Judy Faye Parker Bailey, 71, of Shelbyville, passed away Friday, April 15, 2022, in Shelbyville.

Funeral service will be held at 2:00 p.m., Tuesday, April 19, 2022, at Watson & Sons Funeral Home in Center with visitation beginning at Noon. Bro. Dan Fleming will officiate. Interment will follow at Liberty Hill Cemetery in San Augustine.

Judy was born April 4, 1951, to Floyd and Virginia Parker in Ruston, Louisiana. Judy served her family and friends her entire life, selflessly and completely. A wonderful wife and mother to her husband and kids. She was generous and kind to everyone she met.

Mama to her kids and mema to her grandkids and great grandkids, she loved to read and plant flowers and tend a garden. She rarely left home without a sharpshooter and bucket in case she seen a wildflower or mysterious bush or small tree that needed transplanted. She was an outstanding cook and had a passion for fishing. She enjoyed science fiction, sweet tea, and coffee. With beauty and grace, she devoted her entire life to her family. Everyone will truly miss her as we look forward to seeing her in Heaven.

Billie Jean "Tootsie" Myers Goodner, age 90, of San Augustine, Texas, passed away early Monday, April 11, 2022, at her residence. 

Mrs. Goodner was born September 16, 1931, in Comanche, Oklahoma, to parents Harvey Jesse and George Dewey "Georgia" Hendricks Myers. A longtime resident of San Augustine County, she had lived in New Caney, Texas, for several years before moving to East Texas. She enjoyed baking and faithfully taking care of her family. 

In New Caney, she was actively involved with First Baptist Church and worked in the church's library as well as serving with the women's auxiliary. Upon moving to East Texas, she became a member of Little's Chapel Baptist Church.

Sharon Jean Frasier Lilly, 68, of Timpson, Texas, passed away on April 13, 2022, in Timpson, Texas. She was born on October 23, 1953, in Port Arthur, Texas, to the late Theos and Nellie (Smith) Frasier. Graveside service will be held at 10:00 am on Saturday, April 16, 2022, at Pleasant Grove Cemetery in Timpson, Texas, officiated by Bro. Mike Calloway. 

A visitation will be held from 5:00 to 7:00 pm on Friday, April 15, 2022 at Taylor Funeral Home in Timpson, Texas.

Sharon loved spending time with family, the outdoors camping and fishing as well as the beach. She also enjoyed growing vegetables and canning food for people. One of her favorite things to do was read.

Madge Nece (Luman) Metcalf, 90, of Houston, Texas, passed away on April 14, 2022 in Houston, Texas. She was born on December 8, 1931, in Patroon, Shelby County Texas, to the late John Lum Luman and Dollie Mae Metcalf Luman. Funeral services will be held at 1:00 PM Saturday, April 16, 2022 at Mangum Funeral Home. Interment will follow at Rather Cemetery.

Visitation will be held prior to the service beginning at 12:00 noon on Saturday, April 16, 2022 at Mangum Funeral Home.

Madge was raised in Shelby County. She met the love of her life, D.M. Metcalf and they were married on April 13, 1947. They spent more than 40 years together before his passing in 1987, raising three wonderful children. Madge was as excellent seamstress. She also enjoyed quilting. Madge played the piano at many churches through the years. She was a loving wife, mother, grandmother, and great grandmother. She enjoyed spending time with her family.

Peggy Lynn Maxey, 79, of Many, LA, passed away on Tuesday, April 12, 2022 at Toledo Nursing Center in Zwolle, LA. She was born on Tuesday, August 25, 1942 in Paxton, Texas. 

Memorial services will be held on Monday, April 18, 2022 at 11:00 AM at Aimwell Baptist Church with Rev. Stephen Neesley officiating. Visitation to begin at 10:00 AM, an hour before services at Aimwell Baptist Church, Zwolle, LA.

Peggy was a loving wife and mother. Not only raising 2 children, but taking on that role for 2 of her grandchildren. She used her skills to open and run a home daycare for many years. She was a leader in the children’s ministry at Aimwell Baptist Church for over 20 years.

Peggy was an accomplished seamstress. Sewing wedding gowns, formals for the Tamale Fiesta and sewing for family and friends. She even fashioned the queen’s robe used for many years at the fiesta’s pageant. 

She was preceded in death by her parents, Arlie George Thompson and Eva Verona (Hutto) Thompson; husband, R. L. Maxey; son, Tony Lynn Maxey; sister, Rose Ann Rideout; brothers, Arlie Gene Thompson and Charlie B. Thompson; and her brother-in-law, Edsel Warr.

Larry Smith, 63, of Shelbyville, passed away Sunday, April 10, 2022, in Shelbyville.

Born May 8, 1958, Larry is the son of Marcell Stone and Sammie Gene Smith. He was baptized at South Groves Baptist Church by Bro. Sims on April 5, 1971. He lived most of his life in the Huxley Community of Shelby County.  Nicknamed “Jungle Jim”, Larry loved hunting and fishing. He worked on oil rigs most of his life, during which time he was hurt and later began having health problems. In 1995, he married his wife of 27 years, Connie Smith. Larry loved his family.

Sylvia Lee Owens, 79, of Center, passed away in her home Friday, April 8, 2022, in Center.

Graveside service will be held 10:00 a.m., Monday, April 11, 2022, at White Rock Cemetery in Center. Reception will be held after funeral at White Rock Missionary Baptist Church.

Born December 13, 1942, Sylvia is the daughter of Lola Jolly Owens and Odie Owens. She enjoyed gardening and spending time with the grandbabies. Sylvia was a member of Sulphur Springs Baptist Church. She taught Sunday school for many years and sang in the choir at White Rock Missionary Baptist Church. She loved reading her Bible.

Leatha Juanita Adams, 82, of Granbury, Texas, passed away on April 8, 2022, in Granbury, Texas. She was born on September 16, 1939, in Corsicana, Texas, to the late Loarnette and Pauline (Ashcraft) Moore.

Funeral service will be held at 2:00 pm on Monday, April 11, 2022, at Timpson Missionary Baptist Church, officiated by Bro. Levi Cohorst. Interment will follow at Woodlawn Cemetery, Timpson, Texas.

A visitation will be held prior to the service from 10:00 to 11:30 am at Timpson Missionary Baptist Church, Timpson, Texas.

Leatha Juanita went to walk the golden streets of Heaven on April 8, 2022, in Granbury, Texas. She was born September 16,1939 in Corisicana, Texas to Larnette Moore and Pauline Ashcraft Moore. She was one of 4 children. 

She married Ray Grooms in 1957 in Ft. Worth, Texas. They had 2 children; Paula Jean and Johnny Michael. She divorced Ray in 1960 and married Carlos Jerry Adams 1961. She inherited 2 children Wanda Mae and Gary Lee. Jerry and Leatha went on to have 2 other children, Jerry David and Rodney Lemon. 

While living in Ft. Worth she was a part of a square-dancing group. She loved to go bowling. Her and Jerry loved to travel on his plane. She became a member of the Eastern Star. She worked for the city of Ft. Worth for 20 years where she retired. 

They moved to Timpson, Texas. Where she was still an avid member of the Eastern Star. She was a very active member of the Timpson Missionary Baptist Church. 

She was not one to sit still, so in her young 60s she went to work for the Cobb lumber company. She retired again when they decided to close the business. 

She loved to work outside, teach the granddaughters to crochet, make all types of dresses and be busy outside mowing. 

She is survived by:

James Lee Durham, age 63, of Center, Texas passed away on Sunday, April 3, 2022 at Nacogdoches Medical Center. 

James, the oldest of six siblings, was born January 6, 1959 in San Diego, California to Carolyn Evans. He became an accomplished painter and painted many of the homes around Shelby County. He was a man of many talents, a true handyman. When healthy, James loved fishing, hunting, target shooting, gardening and just being outdoors. Later, he developed a passion for cooking. Some of his favorite things were guns, knives, swords and cookbooks. He always had a knife (or several of them) on his belt, boot or in his pockets, that was just James.

He is preceded in death by his grandparents, Charles Laurel and Ada Eddeath Tindol.

He is survived by:

Daughter, Amanda Anderson and husband Joe

Grandchildren, Nicolas and Camille Anderson

James will be memorialized in a small service at Mt. Herman Cemetery in Center, Texas where his ashes will be laid to rest between the grandparents that he loved and respected. Date pending.

At only 63, James was taken from us too soon due to a long, hard battle with alcoholism. Our hearts go out to the family and loved ones of anyone struggling with this cruel disease. Born September 15, 1948, in Shelby County, Mary is the daughter of Odell Fultz and Barnett R. Mobley. She was a member of McClelland Community Church in Shelby County.

Born January 28, 1951, Mark is the son of Cecil Frances Michaelson and Fieldon Douglas Hohimer.  He loved to fish and travel.

Bruce May, 75, of Joaquin, TX, passed away on Saturday morning, April 2, 2022, in Shreveport, LA. Marvin Bruce May, Sr. was born on July 24, 1946, in West Monroe, LA to the late Prentice Osley and Myrtle Lucille Dalaney May. He married Connie Faye Carter on Oct. 3, 1966, in Center, TX.

Bruce served as a Drill Sergeant in the U.S. Army, retiring after 21 years as First Sergeant. During his service, he was stationed in many places including Vietnam, Korea, and Germany. After his service, he worked as an electrician at Texas Utilities in Tatum until his retirement.

Bruce loved to hunt and fish with his boys. He and Connie enjoyed raising a big garden every year and they also loved traveling in their R.V.

He was preceded in death by his parents; daughter, Peggy Yvonne May; brother, Wayne May; and in-laws, Ernest and Birdie Carter. 

He is survived by:

Johnnie Lee Emerson, 70, of Joaquin, passed away Sunday, April 3, 2022, in Nacogdoches.

Funeral Service will be held 10:00 a.m., Wednesday, April 6, 2022, at Watson & Sons Chapel with Bro. Jim Sullivan officiating. Interment will follow at O.E. Price Cemetery in Logansport, Louisiana.

Born September 13, 1951, in Shreveport, Louisiana, Johnnie is the son of Lois C. Stephens and D.W. “Red” Emerson. He served in the United States Army and later worked as a meat cutter at Wal-Mart. Johnnie loved Louis L’Amour Books. He was of the Baptist faith.

He is survived by:
