March 19, 2015 - (More Photos) The Shelby County Fit Fun Run & Walk 5K was held on Saturday, March 14, 2015 at the Center Park Pond Pavilion behind the baseball park beside Center High School. Around 40 runners and walkers including men, women and children arrived for the event benefiting the Shelby County Outreach Ministries.
The trail they followed took them to the softball complex, all the way to the John D. Windham Civic Center and then back to the pavilion. Shelby County 4-H Volunteer students Emilee Elliott and Allison Stuever were in charge of the water station midway through the course, and they provided much relief for thirsty people.
Participants arrived one at a time at the pavilion and received water and oranges to quench their thirst and await the arrival of fellow runners and walkers. Everyone appeared to have a good time and made it to the end.
There was an entry fee of five canned items per person. Some people arrived with five cans and some brought extra bringing the total accumulated amount to around 200 cans. These cans were then contributed to the Shelby County Outreach Ministries for distribution to those in need.
Jheri-Lynn McSwain, Agrilife Extension Agent, organized the event and she was assisted during the event by Rene Sanders who volunteered to help.
Sponsors included Brookshire Brothers who donated refreshments including oranges and water and Nacogdoches Medical Center who provided pedometers.
March 17, 2015 - Summer Koltonski, a resident of Shelbyville, is racing Ironman Texas to raise money for the Cathy Fields Memorial Scholarship. Ironman Texas is May 16, 2015 in The Woodlands, TX. This year Ironman Texas is the North American Championship.
The Ironman consists of a 2.4 mile open water swim, a 112 mile bike ride, and 26.2 mile run. She completed the 140.6 mile race last year in 16 hours, 27 minutes, and 36 seconds. This year she’s training harder than ever to beat her time! Her goal is to raise $1,000! You can donate through her Go Fund Me Account or at Farmers State Bank. If you donate through the bank, please let them know it is for Summer’s Ironman Race!

March 14, 2015 - Shelby County Chamber of Commerce Ambassadors, friends, and family gathered at Southern Seasons Thursday, March 12th to welcome and congratulate Shana Brittain, the new owner, at a new member ribbon cutting.
Shana Brittain bought Southern Seasons back in January from Mindy Smotherman who opened the business in 2009. Southern Seasons has been a charming addition to the top of the hill in Shelbyville and Brittain is excited to continue filling Southern Seasons with irresistibles and indulgences.

March 17, 2015 - Beth Brown, the owner of Center Health & Harmony, and her daughter, Chloe Brown recently attended a week long training in Orlando, Florida. The training was hosted by The Trinity School of Natural Health. Beth and Chloe are now Certified Natural Health Professionals and will be able to do health and wellness consultations for clients.
This week long event consisted of 28 courses during 7 long days. They enjoyed learning so much new and beneficial information as well as meeting and interacting with knowledgeable instructors.
They also made some important contacts and look forward to staying in touch with the new people they met. Some of the coursework included learning about the importance of ph in the body, general health, nutrition, emotions, water, sleep, glandular system, digestive system, respiratory, immune system, herbs, healthy cooking and shopping, skin, nervous system, headaches, energy, weight loss, Biblical perspective of natural health and much more.

March 17, 2015 - Delbert Beckham of Delbert Beckham's Salvaged Steel Sculpture presented the program on the history of his art with slides of various forms of sculpture to members and guests of the Golden Harvest Ministries Club at their March 16 meeting.
Ronald Barbee won the art door prize made and donated by Delbert.

March 16, 2015 - Larry Rymal, a Joaquin resident, submitted a photo of the River Stage in the Dennis Freeman Memorial River Park at Logansport. The photo shows the Sabine River swelled by all the recent rains which made the River Stage inaccessible.
According to a rain station in Joaquin (Joaquin W5RYM), the Texas side of the river had received 4.88 inches of total rainfall from the 1st of March until the photo was taken Saturday morning, March 14th.
According to the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS), the Sabine River at Logansport is at 28.91 feet as of today, March 16th, at 3:45pm. The flood stage for the area is 28 feet.
March 16, 2015 - The Woman's Reading Club met on March 5 in the home of Mrs. Carolyn Bounds. President Donna Holt presided with 18 members present. Following the business meeting, Carolyn reviewed Linda Lear's biography Beatrix Potter: A Life in Nature.
Best known as the author and illustrator of The Tale of Peter Rabbit and many other children's classics, Beatrix, was also an amateur scientist (mycologist and botanist), an artist who celebrated the natural world, a very successful business entrepreneur, and ultimately a farmer and Herdwick sheep breeder who used her literary royalties to acquire over 4,000 acres in the lovely Lake District of northern England.
Reared to believe that one should improve the condition of her fellow man and the natural world and committed to preservation of the land and its culture, Beatrix Potter upon her death in 1943 bequeathed her 4,000 acres, 19 cottages, and her Herdwick sheep herds to the British National Trust so that future generations could know the beauty and sanctity of the natural world that she was privileged to have experienced.
Brilliant, gifted, self-reliant, far-sighted and philanthropic, Beatrix Potter deserves to be recognized as one of the most accomplished women of her era and beyond.
Following her book review, Mrs. Bounds treated members to refreshments, including a "Peter Rabbit cake," the artist creation of Mrs. Mary Ellen Lowe. Everyone found Mrs. Lowe's rendering of Peter Rabbit in the midst of cabbage and carrot garden rows a delight to both the eye and the palate!
March 16, 2015 - Pineywoods Beekeepers Association members Mike and Linda Bordelon who own and operate Heavenly Honey Apiary on Toledo Bend Lake at Huxley, Texas, explained basic bee facts and bee-loving flowering plants and trees to the San Augustine Garden Club at their March 12 meeting.

March 13, 2015 - The Texas Bucket List will air a St. Patrick's Day special this weekend which will feature the historic Shelby County Courthouse.
Colleen Doggett, Chairperson of the Shelby County Historical Commission, was contacted by Leigh Porterfield with the Shelby County Chamber of Commerce saying The Texas Bucket List would be contacting her concerning the courthouse. Doggett said to her surprise, "[Shane McAuliffe] did indeed call me and make an appointment to meet me" and to tour the heart of Shelby County - its historic courthouse.
"I love our Courthouse and they were just blown away with the beauty of it. They loved the story which I hope airs on the TV about the judge's escape hatch" explained Doggett.
With McAuliffe she spoke about the stories told in articles and history books concerning the escape hatch under the judges bench but she preferred the version told by Joe Lewis Jones, long time caretaker and historian of the courthouse.
Doggett relayed his version saying, "The story Joe Lewis Jones told me when he and I were talking was that in that day, when the courthouse was built it was in 1885 and it was only 40 or 35 years after the close of the Regulator-Moderator war, and so there had been numerous incidents of people coming into court with their guns and people being shot coming out of a church meeting during that war." With the mind set of troubled times in people's memory, the escape hatch was designed to be a quick get-a-way for the judge.
Now why was the historic courthouse selected to be a part of The Texas Bucket List? According to The Texas Bucket List Facebook page, its because of the courthouse's Irish style. Their Facebook post posted Thursday, March 12th along with a photo of the courthouse was - This weekend on The Texas Bucket List St. Patrick's Day special, we head to Center, Texas to visit the Shelby County Courthouse. This amazing structure was built in 1885 by an Irishman from Dublin!
The architect, J. J. E. Gibson of Ireland, designed the courthouse which is now the only remaining Irish castle style courthouse in the United States.

March 8, 2015 - (More photos - Album1, Album2, Album3) The Shelby County Livestock Sale raised over $66,950 for FFA and 4-H exhibitors Saturday night, March 7, 2015 at the John D. Windham Civic Center. The show was held Friday night, March 6th at the Expo Center. More details of the sale including buyers will be updated Monday.
