Members of Sam Samford Lodge #149 presented fans to Shelby County Outreach Ministries for distribution. Pictured are (from left) Lodge members Roger Doyle, Sammy Arnold, Paul Ragan, Alan Ricketson and Shelby County Outreach Ministries Executive Director Sherry Harding.

July 25, 2016 - Members of Sam Samford Lodge #149 in Center had a cool idea, get some fans and give them to people in Shelby County who otherwise would not have one.

Every summer the news media tells of someone who died due to extreme heat in their home.

Several churches, businesses and other organizations joined the effort by donating cold hard cash. They are: Antioch Baptist Church, Center Auto Repair, Center Glass, Center Noon Lions Club, Center Tire Company, Farmers State Bank, First Methodist Church, General Shelters, Shelby Savings Bank, Texas State Bank, Watson and Sons Funeral Home and Wal-Mart Supercenter.

Shelby County Outreach Ministries will distribute the over 100 fans.

July 25, 2016 - Shelia Burch, formerly of Center, recently moved to Bowie, Maryland. This summer the grand kids have been visiting in Maryland and before they went back to Texas they wanted to do something for the police officers with all the negativity in the media. They chose to make goody bags for the officers to thank them for their service.

The girls delivered them to the Police Department. Lt. John Knott along with other officers happily accepted them. As the grand kids introduced themselves, the policemen gave each of them a bag of goodies as well for their gesture of kindness.

Shelia said, "I am proud of my granddaughters!"

This is the sweet email Shelia Burch received from Lt. John Knotts:

In today’s world the fact that they thought of us and wanted to do something for us means so much more than you can know.  It restores our belief in society and the better nature of man, reminding us of why we do this job.  Thank you for bring them by, they were a bright spot in our day that will not soon be forgotten.

July 25, 2016 - Members and guests of the Timpson Area Genealogical and Heritage Society “took another look” at some of the historical buildings around town at their July meeting last Thursday. The audience viewed a slide show of recent photos of interesting architectural details on homes and buildings around town and then tried to identify the building to which it belongs. Each attendee was given a numbered answer sheet upon which he or she was to write the identity of the building in the photo, with “where Aunt Martha used to live” or “the building next to where the old ice plant was” being acceptable answers. After a pause, a photo of the entire building was shown. The person getting the most correct answers would win a gift certificate to Whataburger.

The difficulty of identification varied widely, with some details universally recognized and others a mystery to almost everyone. From the chimney on the Leonard Tyer house on Bear Drive to the brickwork on the Blair building downtown to the shrubbery leading to the entrance to THS, contestants were visually whisked all over the city. Though not really a building, SoSo Park's stone bridge and the bronze WPA plaque from the park's entrance were included. Most buildings were featured only once, but some local buildings contain so many interesting details that they were in several slides. The old bank building has so many interesting details that it was the subject of three slides. After all twenty-eight eight architectural elements and the buildings to which they belong had been shown, the seaarch for the contestant with the highest score began by counting down the number of items missed. The difficulty of the contest was evident when it was revealed that everyone had missed at least ten of the twenty-eight questions! TAGHS member Garland Downing had the high score and was awarded the gift certificate. There were no losers, though, since audience members shared many wonderful facts and memories about the buildings and homes shown.

TAGHS member Garland Downing had the high score and was awarded the gift certificate.

TAGHS meets at 2pm on the third Wednesday of each month in the Meeting Room of the Timpson Public Library, located on the corner of Austin and Bremond streets. The public is invited.

Youth at the Sheriff's Department

July 20, 2016 (Photos by Sonya Wilburn) - The White Rock Missionary Baptist Church youth group traveled to the Shelby County Sheriff's Department and the Center Police Department to deliver baskets of goodies and words of appreciation on Thursday, July 14, 2016.

Following recent events in the world, the kids told Sonya Wilburn, youth leader at the church, they wanted to do something nice for local law enforcement. Wilburn told the kids that it does not matter what your skin color is or who you are - every life matters. No matter who passes away someone is affected by death because they have parents, children or close friends and their life matters.

Wilburn said, "We wanted to do something nice to show appreciation to our law enforcement. All you ever hear is bad things going on in the world and I wish we could change that but we can't, but we can sure encourage people to do what's right. Every life matters!"

The group went to both the departments and presented them with a basket full of chips and candy and a message, 'Have some treats before you hit the streets!'

While at the police department, officers gave the youth a tour of the station and let them try on some of the equipment an officer wears. All enjoyed the visit.

Youth at the Center Police Department

July 20, 2016 - The Center Police Department is proud and excited to accept the needed donations from the donors listed at the end of this article.

After learning that the police department was in dire need of a protective cover for their marked patrol fleet. The local business community has come together and graciously donated 100% of the funds and or materials needed to install a carport for the marked Police cars.

This construction project will ensure that the Patrol units are protected as best possible from the extreme elements (heat) and assist in extending the life of the sensitive and expensive electronic equipment within.

This project was made possible through the donations of funds, material and labor, which will assist our Center Police Department in being ready and able to make our community a better place.

As always, it is the Center Police Department's goal to ensure, "our community our commitment" extends to all.

The City of Center and the Center Police Dept. continue to be pleased to have such a helpful and gracious business community in and around Center; Shelby County, Texas.

Center City Council approval granted on 07/11/2016 project completed on 07/15/2016. We give a dedicated thank you to all of our local supporters.
Sincerely: Staff of the Center Police Dept.

Signed,
Jim Albers - Chief of Police
