May 30, 2018 - This Legacy series of Daniels School could not be complete without mention of the man for whom this school is named, Chatman H. Daniels.
May 29, 2018 - In memory of Jane Arnold, class of 1956, we honor her as one who kept the legacy alive with her leadership for many years of the Daniels School Alumni Reunion. The reunions lead by her occurred until illness in her family and eventually with herself limited her activities. A new group of Daniels graduates accepted the challenge and are still managing to keep the reunions going.
May 28, 2018 - Mrs. Hazel Dixon Daniels expressed memories of her class of 1947 that graduated 71 years ago. These memories are found in Dr. Tatum’s book, ‘Dew Drops on the Pine Needles.”
She remembers three of her teachers: Mody Nobles, who played softball with the pupils. (Can you imagine Mrs. Nobles playing softball). She was a well-remembered teacher by all who took classes from her.
May 17, 2018 - As the Houston Rockets participate in the Conference Finals, it brings back memories of C. H. Daniels Bobcats winning many basketball games during the 50’s and 60’s. Basketball was the major sport during that time. They did not have a football team. Daniels began competing in Texas District in the 1950-51 season (according to Dr. Tatum’s books previously mentioned). Winnings were: District State Champs in 1953; District in 54-55-56-57 and 58; District/State again in 1959; District in 1960-61 and 64; District /State in 1966.
May 16, 2018 - Willard Ira McClelland is a proud 1955 graduate of C. H. Daniels High School and he loved his school, his teachers, and the classmates. Two of them, Mildred Richards Johnson and Baby Lou Gardner, have shared memories of him as a student. As still Center residents, looked upon him as a Brother during their school days and are still friends.
May 15, 2018 - Minnie Jewel Richards Hawkins is a 1948 graduate of C. H. Daniels. Just think 70 years ago she was all smiles waiting to march across the stage and receive her diploma with hopes of starting on a higher education degree from Prairie View College in Prairie View, Texas, where she had been accepted. She finished in 1952 and became a teacher in the Houston area. Dr. Charles Tatum who was her classmate also went to Prairie View where he received several degrees and then returned there to teach geography for several years.
May 13, 2018 - Happy Mother’s Day to all alumni and descendants of Daniels School. Accolades to the teachers of Daniels High who are still with us as well. Who was the mother of Daniels High through all the years of its existence? To me and perhaps to many others it was the one who can be remembered the most for being there for them through thick and thin. One to give advice to the students. One who would say: ‘Forget where you came from and look forward to where you are going’. Several could be named but only one stands out in this article. Others may be mentioned later.
May 11, 2018 - As we continue to recognize the 50-year anniversary closing of Daniels High, it is time to recognize some of the most fantastic teachers who had classes in the buildings. They, both living and those who have passed on, will always be remembered as ‘favorite’ teachers. Many students of Daniels High can remember certain teachers because they helped them along the way. There are a few students who will opt to forget some of them because they felt they did not put forth a great effort to cooperate with them, and perhaps received a bad grade. Oh well, so is life.
May 9, 2018 - C. H. Daniels High School can be remembered for initially educating professional nurses, medical doctors, academia doctors, secretaries, definitely many teachers, engineers, city councilmen and councilwomen, bankers, computer analysts, computer technicians, lawyers, post office workers, housewives, laborers, and for now many retirees.
May 8, 2018 - One may say I did not finish from Daniels so why should I attend the school reunions that are being held every other year. Well my answer to those who say so is: 'It is only in your heart that this school was the beginning of future enhancements of education for us. It continued for our ancestors and they survived and now we can appreciate everything they were taught and went through with life." Reunions can bring classmates and friends together.
