April 25, 2015 - (Album) The Joaquin Volunteer Fire Department held their annual fundraiser on Saturday, April 25, 2015 which included barbecue, cakes and a Jaws of Life competition.
At 11am the event began with barbecue plates for sale and several items offered as raffle items for a raffle to be drawn on the week before Father's Day. Some of the items in this raffle include a NAPA battery starter and charger, large propane tank, 58 piece tool set, 2 piece tool chest, and a 4000 watt generator.
When 5:30pm arrived firemen from two teams donned their bunker gear and got to work with Jaws of Life as they began cutting into a car and a SUV to see who would finish first. Usually the firemen are using these tools in the middle of a roadway or just beside it 
as they try to free a trapped driver or passenger following a crash.
Although both teams worked quickly, the team working on the car finished first. The result of the win meant the other team had to wash the fire trucks next time they are due a scrubbing.
Following the demonstration a cake walk was held in the middle of the street in front of the fire department. Participants gathered on the cake walk squares and began walking them. When the music stopped and their number was called, they were presented with a cake in most instances. Local cooks were generous enough to share their cooking skills and present the cakes to the fire department for auction.
The fire department was grateful to Jeff Dean, Cornerstone Construction, for donating the labor for roof repair the fire department needed. They also were very appreciative to the list of other donors for the event which are as follows: Smith Towing & Recovery; Joaquin Quick Stop; Ultrashade; Ellen Cogswell; Neil Golden; Dean's Hardware; Wilson Supply; Haslam Sales; Ace Hardware of Center; Tractor Supply; Wal Mart; Brookshire Brothers; WhatABurger; and Napa Auto Parts.
April 25th, 2015 - A bake sale was hosted by Mandy Tyre at tantalized tanning/city blends on April 25th, 2015 as a fundraiser to support Caleb Norton in his fight against Testicular Cancer. There was a great showing of support from the community. Many goods were baked and dropped off, donations were given and so much love was shown. The family cannot thank you enough for all the care and support shown during this difficult time in their lives.
Caleb was diagnosed with stage 3 Nonseminoma Testicular cancer on March 31, 2015. His treatment consist of chemotherapy at Baylor University Medical Center in Dallas, TX where he will do one week on and two weeks off for a total of 12 weeks which is 4 cycles. He has completed one week and will head back to Baylor for round 2 on May 5th.
Caleb is the 22 year old son of Tammie & Scott Jacobs and Clint & Jennifer Norton.
We are asking everyone to join #TeamCaleb and lift him and his family up in prayer. If you find it in your heart and are able to make a monetary donation in any amount towards #TeamCaleb we would greatly appreciate .

April 24, 2015 - During the Center Garden Club Annual Flower Show held on April 17, 2015 a flower 
urn was given away as a door prize. Toward the end of the event tickets were drawn and the winner was discovered to be Mrs. Eldora Gilchrist of Center.
Gilchrist arrived and was presented with her new urn by Judy Matthews, Center Garden Club members.
April 24, 2015 - The William Carroll Crawford Chapter of the Daughters of the Republic of Texas met in April for the last meeting before the 2015 State Convention in San Antonio.
Officers for the 2015 - 2017 term were installed by Past chapter President and Third Vice-president of the Daughters of the Republic of Texas Billie Dawson and Past chapter President Fay Eddins.

April 24, 2015 - Center Garden Club members Linda Bordelon, (shown with Incoming Texas Garden Clubs State President Carol Moore and Texas State President Sarah McReynolds), Carolyn Bounds, Alison Scull, Robbie Kerr, Judy Matthews, Jackie Hancock, Shirley Owens, and Cherry Jones attended the Youth Awards luncheon on Wednesday, April 22, at the 87th Texas Garden Clubs, Inc. Spring Convention in Tyler, Texas.
Center High School Senior Kelsie Waller, who was sponsored by the Center Garden Club, read her 1st place speech and was awarded $500. Other Center Garden Club state youth winners were as follows:

April 24, 2015 - Center Garden Club members Linda Bordelon and Jackie Hancock (shown with District III Director Nita Beale), who served as delegates to the Texas Garden Clubs, Inc. 87th 
Annual Spring Convention in Tyler, Texas, April 20-23, attended workshops on "Bamboo in the Landscape," "Repurposed Containers," "Floral Designs by Flower Show Judges," and "Keyhole Gardens."
They participated in a special Arbor Day Ceremony and planted a tree at Tyler Jr. College, and toured the gardens and art museum. Entertainment was provided by the Tyler Jr. College "Apache Bells" and Smith 'n Nokes "Uncommon Comedy" with a program "Empower Your Flowers."
183 Texas Garden Club members were hosted by District III Tyler Area council of Garden Clubs and District III Flower Show Judges Council. Decorations were used with the theme "East Texas Blooms."

April 22, 2015 - The Golden Harvest Ministries Club met April 20, 2015 in the Fellowship Hall of the First Baptist Church . Joe Anderson brought the meeting to order by calling on Ron Barbee to give the opening prayer. He then recognized our visitors who were Joe Fiedler, Margaret and Gene Casto and Elizabeth Pate. Harold Hanson led us as we sang “He Keeps Me Singing” and “ America the Beautiful.” Alice West played the piano as we sang.
W. A. Moore celebrates his birthday this month and we sang for him. Those having wedding anniversaries this month were Winnie Preston and Danny and Darlene Brown and Dot Bain. We sang Happy Anniversary for them. David Bain asked the blessing on the food and there were many compliments for the cooks.
Linda Anderson, Program Chair, introduced the members of the William Carol Crawford Chapter of the Daughter’s of the Republic of Texas who gave the program. We sang “Deep in the Heart of Texas” before Maggie Casto gave highlights of the beginnings of Texas that is how we gained our independence. She explained that the San Jacinto18 minute war was a factor in establishing independence and how it helped the United States gain territory beyond Texas . Texas is the 28th State gaining independence in 1845. The Daughter’s of the Republic are proud to be Texans and their purpose is to inspire others to learn about our history. Nori Latimer and Ruby Switzer are also Daughter’s of the Republic.
Minutes of the last meeting were read. Betty Green gave the treasures report. Joe Anderson thanked the volunteers who help in the kitchen. Alice West reported that the trip to Branson was good even though it rained most of the time. Ann Forbes went over the list of Prayer needs. Helen Collard led us in closing prayer remembering those on the prayer list.

April 20, 2015 - CASA of Deep East Texas welcomes three new CASA/GAL's to Nacogdoches County. Honorable Judge Klein swore in Amy Reed, Debra Judge, and Elizabeth 'Sam' Pederson on April 20, 2015. They will soon be the voice for a child in foster care and stand up for them in court. The next tentative training is scheduled for June. Applications are being accepted.
