Robert Clayton Thompson, 54, of Center, Texas, passed away on January 3, 2023, in Nacogdoches, Texas. He was born on November 30, 1968, in Shreveport, Louisiana, to W.C. Thompson and Susan (Driver) Johnson.

Funeral service will be held at 11am on Friday, January 6, 2023, at Mangum Funeral Home with Bro. Don Moore and Bro. Chris Collins officiating. Visitation will be held on Thursday, January 5, 2023, from 5-7PM at Mangum Funeral Home. Interment will follow at McClelland Cemetery.

Clay Thompson was raised in Huxley and he graduated from Marshall High School. The year of 1993 he met his soulmate, Donna, although it took her many years to see that he too was her soulmate. Six years later they finally reconnected and in April of 2001 he asked her to marry him. The two were united on September 15, 2001. Through the years they have been blessed with three wonderful children who were the light of his life. He was a loving husband, father, son, brother, and friend. His children and grandchildren were very special to him. He cherished every single moment spent with them and enjoyed watching them grow into the adults they have become. Nothing, however, could beat spending time with his grandchildren, Zayden and Koa. He was certainly a proud Papaw. The love he has for each of them was out of this world. Clay was a welder over the years and worked hard to always provide for his family. On his days off he enjoyed spending time with his family. His daughter, Marissa, was definitely daddy’s little girl and those two had an unbreakable bond. He looked forward to all the days when she, Zayden, and Koa would come over to be with them. Clay was so proud of her and her two boys. He also never missed an opportunity to hunt with Seth and Gage. He also enjoyed hunting with friends Ronald, Cameron, Rodney, and a host of others. If he wasn’t hunting then most of the time you could find him roping or at rodeos for Gage and Seth. He enjoyed roping with Gage and Seth, his dad W.C., his brother Javey, friend Ronald, and many others. He was blessed to spend his last days hunting which he loved. Precious time was spent on the back porch visiting with his kids while drinking his favorite, a cold Dr. Pepper and smoking Marlboro Lights. Those that knew Clay knew he was a simple man that loved Donna and his children immensely.

'When Great Trees Fall'
Maya Angelou

When great souls die,
the air around us becomes
light, rare, sterile.
We breathe, briefly.
Our eyes, briefly,
see with
a hurtful clarity.
Our memory, suddenly sharpened,
examines,
gnaws on kind words
unsaid,
promised walks
never taken.

And when great souls die,
after a period peace blooms,
slowly and always
irregularly. Spaces fill
with a kind of
soothing electric vibration.
Our senses, restored, never
to be the same, whisper to us.
They existed. They existed.
We can be. Be and be
better. For they existed.

Per Margaret’s wishes, there will be no viewing or services.

Jimmy Lee Powers, 79, of Timpson went to be with his Lord and Savior Monday, December 26, 2022. Born December 31, 1942, Jim was the youngest of four sons born to the late Emmett and Ruth Alfred Powers.

Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m. Wednesday, December 28, 2022, at Timpson Missionary Baptist Church with Bro. Levi Cohorst officiating. Interment will follow at Timpson Missionary Baptist Church Cemetery. Visitation will be held prior to the service beginning at 10:00 a.m. at Timpson Missionary Baptist Church.

Jim grew up in Timpson and was a 1961 graduate of Timpson High School. He moved to Houston shortly after graduation and was employed with Houston Lighting & Power. He and Shirley Hudson married in 1963 and they made their home in Houston for several years. He was a Vietnam veteran and served his country honorably in the U.S. Army. Upon returning home, he resumed his career with HL&P. The family later moved to Lufkin where he started his career with Lufkin Conroe Communications and remained there until his retirement after thirty-four years of service. During that time, he served eighteen years as President of CWA Local 6218 negotiating many collective bargaining agreements with LCC and Southwestern Bell. After retiring, he and Shirley moved to his hometown of Timpson. His dad was a rancher and Jim grew up around cattle. Love for the land, ranching and tending cattle was in his blood. He started the Sweetwater Cattle Company and began raising registered Brahman cattle. He loved ranching but he also missed working with people, meeting challenges, and solving problems, which was a major part of his life for many years. So, he decided to wear more than one hat and was elected Justice of the Peace, Pct. 5, serving the citizens of Shelby County for twelve years. He was a member of Timpson Missionary Baptist Church, American Legion Post 90 and Masonic Lodge 437. He was also a longtime member of the American Brahman Breeders Association and the Southwest Texas Cattleman Association.

Jim took fashion cues from no one. His signature everyday look was a pair of navy-blue coveralls and a pair of old work boots that were always paired with a cap of any kind out of his numerous collections. In his later years, you could usually find him on his tractor, riding around in the Ranger checking the cows or sitting in front of the TV. He was thoroughly interested in politics, sports, westerns, and cattle auctions. He was a quiet man most of the time, unless he was talking about cattle or his grandchildren. He spoke his mind and you always knew where you stood with him. He was set in his ways, his opinions and his beliefs and didn’t mind telling you so. He loved the Lord, his family and friends and his country. One of his greatest pleasures was being able to attend his grandchildren’s events. He was so proud of each one of them and loved telling you about all their accomplishments. They brought a special joy to his life.

He is survived by:

Wife, Shirley

Son, Justin and wife Kristin of Martinsville

Daughter-in-law, Shanna Powers of Lufkin

Grandchildren:
Rexanna DeGruy and husband Dylan of Baton Rouge, Louisiana

Maria Del Rosario Gonzalez Morales, 69, of Center, passed away Tuesday, December 20, 2022, in Monterrey, Mexico.

Visitation will be held from 5:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m., Monday, December 26, 2022, at Watson & Sons Funeral Home in Center. Funeral service will be held at 2:00 p.m., Tuesday, December 27, 2022, at Iglesia Bautista Libertad of Center in Joaquin with Pastor Rafael Ramos officiating. Interment will follow at Oaklawn Memorial Park in Center.

Mrs. Gonzalez was born September 11, 1953, in Cloete, Coahuila, Mexico, to Bernardo Morales Tristan and Nicolasa Balderas Hernandez.

She was the fourth child of seven siblings. She had five brothers and two sisters. At the age of 18 she married the love of her life, Javier Gonzalez, they were married for 50 years. They had six children, five daughters and one son; her three oldest daughters were born in Coahuila and the rest in Texas.

She grew up in Minas La Luz, Coahuila, Mexico. At a young age she had to work to help provide for her family and was not able to finish school. Later in life she moved to San Jose Del Aura, Coahuila where her husband and her built their home. Her husband began traveling to the United States, continually traveling back and forth to Mexico, then eventually she and each of her daughters traveled, settling in Center, Texas.

Together with her husband, they worked hard to provide for their family while living in a very modest way. Due to health reasons, she ended up being a stay-at-home wife and mother, where she took care of her children.

They lived in a mobile home; however, due to an unfortunate accident that caused a fire in their home, forced them to temporarily live with a nephew. After this accident they managed to acquire the house that she lived in until her husband’s death.

She often traveled to Mexico alongside her husband and children to see their families. She continued to do this even after her husband’s death. One of her last wishes was to travel to Mexico to see her family and which she managed to do before her passing.

Maria was a beloved wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, and friend to those who knew her. She loved to crochet, read, dance and loved her little dog “Baby.” Even though she was reserved she loved her family dearly and was proud of her five daughters, one son, five sons in-law, twenty-five grandchildren, two grandsons in-law, one granddaughter in-law and six great-grandchildren.

Doris Bailey Wennerbom of Center, Texas, passed away peacefully in her home on December 21st at the age of 99.

Visitation will be at noon on Thursday, December 29 at Watson and Sons in Center, Texas. A graveside service will follow at 1pm in Oaklawn Cemetery with Bro Gordon Vaughn officiating.

Doris was born on July 28, 1923, in Shelby County to Spurgeon and Isabelle Daw Bailey. She attended Joaquin school where she graduated as valedictorian in 1939. She furthered her education at Stephen F. Austin with a major in Physical Education. Her first teaching job was in Port Arthur teaching PE. It was while teaching there that the school nurse introduced her to her nephew, MT “Bo” Wennerbom. He was an air force pilot in town on a leave. It was love at first sight, and after corresponding thru letters until Bo was able to return to the states, they were married in 1945. They then moved to College Station where Bo attended Texas A&M on a GI Bill and earned a degree in Engineering while Doris took in laundry from Corp students at Texas A&M to help pay the bills. During this time they were blessed with a beautiful daughter, Susan, born in 1946. After graduation, the family moved to Beaumont and Doris taught girl’s PE at South Park High School. Over the years, they moved several times as Bo’s career advanced with every job. Some of the cities they lived in were Dunkirk, New York; Bay City, Michigan; Cordele, Georgia; and Perrysburg, Ohio. Many lifelong friends were made throughout the years.

Eventually Doris stopped teaching and devoted herself to being a housewife for 59 years. When Bo retired from Schindler elevators, they bought a home in Center and never moved again. If you asked Doris at any time how she was doing, she always responded that she was wonderful. She was a genuine optimist and always had a kind word.

She is preceded in death by her dear husband Bo; her daughter, Susan; her parents; her precious sister, Joyce Weatherall; and her great-niece, Shelby Weatherall.

Left to cherish her memory are:

Nephews:
William (Bill) Weatherall and wife Marguerite of The Woodlands, Texas
Charles Weatherall and wife Carol of Denton, Texas

Cousin, Etola Jones and husband Micky of Huxley, Texas

Great-nieces and nephews and numerous friends

The family would like to thank Doris’ caregivers, Jennifer Edge, Mercy Moody and husband L.C., Vicky Sneed, and many others who have helped Doris over the past 6 years. Bo’s last wish was that Doris would be able to stay home and never reside in a nursing home and that was made possible because of your devotion to her. Also, much appreciation to Affinity Hospice for making Doris more comfortable.
