David’s Daily Devotion for Apr. 18

April 18, 2024 - Good Morning! It's Thursday, April 18.

Do you know where the world's biggest church building is? Not surprisingly, it's in Vatican City, that tiny place in the middle of Rome that is the headquarters of the Catholic Church. St. Peter's Basilica (strangely, it's not a cathedral) was designed in the 1400's, before Columbus discovered America. It boasts a dome that rises 448 feet above Rome and contains 227,000 square feet of space. It is the largest church on earth.

April 17, 2024 - Good Morning! It's Wednesday, April 17.

Do you believe in coincidences? I'm not sure that I do. Sometimes I think that everything happens for a reason, and that seemingly unconnected events are actually connected. I had a moment like that a couple of days ago.

Our church was hosting a senior adult community luncheon. It happens every month and it's a great time of food and fellowship. Our new young pastor had planned to attend but had to take his wife to the doctor. She's due, any day now, to have a baby boy.

April 16, 2024 - Good Morning! It's Tuesday, April 16.

Do you know the name Elizabeth Holmes? Well, on this day, in 2015, Time Magazine named her one of the "100 Most Influential People in the World". She was just 30 years old, but her company, Theranos, was estimated to be worth over nine BILLION dollars! Her invention of a device that would revolutionize the process of blood tests and medical diagnostics had taken the world by storm.

And it was all a lie.

April 11, 2024 - Good Morning! It's Thursday, April 11.

This Sunday morning, I'll be teaching the broadcast Sunday School lesson here at First Baptist Center. Our focus passage will be the second chapter of the book of I Peter. The Bible is full of stories of ordinary people being transformed by the power of God and going on to do amazing things. But, perhaps, the person who went through the greatest transformation was Peter.

David's Daily Devotion for Apr. 9

April 9, 2024 - Good Morning! It's Tuesday, April 9.

I'm a city boy. I was born in Texas' biggest city, Houston, and spent my first 30 years there. Then I lived in Dallas for the next 15. We've become a nation of urban dwellers. In 2020, only 20% of Americans were considered "country people". In 1900, 60% of us lived in the country or in small towns. In 1800, 95% of Americans lived outside of cities. It's not surprising, then, that many of our hymns, largely written before 1900, include words and references related to farming and the rural life.

David's Daily Devotion for Apr. 8

April 8, 2024 - Good Morning! It's Monday, April 8.

This is a day when much of America will be captivated by a celestial event - the eclipse of the sun. But on April 8, 1965, our country was focused not on the skies, but on the cover of a magazine.

Sixty years ago, Time was the number one weekly in the world. And that week, it's cover featured red letters on a black background. The message was a question - "Is God dead?" That's one of the ten most famous headlines in history.
