January 25, 2019 - As we once again plan our Memorial Day program that will happen on Monday, May 27, 2019 we would like to collect as many photos of those from Shelby County who died during a time of war that are available.  We honor those who were killed in action as well as those who died of other causes such as accidents and disease who are native from Shelby County or are now buried here. 

Flag Half Staff Alert for President H.W. Bush

January 1, 2019 - Flags that have been at half staff for the past 30 days (November 30 - December 30) in honor of the passing of President Bush should now be raised.


December 2, 2018 - In honor and tribute to the memory of President George H.W. Bush and as an expression of public sorrow, the President of the United States has issued a proclamation ordering the flag of the United States to be displayed at half-staff from now until sunset on December 30, 2018.

Pearl Harbor Day VFW Program

December 7, 2018 - It began when Japanese aircraft appeared in the air over Pearl Harbor, Hawaii just before 8:00 a.m. on Sunday morning, December 7th, 1941. When the attack ceased shortly before 10:00 a.m., less than two hours after it began, American forces had paid a fearful price. Eighteen (18) ships were either damaged or sunk, 180 aircraft were destroyed and 2,403 were dead and thousands of others wounded.

US Flag Half Staff Alert

November 8, 2018 - As a mark of solemn respect for the victims of the terrible act of violence perpetrated in Thousand Oaks, California, on November 7, 2018, the President of the United States has issued a Proclamation that the Flag of the United States be flown at half staff until sunset, Saturday, November 10, 2018.

All flags flying with the US Flag should also be lowered. If you have US Flag that remains outdoors and cannot be lowered, respect can be shown by tying a black ribbon or cord to the top of the staff.

Bells of Peace: A World War One Remembrance

November 7, 2018 - At 11am on November 11, 1918, the fighting ended. Bells tolled around the world to mark the end of the Great War. The Texas WWI Centennial Commemoration is asking municipalities, religious congregations, and organizations around to participate in Bells of Peace: A World War One Remembrance on November 11 at 11am local time in honor the 116,516 American men & women who died in WWI.

Women in Service Observance

October 11, 2018 - Women in the military have a history that extends over 400 years into the past throughout a large number of cultures and nations. World Wars I and II saw over 362,000 American women serving during war time. As of July 2016 women made up 14.6% of the US military and their role has changed significantly over the years from clerical duties to ground combat soldiers to fighter pilots.
