away Friday, January 3, 2014. Services were held Wednesday, January 8, at Mountain Valley Funeral Home Chapel, Joshua, TX. Interment was in Laurel Land Memorial Park, Ft. Worth.
Leo Keating was born December 2, 1926, in Panola County, Texas, to Jim Richard and Emma Odessa Burks Keating. He was preceded in death by his wife, Oleta McClure Keating, 2 sisters, Donella Jimmerson, and Marie Simpson; and 3 brothers, Harold Keating, Glen Keating, and Doug Keating.

Leo was a longtime Burleson area resident, having spent time working on the MKT (Katy) Railroad. He was retired from Burleson Independent School District, and a member of Boulevard Baptist Church. Leo was a special Dad and Granddad, whose family time was very important to him. He loved to garden, and excelled in woodworking.

Mrs. Bennie Roberts, age 79, longtime resident of San Augustine, passed from this life early Monday morning, January 6, 2014, in San Augustine.

Bennie was born to Ocie (Simmons) Harvey and Burl Harvey on December 30, 1934, in San Augustine County, Texas. She was a long-time employee of the San Augustine Tribune,the local weekly paper in San Augustine, as a Type Setter. She was a member of the First Baptist Church in Broaddus.

In lieu of memorials, the family has requested donations be made to the First Baptist Church, 207 Buchanan Street, Broaddus, Texas 75972, or Hospice of East Texas.

Funeral Services will be held at 1 p.m. Thursday, January 9, 2014, in the First Baptist Church, Broaddus, Texas with Dr. W. Wayne Barth and Alton Shaw officiating. Interment will be in the Harvey Cemetery in Broaddus.

Mrs. Norma Adle Murray, age 94, was born March 17, 1919, in San Augustine County, Texas to the late Vera Hubbard Holloway and Ada Jewel (Pate) Holloway. She entered into rest in San Augustine on January 1, 2014.

Mrs. Murray was a member of the Attoyac Baptist Church.

She was a loving wife, mother, grandmother and great-grandmother.

Mrs. Martha Ann (Forse) Carson, age 70, of Deer Park, Texas, passed from this life on Sunday, January 5, 2014, in Pasadena, Texas.

Martha was born to Louvenia (Eppes) Forse and Hollis Forse on April 13, 1943, in San Augustine County, Texas. She was a graduate of San Augustine High School in 1961. A Graduate of Stephen F. Austin State College in 1964. (Bachelor of Business Adminstation) and a Graduate of the University of Houston in 1970 (Masters of Education) Thereafter, she was an Educator teaching mainly in the Conroe and Humble Independent School District, teaching Mathematics and Computer Literacy. She was a member of the Church of Christ.

Funeral Services will be held at 1 p.m. Wednesday, January 8, 2014, in the Wyman Roberts Funeral Home in San Augustine. Stephen Wiggins will officiate. Interment will be in the Chinquapin Cemetery in San Augustine County, Texas. Visitation will be from the hours of 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. Tuesday, January 7, 2014, in the Wyman Roberts Funeral Home.

Allen Lane Abbitt, 75, of Pollok, passed away Wednesday, January 8, 2014 at his residence. He was born February 23, 1938 in Minden, Louisiana to Metz Abbitt and Susie Peavey Abbitt. He was of the Baptist faith.

Mr. Abbitt’s wishes were to be cremated and a private memorial service will be held at a later time.

Bruce Riley Samford, Sr. was born August 14, 1937 in Tenaha, Texas, and died January 6, 2014 at his home in Timpson, Texas.  He was a loving husband, father, grandfather and great grandfather.  Bruce graduated in 1956 from Tenaha High School where he played football, basketball and ran track.  He began a long and successful career with Southwestern Bell Telephone Company at a young age, retiring after thirty years of service.  Bruce was a member of Timpson Masonic Lodge #437 for forty-three years and was also a Shriner.  He was elected Justice of the Peace for Precinct Five, serving for thirteen years.  He also was the Municipal Judge for the City of Timpson until he became ill in 2011.

Bruce was very involved in the community where he served on the school board for Timpson ISD for six years.  He was a big Bear Backer, enjoying his children and grandchildren in their endeavors.  Pappa would occasionally cross over to cheer for the Kilgore Bulldogs.  Bruce was always a Texas Longhorn fan and was extremely proud to have grandchildren attending UT.  His Longhorn pride ran so deep that his grandchildren made him an “Honorary Longhorn” with a tile brick in his honor at the UT Alumni Center for all to see.  Texas Fight!

Bruce was preceded in death by his parents, Hoyal Samford and Ella Marie Tidwell, his father and mother-in-law Marcus and Emily Powers, and his loving grandparents Nugent and Cleo Samford by whom he was raised.  Bruce is survived by his loving wife of fifty-five years, Patricia Powers Samford.  He is also survived by his children Sandie Crawford, Terrie Nix and husband Milt, Jerrie Strahan and husband Robbie, and Bruce Riley Samford Jr. and wife Tina, all of Timpson.  He is survived by his dearly-loved grandchildren: Jessica Strahan of Los Angeles, CA, Emily Crawford of Austin, Marcus Nix of Timpson, Mallory Strahan of Nacogdoches, Macy Nix of Austin, and Olivia Stokes and husband Taylor of Timpson; great grandson, Lynk Riley Stokes, of Timpson; sister Carolyn Hairgrove; and nephew Stephen Hairgrove of Grapevine. 

As a beloved husband and family man, he will be sorely missed by friends and family alike.

Maxilene Thorn, 86, of Washington D.C., formerly of Center, Texas, passed away Friday, January 3, 2014, at her residence. She was born January 26, 1927, in Center to John Crocker and Alvie Fults Crocker. Maxilene was the thirteenth child of thirteen children, and she was the last survivor of her generation.

Joe W. Samford, 89, of College Station, passed away January 2, 2014 at St. Joseph’s Hospital in Bryan, Texas. He was born June 3, 1924 in Center, Texas. He was the only son of the late Eli and Velma Samford. He served this great country with honor and bravery in the Second World War as a member of the 10th Mountain Division. He was a man of great kindness and strength, a loyal and loving husband, father, grandfather and great grandfather.

He was preceded in death by his loving wife of 64 years, Mary Quisenberry Samford.

He is survived by his son, Donald; daughter-in-law, Sandra Burleson Samford; his granddaughter, Amanda Samford Holmes, her husband Kevin and their three children, Mary, Gabriel and Anna Marie. He is also survived by a sister-in-law, Glenda Sue Conner and husband, Jerry, as well as a host of devoted nieces and nephews.

Born September 20, 1951, in Timpson, TX, Charles Wayne Bushiey was the son of the late Joseph L. Bushiey and Flozell Powdrill Bushiey. Charlie was a graduate of Timpson High School and worked as a welder. He loved the Stockman Community where he grew up and spent his life enjoying his East Texas home.
