December 23, 2019 - The staff at the Shelby County Children’s Advocacy Center would like to thank those of you who contributed to our annual toy drive.

Your generosity allowed us to provide 88 children in our community with Christmas cheer during a time in their lives when it is most needed. We appreciate each and every individual, organization, and business who gave in support of the children we serve.

Merry Christmas and a blessed New Year to you all!

December 18, 2019 - Ms. Keli’s first grade class at Excelsior School visited Focused Care Nursing Home this week. Each student brought Christmas gifts ensuring that all the residents would have a gift to open this year. The kiddos also sang Christmas carols and read to the residents while they were there. Ms. Keli will also be making a delivery of gifts to Holiday Nursing Home. Excelsior would like to send out an extra thank you to Dana Strain, Anthony Welch, and Kim McClelland for going over and beyond to help make sure each resident has a Merry Christmas!

December 18, 2019 - 2020 Golden Harvest Ministries Club officers were installed by Carl Smith at the December 16 meeting at the First Baptist Church in Center, Texas.

Harold Hanson led members in singing Christmas hymns. Members sang Happy Birthday to Linda Bordelon, and remembered Margaret Robertson on her birthday. Anniversary greetings went to Ellen and Walter Manning and Alive and Tommy West.

Tables were decorated with poinsettias and Christmas cactus plants which were used as door prizes. Harold and Naomi Hanson contributed Popcorn Tins which were also used as door prizes.

December 18, 2019 - Joan Garrett has reached the milestone of 50 years in Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc. It was the first sorority on Prairie View College Campus in 1969 and she was one of 25 being initiated into the new chapter.

She will be meeting several of her 'line' charter sisters on the actual pledge date, December 19th in Houston. Many congratulations are sent your way and may you continue to work actively in the chapter, both national and local.

December 14, 2019 - Meeting in the fellowship hall of Timpson First United Methodist Church last Wednesday, the Timpson Area Genealogical and Heritage Society enjoyed a Christmas luncheon before the society's 2020 officers were installed by Judge Tracy Broadway.

Filling leadership positions next year will be Jan Barrett, President and Librarian; Margaret Bolick, Vice President; Dru Dickey, Treasurer and Archivist; Jim Barrett, Assistant Treasurer, Parliamentarian, and Assistant Tap Root Editor;  B.J. Pitts, Recording and Corresponding Secretary; Tad Bailey, Program Reporter; Kathy Grigsby, Program Coordinator;  Marjorie Holt, Membership Chairman; Brandy Harding, Volunteer Coordinator and Media Technician; and Shannon Ramsey, Tap Root Editor. Also installed were new Board Members Duncan Connell, Jean Wells, and Margaret Oliver, who will serve three year terms. 

The Timpson Area Genealogical and Heritage Society meets on the third Wednesday of each month at 2PM in the Meeting Room of the Timpson Public Library, located on the corner of Austin and Bremond Streets in downtown Timpson. The public is invited.


2018 Firefighter of the Year presents the 2019 award to Firefighter Michael Stephens.

December 12, 2019 - The Joaquin Volunteer Fire Department held their annual Christmas Party and Awards Banquet on Saturday, December 7th at the Joaquin ISD Cafeteria.

The event was well attended by department members and their families, as well as several guests. Those included Joaquin City Councilwoman Cathy Atkinson and her husband Bill, longtime fire department supporter Darrell Alford and his wife Gay, Precinct 3 Constable RoyCheatwood, Deputy Constable Newton Johnson, Jr., and Texas DPS State Troopers Keith Jones and Jesse Fountain.

After a wonderful steak dinner, Fire Chief Perry Pugh welcomed the guests, as well as the members and their families. Chief Pugh talked about what a productive year the department has had, highlighted by the opening of Fire Station #2 on Highway 7. He also spoke of some exciting things to come, such as the addition of a new rescue engine to the department’s fleet of trucks in 2020, made possible by the approval of a USDA grant filed by the city.

He then turned the program over to Training Officer Stephen Ewing, who handed out several service awards. Firefighters Nat Rodgers and Michael Bates were recognized for five years of service, and Chief of EMS Jesse Griffith was recognized for 25 years. Firefighters Brock Pugh and Michael Stephens and Traffic Officer Tommy Boyett, along with Assistant Chiefs Jeremy Boyett and Steve Cockrell and Chief Perry Pugh received recognition for perfect attendance at meetings, and Jeremy Boyett was awarded a certificate for answering the most calls for the year. Firefighter Jesse Parent, who received the honor of Firefighter of the Year in 2018, presented the 2019 award to Firefighter Michael Stephens.

The Joaquin Volunteer Fire Department would like to wish all citizens of our community a safe and happy holiday season.

December 9, 2019 - A Christmas festival and parade were held in the City of Joaquin Saturday, December 7, 2019 with a variety of other activities.

Vendors were offering a variety of goods on the square and the parade took its traditional route down U.S. 84 and onto the square. The Grand Marshal of the parade was Mr. A.J. Procell.

A treasure hunt was a main attraction for many and following several hints, the winner was Jairo Blanco, who located the prize.

December 9, 2019 - The Shelby County Chamber of Commerce Christmas Parade Committee announces the winners of the 20th Annual Santa’s Christmas Parade, sponsored by Shelby Savings Bank, which was held on Saturday, December 7th. The theme for the parade was “Songs of the Season”.

December 7, 2019 - The Fannie Brown Booth Memorial Library was host to Puppet Wise Productions presentation of "Snowbound in East Texas" Saturday, December 7, 2019.

Area children were enthralled by the story and characters as they were entertained at the library.
