February 22, 2015 - The Pineywoods Photographic Society (PWPS) held their monthly meeting this past Saturday, with the critique competition being "REDS." There was a great workshop co-hosted by Janet Hughes and Dennis Harris on "Using Flash". This was enjoyed by all in attendance considering the extreme discussions that took place. Thank you Janet and Dennis.
The PWPS would like to welcome new member Sheila Harris, Center, Tx.

Our goal is to help you become a better photographer and give you a place to meet others who share your passion for photography. We try to create programs and activities with information and instruction for all skill levels in an environment of support and cooperation.Visitors are welcome to attend our meetings with or without a member.
February 17, 2015 - The Golden Harvest Ministries Club February meeting was held Monday the 16th in the Fellowship Hall of the First Baptist Church . Joe Anderson brought the meeting to order and noted that we had good attendance in spite of the cold, rainy weather. He called on Danny Brown to lead the opening prayer. Harold Hanson led us as we sang “I Stand Amazed” and “Jesus loves me.” Alice West played the piano as we sang.
Those who had a birthday this month were Odessa Link, Betty Meroney and Harold Warr. Harold and Naomi Hanson reported that they had their 61st wedding anniversary. We sang for these people and had them go first in the lunch line. W. A. Moore asked the blessing on the food. Meal time was relaxed and the food was delightful.
Linda Anderson, Program Chair, announced the program which was what Mr. Hanson called the Burkson Quartet. That is Bill and Joyce Funderburk and Harold and Naomi Hanson. Joyce Funderburk accompanied and sang alto while the others sang the other parts. The audience greatly enjoyed each number and felt praise along with the performers.
Minutes of the last meeting were read. Betty Green gave the financial report of income and expenses. Joe Anderson read a thank-you note from Frances Chance. He assigned one person out of each group of 10 members to call each person in their group and to remind them of the next meeting. There was a report of trips. We passed the dead line to sign up for the next trip and we are beginning to plan another trip for June.
Ann Forbes went over the Prayer List and announced the Women’s Conference. Linda Bordelon conducted a drawing for 4 door prizes. They were won by Mary Ivy, David Bain, Louise Hayden and Bobbie Nutt. David Bain led in closing prayer.

February 20, 2015 - Shelby Savings Bank donated a cooler with fishing gear and SSB caps and coozies to be used as a prize in the 2015 Logansport Sand Bass Tournament.
The tournament hosted by the Logansport Chamber of Commerce will be held on Saturday, March 14th on the Sabine River at the beginning of The Toledo Bend Reservoir.
Sammy Arnold is shown picking up the donation. We would like to wish everyone a fun and safe day of fishing!
February 19, 2015 - VFW Post 8904 & Ladies Auxiliary held a wreath laying ceremony on Tuesday, February 17, 2015 in remembrance of the sinking of the USS Maine and its crew in Havana Harbor 117 years ago.
Following a prayer led by Gene Hutto, VFW Chaplain, Larry Hume, Post Quartermaster spoke about the USS Maine and its crew.
"117 years ago the USS Maine exploded in the harbor of Havana Cuba, killing 266 American crewmen and marines. Spain was blamed for that explosion and the Spanish-American War began as a result. Less than four months later the United States won a decisive victory. It was the first war the United States had fought outside its shores. 3,000 American military were lost, mostly from yellow fever, typhoid and fighting in the jungles."
Hume quoted Teddy Roosevelt who said to his troops as they mustered out, "Enjoy the next 15 days because after that you will be forgotten."
He stated they were forgotten and because of the United States Government's refusal of proper medical the veterans banded together, "These veterans banded together in organizations that would become the Veterans of Foreign Wars of the United States. These are our forefathers of our organization."
Newton Johnson Jr., Sr. Vice Commander, laid the wreath on the veterans memorial and Taps was featured as presented by Mike Langford , Post Commander.
February 19, 2015 - Dr. Jerry Hopkins was the guest speaker at the Shelby County Historical Society meeting held on February 17, 2015.
A Growing Adventure: A History of Clever Creek Baptist Church is a book written by Dr. Hopkins which he presented during the meeting explaining the beginning and continued life and ministry of the church.
Dr. Hopkins is seen at right as he attended the Shelby County Historical Museum.
February 19, 2015 - Woodmen of the World presented a donation for Agriculture Education Day on Tuesday, February 17, 2015.
The event will be held at the Shelby County Sheriff's Posse Rodeo Arena on May 1, 2015 and will have a variety of activities for students to learn from.
Venora McSwain, Woodmen of the World Representative, is pictured at left with Will Lucas, Chair Committee of Agriculture Education Day, as she presented a $500 check on behalf of Woodmen of the World for the event.
February 18, 2015 - Local wildlife expert and Cryptozoologist Jeff Stewart is once again in the center of attention. The Animal Planet's Finding Bigfoot has set it's sights on East Texas and enlisted the expertise and experiences of Mr. Stewart. While Mr. Stewart could not divulge any particulars of the filming schedule or locations he did say he is quickly gaining a huge amount of respect for those in television.
Mr. Stewart has filmed with Destination America, Discovery and Animal Planet so far and will be a key note speaker at the upcoming Phylosophenomina Festival in Glen Rose Tx. On March 22.
February 18, 2015 - Source: The Episcopal Diocese of Texas - Jean Diebolt received the Bishop’s Award for Ministry at the recent Diocesan Council in The Woodlands. Bishop C. Andrew Doyle praised her dedication and continuing efforts to improve access to health care for her East Texas community. “Jean’s ability to bring people together for the benefit of her patients has set an example for all of us,” he said. “She and her team do exemplary ministry and we are grateful for the transformation of lives that all their efforts have brought about.”

February 18, 2015 - Valentines, flower show, and anniversary plans were subjects of conversation at the Center Garden Club meeting held Wednesday, February 11th at the John D. Windham Civic Center.
Garden Club President Colleen Doggett welcomed everyone and introduced the club's newest members who are Cindy Brown and Anna Stuever. Doggett also announced the club moved their 60th anniversary celebration to May which will coincide with announcement of new officers.
The club then discussed upcoming plans for the 2015 Flower Show to be held in April. Carolyn Bounds addressed the club and announced this year's flower show theme to be 'Nature's Gallery.' Bounds expressed excitement about the artistic style theme.
Following the business meeting, members came together and decorated valentine's cards which were later distributed to local area nursing homes. Door prize winners of flower pots with various lilies, dandelions, and irises made by Judy Matthews were Shirley Owens and Linda Bordelon.
February 18, 2015 - Amy Permenter, a senior at Shelbyville High School, was crowned Saturday, February 14th as the new Miss Lufkin. She is the 18-year-old daughter of Wesley and Lynette Permenter of Huxley, Texas.
Permenter won the divisional crown in her age group in the Lufkin pageant and due to having the highest scores over all the participants in the pageant, she won grand supreme queen as well.
Winning the crown is nothing new for this high school senior as she is also the current Miss Shelby County, Miss Watermelon Festival, and Miss Texas State Forestry Festival queen. Permenter has been traveling the country preparing for one particular pageant to be held in September, the Miss Texas Pageant.
Permenter applied to be an contestant in the Miss Texas Pageant and was notified her application was accepted. Permenter said, "It is a challenge competing at that level and I'm excited for the opportunity." She has been preparing for the Miss Texas Pageant through practice and studying current events.
All the local pageants have been great opportunities for practice. She also recently spent a week in New York City as part of a International Models and Talent Association (IMTA) training convention which was done in front of modeling agencies from all over the world. She has participated in a fashion show in Dothan, Alabama which included modeling wedding dresses and has trained with Victoria Henley who was in the 19th cycle of America's Next Top Model. She has also modeled for Alicia Zenobia, a clothing designer from New Orleans.
Lynette Permenter, the mother of Amy Permenter, said, "Amy has done pageants since the 5th grade. She is a very determined young lady and greatly appreciates all the support from family, friends, and community she has had along the way."
