May 5, 2019 - This week the House passed SB 2, the Texas Taxpayer Transparency Act. If signed into law, taxpayers will be provided with information on who proposed to raise their property tax rates, the amount of which the taxes increased, and where and when they can go to ensure their voices are heard.
April 26, 2019 - I hope everyone had a blessed Easter. Coming back to Austin after a long weekend is always tough, but there are only 32 days left in the 86th Legislative Session. However, the next few weeks are the busiest weeks of the session. There are many procedural deadlines are rapidly approaching which determine if a bill moves or dies. I encourage you to reach out, either supporting or opposing the various legislation yet to be debated. It is with your input that I am able to best represent you as we finish the 86th Legislative session.
April 22, 2019 - This week we passed the 100 day point of the 86th Legislative Session. From here on in, it is a mad dash until May 27th when the Legislature adjourns "sine die" or without a day. The days, hearings and debates get longer as more and more legislation comes before the House. In fact, Wednesday this week, the House conducted its normal debate, finishing around 6:00pm at which time the House State Affairs Committee began a hearing on many important bills, which lasted until almost 7:00am on Thursday morning, hearing from over 400 witnesses.
April 19, 2019 Austin - Speaker of the House Dennis Bonnen today appointed State Representative Chris Paddie (R-Marshall) to serve on the Executive Committee of The Energy Council, a national, non-partisan organization providing a forum for policymakers, energy companies and industry professionals to discuss energy and environmental policy and other issues of importance to energy-producing states.
April 12, 2019 - One of the most pressing issues facing the 86th Legislature is dealing with the aftermath of Hurricane Harvey and working to prepare for future storms.
We took a significant step in the rebuilding efforts in the budget process with the House proposing to spend $2.7 billion to assist with funds needed to not only rebuild but to keep the areas affected by Harvey operating in normal order.
April 8, 2019 - This was a monumental week in the Texas House of Representatives. This week, the House overwhelmingly passed HB 3 that invests $9 billion in Texas classrooms to boost student achievement, support teacher quality, reduce recapture and provide property tax relief.
HB 3 is the first major rewrite of school finance laws undertaken without the threat of a court order, and it puts a stop to decades of patchwork fixes by creating a more equitable public education system.
March 29, 2019 - Just after midnight, late Wednesday evening, or more accurately, early Thursday morning, the House unanimously passed HB 1, the state budget. I am proud to support the House's version of the budget which makes a historic investment in our public schools, adding a whopping $9 billion for our teachers and kids.
March 22, 2019 - This week the House began debating legislation as a body and we passed several measures over to the Senate for consideration. Next week, we will debate House Bill 1, the general appropriations act, better known as the state budget. HB 1 is the only legislation that we are constitutionally required to pass each session.
Some of the bills that the House passed out this week include:
March 15, 2019 - How time flies! We are almost half way through the 86th Legislative Session. Last Friday was the bill filing deadline and once that deadline had come and gone, there were 7,281 bills and constitutional amendments filed in the House and Senate. While a number of them are duplicates or companions, that is still a lot of legislation to work through.
March 8, 2019 - This has been a busy week in Austin. Friday, March 8th was the bill filing deadline which always leads to flurry of activity. Unfortunately, that is also the day that we see many not-o-great ideas get turned into legislation. But rest assured, I will remain on the look out and be vigilant as we make our way through the final eighty days of the legislative session.
