January 23, 2015 - Beekeepers Mike and Linda Bordelon who own and operate Heavenly Honey Apiary on Toledo Bend Lake and are members of the Pineywoods Beekeepers Association, explained basic equipment for beekeepers, bee facts, and plants, flowers, and trees that bees love to the San Augustine Rotary Club at their Jan. 21 meeting. Honey and Creamed Honey door prizes were won by William Johnson and Dr. Floyd Hennan.
January 23, 2015 - "Keep Calm and Walk On" was the slogan for the Shelby county - Walk Across Texas contestants as the eleven teams and four solo walkers dusted off their walking shoes and joined in to “Walk Across Texas!” These teams and solo walkers competed with each other to see who could walk the most miles over eight weeks from October 27 – December 19, 2014. Their goal was to walk at least 830 miles (the distance from Longview to El Paso) in eight weeks.
At the conclusion of the 8 week program, the teams and individuals walked a total of 12,072 miles with The Country Girls team walking 2,102 miles and placing first in the team category. The County Girls team is comprised of Cynthia Howard, team captain, Latoya Howard, DeShun Gregory, Sheila Reeves, Daphne McCollister, NaKeisha Swindle, Denetra Slaughter, and Tara Bailey. Candace Prater from the Cruse Expedition team walked 711 miles and won the individual award for most miles completed. Other teams competing included: Cruse Expedition, Shelby Savings Bank (5 teams), Huxley Bay Marina, Roadrunners, The Disciples and Agony of De Feet.

January 20, 2015 - The 2015 January Golden Harvest Ministries Club meeting was held Monday the 19th in the Fellowship Hall of the First Baptist Church . Joe Anderson brought the meeting to order and welcomed everyone to the meeting. He called on Johnie Gray to lead the opening prayer. Harold Hanson enthusiastically led the group in singing “Leaning on the Everlasting Arms” and He Lives”. Darlene Brown introduced our visitor, Alison Brown.
The anniversaries this month were Joe and Linda Anderson with 57 years, Alice West married 60 years and Johnie and Terry Gray married 56 years. We sang happy anniversary for these people. Then we sang happy birthday to Joe Anderson, Jim Forbes, Terry Gray, Walter Manning and Ed Miller. After Vance Green blessed the food everyone enjoyed eating the food brought by members. Harold Hanson conducted a drawing for 5 packages of homemade Chocolate Candy.
Jim Forbes, Program Chair, introduced David Chadwick from the Farmer’s State Bank. David Chadwick brought and introduced Scott Stanfield who is working on new marketing features for the Farmer’s State Bank. We learned that Debit Cards and Online Banking are as safe as the user. It is important to reconcile the bank statement monthly to note any unauthorized activity. David Chadwick informed us that the bank ATM area is monitored for safety conditions. The bank web site is being changed to include information on how to bank electronically and they have new possibilities in banking on line.
Minutes of the last meeting were read. Betty Green gave a complete financial report. Members gave various reports on opportunities to minister to home bound and others in need. Ann Forbes went over the prayer list and reported on the condition of several sick members and relatives of members. Ed Miller led the closing prayer.
January 19, 2015 - About a year ago the American Pickers Television Show contacted Dennis Leggett of Joaquin. Several people had suggested they contact him since they are interested in buying antique motorcycles and oddities. About four months ago someone called asking more questions. The production company sent someone out to take pictures of some of his inventory about a month ago. A few days ago they contacted him to say they would be by his shop on Saturday to film. It was an experience that Dennis will not soon forget. To be sure, the town will not forget soon either.
Frank Fritz and Mike Wolfe, the stars of the show, mingled with the town folks when they were not busy filming. They said it is common that they cause a “stir” in small towns. However, larger cities seem to just stay busy on their way wherever that may be. Many Joaquin adults and kids alike were able to take pictures and get signatures from Frank and Mike.
It will be interesting to see how they cut and piece filming from 10AM to 4:30PM (with a break for lunch at the Ram House Café), down to a twenty minute segment. The production company will notify the Leggetts as to when the show will air.
As the sun began to set, and the pickers rode off into the sunset to their next adventure, the citizens of Joaquin and the Leggetts were glad for the town of Joaquin to get back to “normal.”

Having Won the $10,000 First Prize, Local Sisters Vie for the Whole Can of Worms!
Tenaha, Texas - January 18, 2015 - Small town sisters Leisa Black Hergert and Miriam Black have made people all across the nation laugh out loud with a hilarious practical joke caught on video. And after this coming Sunday, the sisters might be the ones laughing... all the way to the bank.
Longtime residents of Marshall, Texas know that the Black sisters are funny girls. Thanks to readily available video recorders on phones these days and a desire to play practical jokes from time to time, the sisters turned their funny side into a money making opportunity.
Leisa and Miriam traveled to Los Angeles, California back in August of 2014 and competed for, and ultimately won, the $10,000 prize that earned them a spot in the finals on ABC's America's Funniest Home Videos. Last month the sisters taped the final episode of AFV and are now one of the few people in America who know who the winner of the $100,000 will be. They're bound to silence by the network and bursting at the seams with the secret.
With a family connection to Tenaha, Texas, the sisters have decided to hold a viewing party at the Tenaha High School (138 College Street, Tenaha, Texas) and watch the episode with good family and friends. Who will win the $100,000 prize? You'll just have to watch along with the rest of America this Sunday, January 18th on ABC at 6pm (Central) to find out!
January 16, 2015 - On Wednesday, January 14th, 2015, the Center High School Health Science Department under the direction of Ms. Kathy Camp and Mrs. Nicole Vaughn, hosted their regular blood drive with the Gulf Coast Regional Blood Center. GCRBC Donor Recruitment Coordinator, Tessa Loveless reported that they collected 59 units of blood which makes the largest amount of blood donations at CHS since 2009. This means the students at CHS save 180 lives on Wednesday. It is amazing to see these students give a piece of themselves in order to save others. Congratulations Center High School and thank you for giving life!
January 15, 2015 - Texas State Historian Dr. Bill O'Neal gave a history of Texas Music to members and guests of the Delta Gamma Chapter of The Delta Kappa Gamma Society International at their January 12 meeting in Timpson, Texas. Members were able to purchase from a variety of his 44 published books. Delta Gamma is made up of women educators from Sabine, Shelby, and San Augustine Counties.

January 15, 2015 - According to an article in the Jasper Newsboy, Jasper County, the annual Martin Luther King Day Rally March and Rally will be held on Monday, January 19th and Ms Lenola Wyatt-Tutt of Shelbyville, Texas will be the guest speaker at the rally in the Jasper High School auditorium following the march.
The annual march will begin at 10am. President of the NAACP Jasper branch, Booker T. Hunter announced those wishing to participate in the march should come to the Greater New Bethel Church on Martin Luther King Drive prior to the 10am start time. The march will take its traditional path west on MLK, south on Main Street across Highway 190 and finally south on Bowie Street to the Jasper High School Auditorium.
Wyatt-Tutt will speak at the rally and it should be an informative and exciting speech celebrating Dr. Martin Luther King. For more information concerning the march or the speaker please contact Booker T. Hunter at 409-382-3434.

Local wildlife expert and Cryptozoologist, Jeff Stewart recently filmed an episode of Survivorman starring Les Stroud here in East Texas. This marks the second television show for the Tenaha resident, who will be filming his third show in the near future for the Discovery channel.
Jeff has been featured on Moore Outdoors and Texas Fish and Game Magazines radio program. Mr Stewart also works very closely with Childrens Kingdom Ministries and Kingdom Zoo along side with Chester Moore.
In March, Jeff will be a key note speaker at the Texas Unity Fest in Dallas speaking on cryptid cats in Texas.
