January 26, 2017 - Linda Snell presented the book program America's White Table for Delta Gamma for their January 9th meeting in Center. The book reminds us to remember those lost in war. Members were encouraged to present the book in a program to area schools to instill patriotism and remembrance of those lost but not forgotten.
Delta Gamma is part of an international organization of key women educators, Delta Kappa Gamma.
January 25, 2017 Waco, Texas - According to a press release from Baylor University, Olivia Grace Worsham, a 2013 Graduate of Joaquin HS, was among the more than 3,900 Baylor University students named to the Dean's Academic Honor Roll for the 2016 fall semester.
Worsham was the valedictorian of her graduating class and is working towards a degree from Baylor's College of Arts and Sciences.
To be named to the Dean's List, a student must be an undergraduate with a minimum grade-point average of 3.7, while enrolled in a minimum of 12 semester hours. Baylor University is a private Christian University and a nationally ranked research institution. The University provides a vibrant campus community for more than 16,000 students by blending interdisciplinary research with an international reputation for educational excellence and a faculty commitment to teaching and scholarship. January 25, 2017 - City of Tenaha Mayor Carl Jernigan signed a proclamation for School Board Recognition Month. The Mayor declared appreciation to the members of the Tenaha School Board and proclaimed the month of January 2017, as School Board Appreciation Month in Tenaha, Texas.
Mayor Jernigan expresses through the proclamation, "I urge all citizens to join me in recognizing the dedication and hard work of local school board members and in working with them to mold an education system that meets the needs of both today's and tomorrow's children.
January 24, 2017 - Nettie's Nook and Sammich Shop congratulates Tina Ornelas, winner of the Coca Cola Polar Bear. The business held an open house event and celebrated their one-year anniversary on Tuesday, January 24, 2017 and at 3:30pm the name of the winner was drawn.
After being informed by Annette Peters, Nettie's Nook and Sammich Shop's owner, Ornelas stated she would be sharing her bear with her grandchild.
January 20, 2017 - An open house was held at Blount Pharmacy on Monday, January 16, 2017 to mark a new milestone for the business which was to welcome Karen Moss and Anne Magnus as the new owners and to wish Gene and Betty Kay Blount a happy retirement after 37 years.
Karen Moss expressed her excitement over being the new owner with her mother, Anne Magnus, "I'm feeling nervous excitement; it's getting better though, I'm doing what I love which is actually being a pharmacist, taking care of people, and spending more time with my family - that's going to be the best part." Moss finished by saying how much the support of the community has meant to her, "People here seem really nice so far and I just love it."
Moss is from Center and she has been a pharmacist in Alto for nine and a half years. Moss and her mother spoke to Gene Blount back in January of last year after hearing of his consideration to sell the store.
Gene Blount said, "We have just been incredibly blessed with the store, we started in June of 1980. Just opened it up in a portable building right over here on the edge of the slab. We rented a couple of years then we built this building in 1983, I think."
Reflecting on the 37 years of the drug store, Blount said, "When we moved here my oldest daughter was 11 and my youngest daughter was 4. [All three daughters] finished school here and they all went to college and got degrees."
"I wanted to live in a rural area and I have and we just, like I say, have just been incredibly blessed and we have enjoyed our time here. After that many years, so many changes in independent retail pharmacy, I'm getting old and I don't change that well anymore." Blount expressed how much he has enjoyed his job and he had a really good relief pharmacist which allowed him to take off for traveling but it was just the hassle of a business which was making him consider selling and then he heard from Karen and Ann.
Gene Blount was a pharmacist in Center, Carthage, and San Augustine after college from 1971 to 1980. Around 1979 he decided he would like to have his own store in the Joaquin area which is were he grew up and graduated from school.
January 20, 2017 (HUXLEY, TX) - The Sabine River Authority of Texas (SRA) was pleased to award the City of Huxley a Community Assistance Program Grant on January 19th as part of SRA’s Fiscal Year 2017 Economic Development Initiative.
The $10,000 check will be used to leverage local funds to repair and rehabilitate Huxley’s water treatment system clearwell tank to reduce levels of trihalomethanes and trihaloacetic acids in treated water. David Montagne, SRA’s Executive Vice-President and General Manager, in a letter to Huxley, wrote “[t]he City’s project to repair and rehabilitate its water treatment system clearwell tank to reduce levels of trihalomethanes and trihaloacetic acids in treated water an initiative that SRA supports in its efforts to improve water and wastewater systems throughout the basin” and “SRA looks forward to working with the City in the future as we continue to focus on increasing the economic vitality of the Sabine River Basin”
Funds provided for the Community Assistance Grant Program must fall within four project categories, which include 1) Water Supply; 2) Wastewater Management; 3) Water Conservation; and 4) Water Quality and are limited to $10,000 per project. Funds for the grant for Huxley were approved by SRA’s Board of Directors in December 2016.
In order to be eligible for the Community Assistance Program, applicants should be a governmental entity, district, or a non-profit, member-owned water supply corporation or sewer service corporation and located within the Sabine River Basin of Texas. Water resource projects should be consistent with the statutory mission of SRA. Created as a conservation and reclamation district in 1949, responsibilities of the SRA are to control, store, preserve and distribute the waters of the Sabine River and its tributary system for useful purposes.
The Sabine River Basin covers a large portion of East Texas with a population of over 551,000 in all or part of 21 counties according to U.S. 2010 Census figures. A large portion of that area is rural in nature.

January 19, 2017 - Congratulations to Shelbyville’s own Jacob Bragg who was invited to attend the 2017 Presidential Inauguration ceremony in Washington D.C.
Jacob received this invitation due to his passion for politics and government; along with his continued success and academic accomplishments in high school. Jacob is active in Debate and Public Speaking, so attending this storied ceremony encompasses many things Jacob values.
A special appreciation is extended to Representative Louie Gohmert who graciously awarded the Inaugural tickets to Jacob. This is a rare opportunity and such a privilege.
Jacob’s parents, Cory and Sherry Bragg, along with Shelbyville High School are proud of Jacob, and excited to have Shelbyville represented at the Inauguration ceremony in Washington D.C. this year.
January 19, 2017 - The Shelby County Children's Advocacy Center was presented with a check from Gibsons on Tuesday, January 17, 2017. The funds for the donation were raised through the first annual Gibsons Truck Pull Fundraiser held on Saturday, October 22, 2016.
Lenny Dubuis, Gibsons Regional Manager, presented the check which was received on behalf of Shelby County Children's Advocacy Center by Denise Merriman, SCCAC Executive Director, and Jade Miller, SCCAC Forensic Interviewer.
The amount was a match contribution of the total funds rasied during the truck pull.

January 18, 2017 - On Saturday, January 14th, 2017, District 19 of the Veterans of Foreign Wars held a meeting at Trinity Post 6899 where this year’s District’s Voice of Democracy Winners were recognized. Sponsored by Shelby County Memorial VFW Post 8904 and the Auxiliary two of the top three winners were from Joaquin High School.
First place went to Senior Darby Hughes who received an engraved plaque and check for $500.00. Accompanying Darby were proud family members; Grandmother Susan McCann, Sister, Keaton Hughes and Parents Wayne and Trinia Hughes. Darby recited her award-winning essay to the membership at the meeting. She also finished 15th in the state competition and received a $2,000.00 scholarship from the Department of Texas.
Joaquin Senior Reagan Hovey placed third in the district and was awarded an engraved plaque and a check for $200.00. His parents Mary and Todd Hovey were also on hand to share in their son’s accomplishment.
The post and auxiliary members are so very proud of these two young citizens and the other 15 who entered the competition from Joaquin High School. As in the past 70 years another competition will be held during the next school year. If you are in grades 9-12 we hope you will consider entering.
January 17, 2017 - President Helen Collard called the January 16 Golden Harvest Ministries Club to order at 11:30 AM in the Fellowship Hall of the First Baptist Church in Center, Texas. She began with a scripture reading, followed by W.A. Moore leading the opening prayer, and Harold Hanson leading members and guests in singing favorite hymns.
Joe Anderson, Terry Gray, Walter Manning, and Mary McSwain celebrated January birthdays. Joe and Linda Anderson, Alice and Tommy West, and Johnie and Terry Jo Gray celebrated January anniversaries.
Jheri-Lynn McSwain, Shelby County Extension Agent for Family and Consumer Science, presented the program about the success of the Shelby County Community Garden. She discussed the 2017 goals for the community which will include a 'Gardening 101" class offered to both adults and youth.
The Golden Harvest Ministries Club membership is open to all Shelby County residents 55 and older, and meetings are the 3rd Monday of each month at 11:30 AM in the Fellowship Hall of the First Baptist Church in Center. Visitors are always welcome to bring a covered dish for the luncheon and enjoy the fellowship and a wide variety of programs.
