2023 Shelby County Annual Pond Day

May 20, 2023 - “Good pond management is essential to having a pond that will provide recreation and fish for the pond owner,” stated Lane Dunn, Shelby County Texas A&M AgrilLIFE Extension Agent for agriculture. To help pond owners become better managers, A&M AgriLIFE Extension will sponsor a Farm Pond Management Seminar on May 30th, 2023 with registration starting at 5:30pm. The late afternoon program will focus on topics that include weed control utilizing tilapia and grass carp, water quality and fertilization to increase weed control, weed identification, weed control and proper timing of aquatic herbicides.

Garrett Stamport, Fisheries Program Specialist will be discussing Weed Control Utilizing Tilapia and Grass Carp as well as using Water Quality and Fertilization to Increase Weed Control.

Lane Dunn, CEA/AGNR will cover Weed Identification, Control and Proper Timing Using Aquatic Herbicides. This is an excellent time for individuals to bring pond water samples to test water quality. Weed samples may also be brought for identification and management options.

The seminar will be held at the Weldon Boles farm in Center. Take 96 South for 3 miles toward San Augustine, turn left on CR 1006 (Old City Lake Road). Turn at brown pipe fence on left. Please bring lawn chairs. No registration fee will be charged.

Those who attend will receive 2.0 CEU’s (1 IPM and 1 Gen.) towards the requirements for the private applicators license. Please R.S.V.P. by May 22, 2023, by contacting the Shelby County Extension office at (936) 598-7744 for meal purposes. The meal is sponsored by McAdams Propane.
