July 8, 2015 - The DRT Travellin' Trunk made its way to the Summer reading program for Tweens at the Fannie Brown Booth Library in Center and gave a glimpse into every day life in early Texas.

Gail Sholar, Cynthia Webster and Maggie Casto of the William Carroll Crawford Chapter of the Daughters of the Republic of Texas and Gene Casto and Nolan Sholar of the Gateway to Texas Chapter of the Sons of the Republic of Texas stepped back into an earlier time with their audience. That time before there were Wal-marts and McDonalds, before there were schools and computer games, before electricity and telephones. They showed how clothing was made and food was obtained and prepared, what games children played, how music was made, how families made their life. A hard life. A good life. The life of our ancestors. Texans!!

July 9, 2015 - Maggie Casto, Gail Sholar and Cynthia Webster of the William Carroll Crawford Chapter of the Daughters of the Republic of Texas, presented a book, "Magnificent Sam" to Sandra Davis for the children's section of the Fannie Brown Booth Library in Center.

The book tells in words and pictures of the amazing adventures of Sam Houston. The inscription on General Sam Houston's Tomb reads: "A Brave Soldier, A Fearless Statesman. A Great Orator A Pure Patriot. A Faithful Friend, A Loyal Citizen. A Devoted Husband and Father. A Consistent Christian-An Honest Man."

This was Sam Houston, the first President of the Republic of Texas and Governor of the State of Texas from 1859 to 1861. Magnificent Sam!

June 4, 2015 - The City of Timpson and Timpson Area Chamber of Commerce held a ribbon cutting on Monday, July 1, 2015 for the newly installed lights of the city's MLK Park.

Paul Smith, Timpson Area Chamber of Commerce President, was the first to share his feelings about the newly installed lighting, "I'm really proud of the city putting an extra effort out to make sure we get lights in the park up here. It is a park that needs to be used by everybody and I think we've got a good group of youth that's going to make good use of it, so I'm excited. I'm excited about being able to come up here and watch them play ball and all," said Smith. "The Timpson [Area] Chamber of Commerce is really excited about the lights on the park and thanks the city for making sure that happened."

Mayor Debra Pate Smith said the project was a long time coming and enlightened everyone as to how the city acquired the lights for the park, "The lights actually were a reusable product, they were lights I think Mr. [Tommy] Sparks originally put up at the school years ago. When they put their new ones in Mr. [Mid] Johnson and I kind of had an agreement, they used Tommy to put some lights where they wanted that they took down and in turn we got lights for the park here."

According to Mayor Smith their are many nighttime uses already scheduled for the park including kickball team games, softball teams and Center baseball team practices. She also elaborated about future plans at the park.

"We'd like to get the backstop at the back border fixed so that two teams can practice at a time and possibly look at some fencing and things so they'll know when they hit it out of the park so to speak," said Smith.

The Smiths provided a personal pitching machine for youth at the event to practice with inaugurating the newly installed lights. Paul Smith thanked the Ministerial Alliance for providing food and refreshments for those present. Pastor Marvin Jackson with Clayton Temple blessed the food. Following refreshments a ribbon cutting was held and Mayor Smith switched the lights on for the park.

We're just really excited to be here and be able to, you know, have our kids in the shop and work and just help other people be happy," said Pinkston.

June 30, 2015 - First United Methodist Church of Center was the recipient of the Shelby Beautiful Clean Community Beautification Award on Tuesday, June 30, 2015. Jodi Fountain, representing the Shelby County Chamber of Commerce Beautiful Clean Committee, presented the award.

Receiving the award on behalf of the church was Karen Jones, Pastor, Kenneth Hardy and Nell Polley.

According to a press release issued by the Shelby County Chamber of Commerce, the Shelby Beautiful Clean Committee of the Shelby County Chamber of Commerce presented a Community Beautification Award to the First United Methodist Church (FUMC) for their many years of caring and beautifying the Methodist Church Cemetery. As one of the oldest cemeteries in Shelby County, it was established over 154 years ago.

The Methodist Church Cemetery has become a featured landmark in Center and is included in the Downtown Walking tour guide created by Steve and Lisa Thomas. The church established a memorial fund for contributions to be earmarked for cemetery landscape and maintenance. For many years, the work was guided and led by Nell Polley, and now in recent years, the mission is continued by Suzanne Ihlo, both of who are longtime church members.

The church welcomed Pastor Karen Jones in 2015 and FUMC Trustees Chairman is Kenneth Hardy. The church is recognized by the Shelby County Chamber of Commerce for the constant care and efforts for beautification to the community and the mindful preservation of history. The cemetery is fenced and has an irrigation system. Most recently, all the burial markers were cleaned and preserved to a pristine state. Routine trimming and plantings in the FUMC Cemetery create a beautiful garden landscape year round. The last burial of over 100 people in the cemetery was Pollie Holt in 1939.

The Shelby Beautiful Clean Committee is chaired by Jodi Fountain. Shelby Beautiful Clean is affiliated with Keep Texas Beautiful and Keep America Beautiful programs. The committee leads recycling efforts as well as recognizes beautification efforts in Shelby County.

The Shelby County Chamber of Commerce is organized to promote and advance economic enrichment and development, tourism and the social and civic interest of Shelby County and adjoining areas.
